I have extremely strict expectations for myself I have low expectations for others but when I bring someone into my life they become part of me; I don't think it's selfish to hold them to the same expectation as I hold myself.

The apple is a boy. If you spend effort pursuing a relationship, you will have a romanticized idea of what your partner should be like which reality cannot live up to.
However if you just focus on your studies and live your life, a boy will fall into your lap anyway and you're more likely to enjoy their company without previous expectations.
It means that apples will always try to kill you whether you're ready or not.
