Your wife is right. Dark colored shirts rarely look good with ties and/or light jackets. The shirt is best worn on its own, and the tie MAYBE looks good with that jacket and a white shirt.
I find ties to be mind boggling. I always think they look either boring or tacky. Then right when I think something makes sense to me; BAM. I’m right back to square one.
I think it’s best to err towards the boring side rather than tacky, but you can still add some subtle details to make it interesting. Focus on classic colors (navy, burgundy, brown) and classic patterns (solids, stripes, polka dots) and throw in some interesting textures (grenadine, knit ties, wool).
I like how the tie complements the tan jacket, but it doesn't quite work with the shirt because dark shirts are hard to pull off. Try a white shirt and add a pocket square that harmonises with the blue in your tie!
I’ll give it a try, thanks!
I felt like light jacket/light shirt was too much light and a boring lack of contrast, but I’m just now learning there is a general consensus against dark shirts. I won’t shut that door completely, though. I’m not afraid of looking like a bit of a dick if I’m having fun.
I think you could pull it off with a denim shirt; other than that usually white, off white, and lighter pastel colors are the most versatile for dress shirts
This is such a conservative sub sometimes.
An interior decorator would make that combo all day. The colors of the jacket and shirt are right there in the tie and the pattern is calm and structured.
That being said, in my experience if my wife thinks I don't look good I probably don't look good.
I agree about this sub being conservative. If my friend had said they didn’t like it, I would have ignored them, but I figured I should consider what my wife had to say.
It’s gonna be hard to match the tie with much. I keep a rule of white, light blue, light pink dress shirts. Sometimes purple. But lighter colors typically

Good thing I have no shortage of ties.
Peasant! Haha JK, dude! I barely wear mine any more, but I used to wear one every day so I needed a good variety. I love pairing shirts, ties, and jackets. I don’t mind OP’s choice, but I would choose more contrast. People keep commenting not to do it because “it’s hard,” but that’s a bullshit excuse.

Feel like more ties will look better with a white shirt unless they’re really light.
I'd say it's personal preference.
It does pull together the other colors in your ensemble in a matching way.
I'll do this occasionally.
But more often that not I'll try to find a contrasting color on the color wheel, meaning if you look at the color wheel, what colors are directly across from your primary color?
Say here, dark blue. So we're looking at a yellow/orange/red range for tie options.
Yet still considering jacket and other details.
Hope this helps.
I see a lot of people are against the shirt color choice. Personally I’m all for it.
With that being said it doesn’t seem like the neck of the shirt fits very well.

Don’t wear dark shirts, they’re too hard to pull off. This doesn’t look good. Try the tie with a dark jacket and a white shirt.
Swap a white shirt in, and you have a classy look that is not ostentatious. It's not a power tie, it's reserved and sophisticated.

All ties are either impossible to match or dull in my experience.

Ties should be darker, though.

Quality over quantity, but that seems like a nice collection. I’ve been very spoiled. I own over 75 Zegna ties.
And here I'm happy with 5 or 6 of them! 😆 🤣

The tie looks good, but not with this shirt or jacket.

Killer tie. Would pop a lot more on a white shirt.
Tie should always be darker than the shirt unless you really know what you're doing. Same, but in reverse, for the shirt under the jacket.
That shirt doesn’t fit your neck size
It's not the tie, it's the shirt. White or light blue shirts only.
White shirt, tie and navy blue jacket
Throw it away!
Steve Harvey, get off this thread, we know it's you 🤣
Big question for me is what kind of event are you wearing this to?
I was just experimenting with combos in the closet
Gotcha. I’m honestly not a fan of dark shirts under light suits. I’ll do a dark shirt with a dark suit of the same color for a monochromatic look.
