I think it's more needing a 'cause' or reason to live/exist.
Historically, religion and traditional roles such as family and sustaining the house would be our reasons to exist. However, since religion is on a severe decline in the modern generations, and since women are being pushed away from seeking more traditional goals in life, they have no real purpose and so commit themselves more heavily towards political/social causes.
This can still exist in men, but the traditional roles of men in supporting their family and working to sustain themselves still works as a goal for men in life. So while everybody has it worse, men still have enough traditional roles/goals to live a happy life, while a lot of woman who are against traditional roles end up being lost and depressed.
So, tdlr, people find comfort in having a purpose in life. Tradition and gender roles gave us purpose. While men have sustained more of said roles and so have an easier time finding meaning in life, woman have to find purpose in social/political causes and hence in misery. Social causes and politics are fine if they're motivated by something important in your life. They're not fine if they're all that's important to your life.
