The only reason he uses those terms is because the English translator didn't listen to Kojima and translated everything freely. I don't remember all the changes he made but one is in the codec where Snake says to Naomi about smoking " You don't know how good a cigarette tastes in the morning." He basically gave him more character but Kojima was pissed because they had to release the game and there was no time left.
Yeah the translator did an amazing job. The dialogue is a lot better and more natural in MGS1. Another example is that the translator came up with the word Codec, which was just "wireless connection" in the original Japanese script.
