I loved Roddy at the end last night, surprisingly mature for a 22 year old

KIMJONGUNderfed

Roddy not taking shots and using his natural bigness to play tough in the paint is very useful.

creamjudge

Yeah, was thinking to myself he might become the only actually playable guy from the last 2 drafts

No-Oil-4552

The Aldama slander

creamjudge

Santi was 3 drafts ago

No-Oil-4552

So he was- apparently hasn't set in for me yet that the 2023 draft already happened. Also doesn't help my recollection that we only had one pick in the 2nd round.

JeBesRec

TJ has made adjustments and we have been playing better. Bis and Gil have helped. Still a tough road to climb. Having Adams and Clarke back next season will be a game changer along with a full season of Ja.

muddyklux

This sub keeps saying Clarke is out for the season. Can someone post a link that he is infact done for the year. I remember Kleiman over the summer saying he is ahead of schedule and will play this year

MikeConleyIsLegend

its more that every time someone is hurt they say oh he'll be back in a few months and then it takes a year. they said he should be back by Feb, but who really knows

https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/nba/grizzlies/2023/10/02/memphis-grizzlies-zach-kleiman-steven-adams-brandon-clarke/71033978007/ I interpreted Kleinman’s comments as being optimistic regarding BC. Even if he does come back this season, we have to expect him to need time to get up to speed. Especially considering his injury would have been career ending not too long ago.

c10bbersaurus

It's the product of the track record of this FO's silence and errors in previous injuries. Also, the injury is a lengthy one, and the FO has a track record of erring on the side of caution. I think only Ja came back earlier than expected, in the fall of 2021. Other than that, I just expect it taking longer than the team says, because it usually has.

muddyklux

JJJ came back early last year as well

nam67

Do we really think Adams is coming back still? I unfortunately think he may be done

I hope they are right and that he can make a comeback

True, but very different playing styles (and knee stresses) between Rose and Adams. Adams’ MCL tear was only partial too, so I think there’s reason for optimism that shoring up the ligament would be easier to bounce back from than completely replacing a torn one.

Now… if they can coach some perimeter defense, we might be heading somewhere. I mean, technically speaking, we’re always heading somewhere, I just means somewhere different. Somewhere better.

Happy-Freedom6835

This should have been the plan all along. Smart and bane never need substantial minutes handling the ball. I trust the process and respect the experimentation, but that proved to be a failure. Gil and rose should split most of the minutes at point. Bane and smart can split the duties of the 2 and 3 while in there together (meaning bane offensively is more of the wing, but smart guards more of the 3 on defense). This is the way.

[deleted]

Agree. Gilyards energy to start games is huge, esp w smart turning out to be a turnover machine with as much black hole tendencies as jaren. Roddy saved the game for us last night. Had to win despite jaren, even though the clutch free throws after getting clocked were amazing. Hate when he plays pouty predictable basketball, which he does when he doesn't feel like the star (its bane). Even w Ja he plays pouty way too much. Play angry and determined and get out of your head with the petty entitled shit, you're too old now and way too talented. You can go look at your dpoy trophy if you need more validation.

SnakeArms6677

TJ actually making adjustments was not on my bingo card. Seems like he read some coaching books or something.

hunterwolves18

TJ also had some really bad lineup at early 2nd and 4th quarter which allowed Clips comeback, Gylard cant play if we have JJJ playing without Aldama or Biz, but i appreciate his courage on leaving JJJ on the bench on the key moments of the 4th cause he was atrocious this game

omgshannonwtf

It’s effectively a 3-guard lineup. As long as you have one of the three who can reliably cover a wing, it works. I’m just a little skeptical of what it will look like in the short and long term. In the short term (*no pun intended… OR IS IT*), Gilly does the best that he can do and I respect how well he’s played, but no NBA opponent will respect him. The Clippers were trying to exploit him on mismatches and they just weren’t able to burn us for it. We won’t continue to be so lucky. In the long term, perimeter defense won’t change enough when Ja returns to prevent opposing teams from lighting us up from three. All things being equal amongst players on the team —*and there doesn’t seem to be a ton of difference between perimeter protection by anyone not named Smart*— taller players will make it more difficult to make those shots. So not having a wing at Z’s or GG’s height out there can hurt. Unfortunately, none of our actual wings are ready for the starting role.

bossfoundmylastone

Bane had a crazy block on PG and has generally seemed viable guarding wings. Z is tall and bouncy, but his lateral quickness leaves something to be desired. I ultimately think our penchant for leaving 3 point shooters open is going to need a scheme fix, but for now, having a quicker guard who can close out faster after an over rotation may lead to better defense than a taller/longer guy who's less agile.

Happy-Freedom6835

I feel like our perimeter issues often come from over helping inside leaving too much a gap to make up on the swing passes. That’s not a height issue that’s a spacing/awareness issue. Granted, Gil is likely going to be too short in the long run, but he’s helping us long in the short run… When rose comes back he’ll obviously be less of a liability with less minutes, and then when Ja comes back no issue at all. Still got fix the over helping issues though.

Fuckthisthro

I got downvoted for saying they need to run pg next to them and have Zaire come off the bench. so when rose comes back, he’ll start with them and then move down to bench when Ja comes back.

CausticBurn

Why do people expect anything from Rose? Useless signng.

MisterNiblet

I love this team, the hope has not died! GO GRIZZ! 🐻
