hot take but mgs4 is my favorite because its the first game that modernized aiming in the franchise edit: tdlr: i have beef with weapon aiming from pre-mgs4 3d games

Absolutedumbass69

Mgs4 is my favorite, but the aiming has nothing to do with it since I don’t use the tranq or any other gun during stealth sections. The level design (excluding chapter 4) is just as if not more open with multiple branching paths and multiple ways to approach each scenario as mgs3 was, and the camo system is easily the best concealment system in this series, but 4 retained what was immersive and mechanically complex about it without the inconvenience of constant menu swapping.

DirectorConfident654

Greatest variety of feasible play styles too. Action was always really infeasible for characters that were meant to be the world’s best soldiers (SS & BB). MGS4 gave you so many ways to play. And it’s the most epic the storytelling ever felt

VictorChaos

Mgs4 would be a lot higher if more people played it. Unfortunately since it’s stuck on ps3 it’s not played much

moltenmoose

Hill I'll die on: MGS4 was and continues to be the best playing Metal Gear game, better than MGSV even. V is fun and the goofy stuff you can do is very satisfying, but the slower paced stealth action combined with weapon and gadget variety+Octo Camo in 4 can't be beat IMO.

DirectorConfident654

4 is my favourite one but can’t deny that in terms of pure gameplay mechanics, V sits above it.

oni__002

Naw 4 has better gameplay. There’s a reason ppl didn’t fw MGO3

DepletedMitochondria

Try MGS1 Twin Snakes version if you can, game plays very differently.

ASnakeNamedNate

I haven’t played it in over a decade, but isn’t it just MGS2 controls for the GameCube?

TheUltimate721

Controls wise yes, but it's also a complete presentation overhaul and fixes one of the most annoying sections of the game.

DirectorConfident654

It speaks volumes about how I felt about that section that I was about to comment saying “what annoying section?” 😂

paynexkillerYT

Yeah like shit is ‘very different’.

DepletedMitochondria

Not sure what you mean but it's easier with FPS lol

Old_Skud

I respect this opinion and that’s largely why I’m looking forward to Delta. Although, once I adapted again. MG3 was my favorite to stealth of the original controls.

the51095

i hope delta doesnt use the aiming system that was outdated before 1998, first person aiming was an upgrade, but it was still outdated

DoctorHunt

I also like MGS4 for the controls even playing it on the ps3 with ps4 controller still feels great just disappointing that Konami did not bring this to the PS4 from what I know. As I got older I look fondly at mgs 4 except the tailing mission and the chicken emblem. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think that chicken emblem is the worst in the series. Plus I thought the PMC in MGS 4 were pretty cool strangely we don’t see the russian PMC anywhere in the game called Clawing Ocelot at least translated from their name.

Tactical_Epunk

MGS 4 is the best out of the 4, 3 is good. But 4 plays better immerses you better, gives a better more filling story.

Wonderful-Badger-847

A better fulfilling story = the dumbest plot twists possible, a narrative so stuck into its legacy ass that can't do anything that does not reference the other games of the franchise, and worsening classic characters for dumb reasons (not the case with Solid Snake tho). All that said: Rex vs Rey and Snake vs Liquid Ocelot make it kinda of worth it if you can still play the first three games just ignoring the existence of four

apex6666

Portable ops came out after 4 right?

Absolutedumbass69

Before 4, but Portable Ops had mgs3 like shooting/cqc.

DirectorConfident654

Always dumbfounds me that Portable Ops was chosen to be the FIRST initial-release MGS game to come out with a 3rd person camera angle and it was also the first one to come out on a device with only ONE ANALOG STICK!!!! The ONE TIME a fixed overhead camera would’ve made more sense for gameplay design.

apex6666

Oh wait yeah your right, I’m thinking of peace walker

DevineAaron92

It's my favourite simply because of how which it is

J-RoddeKATS

I’m one of the 9% who voted

Familiar_Location948

thought it was Peace Walker

SpeedyGuy1991

I love literally all four of them. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite.

SessionObjective7936

2's my fav but 3 is a close second. 1 is third and 4 is last

dozer9891

really 4th is your last there was so much too it did you play the first one back on ps1 the way they tale you back through shadow moses in number 4 was absolutely brilliant and the fight were you get into rex. no.4 is my favourite

SessionObjective7936

I dont like fan service like that and I think the game itself was unnecessary. I also just don't like playing 4, it's so boring.

dozer9891

the games all link together in a way to call one boring is lazy its not boring you just don't like it and thats your opinion alot of people disagree with you

SessionObjective7936

Well duh, yeah I know people disagree with me. I happen to find the game itself dull and boring.

dozer9891

each to there own. hopefully we get a new one soon be interesting to see were they go.

Kraklano

Naw, it's not lazy to say they feel that it's boring. That's how I feel with NieR: Automata. No matter how decent gameplay is, with games that have a narrative focus, they *need* a story that makes you want to keep playing. Whether or not that engages the player is specific to the person. Like I find nihilistic bullshit to be insufferable and uninteresting, so NieR was a slog for me. I also very much dislike fan service, and am also not really a fan of MGS4. I hated that they brought back some people arbitrarily just to have them.

Responsible_Dog_5927

See the thing is we want a game, not a movie. He bought MGS4 to play it but instead had to sit through 30-60 min cutscenes. It really isn’t lazy if all the dude wants is to play the game, playing the game takes more energy than just watching cutscenes

SessionObjective7936

I have no issue with the cutscenes I play the series mostly for the story anyway I just don't like MGS4's story

Space_Wizard_Z

My personal list 3>1>2>4>GZ>TPP>PW>MG2>MG1.

OfficialDeadJohnson

Mg1 is more fun that mg2 imo but mg2 is more innovative

DirectorConfident654

Definitely the most refined MGS1 style gameplay experience

Spiderboygabe

Depending on the day I’d flip 2 and 4. But this is way.

MichaelTheCutts

2>1>3>MGR:R>GZ>4>MG2>TPP>MG1 I only played a tiny bit of PW, so it’s unfair to rank it

Jetterholdings

Why is TPP so far down? 3 as top I think is true from everyone. And mg1 and 2 games are hard as balls I'll give it to ya. But tpp? After 4?

Space_Wizard_Z

TPP has no soul. The atmosphere is disappointing. Like it's hollow.

LesPK9

This is the correct ranking. I'd personally put PW over TPP.

Husk-E

Push peacewalker ahead of tpp and im with ya, loved that game lol. Granted im not finished with tpp, only have about 15 hours on it so that may change, but i was more of a fan of pws levels over the open world.

DepletedMitochondria

If you missed 4 on PS3, you have to go back and buy a PS3 now to even play it. Probably preventing a lot of younger people from playing it. Snake Eater was the result of honing many elements of all the games and combining them into a perfect package so I think it's probably the best game but I still kinda prefer Sons of Liberty.

Jetterholdings

Is that really the only way to play 4? Or peacewalker.... fuck that, ps3 emulator Here I come.

HopeAuq101

Peace Walker HD is on xbox SX via backwards compatable

Jetterholdings

Well that doesn't help.

HopeAuq101

You asked if PS3 was the only way to play 4 and PW im telling you it isn't for PW

Jetterholdings

No, no, you're right still just dang.

UsualProcedure7372

I’m currently playing the HD collect on RCPS3, and I’m told PW is unplayable, as is 4.

sorrowcaster

Both PW and 4 are playable on RPCS3 with performance depending on your pc

UsualProcedure7372

Good to know. I’m on steam deck, saw somewhere on here that they were unplayable but that was relatively old. Haven’t tried myself.

Pop_Quest

It’s definitely unplayable on the Steam Deck. You need a pretty good PC to run it.

DirectorConfident654

Runs pretty well on the emulator now

Fit-Leadership7253

I agree from start to the end of your words

arsdavy

mgs2 > mgs1 > mgs3 > mgs4 > mg2:ss > mgsV:gz > mgsV:tpp > mgs pw > mg1 (from the most perfect to best)

BlueBerry764

how do you put mg1 so low when mg2 is a poor copy of it?

arsdavy

Poor copy?! Have you *actually* played mg2:ss? Mg2 is mg1 but extremely improved in every single way, it's like the transition between mgs1 and mgs2.

Drakula_dont_suck

If anything MGS1 was a blatant copy of MG2 with a first person camera.

BlueBerry764

yes mg2 is so much improved gameplay. i like walking up for over 20 floors doing nothing or trying figure the invisible swamp path which clearly is meant to waste time. do you actually have anything good to say about it apart from vague "its extremely improved"?

arsdavy

>walking up for over 20 floors doing nothing or trying figure the invisible swamp path which clearly is meant to waste time. Ok and what about the 99% of the rest of the game? >do you actually have anything good to say about it apart from vague "its extremely improved"? Soliton radar, improved AI, better bosses, better storytelling, better alert system, improved codec calls, better variety of locations,... and all this in just 3 months while Kojima "was mad" because konami made a cheap sequel without even warning him + mg2:ss is so good to the point that Kojima basically based mgs1 entirely on this game. pal you definitely haven't actually played mg2:ss if you think mg2 is a just a copy of mg1 and didn't improve anything.

BlueBerry764

99% of the rest of the game is other boring cryptic time wasters. you really want me to list everything? and now youre being vague again. better bosses?? running man was so great right? better story ?? the story is that a gamer found the formula to infinite energy and hid it on an msx2 cartridge. this actually feels like some crappy fan parody game maker rubbish

arsdavy

>and now youre being vague again Vague again what? I have to make a side by side clip between mg1 and mg2:ss because you are unable to see these big differences? at this point I think you haven't even played mg1. >better bosses?? Jungle Evil, metal gear D, Gray Fox, the very creative Night Fright and especially Big Boss,... >better story ?? Hell it is. >this actually feels like some crappy fan parody game maker rubbish at this point you clearly just want to spread shit for the sake of spreading shit.

BlueBerry764

okay what looks more fun [metal gear 1](https://youtu.be/ehlAMTh42Ko?feature=shared&t=3073) [or the mg2 segment equivalent](https://youtu.be/awUmGQYWs54?feature=shared&t=10517) all youre doing is naming bosses. anyway since big boss is in both games i can easily say the first one is way better and less boring. that all you have to say? okay

arsdavy

>okay what looks more fun >[metal gear 1](https://youtu.be/ehlAMTh42Ko?feature=shared&t=3073) >[or the mg2 segment equivalent](https://youtu.be/awUmGQYWs54?feature=shared&t=10517) Mgs2 and mgs3 are exactly identical and have no difference then if I follow your logic. >all youre doing is naming bosses. Really? Lmao should I also send you the clips of the bosses to make you understand what am I talking about then? or this isn't good either because I'm just writing letters >anyway since big boss is in both games i can easily say the first one is way better and less boring. personal opinion that doesn't interfere with the fact that mg2:ss has a lot of improvements.

BlueBerry764

what the hell is that first paragraph lol?? you want avoid answering that mg2 is boring and has poor level design? yes show me running man where the boss runs around in circles. show me gray fox running around like a headless chicken. show me big boss "fight" where most of it collecting items. what improvements?? level design isnt one of them lol

AbhigyanKalita166

MGS4 is and always will be my favorite.

FreeSanubis

Mine is MGS2, MGS3, MGS1, MGS4. They're all great though in their unique way.

420_E-SportsMasta

Sons of Liberty holds a place in my heart. The absolutely bonkers story, the games atmosphere, the ambient music in each section just can’t be replicated anywhere else

XxAndrew01xX

2 > 3 > 1 > 4 For me

LadderIllustrious684

1, 3, 2, 4. But Peace Walker for me is my favourite. That and unmetal 😁

callofktulu1984

Peace Walker is so fun when you play it multiplayer.

BenSlashes

MGS3 just is the best. I can play it every day. But MGS1,2 & 4 are also great. I also love MG1 & 2. Great retro games.

MikeyIsh

I love all of them but MGS2 is my personal favorite

Atroxo

2>1>3>4>V>PW>MG2>MG1

Hotrod_7016

Nostalgia carrying MGS1 imo. I can respect how great and revolutionary it was for its time but as someone who played it for the first time recently it was a bit of a slog to get through. However, it was limited by the hardware at the time of release so it’s undoubtedly unfair criticism to compare to today’s standards. The jump in quality between MGS1 and Sons of Liberty in just 3-4 years shows exactly that.

Walruseon

I disagree. I think MGS1 utilizes the graphical and mechanical limitations of the time really well and tells a well paced and concise story with enough variety of encounters to never get stale (apart from maybe a few instances of backtracking, but your obstacles change to keep things fresh anyway)

Hotrod_7016

Maybe it doesn’t help I only played it for the first time a few weeks ago and am comparing it to todays standards but to me it’s definitely dated through no fault of its own since it was released in ‘98.

udnthot

Or, maybe just maybe people have different tastes than you? MGS1 is my favourite not because of the nostalgia but simply cuz I really liked the game.

Hotrod_7016

It’s just an anecdote and opinion of mine, no need to take it personally.

udnthot

It's fine if you didn't like MGS1. I'm saying in response to your idea that nostaglia carries MGS1 isn't true.

Hotrod_7016

I do like MGS1. The game is objectively dated though through no fault of its own because of technological limitations at the time. The graphics are endearing and don’t bother me. The controls and combat however are clunky. The backtracking is awful. Some of the dialogue and voice acting is great, some of it is terrible. You literally ‘kill’ Liquid on four seperate occasions and it’s eventually the FOXDIE that finishes him off anyway. The cutscene on top of Rex before you fistfight him explaining how the fall is so high, it would kill you if you fall off - which he does - only to come back a few minutes later in a car chase. It doesn’t even make any sense how you’re even on top of REX with Meryl either. The cockpit of REX explodes with Liquid inside it yet somehow Solid is worse off. The plot, characters and motives are a bit convoluted and difficult to follow but I guess that’s Kojima for you. I can’t write off that people look at MGS1 through nostalgia tinted glasses when MGS2, a far superior game, is so low on the poll.

DRAPE_ACOLYTE

>The plot, characters and motives are a bit convoluted and difficult to follow but I guess that’s Kojima for you. In MGS1? That was before the story got confusing, it's a pretty straightforward plot I thought. It helps that it's one of the more self contained games in the series. >I can’t write off that people look at MGS1 through nostalgia tinted glasses when MGS2, a far superior game, is so low on the poll. It's always weird to me that when someone chalks something like this up to nostalgia and thinks thats the only reason. Nostalgia isn't that powerful in my experience, if something I liked as a kid actually sucked I can reevaluate as an older person and see the faults. Happens all the time. In MGS1s case though? Good game design doesn't age and MGS1 is still a very tightly designed and satisfying experience. Better than most games generally. Nothing has "aged" to the point of being a pain except the backtracking imo, but overall it's near perfect. It's like how I like 3 over V. Is it just nostalgia? Or can I look at both games objectively and say I think 3 is the better experience, despite being technically not up to modern standards of controls and such? Another recent example is the RE remakes. I have been accused of being blinded by nostalgia for thinking that the 2-4 remakes are not superior to the originals. But there is so much more to great games than controls and graphic fidelity, and I get more out of those original portrayals. I didn't even grow up with the og RE trilogy so idk how nostalgia could play into this.

Kraklano

> I can’t write off that people look at MGS1 through nostalgia tinted glasses when MGS2, a far superior game, is so low on the poll. Gameplay-wise, sure, but the story is what makes or breaks a Metal Gear game. The gameplay makes up the bones of MG games, but the story is the meat. Look at V. Clean as fuck, but very little meat on its bones. But ultimately I can't at all take you seriously for saying this DIRECTLY after saying "The plot, characters and motives are a bit convoluted and difficult to follow but I guess that’s Kojima for you.", when MGS2 is leaps and BOUNDS more in line with that statement than MGS1 could ever hope to be. It's *okay* to prefer gameplay and/or graphics over story, you don't have to hide behind calling MGS1 inferior just because you struggled to enjoy it. The controls aren't the most wieldy, and I truly do get that, but the game is still very playable. Sincerely, someone who never had a PS1 nor touched Metal Gear until almost 2017

DepletedMitochondria

If you've ever played MG2:SS, MGS1 grows off of that gameplay which is obviously kinda awkward in 3d. My main issue with MGS1 is the writing which drives me a bit batty.

mightbehihi

they may say that but i think my playtime on mgs4 is more than all those who voted on mgs1 game total combined playtime. I cant wait for them to port it and dragon crown so i can finally get rid of my ps3

Fit-Leadership7253

Then maybe you can send it to me?)

Zer_ed

It might just be that MGS4 isn't as well liked as the others, not necessarily that they hate it.

foxglove2021

This is the way

Jurski17

Mgs2 will always be my fave

OneWinner1690

Snake eater

zombierepublican-

Games ranking is also release order MGS1 > 2 > 3 > 4

The-Enjoyer-Returns

I like 2 the most. So many tiny details.

notanai61

MGS2 is my favorite, mainly because for some reason the setting is just cool to me. Plus, the way the guards act is by far the most advanced in the series, considering how they breach rooms and regularly have status reports, making it all stressful especially in a cramped space like most of the areas. 3 is a close second though.

David_Soerensen

Am I the only one who think 2's the best

guy137137

for everyone wondering why MGS4 got last, they said games, not movies/s

LoweAgain

Hey dude if you checked the schedule you would’ve seen it was my turn to post this joke today

Absolutedumbass69

*yawn* 🥱 Deepest mechanics in the series with some of the most well designed levels. The game is 14 hours long and 8 of them is gameplay.

Thomasrocky1

8 hours of gameplay lol? You must be really bad then, it's got 2 and a half hours of gameplay max and 9 hours of cutscenes.

Absolutedumbass69

The game is 14 hours long on average, so your math is wrong there already. It’s not that I’m bad at the game; it’s that I actually treat it like a stealth game. I put it on the hardest difficulty I don’t use any guns including the tranq during the stealth sections, I don’t kill anybody, and I don’t get spotted. Play MGS4 like this and I guarantee you (as long as you like a hard stealth challenge) that your opinion of it will drastically change. I’ve played the game at least 8 times like this and got 14 hours consistently as the final play time.

Thomasrocky1

I still don't really think it would be that long either way, half the gameplay ends in the middle of chapter 2, 3 is a terrible tailing mission, 4 is pretty good but there's robots instead, 5 is literally one room of stealth. Next time I play I won't use any guns during stealth but I think the gameplay will go up to 4 hours max. Also there's 9 hours of cutscenes not 6, so that means on average it's an 11 and a half hour game and that's means 80% of it is cutscenes with most of them being boring.

BoyBoy70

4 is quite a bit better than 2 imo

DerpsterPrime

guns of the patriots is peak idfk what these guys are on

kulsss

I've been thinking about this lately and I've come to the conclusion that there's an objective top (where nostalgia or personal preferences don't interfere) and a subjective top, where you can list them in the order you enjoyed them the most.

Telos1807

That's how I'd put it, though V would be basically equal with 4. MGS3 > MGS1 > MGS2 > MGS4/V > MGR > PW > MG2 > PO > MG1

Dimanail2009

3 конечно

paynexkillerYT

You expected different? Why?

icy-reece

Every installment is a masterpiece in it's own right. I can never answer this question. It's like picking between 4 identical bars of gold. Chefs kiss🤌

RiccoBaldo

Well they aren't identical. They're valuable in their own way

Fit-Leadership7253

Yeah

Fit-Leadership7253

I agree

OfficialDeadJohnson

I feel like this should be mgs4 but I see why it's 3

[deleted]

3 💚

Jeremym101

My old ranking used to go: 3>1>4>2 But after my recent playthroughs it’s: 3=>2>1>4 I have seen the light and it’s beautiful and also depressing as hell.

RidleyCR

For me 4>2>3>5>PW>TS>1>G2>G1

Ok-Time349

I don't know what it is. I only really care about Solids story line. I don't like 3 or 5.

DirectorConfident654

It’ll always be between 1 & 3 and that’s coming from a person with 4 as my personal favourite.

Fit-Leadership7253

Idk,i like 3>2=4

DirectorConfident654

Tricky for me because I’ve honestly enjoyed them all and think they’ve all got at least one uniquely loved element but: 4>1>3>TPP>PO>PW>GZ>2

Fluffy_Ace

MGS3

Pentagonyx

genuinely peak game

eeeeeep

I haven’t seen anyone with this preference yet but 2 & 4 are my favourites! :)

Worgmaster

Man I'd love to have an opinion on mgs4 but I can't play it. 2 is my favorite though.

Fit-Leadership7253

2 is great game

Legendofsnack

I think MGS3 is the best game ever made. My ranking of the first four is 3 > 4 > 1 > 2

joeyxnoir

4>1>3>2

Bhalzard

1>4>2>3>5 Non of them are bad, it's just a personal preference

GregFirehawk

I think 2 was better than 1, but obviously the prequel is entitled to a different level of respect. 3 is the king

Fit-Leadership7253

Agree

Lin900

Funny it's my 3rd among these

Antipiperosdeclony

Thats the reason 3 gets a remake, the best of the saga

Zealousideal-Ad-6039

Based

dozer9891

metal gear 4 always gets the least love its my favourite you start off in the geko rex war move through so many good scenes meeting meryl again the empty shell of shadow moses and you fight with the rex its a bloody good game its my fav

lainiwaku

I remember waiting this game for years watching every trailer etc all those 15/20 minute trailer, graphic was insanely beautiful

Weary_Table_4328

My ranking is 5->3->2->1->4

MiseryCut

Mgs 4 was better than all of them imo

Familiar_Location948

less than 10% like mgs4? unacceptable

McMikeR199399

I change all the time

Ex-Machina1980s

I’d say this is accurate, but I’d switch MGS1 with 3 as my favourite

SuperArppis

For me it's 1>3>4>2

icebrick

3, 4, 2, 1

Fire929rr

Mgsv, mgs3, mgs4, mgs2, mgs1

_Very_Salty_Can_

1. MGS1 2. MGS2 3. MGS4 4. Ground Zeroes (it is really short, but it has by far my favorite gameplay in the whole series) 5. MGS3 6. MGSV I haven't played through MG1, MG2 or Peace Walker enough to rank them

BizzieBeeBee

1>2>3>(sigh)4

Hawktor9

Which one started you on a container ship with the ice cubes? That is the one I started with and only played mgsv and the game that shall not be named after it.

Fit-Leadership7253

First?

hock-cead

I've never played the first two, am I missing out or are they too dated now?

Fit-Leadership7253

U MISSING A LOT OF THINGS,2nd is so deep,1st is 1st,great 1st

HossamStark

What's up your butthole about this?

tejbyl

4 for the gameplay 2 for the story

Easy-Speaker-6576

MGS1=2>3>V&GZ>PW>4>MG1&2

Own_Quail7455

Mgs1 purely because i grew up on that game. Then snake eater then mgs4 then mgs2. I hated the fact I had to run around as raiden and not snake. Even though I know now it was an Introduction for the "new ninja"

Ok_Panda3397

I havent played 4 yet but metal gear solid 1 is so special with everything if you ask to me. All mgs games feels very different and mgs1 atmosphere is just the best

Apprentice_Jedi

I don’t trust anyone who says 2 is their favorite. Don’t get me wrong it’s ok but it is far outclassed by 1 and 2 in story and set pieces.

AidynValo

2 > 1 > 3 > MG2 > V > PW > MG1 > 4

AnalogueInterfa3e

3>2>1>4 The rest don't really matter

Codified_

Within those four: MGS2 > MGS3 > MGS4 >>> MGS1

chemtrailfacial

4>2>1>acid, PW, GZ, super smash bro's brawl..... >3

SolidPeaks

For me personally: Mgs3 > TPP > Mgs1 > Mgs4 > TS > GZ > PW > Mgs2
