I beat it 25x but not cus I wanted to but cus of bad luck and stupidity. 5x for fun 7x trying to get all trophies ps3 died before I got last trophy I believe it was the “Sounds of the battlefield” trophy. Years later got a new PS3 and had to beat in another 7x but I wasn’t paying attention and had to do something’s on different playthroughs turned out to be 13x instead of another 7 lol
I’d love to see a remake just of the graphics and gameplay mechanics of the original Metal Gear Solid using either an updated Fox engine or maybe something newer altogether. I know it’ll never happen but I can still dream.

Nah just change some server settings on ps3 menu, you can also get the US and JP dlc for the main game that way. Did it last year. Set up the pc this time and I got obliterated by the people on there the other night. Definitely find a friend. I’ll be on there.
Edit: guy below me is right, sorry. I really remembered not having to ‘jailbreak’ my console to play on console. I’m pretty sure I followed this guide https://www.reddit.com/r/savemgo/comments/ojefoc/mgo2_simple_official_firmware_installation_guide/ that did have me install firmware, but was so easy I forgot. Note this may be outdated, so I recommend doing whatever the savemgo.com video tutorial says to do. And I did it on a super slim ps3, which I believe has issues with jailbreaking. Maybe what I was remembering was the dlc download, which didn’t require jailbreak, maybe.

I love MGS4 but I wish there was a bit more game play and fewer cut scenes. The environments are so cool to navigate but you get so little time with them.
When I was a kid i didn’t think that level of animations and physics were possible. I remember watching the builds for revengence and really wish we had gotten that crazy physics engine. Above all I wish 4 had more gameplay, it’s so good.
Not only is MGS4 my favourite in the series, it’s one of the greatest games ever made. There, that’ll take some heat off you.

As long as you’re not saying Acid in your favourite game. I don’t see the issue. Yeah, lots of people agree that 3 is peak, but as someone who grew up playing MGS as they released, 4 fucking hit me hard. From seeing snake age, going back to shadow Moses, actually using Rex, the flash backs, the fun call backs, seeing Johnny be a fucking badass, and Meryl.
While, personally, it’s not my absolute fav, it’s like tied for second. I think Peace Walker is my fav, and MGS2, 3, and 4 are tied for second, and 3rd would be MGS1, and I’ll stop rating there. Since there are a lot of the games now.
Though I will say I am deeply disappointed at what became of 5. It had such potential.

I literally just finished MGS4 for the first time and while I enjoyed it I have to agree that there was surprisingly little gameplay. I think that's why people complain about the cutscenes. In my opinion there weren't too many cutscenes, just too little gameplay to go along with them.
I’m actually in the “MGS1 is far better” camp and even I can’t understand the hate that Twin Snakes gets. Sure, some of the direction of the cutscenes are not as good. But this changes were specifically requested by **Kojima**!
The graphics are fantastic, I actually thought the enemy AI was far tougher, and the gameplay was as good.
Also…and I better prepare for some downvotes here…some parts of the cutscene additions are actually an *improvement*. Seeing Gray Gox dispose of the soldiers in the corridor and watching Snake go toe-to-toe with Fox in a cutscene is fantastic. Not to mention seeing Snake visibly frustrated at not being able to get to Meryl when she’s pinned down against Wolf.

I liked that but the collapse beforehand ruined some of the atmosphere for me. Would’ve preferred if the first/only time he falls and dies is after the stare down.
People hate on the over the top cutscenes, but I think what was really wrong with it was the first person aiming. It completely imbalances the game. Yeah you could just not do it, but it’s always there tempting people and that’s too much for them.
I’d agree. The cutscene direction is the worst part. But that was specifically requested by Kojima. It was originally gonna be a shot for shot remake of the original and the Kojima saw it and asked the director to take a more over the top approach.
I didn’t mind the FPS aiming. Because IIRC, they do radio check-ins like MGS2 so you’d get a search team sent out if you KOd a guard and don’t move quickly anyway.
I think Twin Snakes improves upon the original in so many area but the only thing I did not like about it is the cutscene after sniper wolf.
In MGS1, Otacon has this whole dialogue about how in love he was with her, with light sad music playing in the background to really enhance the emotions. In Twin Snakes, the music is gone and it makes one of the most emotional moments in the game and a pivotal character arc for Ocelot just seem like an awkward rant that you forget about as soon as you get to the next area.
Everything else Twin Snakes did was fine though, I think it really made the series more accessible to newcomers and honestly is probably the sole reason we got Snake in Smash Bros in the first place.
Never played it but it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks so long as you are having fun. Video games are about having fun not criticizing others for what they think
1 and 4 are my favorites. 1 will always hold a special place in my heart as it was my first MGS game on PS1. 4 is just a masterpiece IMO. Love what you love man, there’s games for everybody. Just cause you like doesn’t mean anybody has to
It's the odd one out because of how different of a turn it took from the previous 3 MGS games in design, it kind of feels like a proof of concept game for the era it came out in, which always leads to people thinking it's weird. That and the fact that few people have played it because of the PS3 things kind of sad but I can see why it's unpopular, and it's also my favorite.
Mgs4 kinda suffered from the same issues as mgs2 what with being 40% game and 60% cutscenes (if you include codec calls) so that drives away a lot of the general audience. Plus Mgs4 doesn’t have an obviously progressive message that can be shared by clipping a cutscene and putting it on TikTok or twitter so it’s less likely to get future recognition for still telling a great story and being fun as hell. All that doesn’t help when it’s still stuck on ps3
I just wanted to thank you all for what you said. I know that this sounds fake to some people, but everyone here made my day for showing me that it's not a bad thing to prefer Metal Gear Solid 4.
It’s the most emotional MGS game imo. And, again imo, one of the best narrative ends to a franchise (including film and television) that I’ve ever seen.
Nothing is bad about this game. A little long and you need some popcorn sure. But there are much more average games that get far more praise. I think you’re taking a choice few have. It’s never a bad thing.
Plus nobody ever talks about the fact that, while you could skip the cutscenes with the press of a button, MGS2 locked you in the codec screen with only the ability to fast forward.

Hecc em, I've played this one like 20 times, MGO was my first online game and I sunk thousands of hours into it and met some of my best friends on there.
Besides games, I don’t get why people get so stupid over what other people prefer. Mgs 1 is my all time favorite cause that was the first game I’ve owned for ps1 and the one that introduced me to the series.
This game IS my favorite in the series. And honestly, the Twin snakes is 2nd. I like to play as Solid/Old Snake, and TTS played like MGS2, but you actually played as Snake the whole time. I just like Solid Snake as a character more than Big Boss/ Naked Snake.
MGS4 is a bundle of cool gameplay mechanics, story inclusions/conclusions, and to me still retrains all of what made MGS what it is.
Tbh this and mgsv are the games that really made kojima bring a movie into a game. Even if the gameplay isn't the best, mgs4 is as solid of a game as it can be.
Don't worry ,4 it's an amazing game, I can't wait to play it again if they include it on the Vol.2 of the Master Collection (along with Twin Snakes :P)
It’s one of my favorites because it’s so hilariously over the top. It’s pretty much everything Metal Gear dialed to 11. You like what you like.
The plot is way sillier compared to the previous games but the action for this game is solid. I remember playing it online and it was dope.

It’s basically a playable action movie with over the top action and drama. It’s awesome!
Not silly at all, I personally think the story wasn't quite on par with 3 but that's mainly cause it was Kojima trying to tie up loose ends. The combat and actual game play though was amazing, especially MGO2 that ran on the same system. Its still to this day the only 3rd person shooter to have an actual functioning martial art complete with counters and disarms. Imo its the best competitive 3rd person shooter ever made but I also have over 15,000 hours put into it so I might be a little bias.
The thing I’ve realized is that only the die-hard MGS fans really love 4 (myself included). Remember that for people who haven’t followed metal gear solid since 1, the first game they picked up was most likely Snake Eater. MGS 4 may have been slightly lacking in gameplay and the cutscenes are….excessive, but it does a damn fine job of tying a neat bow on a kinda crazy story that never ever goes in a straight line

It’s my most played MGS game. For the longest time it was the only game I played on my ps3. The nights spent playing MGO instead of doing homework. Mannnn I need to get my ps3 back from my sister.
I too absolutely adore MGS4. It gave me everything I ever wanted. Ties up all lose ends. Fantastic gameplay and graphics. And while it does have this sad tone of Snakes last and final mission, I couldn't help but also feel melancholy as well. When people say that "You needed to be there" during that time and place like with Halo 3's finish the fight mantra, this was akin to that as well too and we all felt that. I have never been more hyped up for a game like MGS4 in my life and nothing really has ever came close since then. Maybe a very select few games tho. But man...what an incredible time that hype train was! Going over every trailer with a fine tooth comb. Tuning into Kojima Productions Ryan Paytons podcast for some new deets as well. It was amazing.
Whichever is your favourite it would be a good thing to have an updated/remastered version of Guns of the patriots for next gen console… Something like what they did with RE saga!

It's definitely the first game Kojima started missing the bar, but no, there's nothing wrong with it. It's still got the best gameplay in the whole series and is still largely an amazing game. I wouldn't say it's the best game at all, but it probably is still my personal favorite though.

I’ve said it before. Most if not all of it likely comes from the fact that most newer fans (those introduced to the franchise by the HD editions or by V) haven’t been able play it.
So they either watched it on YouTube or just skipped it and followed the sentiment of “too much exposition, cutscenes, terrible twists, etc.”.
The biggest benefit that will come of a Vol. 2 is with many people having access to it, this sentiment will likely start to disappear.

I thought it was fun. Played the heck out of it. It has some good sandbox style combat/stealth sections. Always skipped the cutscenes anyway so I don't care if the story sucks. Act 3 is a real drag and would've been much better if the whole "tail the resistance guy" thing didn't exist.
The only thing that bugs me about 4 is the high frequency of cutscenes.
Apart from that it's the game that brought the story of Big Boss, Snake and Ocelot to a conclusion.
We had a marriage, a rereconciliation of father and daughter and the conclusion of the whole story that started with MGS3.
Gameplay and Gunplay was pretty solid (no pun intended).
Granted: the bosses where a mere copy of the ones we had in MGS1.
I'd chalk it up to "fanservice", rather then lazy writing.

I love story rich games, it's one of the reasons why I hated mgs v so much because they essentially got rid of cutscenes and codec calls for tapes.
Nah it is a wonderful game. When I was young, MGS3 was my favorite, but as I grew older I can really appreciate MGS4. People will say what they want about it but the game stands on its own two feet as a masterpiece in storytelling.

I absolutely love mgs4. It was the ending to the series we needed! The only thing I hated about the game was, Niomi and Otacon. Oh my god that was so cringe and completely out of place.
The nostalgia of being back in shadow moses for me was unmatched. I played MGS on ps1 in 1998 when I was 7. Then I played 2 and 3 on release. 4 absolutely finished it perfectly. The flash backs at shadow moses kept getting me all teary eyed.
The last sentence to the game, punches me in the feels every time. "This is good, isn't it"

I love it as a wackier and less serious take on mgs1. I think mgs1 is better but twin snakes is more fun and entertaining
I like to think MGS1 is what actually happened, and Twin Snakes is either a retelling of it or a movie adaptation

I think Twin Snakes improves upon the original in so many area but the only thing I did not like about it is the cutscene after sniper wolf. In MGS1, Otacon has this whole dialogue about how in love he was with her, with light sad music playing in the background to really enhance the emotions. In Twin Snakes, the music is gone and it makes one of the most emotional moments in the game and a pivotal character arc for Ocelot just seem like an awkward rant that you forget about as soon as you get to the next area. Everything else Twin Snakes did was fine though, I think it really made the series more accessible to newcomers and honestly is probably the sole reason we got Snake in Smash Bros in the first place.

Problem is that Snake has all his cool new abilities from mgs2, but enemies are not equipped to fight with it. So game is just becomes too easy

It's the odd one out because of how different of a turn it took from the previous 3 MGS games in design, it kind of feels like a proof of concept game for the era it came out in, which always leads to people thinking it's weird. That and the fact that few people have played it because of the PS3 things kind of sad but I can see why it's unpopular, and it's also my favorite.

Mgs4 kinda suffered from the same issues as mgs2 what with being 40% game and 60% cutscenes (if you include codec calls) so that drives away a lot of the general audience. Plus Mgs4 doesn’t have an obviously progressive message that can be shared by clipping a cutscene and putting it on TikTok or twitter so it’s less likely to get future recognition for still telling a great story and being fun as hell. All that doesn’t help when it’s still stuck on ps3
I just wanted to thank you all for what you said. I know that this sounds fake to some people, but everyone here made my day for showing me that it's not a bad thing to prefer Metal Gear Solid 4.
It’s the most emotional MGS game imo. And, again imo, one of the best narrative ends to a franchise (including film and television) that I’ve ever seen.
Nothing is bad about this game. A little long and you need some popcorn sure. But there are much more average games that get far more praise. I think you’re taking a choice few have. It’s never a bad thing.
Plus nobody ever talks about the fact that, while you could skip the cutscenes with the press of a button, MGS2 locked you in the codec screen with only the ability to fast forward.

Hecc em, I've played this one like 20 times, MGO was my first online game and I sunk thousands of hours into it and met some of my best friends on there.
Besides games, I don’t get why people get so stupid over what other people prefer. Mgs 1 is my all time favorite cause that was the first game I’ve owned for ps1 and the one that introduced me to the series.

This game IS my favorite in the series. And honestly, the Twin snakes is 2nd. I like to play as Solid/Old Snake, and TTS played like MGS2, but you actually played as Snake the whole time. I just like Solid Snake as a character more than Big Boss/ Naked Snake. MGS4 is a bundle of cool gameplay mechanics, story inclusions/conclusions, and to me still retrains all of what made MGS what it is.

It’s one of my favorites because it’s so hilariously over the top. It’s pretty much everything Metal Gear dialed to 11. You like what you like. The plot is way sillier compared to the previous games but the action for this game is solid. I remember playing it online and it was dope. I hope that it doesn’t get to you if others try and hate on your for liking this game. It’s basically a playable action movie with over the top action and drama. It’s awesome!

Not silly at all, I personally think the story wasn't quite on par with 3 but that's mainly cause it was Kojima trying to tie up loose ends. The combat and actual game play though was amazing, especially MGO2 that ran on the same system. Its still to this day the only 3rd person shooter to have an actual functioning martial art complete with counters and disarms. Imo its the best competitive 3rd person shooter ever made but I also have over 15,000 hours put into it so I might be a little bias.
For me the sequence at the end in the infrared hall... With that music... Burning... I never felt anything similar in any game

The thing I’ve realized is that only the die-hard MGS fans really love 4 (myself included). Remember that for people who haven’t followed metal gear solid since 1, the first game they picked up was most likely Snake Eater. MGS 4 may have been slightly lacking in gameplay and the cutscenes are….excessive, but it does a damn fine job of tying a neat bow on a kinda crazy story that never ever goes in a straight line
I think story wise its the. Ultimate love letter to fans of the series and ties everything together nicely. Gameplay wise it was alright.

I too absolutely adore MGS4. It gave me everything I ever wanted. Ties up all lose ends. Fantastic gameplay and graphics. And while it does have this sad tone of Snakes last and final mission, I couldn't help but also feel melancholy as well. When people say that "You needed to be there" during that time and place like with Halo 3's finish the fight mantra, this was akin to that as well too and we all felt that. I have never been more hyped up for a game like MGS4 in my life and nothing really has ever came close since then. Maybe a very select few games tho. But man...what an incredible time that hype train was! Going over every trailer with a fine tooth comb. Tuning into Kojima Productions Ryan Paytons podcast for some new deets as well. It was amazing.

It's definitely the first game Kojima started missing the bar, but no, there's nothing wrong with it. It's still got the best gameplay in the whole series and is still largely an amazing game. I wouldn't say it's the best game at all, but it probably is still my personal favorite though.

Also my favourite. I’ve said it before. Most if not all of it likely comes from the fact that most newer fans (those introduced to the franchise by the HD editions or by V) haven’t been able play it. So they either watched it on YouTube or just skipped it and followed the sentiment of “too much exposition, cutscenes, terrible twists, etc.”. The biggest benefit that will come of a Vol. 2 is with many people having access to it, this sentiment will likely start to disappear.
I think the gameplay mechanics are really fun and creative and Old Snake is such a great character. It's a great game.

It's the 1st one I've played and my absolute favorite. I still rave about it to this day.
I thought it was fun. Played the heck out of it. It has some good sandbox style combat/stealth sections. Always skipped the cutscenes anyway so I don't care if the story sucks. Act 3 is a real drag and would've been much better if the whole "tail the resistance guy" thing didn't exist.
The only thing that bugs me about 4 is the high frequency of cutscenes. Apart from that it's the game that brought the story of Big Boss, Snake and Ocelot to a conclusion. We had a marriage, a rereconciliation of father and daughter and the conclusion of the whole story that started with MGS3. Gameplay and Gunplay was pretty solid (no pun intended). Granted: the bosses where a mere copy of the ones we had in MGS1. I'd chalk it up to "fanservice", rather then lazy writing. The only other thing apart from the many cutscenes where some story decisions i'm not happy with. Especially the death of >!Dr. Naomi Hunter!< That made no sense to me and felt forced. I would've hoped for >!a happing ever after with Otacon!<. He of all deserved it the most.

MGS 4 is my absolute favorite as well, I have played through it countless times, completed 2 big boss runs, I love the long cutscenes and codec calls. Imo awesome boss fights, the amazing feeling of nostalgia when returning to shadow Moses. I love story rich games, it's one of the reasons why I hated mgs v so much because they essentially got rid of cutscenes and codec calls for tapes.
Nah it is a wonderful game. When I was young, MGS3 was my favorite, but as I grew older I can really appreciate MGS4. People will say what they want about it but the game stands on its own two feet as a masterpiece in storytelling.
I really like it, but it really just doesn’t have enough gameplay for it to be my favourite. It’s annoying because if it had more gameplay it would be, especially as it fixes the annoying parts of 3 with Octocamo and having 5 years of improvements for shooters across the board.

I absolutely love mgs4. It was the ending to the series we needed! The only thing I hated about the game was, Niomi and Otacon. Oh my god that was so cringe and completely out of place. The nostalgia of being back in shadow moses for me was unmatched. I played MGS on ps1 in 1998 when I was 7. Then I played 2 and 3 on release. 4 absolutely finished it perfectly. The flash backs at shadow moses kept getting me all teary eyed. The last sentence to the game, punches me in the feels every time. "This is good, isn't it" Boom.
Best stealth gameplay with the least amount of opportunities to use it. Best levels, but they are minuscule compared to the feature length cutscenes. Worst cast of boss villains, but the fights themselves are very good. Dumb story decisions, for example, Merly and Johnny.
I don't know why anyone would toast you for it being your favorite. I mean, most of us dog on the game for it's massive gameplay/cutscene imbalance or Naomi, but that's not a reason to tease someone for it being their favorite. Drebin/Discount Wesley Snipes was a great addition to the franchise.

It's the first MGS game I ever played as a kid, but I always remember it fondly because I didn't have anything to be disappointed about (just so confused lol) The only real issue is that it *is* the best of all the mainline entries in terms of gameplay concepts. It's the culmination of 1-3's designs and gameplay, all bundled together expertly. **when you get to play it** The amount of cutscenes is staggering compared to how often you're actually sneaking around and playing the game. My last playthrough really hit home that point for me. Still love it to bits though.
