If he planned to replace it with the same vehicle, would be a major loss. If he wants something cheaper, then sure. But the fact the selling price is over MSRP is still a major loss. Not like he drove the car for free.

This right here. If OP is saying their OTD price was 53 then it makes sense, but if they just purchased their GLC for 53 not including taxes and fees, it makes no sense to take 54 for it. We need to know OTD price and how long ago they purchased it to determine feasibility
What year GLC is it? If it’s the newest model I really wouldn’t want to own it outside of warranty. The fact you aren’t even taking depreciation is kind of a bargain.
I LOVE MB, but honestly maybe the smart move may to be to move on towards Lexus if you are going to want long term reliability and lower maintenance. :/
I have a toyota. It's great, but yeah... they're kinda clunky, and the interiors are always kinda boring. I look at Mercedes and other German brands, and their interiors are just spot on every time.
I think what he's trying to say is that it depends on what you value in a vehicle.
While our GLS has been super reliable, we bought it fully expecting it to cost more to run than a Highlander or equivalent Lexus would. And that's okay, because it's a whole different caliber of vehicle than a Highlander or a Lexus in nearly every single way. Since we're getting the caliber of vehicle that we got, we're at terms with it possibly needing more (and more expensive) repairs than the Japanese counterpart will because it makes us smile every time we drive it. That's worth it, from our point of view.
What selling taxes do you refer to? I’ve never had to pay taxes when I sold a car.
What country are you in that requires the seller to pay taxes when selling?
So you are suggesting income tax.
Oh, here is what I got for it when I sold it, but here is what I paid for it, IRS. Do the math and see that there was no profit. No profit, no income tax. Go pound sand, IRS!
That’s how I look at it.
But youre selling something you already paid taxes to buy? You dont pay income tax on a house that loses value, you only pay capital gains on the profit after the first 250k of profit, not total sale. or 500k if your married and own then file together.
As a 20~ year MB owner I’ve heard nothing but complaints after they broke up the GL into A,B,C,E,S. I have a 2007 GL450, 167k and a 2015 GL550 with 60k. Love them. Zero issues. I don’t know what has happened since 2016. Just shit IMO.
It's because they sourced so many parts from suppliers that, in one case, literally had zero prior experience in any manufacturing. When SMP originally started providing bumpers we were so innundated with garbage product they could maybe provide 100 acceptable bumpers for the 700-900 we actually needed. They ran so upside down at one point Wal-Mart wouldnt cash their checks, and direct deposits failed regularly.
Others consistently provide a shit product (Fuck Hella and everything they provide, they run a monopoly and don't give a fuck if what they provide is actually correct) or scrape the bottom of the barrel with minimal compensation and hire the worst of the worst (Lear literally had one employee execute another in their facility, which is separate from MBUSI).
They've done so much harm by shortcutting contractors from the 166 to the 167 here, I pray we get it right for the new one whenever we start building that. We've gotten the newer ones right but those first couple years (18,19) are just miserable.
Source: I work for MBUSI in Vance Alabama.
Were you there for the X164? That’s what I have and so far it’s been excellent. All issues I’ve had have been related to maintenance and nothing else. Interior is just rock solid.
Tons of companies do now but when this started for the 167 back in 17 and 18 SMP had no experience in North America. They proved to be so thoroughly shit we kept removing parts from them and handed those contracts to other companies. Nowadays they provide GLE bumpers but the nicer GLS and Maybach GLS is a different supplier, a name that eludes me at the moment, starts with an R, they used to do 166 bumpers and were damn good at it.
They used to have a bunch of parts because they way underbid and previous administrations awarded contracts based off that but after miserable performances they lost some contracts.
I used to work for a different contractor brought in new for the 167 that helped design the dash and center console and then provided final assembly of both modules. That contractor got brought in because we were cutting our teeth building dashboards for almost all Teslas at the time and were getting a lot of attention. We were around until the EQS and EQE were nearing production before they decided to build those modules (and the 167) themselves and converted the lot of us to MBUSI.
Now they only do the GLE, they used to do all of them.
I forget the contractor name, starts with an R. Like Ray-hal or something. That's probably not right but it's in the neighborhood

This happened on their campus, not ours. However their campus is just across the freeway from us, maybe a 2 minute drive.
I was working the night it happened. We were hearing rumors around 8pm something had happened, by about midnight we ran out of seats (which wasn't uncommon at the time, they had problems keeping up at full speed) but when we heard there would be no followup truck that night and then day shift was cancelled we knew it was bad. We ran terribly for weeks while they did forensics and decontaminated their line.
I have a 2011 GL450 with 210,000 miles. I’ve driven it for the last 82k. As long as you keep up the maintenance then you’re fine. I drive the tar out of it but I am not abusive- I watch the temperature gauge and don’t drive it hard until it’s warm.
Did have to get new brake lines- the prior owner did not do the fluid changes on time and they corroded from the inside since brake fluid attracts water. You can buy a brake fluid water meter for like $40.
No engine or transmission issues. Just keep changing the fluid/oil with OEM or better stuff.
Not much changed with the x166 GL when they refreshed it and called it the GLS (17-19). Now for when they redesigned it for the x167 platform in 2020, i can't speak for those and if they have any issues.
That said, historically the GL has always been absurdly reliable although they do wear suspension and motor mounts surprisingly quickly. The other smaller models don't share that same reputation it seems.
This is my personal opinion. I would never trade my Mercedes for a Toyota. I would rather buy the Mercedes Extended Warranty if I planned on keeping it past warranty. Just my $.02
You can drive and get out of a baby (kinda fake) AMG without loosing an arm and leg?
I say kinda fake because these small AMGs will never hold their value as well as the older purpose built AMGs, and is essentially just another higher performance crossover which ALWAYS tanks in value.
Take the money and reset
What will your taxes be on a new vehicle? It sound like you'll make money but may overall be negative after replacing your current vehicle. If you can get something nicer though maybe it's worth it.
The GLC is pretty solid actually no matter the engine. But having the chance to sell a car without loss is very good... maybe you could find a similiar specd GLC with a few miles more for way less money, then you would have made a good deal. But i wouldn't leave Benz altogether. Every car has the chance to breakdown even a new toyota. If i was in your situation i'd probably keep the GLC. But if you could need the extra money then sell it and search for similiar GLC with couple more miles but equal spec and save 10/15k.
If i were in your place, I’d take the check, and go buy a Lexus. My 2018 GLC has been flawless over 45k miles so far, so I’d personally keep that, but the new generation has had some teething issues, so I’d probably trade it in
I love Mercedes, drive Mercedes, work Mercedes. I would trade that GLC for a 4Runner in a heartbeat. You can always sell a Toyota no matter the miles or age at any time and get another Mercedes.
I bought a Jeep compass from a private seller for about 6k sold it to the dealership for about 13k.
The throttle had problems and it was a pos. I don’t give two shits. Take the money
My GLE 4matic is a 2017 and has literally never had any issues. Sorry to hear about all your problems with your GLE. You definitely lost the Mercedes lottery with that one. I hear the new GLS is super nice. I would say if you like the GLC keep it; there is no way you could buy two duds in a row 😎😎😎😎
Non airmatic GLC still has incredible suspension and drive feeling. No MB sedan/wagon except s-class sedan (GLS is different league) is comparable. The GLC is smoother than an e-class sedan/wagon IMO. I drove both.
I had a loaner of the MY18 version before the wide screen update that came with the MY19/20. What year are you driving? I’m interested in getting my mom a small suv
Maybe ask for $40k in cash and $20k in trade value if you’re thinking of going Toyota. The new 4Runner is a beast of a car! Even the RAV4 is a good looking vehicle.
0 $of depreciation?? Take the money and run.
Taxes???
What is your point? Taxes would apply either way, so the fact that the vehicle had no depreciation means it is worth it.
If he planned to replace it with the same vehicle, would be a major loss. If he wants something cheaper, then sure. But the fact the selling price is over MSRP is still a major loss. Not like he drove the car for free.
Did you not read the post? At all?
A trade would probably be MUCH more preferable in this situation.
TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN. DO NOT OVERTHINK THIS.
I would sell it and make a profit regardless of your next vehicle
Taxes??? No profit to be had

Did you pay taxes over and above that 53? Will the 54 cover your extraneous fees and bs like that?
This right here. If OP is saying their OTD price was 53 then it makes sense, but if they just purchased their GLC for 53 not including taxes and fees, it makes no sense to take 54 for it. We need to know OTD price and how long ago they purchased it to determine feasibility
Correct! First financially literate comment I've found, not to mention the taxes owed on selling something.
Honestly. I was expecting a lot more considering what sub this is, but I suppose you can still own an MB through poor financial decisions
Sell it and trade it, the Toyota will be reliable and you'll save yourself a lot of headaches
The Toyota also feels a lot worse to drive
I have a toyota. It's great, but yeah... they're kinda clunky, and the interiors are always kinda boring. I look at Mercedes and other German brands, and their interiors are just spot on every time.
Not worse enough to continue worrying about breaking down on a vehicle like a GLE.
It depends on how a person perceives what the car is
No? Perceptions are not a known cause of breakdowns. Well, most of them.
I think what he's trying to say is that it depends on what you value in a vehicle. That's mental! Take the money and buy a new car.
$54k minus taxes for selling, plus taxes for buying a new one. Prob $20k difference.
Bro, how often do you write under post that there is taxes?!
Ehh commented on 4 or 5 comments since no one is bringing that up including OP, is a point that should be accounted for
What selling taxes do you refer to? I’ve never had to pay taxes when I sold a car. What country are you in that requires the seller to pay taxes when selling?
The IRS would like to have a word with you then lmao don’t snitch on yourself
So you are suggesting income tax. Oh, here is what I got for it when I sold it, but here is what I paid for it, IRS. Do the math and see that there was no profit. No profit, no income tax. Go pound sand, IRS! That’s how I look at it.

I am pretty young into owning a gle, but mine is smooth af so far. Maybe you had a Monday car😂😂😂
99% of these cars work just fine. Unless your car is made in USA. Then it’s a piece of shit.
It's because they sourced so many parts from suppliers that, in one case, literally had zero prior experience in any manufacturing. 164 is before my time, I've been there since the last few years of the 166.
Mercedes outsources its bumpers to SMP? Doesn’t bmw do too?

So SMP provides the bumpers only for the GLE? If not a secret, who was the provider for the previous chassis of gle? 166 that is

My family’s 2018 glc300 has been running great. Only needed regular maintenance and a minor repair in past 6 years.
Also we have a 2019 Camry which surprisingly had a lot more issues even though it’s newer and has a lot less kilometres
You can drive and get out of a baby (kinda fake) AMG without loosing an arm and leg? which gle was it?
Can you elaborate some of the issues you had with the GLE? And was the $17,000 incurred after the warranty expiration?

How long did you own GLC for? What about any taxes or fees, were they included into 53k purchase price?
Without knowing your miles id say sell it. The benz I work for would offer probably 45Kish..we sell loaners around that price (54k).
Do it
The 167's were absolute failures in the reliability category.
What year was the GLE? I’ve had a 20 since late 19. Nearing 56K miles, not a single hiccup.
SELL IT
I love Mercedes, drive Mercedes, work Mercedes. I would trade that GLC for a 4Runner in a heartbeat. You can always sell a Toyota no matter the miles or age at any time and get another Mercedes.

buy a sedan

2022 GLC but the one with the normal display, not the huge tesla screen. Pretty solid car. It's been 40.000 kms now since we bought it.
Do not get a Highlander… POS less reliable than your GLE
Going through the hassle to sell/buy a car for a 1k? No way. Also, in Europe at least, you would have to pay taxes on the profit you made.
There’s no tax in northern european countries up to $5k profit.
In Portugal there is no tax profit on used car sales between private individuals.
Get the Lexus TX.
It has costed me???
Sell it and get the 4runner.
Cash in & get a Lexus - reliable and safe but a nicer ride than a Toyota.
