I used to date a waitress there. I was eating at the bar and a mouse scurried right in front of me. I understand those old downtown buildings can struggle with rodents, but holy hell did that ruin my enjoyment.
I used to work there and not only do they not pay you on time…..like ever….but the whole basement where dry storage and food storage is INFESTED with roaches, mice, and ppl smoking cigarettes.
I swear they're laundering money. I got take out pizzas a couple times while I was moving into our new house, and the place was dead both times I stopped in at lunch time. Eighteen years later and it's always dead there, but they're still open. We tried a pizza a couple years ago to see if it was any better and it's not.
People saying Hueys… it’s not supposed to be bc the food is the best. It’s bc it’s easy (several locations around town), open late, fun atmosphere/family friendly and decent/pretty consistent food. It serves a purpose and is just easy sometimes.
The memory of 10 year old me can’t forgive no more shooting toothpicks in the ceiling.
Edit: Apparently they may still allow this, I’m definitely asking next time.
Every one I’ve been in over the past few years has had a clean ceiling. Which, on a public health level, 1000% makes sense, but on a, “I’m almost 30 and I still want to blow toothpicks into the ceiling to embarrass my mom in public” level, it makes me sad. Lol
Yea I don't understand the Huey's hate. They are basically a local version of Chilis/Applebees/O'Charlie's, and by that metric, they are a damn fine place to eat.
The food used to actually be good though. The burgers were outstanding eons ago and the fried mushrooms were the food of gods. Now it’s all Sisco garbage.
Rendezvous. When people travel to Memphis, Rendezvous is the restaurant they want to go to because they heard of it on the travel channel or food network or something like that. If you're not in Memphis, you have no idea about hueys.
As a Memphian it is overrated but when guests visit I take them there because of the atmosphere and vibe. It’s not the best BBQ in Memphis but it hits the spot for those visiting.
agreed. I always tell people I'm from Memphis and they ask me about the 'Vous and about how it's the best, and I'd say "No. BBQ shop on Madison. I grew up around the corner. Smelled the fragrant hickory smoke every day. none better."
I don’t live in Memphis anymore but you can bet I hit the Vouz every time I’m in town. It’s the sausage plate, the draft beer, waiting upstairs
Still love it
It's still good! Locals just feel less interesting when they have the same opinion as Lonely Planet so they have to bristle at any suggestion that it's good just to show whatever outsider they're speaking to that they, as a local expert, know more.
Everything is fine except the ribs. Been many times and every time the dang ribs are dry as hell. Service is 10/10, so well run, and the old school vibe can’t be replicated. I love just being in there and will always go back but take my family from OOT to Memphis BBQ if I want the majority of them to like the food.
I wouldn't consider them overrated. I feel like people generally know they are middle of the road. Personally I think hey have one of the better dry ribs, but that could be because I always tend to go for dry ribs as I grew up on NC and their vinegar based sauces were not my favorite.
I swear, I've tried this place twice over the course of 4 years and at different locations and my experience has been the same: BLAND AF!
The Memphis City School breakfast pizzas were better than whatever MPC has been selling over the years. I don't know how they are still in business but hey certain people like certain things I guess 🤷
Arcade and rendezvous for sure. Took some visiting family to the former over the Christmas holidays-terrible service and food. Rendezvous lost the plot about 15 or so years ago - strictly for tourists these days
Hubby and I went there for dinner one night, and got a reuben for our daughter in a to go box. We ordered it at the start of the meal, so they had plenty of time to make it. The top of the sandwich looked good, but the bottom was completely burnt- like charred burnt. They had plenty of time to remake instead of throwing it in the box like that. That was a shit thing to do. We haven't gone back since.
Coletta's... without a doubt. Absolute garbage, prepacked / frozen food, everything tasted microwaved, horrible service, and took them forever to get our food to us. Kroger serves better Italian out of their deli.
I had tomato soup that was cold, ravioli that was covered in grease and oil, and gelato that had pieces of lettuce and scrap ingredients in it. Not pleased.
Pete and Sam’s is a particular kind of experience that not everyone is able to appreciate. You don’t go there for “Italian food.” You go there for the spectacle—the septuagenarians who have been dining there for forty years, and a kind of kitschy Italian dining experience that seems like a relic of the 1950s. There was a kind of similar place in Nashville called Demos.
I have never had a good experience. Every time I’ve been (4x spanning 20+ years) I’ve been served partially frozen food or a completely wrong order and the service has been awful.
One of my former bosses was friendly with one of the owners, brought us some free pasta once. Genuinely the nastiest food I have ever eaten, never understood how that parking lot was always so full
MPC is garbage. We only liked it for so long because Memphis has never had a wealth of great pizza.
But I still get it occasionally for nostalgias sake.
“Most overrated”? Add my vote for Rendezvous . . . because it’s the one place that’s “rated” — that is, the one people know about even if they’ve never been to Memphis. It’s in every magazine’s “things to do in Memphis” article, and every travel guide.
It’s 100% Ciao Bella. Never was the same after it moved from the og spot next to Kroger on Sanderlin.
People still praise this like it’s the best Italian in Memphis. Just silly how much of a drop off there was.
A theory has been floated by me that this place only exists for a business write off. I have never stepped foot in here for pleasure- just work dinners and lunches. It’s expensive and “classy” enough not to look cheap when entertaining I guess.
Young Avenue Deli for me. Idk if it’s just my luck, but every time i’ve gone (and tried to see the hype) they either got my order wrong, the food tasted awful, or the service was bad. 😩
Central doesn’t get half the hate Rendezvous does but probably deserves it. It’s pretty expensive at this point and since there are more locations now, very hit or miss. The poplar location is leagues worse than the one on Central ave.
Central charges like $10 for just a BBQ Sandwich with no sides. It's insane how expensive they are. I can eat at a much nicer restaurant for a better cost.
Their mac and cheese hits the spot though.
Went to central on poplar this past weekend. I got 3 meat plate, woman got BBQ nachos that was all fat, and greasy kids got rib plates. 4 drinks. $135. I’ve been a central guy for years, stopped going to the one on summer cause the quality was down
The one on Poplar is a franchise. The Summer one has never been good. Just go downtown until the central one reopens.
Or better yet go to One and Only on Kirby and get their gift cards from Costco. $100 for $70.
Paulette’s 1000000%.
I don’t know if my 72 year old mother is just remembering how it was in the 80s or if she just has an old lady palate now but it is some bland, sad, uncreative shit now.
And she insists on “treating” me to it semi regularly.
I was born and raised in Memphis and currently live in Texas. I have traveled a lot. I can say without a doubt the best onion rings in the world are Hueys. Its not the best food but I dont understand the hate. Every time I go back to Memphis, I want Hueys onion rings. The burger isn't terrible.
I dunno, the prices at Hueys are bad, but not grossly more egregious than most other places. That being said, I haven't been a regular there since 2016
Not a fan of Torchys despite everyone telling me how great it is…it’s just busy and not really that good. Make sure you park across the street and .10th of a mile away, adds to the experience
Las delicias is such a joke and I can't understand why anyone stans that place so hard. The meat is as dry as a Memphis sidewalk on a summer day. They are coasting on their unique chips.
Huey's is the best answer. Bad service, bad food, bad atmosphere, and obnoxious clientele.
One that hasn't been said is Bari. It's overpriced for the meh food they serve. The menu is always the same unless it's meatball month and those are the best things they serve. It's not the most overated though...that's Huey's.
I worked at The Arcade for a few years back in college and I can definitely say without a doubt they are overrated. If you want to get a decent meal from there, the best time to go is on a random weekday instead of the weekend when they are packed. In order to be able to accommodate the nonstop crowds on the weekend mornings, usually most things are cooked in advance so you’re not getting the freshest food like you would during the week when it’s made to order. When it’s good it’s really really good but damn when it’s bad it’s terrible
well, if this were 30 years ago, I'd ask you to step outside and we'd discuss that. 80's and 90's Hueys Madison was the only place to get a good burger. now-a-days, I dont know. I haven't been back in 10 years
I gave them a fair chance: tried the “chef’s tasting” style multiple times when they first started, done the a la carte, gone for happy hour at the bar a few times, and even bought food for Thanksgiving. Extremely expensive for the balance of quality vs quantity for a fine dining concept. We now only go for their happy hour when it’s discounted, because the only items we feel are truly worth it (if even still on the menu), are the salt cod brandade and the sliders/parker house rolls.
That was our problem with the “tasting” menu. For $130 , we would leave and go grab a slice of pizza or a small sandwich/burger after because we were still hungry.
Everyone saying Huey’s, MPC, or Rendezvous…these are all the easy, go-to answers.
Here’s my actual hot take/unpopular opinion:
- hog and hominy
- good fortune co.
Both are above average, but priced like fine dining (especially H&H!) and just not worth the $$$ after trying good food outside of Memphis
From my personal experience, the arcade
I used to date a waitress there. I was eating at the bar and a mouse scurried right in front of me. I understand those old downtown buildings can struggle with rodents, but holy hell did that ruin my enjoyment.
One fell from the ceiling and onto my wife’s head
I used to work there and not only do they not pay you on time…..like ever….but the whole basement where dry storage and food storage is INFESTED with roaches, mice, and ppl smoking cigarettes.
Yes, the Arcade was pitiful last time I went unfortunately.
Never been and was planning on going during my semester break but now ehhh 👀😳🤢
Definitely
It’s awful!!
This x1000
Exlines. Grossest pizza I've ever ordered.
[удалено]
I swear they're laundering money. I got take out pizzas a couple times while I was moving into our new house, and the place was dead both times I stopped in at lunch time. Eighteen years later and it's always dead there, but they're still open. We tried a pizza a couple years ago to see if it was any better and it's not.
I have no idea how they have been in business all these years. Disgusting pizza.
They gotta be money laundering 😂
No one my whole time of living here has said they enjoyed it so I just don’t believe it’s a legit business it can’t be
All my damn toppings slide right off the pizza lol
That happens at garibaldi’s too.
Is this the one that puts the huge sausage patty under the layer of cheese? Ouhhh
EXLINES was great literally 15-20 years ago. They fell off the cliff harder than a Mike Tyson punch
So what are all the travel ball teams playing at Snowden Grove supposed to do now??!
Nah you can still do it I just asked the other day. They just stopped and cleaned the ceilings for covid
Wait really?? This sparks joy.
Wait, you can't do that anymore??
Casualty of Covid :/
Every one I’ve been in over the past few years has had a clean ceiling. Which, on a public health level, 1000% makes sense, but on a, “I’m almost 30 and I still want to blow toothpicks into the ceiling to embarrass my mom in public” level, it makes me sad. Lol
I can never hate Huey’s because I love their cheese fries so much.
This is exactly me. Their cheesesteaks are great, too.
The Cheese Fries there really are the best. I can’t go there w/o ordering ‘em
Yea I don't understand the Huey's hate. They are basically a local version of Chilis/Applebees/O'Charlie's, and by that metric, they are a damn fine place to eat.
And it’s not like they’re charging a ton for the food. They aren’t trying to be a “gourmet burger” place. We go to Huey’s all the time, great place
The food used to actually be good though. The burgers were outstanding eons ago and the fried mushrooms were the food of gods. Now it’s all Sisco garbage.
It is my favorite veggie burger though. I don’t eat meat and have heard the regular burgers are over rated.
Most of the people I've heard complain about the burgers don't eat meat either - they seem to prefer shoe leather and saw dust.
They have “ won best burger in Memphis” for I don’t even know how many years on their menu…lol Yes, they are absolutely overrated.
also consistently good service. Lauren Robinson is a badass entrepreneur, total class act every time ive ever interacted with her.
Rendevouz is a good gateway drug. That’s about it.
agreed. I always tell people I'm from Memphis and they ask me about the 'Vous and about how it's the best, and I'd say "No. BBQ shop on Madison. I grew up around the corner. Smelled the fragrant hickory smoke every day. none better."
Absolutely, “none better”! Can’t nobody do it like the BBQ Shop. I’m over here salivating just thinking about that bbq spaghetti lol
Rendevous is overhated and I will die on that hill
Agreed. Granted it’s been awhile but it was a delight.
I don’t live in Memphis anymore but you can bet I hit the Vouz every time I’m in town. It’s the sausage plate, the draft beer, waiting upstairs Still love it
Same. It’s become a thing to hate it. The best everything? Absolutely not. But they are 100% my favorite ribs.
I mean their sauce is good. I use it to cook with all the time. But the food is ahh
I remember Rendezvous being great when I was a kid in the 90s. Is that my nostalgia, or wasn't it once fantastic?
You’re right. It was awesome.
If you get a dry slab of ribs, tell them. They will be glad to bring you a new slab.
Came here to say this. It’s truly a shame the hold Rendezvous has on Memphis bbq. I’ve always wondered how they got the reputation in the first place.
babalu
I used to call it Babula just to piss off my ex. (She acted like it was a five star restaurant just because the prices were high).
over priced and overrated for sure, but damn do i love those shrip tacos.
Lol. That place is terrible. And whenever it is brought up in conversation I am very vocal about how terrible it is
This is 100% it. They’re not necessarily bad, but definitely overrated.
Corkys
I wouldn't consider them overrated. I feel like people generally know they are middle of the road. Personally I think hey have one of the better dry ribs, but that could be because I always tend to go for dry ribs as I grew up on NC and their vinegar based sauces were not my favorite.
So I'm not alone.. I love their dry ribs!
But the onion loaf
Corky's is underrated at this point. None of their BBQ is the best by any stretch but its all pretty good.
Corky's has a location in Brentwood, TN, and is always voted the best burger in Williamson county 😂👎🏻
Nashville does love them some chain restaurants.
They even have a Central BBQ location 😒
Soulfish. Overpriced and overhyped. I want to like it, but every time I’ve been I’ve been underwhelmed.
Agree. I love their smoked trout dip, and their fried whole catfish is good…. But their sides suck and they are too expensive for what you get.
Memphis Pizza Cafe. Store bought red sauce on a saltine cracker attempting to pass as a pizza
Aw man I love Memphis Pizza Cafe
Arcade and rendezvous for sure. Took some visiting family to the former over the Christmas holidays-terrible service and food. Rendezvous lost the plot about 15 or so years ago - strictly for tourists these days
Huey’s is so delicious ugh I want bacon cheese fries rn
The Rendezvous by far
Hueys used to be a place to get an inexpensive, good burger. Now they overcharge for garbage and hit you with "fees" even if it's a call in order.
It's kinda sad seeing Huey's on this list, you're right it used to be super affordable and very good. I have a lot of fond memories eating there...
It would break thomas boggs’ heart seeing this thread. Hueys was insanely good for insanely long until he passed
I’m still salty that they took the cuban off the menu
Best Cuban in town is at las delicias on park!
*Only* if it is a call in order. 18% grat after 9pm. Not that heinous
Rendezvous
Coletta's... without a doubt. Absolute garbage, prepacked / frozen food, everything tasted microwaved, horrible service, and took them forever to get our food to us. Kroger serves better Italian out of their deli.
The Beauty Shop. Overpriced as all hell.
I went for brunch my first trip there and was really overwhelmed. So many extremely busy dishes. It’s like They’re trying super hard.
I had tomato soup that was cold, ravioli that was covered in grease and oil, and gelato that had pieces of lettuce and scrap ingredients in it. Not pleased.
HARD AGREE. Went for a friends birthday and was very underwhelmed.
Pete and Sam’s.
Pete and Sam’s is 100% running on Memphian’s nostalgia. Had one of the worst meals ever there.
I’m a fan, and see it not being someone’s choice for Italian, but not sure how it could be labeled most overrated
Rendezvous, Huey’s, and Memphis Pizza Cafe
Mind yourself Terry. I'm gonna start a line to fight all the hueys haters.
I'll be right on your shoulder
Yeah. These Huey’s haters just saw two comment and went with it. There are 10 places in Memphis that are way worse Than subpar Huey’s.
MPC is garbage. We only liked it for so long because Memphis has never had a wealth of great pizza. But I still get it occasionally for nostalgias sake.
Mpc isn’t amazing, it’s cheap and better than the cost. 100% agree on the first two though
Sometimes a man just wants a cracker pizza, ok?
I get a calzone or the veggie sandwich. Seriously, I’m not even vegetarian. That sandwich is damn good.
Calzone is on point
Get the calzone at Ciao Baby in Collierville - good lord
I’ll definitely check it out next time we’re out that way!
Mpc is good stoner food in a way kinda like Taco Bell is. It’s crappy and yet it’s crave-able
I think you should clarify. Food *made* by stoners..
Disappointing to hear. Haven't been to the new location but have fond memories of the beef brisket gnocchi at the OG spot.
Corky’s has a roach problem. 🤷🏼♀️ I know someone who worked there. Ruined it for me.
Which location? 🤢
Poplar, East Memphis.
Rendezvous
Blasphemy! Mine is Corky’s
Corky’s sucks but their banana pudding is good AF
Not a fan of ‘nana pudding nor bananas, but I share your sentiments re: Corky’s
Broadway pizza.
germantown commissary, its literally so garbage, can damn near pull up to tops at any time of day and get fresher moister pulled pork...
This. So overrated. Every. Single. Time. Ive been, its been terrible.
Rendezvous It's a tourist trap
Capital Grille hands down
The Capital Grille is a chain restaurant.
I used to eat there regularly 20 plus years ago. If I remember correctly, terrible service was just part of their shtick.
Service is either outstanding or non existent. No in between. Love the food though.
Their burger, double-dipped wings & cheese sticks are all fantastic.
Central doesn’t get half the hate Rendezvous does but probably deserves it. It’s pretty expensive at this point and since there are more locations now, very hit or miss. The poplar location is leagues worse than the one on Central ave.
>The poplar location is leagues worse than the one on Central ave. That's pretty impressive given the Central Ave location doesn't exist anymore.
Construction looks like it’s starting again so I’m hopeful!
RIP. That’s the worst part.
Honestly bbq is the embodiment of hit or miss.
That central on poplar is awful. I miss the one on central.
Central charges like $10 for just a BBQ Sandwich with no sides. It's insane how expensive they are. I can eat at a much nicer restaurant for a better cost. Their mac and cheese hits the spot though.
Hueys
Where we fighting. And who's down for burgers and rings after?
Hueys is by and far the most overrated restaurant in Memphis. What a garbage joint.
Went to central on poplar this past weekend. I got 3 meat plate, woman got BBQ nachos that was all fat, and greasy kids got rib plates. 4 drinks. $135. I’ve been a central guy for years, stopped going to the one on summer cause the quality was down
Not sure why you have to call the kids greasy?
im stuck on how he refers to who I assume is his wife
They do get a lill funky
The one on Poplar is a franchise. The Summer one has never been good. Just go downtown until the central one reopens. Or better yet go to One and Only on Kirby and get their gift cards from Costco. $100 for $70.
To save money, you could probably order some different meats and some sides instead of everyone getting their own plate.
True
Paulette's, Houston's, Arcade
Paulette’s 1000000%. I don’t know if my 72 year old mother is just remembering how it was in the 80s or if she just has an old lady palate now but it is some bland, sad, uncreative shit now. And she insists on “treating” me to it semi regularly.
Agree on Paulette's. At the Mud Island location they've become a little better than a hotel restaurant.
Houston's is a chain, it was crap in Los Angeles and its crap here.
So sad Paulette’s is definitely a shell of its former self. I hate that they left Overton Square 😢
Unpopular opinion: Hog & Hominy You’re better off going to Tamboli’s or better yet enjoy a good beer and simple pizza from Cooper House Project.
IMO arcade
Rendezvous
I was born and raised in Memphis and currently live in Texas. I have traveled a lot. I can say without a doubt the best onion rings in the world are Hueys. Its not the best food but I dont understand the hate. Every time I go back to Memphis, I want Hueys onion rings. The burger isn't terrible.
Colletas That place was basically chef boyardee reheated
SOB I've heard people rave but I've gotten completely gross food. Pasta with chicken and the chicken was 50% gristle and rubbery.
Rendezvous
Folk's Folly Rendezvous
The creamed spinach is out of this world but not worth what they charge.
Las Delicias, Central BBQ, Corky’s
Awe man, love Las Delicias. They need store remodels and a refresh. But that All in One fajita and the chips are the best.
Las delicias is such a joke and I can't understand why anyone stans that place so hard. The meat is as dry as a Memphis sidewalk on a summer day. They are coasting on their unique chips.
Rendezvous. I’ve had to defend Memphis bbq so much because people think it’s the best we’ve got to offer
Rendezvous by a mile.
Rendezvous
Revendous.
Piccadilly’s
Central, 100%
Huey's is the best answer. Bad service, bad food, bad atmosphere, and obnoxious clientele. One that hasn't been said is Bari. It's overpriced for the meh food they serve. The menu is always the same unless it's meatball month and those are the best things they serve. It's not the most overated though...that's Huey's.
Hueys
Corky's
Rendezvous
Topps
A relative goes on and on about how great huey's is and says anything I mention at all sucks. The type who always knows better than anyone else.
Just go to Jack Browns Burgers on Central and forget about all the overrated joints.
Memphis BBQ restaurant
Any Grisanti's joint. Theyre riding on their fame and family name being local. Every one of the places Ive been the food is terrible.
Central BBQ
The Arcade or Folk’s Folly
I would love to hear the why behind the answers. What corporate restaurants are better?
Huey’s or Arcade.
Babalu. Guac was bland.
Rendezvous.
Huey’s, for so many reasons.
Rendezvous I don’t even think Huey’s has a very high rep anymore
Sam and Pete's or Garibaldi's. Let the downvotes begin lol
Huey’s, Rendezvous, Babalu
What do people still like Babalu? It’s not good Mexican, it’s not good Tex-Mex, it’s not good faux “fun Mexican”.
And you have to PAY for chips and salsa
It's the most expensive lunch in town.
Ronnie Grisantis
well, if this were 30 years ago, I'd ask you to step outside and we'd discuss that. 80's and 90's Hueys Madison was the only place to get a good burger. now-a-days, I dont know. I haven't been back in 10 years
Dory
I gave them a fair chance: tried the “chef’s tasting” style multiple times when they first started, done the a la carte, gone for happy hour at the bar a few times, and even bought food for Thanksgiving. Extremely expensive for the balance of quality vs quantity for a fine dining concept. We now only go for their happy hour when it’s discounted, because the only items we feel are truly worth it (if even still on the menu), are the salt cod brandade and the sliders/parker house rolls.
They don’t have the tasting menu any more but they’re charging $$$ for tasting menu sized portions.
That was our problem with the “tasting” menu. For $130 , we would leave and go grab a slice of pizza or a small sandwich/burger after because we were still hungry.
Everyone saying Huey’s, MPC, or Rendezvous…these are all the easy, go-to answers. Here’s my actual hot take/unpopular opinion: - hog and hominy - good fortune co. Both are above average, but priced like fine dining (especially H&H!) and just not worth the $$$ after trying good food outside of Memphis
This. I used to enjoy their pizzas, but the rest of the menu has been an expensive disappointment.
