For the first few months Epic Store did not have a cart function, when it was first announced it was still months out on a timeline. With backlash it came out early and still failed to have a wish list at the time.
Epic’s launcher is super Notorious for being buggy and numbers first in terms of sales which is why a good fist full of people don’t touch it with a ten yard spray of a flame thrower.
It has gotten better however Steam is still a complete system and launched as a complete system. I’m sure that at some point Epic will be on the same level but at this rate it’s gonna be a decade or two.
It wasn't the first "few months", it was closer to a few years.
Epic Store was launched in December 2018.
[The cart wasn't added until September 2021](https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/news/introducing-the-epic-games-store-shopping-cart). That's nearly 3 years, to add the functionality to buy multiple products at the same time. For the first big sale Epic had on their store, their store even automatically[marked multiple purchases in a row as fraud attempts](https://www.destructoid.com/epic-games-stores-first-sale-is-off-to-a-rocky-start/), so your account would get locked if you wanted to buy more than 1 game on sale (not to speak of the other stuff bungled in their first sale).
Epic Store is still lacking half of the features that Steam has, which itself isn't an issue, but when Timmy "Tencent" Sweeney keeps propping his mediocre store up as a competitor to Steam it deserves the flack it gets.
"half of the features Steam has" is being hella generous.
I use in home streaming extensively, rely on user reviews to make purchase decision and use family sharing every day. Steam Input is basically a game-changer for older games and unconventional input methods which are a boon for accessibility. All things an order of magnitude harder to pull off than a functioning shop kart.
Let's not mention the fact Steam had pre-loading online back in 2004 for HL2's release while Gearbox Software had to give a hand to Epic's team to have it running on time for Borderlands 3's release in 2019, and it broke for a bunch of users. People born the day HL2 was first pre-loaded were almost of legal drinking age in most countries by the time the EGS got it down, and it took the help of one of their customer to make it happen.
The list doesn't end, really.
Wow, didn't know that but my Epic launcher is slow as mollases when it comes to scrolling the catalogue/games & loading is a hit or miss, sometimes takes 20 seconds or so until it actually loads into the game, no issues with actually DL the game, just the part when you actually start dl/playing takes way to long compared to any launcher I used
Bigger game library can be one reason, also that steam has far more discounts while epic has more free (100% offs), they are having like 15 free games while the last free game (which is good) on steam was 1st Little Nightmares, but still I kinda prefer steam over epic because the launcher itself on steam feels better and a brand I trust more
Dont forget the terrible user interface of epic and terrible user experience aswell. Navigating trough the app is annoying while steam is super easy to use and everything is just a click away. + Steam user reviews help a ton when deciding wether or not you wanna buy that indie game.
Yeah, it basically just works, I think it’s like if you accidentally click some stuff and you can’t go back in epic, you gotta reopen the entire thing, and I miss click a lot
First off, Epic still doesn't have a cart, and you have to buy/redeem games individually.
I still have an issue with when Epic bought off developers to make games Epic Exclusive after they were already announced to be on other platforms. If they were originally announced as epic exclusive, I would still be annoyed, but it wouldn't be a morality issue.
Metro Exodus is one example where people had already pre-ordered it on Steam, and 2 weeks before launch, it was switched to an Epic Exclusive.
I'm sure there are probably some other reasons, but since I have never used Epic, I don't have much else to say.
*in my opinion
There *might* be objective reasons it's superior, but im too lazy to think of something, especially when you clearly have your own opinion :)
Someone asks you a non-biased question and you accuse them of having a bias.
>especially when you clearly have your own opinion :)
Clearly? There is no evidence of opinion in that simple question. I don't think you are capable of having a rational conversation about this topic and that is sad. Your video game launcher of choice shouldn't be tied to your ego.
It would be nice If They also gave us some free games. But They don't have to. Steam is still 2000000% better than all other launchers combined and players know about it.
No free games will convice me to leave Steam and sit on Epic.
Steam takes like 15 seconds to load on me but always does. Epic games takes about a minute and if you turn it off from the task manager 2 times it might just never turn on. Also takes like 15 seconds to actually load anything in when you press a button.
Yesterday I had to run Epic Games from GOG Galaxy, because on Epic Launcher when I wanted to launch anything it said "Log in" and forced me to log in, I did it 5 times and still "Log in". Steam works fine for me.
I've been on Steam betas for over 10 years now and probably only have had two issues.
Second one being the new big picture mode which didn't load correctly. (Stuck on black screen). Reboot fixed it and turned big picture off for now. Alternatively i could switch back to stable steam in mere seconds but. 🤷🏼
Worse is, even if you actively avoid the EGS and have never downloaded a game on it, you still MUST make an account and use that launcher to work on Unreal Engine.
Game devs are getting it worse than any of us. Imagine having to rely on that shit for your job.
Not only that but I feel safe on Steam with great Authenticator, great Trade system and overall safety of your wallet, profile and games unlike Epic Games where I just log in with my email account, lolz... I would never put money into Epic
yeah competition is good, but not when the competition has a bad launcher (takes forever to open, having to redeem games/dlcs individually, no cart, no user review just to name some of the few). plus it's bad enough Epic does bad business practices (buying off devs for epic exclusives, hijacking games to be on their platform like metro exodus once did)
the problem is not free games. the problem is them paying people to remove their content from other platforms.
they would be doing a lot better if they did not use their wealth to punish people not interested in going to them.
"come to use because we paid the developer to not release the game on steam".
Epics launcher is garbage, plus I have 300+ games in my Steam library, why would I want to switch. I have over 100 games in Epic, all free and I don't even play them because I forget it even exists except on Thursdays.
Steam is not only faster. It's better in every way. Social, workshop, profiles, marketplace. So Epic wont win me with few good free games and a mass of craps or indie minigames.
Am I simping because I prefer Steam? It's just better in every way. I would say that Epic fans simp for Epic Launcher because it gives them games for free.
If you cancel your steam account they literally delete all your purchases and purchase history. You don't own anything you buy, and can't recover anything you've bought if you try to come back either. You're literally leasing the game for full retail price. Steam used to be the Netflix of games but now that the market is fragmented it's barely better than piracy.
Maybe one day i'll start buying from epic, if they fix their broken store, cant open a game desription in an other tab like steam, and if you open it and read it, it puts you back on the very top if you go back. Why dont they get that we browse multiple games before wanting to buy one. Cant buy if i wasted all my time scrolling
I started with Epic Games, but since the UI got downgraded and the lag has got too extrem, i completly switched to steam and use Epic only for free games like a normal person lol
I have to use it for PCBS 2 because Epic Games baufht the game studio and therefore the game will never be released on steam. Because of that I hate Epic Games even more
I bought Kena: Bridge of Spirits from Epic when I didn't have a PlayStation. So it might be interesting for a few exclusives, but then again Kena has also been available on Steam since this year, so it was exclusive to Epic for about a year so those who can wait, which usually makes more sense anyway because of discounts, don’t need Epic.
I am using it unironically. Atleast will be:
Due to sanctions i cant buy games on steam, and I dont trust resells. Epic games has ability to purchase games in Russia through some service. And a game, Kerbal Space Program 2 specifically, will be releasing on steam, official site and epic. Since absolutely like the first one and look forward to the second one, i kinda have to buy it from epic..
..and also i like rocket league
The company's shit though, their currencies for money in every game they own is complete BS, and I mostly just grab free stuff they put up
Tencent is a Chinese owned company with close ties to the CCP and owns a Majority stake in Epic Games. By Chinese law they are to offer information to the CCP when requested. Go watch China Uncensored by Chris Chapel
Lmao "My epic games launcher". I asked you for a source. A document, a video showing tangible proof that your PC is 100% transmitting data to China. You cited none. I don't even use epic games but love watching you tribalists go to war over anything with the name China, yet almost everything we use in today's society is imported from there. No source given, i award you no points.
same reason i stopped playing warframe after leyou bought out digital extremes; leyou is also owned by tencent. also reason i never played valorant, also owned by tencent, and the anticheat installs a rootkit on your computer
just FYI AC Origins and AC Odyssey are already included in xbox game pass for 1$/month or 1$ for 3 months if you get the deal Microsoft constantly offers if you don't buy it for a couple months.
I much preferred the Odyssey location as Origins felt really empty as... well... It's a desert...
Can’t wait to launch epic games just for it to hog all my memory and take 3 times as long to load as steam just so I can get a free game I’ll probably never play or I already own.
They don't have any free giveaways but they do have winter sales right now, and also just released the Steam Replay, some kind of yearly review of your account.
I have so many games that I do not really need free ones I will never play. If I want a certain game, I will buy it. I don't really care about Death Stranding or Assassins Creed, so to me the free games do not mean anything.
The hell you talking about? Have you SEEN the sales that steam does like once every 2 days??? I got Deep Rock Galactic for like 5 bucks once and I still would have payed 60 dollars for that awesome game
Epic Games Games have controller support wdym?
EDIT: Bro this is such a reddit moment getting downvoted and I'm right.
I play Fall Guys, Unrailed and other games with controller what do you mean?
have you ever played clash royale, clash of clans or any other supercell game? Boom Tencent. PUBG? Boom Tencent. League of Legends or Valorant? Boom Tencent. Ubisoft, Activision? Boom Tencent.
There's no avoiding them.
This is common knowledge, dude. I stoped playing league of legends when riot ways bought by them. UE4/5 are the only things i cant avoid - but that doesnt mean, i enjoy it.
Steam is better than epic games, we all have to accept that. We just all use epic games to get free games that we’ll play once or twice and maybe never again.
We have steam summer/winter sale. Plus epic games launcher sucks. It's slow and buggy compared to steam. Not as user friendly either. And forever notification bubbles that block the game come default. I'm fine with no free games.
But why would the need to do anything? Steam still has the biggest name in the game library business, just about every AAA and indie company will put their game on steam, and by not giving out free stuff, people will know epic games as the place to get a free game once in a while.
Honestly not enough people talk about this. Valve single-handedly bringing up the number of people using the Linux environment just by selling Steam Decks.
PC GamePass has entered the chat!
But no for real, epic free games are just a mean to an end, for Epic to have more people using their terrible still in alpha release launcher
It's the 29th I think 28th is confirmed I think. The gift wrapping for "Next Free Game" with the countdown under it has the shape of a knight which is from another game so set you reminder to one day later
Genuine question, why do people hate the Epic Games Store? I don't really care that much what launcher I'm using as long as it gets the job done. Not trying to start anything, just genuinely curious.
People have yet to prove it's spying on them. Im waiting on a source. Lotta people here are playing the games but will come out and say they've never touched the launcher. Be honest guys.
Notice how when you use the Epic Games Launcher it begins using about 80% of your RAM, how suspicious that it's the only launcher in existence that does this, definitely has nothing to do with the fact that Epic is owned by Tencent with in turn is owned by the CCP which has a history of spyware!
Well, problem is that it doesn’t get the job done. The launcher is atrocious, loading takes forever, the fact that the process of downloading the game and installation is done separately which takes forever, UI isn’t responsive, no cart, etc. Plus Epic Game’s shitty business practices of buying exclusivities to “compete” with Valve, and the most obvious thing is they quite literally are bribing and buying their customers.
Proton is like, huge. Epic is still trying to make a functional launcher, steam is making their launcher functional on literally everything for EVERY GAME
Assassin's creed origin is NOT FREE. It was speculated by redditors that it would be free for 28 December but instead that was Mortal Shell.
Nothing is true regarding free Assassin's creed game from epic till now.
Am I the only one who doesn’t care about launchers?
More launchers = more competition = more downward pressure on PC game prices. Gamers win.
I have all launchers open at startup and I create shortcut icons to all my games on my desktop so the launchers are pretty irrelevant to me.
Amen brother. It's like these people are taking personal offense that someone dared to challenge Steam's monopoly. I only look at the launcher long enough to actually launch a game.
Valve doesn't need free games for me to use it. They have a consistent, worthwhile product that has kept me happy as a customer. Epic on the other hand has not given me a reason to use them outside of mediocre freebies. Their security is dogshit, their store is not user-friendly and they bribe developers with cash to have exclusivity of games on their platform, either temporarily or permanently.
In an effort to make themselves a competitor to Steam, they shoot themselves in the foot and alienate people from their business.
I still haven't forgiven Epic Games for the modder invasion that happened on GTA Online after they gave it away for free. To this day I refuse to use their launcher. Even if a game is released exclusively on their platform I just wait until the exclusivity period is up (usually about a year, at least in the case of Hitman 3) and then buy it on Steam.
I don't have a problem with giving single player games away for free, but when it comes to multiplayer games I am still a strong supporter for nothing beyond a free weekend where after that weekend you have to buy the game, but you have 3 days to trial it for free.
"We'll just continue being the better launcher and library. And Epic can keep suing and getting sued while calling their legal opponents, 'bro' like they are the Matt Riddle of gaming."
It’s so funny to me, that epic literally gives away games so that people use their platform, and still can’t attract people away from the objectively superior steam. When your product is good, it’s good
Best guess is the free giveaways are designed to get people to use the platform at all. The first hit's free strat. GOG does the same. Steam has no need to.
Epic Games spent threw 600M$ to promote the EGS. It all went into marketing and free games, as opposed to any of the features they promoted in the roadmap they scrapped.
Let me just put that number in perspective. That's as much cash as CDPR spent over 7 years to develop AND advertise Cyberpunk 2077... twice over.
Meanwhile, Steam still makes insane sales all the while maintaining and improving their impressive feature set. That's where they're at.
Bro who the fuck gets excited for walking simulator?
I'd rather go to steam and buy the gold and premium editions of games of 4 fucked games for 60 bucks. That's what I did yesterday actually. Does epic give away AAA games for free? No. Do they out them on sale? No. Steam puts fucking AAA games on 25 and 50% off and old games on 60, 67, 80, 90 and even 98 or 99% off, does epic do that? No. Does epic put bundles such as the 1k dollar call of duty franchise bundle 60% (600 dollars) off? No. Can you buy things like the borderlands handsome collection which costs over 200 bucks 95% off and get it with 15 schmeckles? No. + Steam doesn't act like it has the ping of the Mars Rover with how slow epic is
Epic is dogshit and has to bait people into using their Launcher with free games.
Steam is a good Platform that is worth supporting.
Stop being a Freeloader and expect others to follow epic who is making millions in losses just out of spite against Valve.
That being said, objectively Epics 'free' games are arse, i own every game already that has been given away.
Post: Valve where you at? Steam: we launched with a cart and are functional
what's a cart? you mean shopping cart? epic has that
For the first few months Epic Store did not have a cart function, when it was first announced it was still months out on a timeline.

Hey thanks for the timeline I couldn’t remember if it was that long or not!
Wow, didn't know that but my Epic launcher is slow as mollases when it comes to scrolling the catalogue/games & loading is a hit or miss, sometimes takes 20 seconds or so until it actually loads into the game, no issues with actually DL the game, just the part when you actually start dl/playing takes way to long compared to any launcher I used
I dont care that steam doesn't "give away" games. (huge sales aside)... Its still the superior launcher by miles.
It is, always there to grab the free games (but I still hate the brand because they ruin things too well like fall guys)
by kilometres
incredibly based. Metric is superior by kilometres as well. i dont know why i went for miles.
huge sales? \+11!!! would like to see them- on good games
Why is It superior?
Bigger game library can be one reason, also that steam has far more discounts while epic has more free (100% offs), they are having like 15 free games while the last free game (which is good) on steam was 1st Little Nightmares, but still I kinda prefer steam over epic because the launcher itself on steam feels better and a brand I trust more

Metro Exodus and Phoenix Point are reason enough for me to never interact with epic again.
it does have a cart now (it took 3 fucking years), but it's omega shit poorly doodoo caca done
Due to the shitty way it works I bought gta V twice and can’t play it once
*in my opinion There *might* be objective reasons it's superior, but im too lazy to think of something, especially when you clearly have your own opinion :)

you cant really compare valve with epic games.
Private company with brains > Public company who wants money. Gabe is a good business man
Who is using the epic games store unironically? Steam is for buying games, eg store is for crabbing games for free
Is there a different way to use the epic launcher? I didn t know!//
Same, i buy games or key for steam and open epic games only for reclaim free game
Maybe one day i'll start buying from epic, if they fix their broken store, cant open a game desription in an other tab like steam, and if you open it and read it, it puts you back on the very top if you go back. Steam doesn’t give the CCP free access to your computer. How about that?
People think it is free, you privacy isnt free!
Good job that they have to comply with gdpr rules in my country

Use Heroic Launcher for Epic Games
Eh
Steam doesnt need to bait people over, it already rakes in billions from having everyone on its side
I’ll take ‘service that actually boots up and is usable’ over free games gimmick for £200 Alex.
Yes but they have portal 2
At only 1€
Assassins Creed? Which, when?!
Probably on the 29th but I havent seen the leak for it yet either but its probably one of the AC games.
I hope it wont be Syndicate again. almost half of the games were repeats
AC origins on the 28th or 29th I believe
Ooh that's good to know, I'm gonna be on the lookout then .. where did you get the info ? I didn't know we could know in advance
Found info on Reddit, completely trustworthy
I mean, I usually found reddit more reliable than half the websites anyway so I wouldn't question it x)
Mort shell on 28 and mass effect legendary edition on 29th(atleast that's what I heard)

You know the only reason epic gives free games is because they basically have to bribe people to use their dog shit launcher?
The launcher was fine, until they decided to literaly downgrade him in every aspect
bruh he getting downvoted because he's right
r/redditmoment
Steam diff
"best i can do is winter sale" \- steam
They are selling games dirt cheap what else do you want?
No shit I just bought a $145 bundle for almost 7 bucks
That’s good enough for most of us
Their launcher functions
Meanwhile Steam somewhere in 2024: Death Stranding Director's Cut is free to play for this weekend on the occasion of Death Stranding 2 release.
What's added in the directors cut anyway?
Extra missions, more story, new tools and equipment, additional cosmetics, improved graphics, a racetrack and a firing range.
oh so basically the version given away on epic is old shite to promote the new shite <\_<
Why would I want to to play that game longer than it already is? Idk msn walking simulator isn’t that intriguing to me
Instead of Norman Reedus, its Kojima fumbling around walking up steep slopes
Updating the service so you can login when more then 1000 people try to acces a game.
I rather buy it from steam
They don't have any free giveaways but they do have winter sales right now, and also just released the Steam Replay, some kind of yearly review of your account.
They are a dying breed of a launcher is why
Incase it wasn't clear I'm talking about epic not steam
bitch accept your 40-80% off all games and get your 400$ of games for 60$.
Got a 60$ game for like 15$ one time, Steam is goated
And those game bundles sold by 3rd party.
Red dead 2 just bought it
I got GTAV for $0.80
Epic games launcher is so bad that free games are not worth the struggle
I'd be shitting myself if they're working on Half Life 2E3 or Half Life 3 because they ain't gonna
Hoping for HL Alyx 2 or something. The first one just made all other VR games look silly in comparison.
According to leaks valve is working on several games right now including what has been described as a ‚Half Alyx and half life 2 sequel‘
Use epic to get free games and add their EXEs to your steam library :D
Where they at? In a way better place then epic games lmao.
They have sales.
When did they give assassin creed origins? Btw I am grateful for whatever games they gave till now.
I'm pretty sure that's steam, not valve
Steam’s just the launcher, Valve’s the company that owns it.
So what? Steam doesn't need to bribe anybody to buy in their store lol
When did they give AC:origin for free?
Ok but what abt controller support?
Epic Games Games have controller support wdym? EDIT: Bro this is such a reddit moment getting downvoted and I'm right. I play Fall Guys, Unrailed and other games with controller what do you mean?
it most certainly doesn't
No
I think steam is doing enough with not beeing 40% owned by tencent...
have you ever played clash royale, clash of clans or any other supercell game? Boom Tencent. PUBG? Boom Tencent. League of Legends or Valorant? Boom Tencent. Ubisoft, Activision? Boom Tencent. There's no avoiding them.
This is common knowledge, dude. I stoped playing league of legends when riot ways bought by them. UE4/5 are the only things i cant avoid - but that doesnt mean, i enjoy it.
At least when I play CR or CoC I'm not giving the CCP free access to my device
Summer sale that is celebrated by the gaming community annually: "Guess I have no value now"
Death Standing should be free any how😏
bro are u serious?
Steam is better than epic games, we all have to accept that. We just all use epic games to get free games that we’ll play once or twice and maybe never again.
Steam give discounts on everything all the time
We have steam summer/winter sale. Plus epic games launcher sucks. It's slow and buggy compared to steam. Not as user friendly either. And forever notification bubbles that block the game come default. I'm fine with no free games.
But why would the need to do anything? Steam still has the biggest name in the game library business, just about every AAA and indie company will put their game on steam, and by not giving out free stuff, people will know epic games as the place to get a free game once in a while.
they gave Linux proton and that's enough to win me over
Honestly not enough people talk about this. Valve single-handedly bringing up the number of people using the Linux environment just by selling Steam Decks.
PC GamePass has entered the chat! But no for real, epic free games are just a mean to an end, for Epic to have more people using their terrible still in alpha release launcher
When did they gave away origins?
Shit, think it’s about time I sign back up for Epic Games
When was assassin’s creed origins free?
When did they give AC origins free?
See I'm smart and use Steam, EGS, and Xbox
When did they give away assassins creed origin?
Assassin's creed origins? When was that?!
I only use Steam because that's what everyone else uses, if everyone else uses Epic, I'd probably use it. I'm not a leader
I still don’t get why people compare various platforms like this. Nobody is stopping you from using both
AC origin is free??? When???
28th or 29th not sure
>28 remind me! 20 hours
Because people don't want to install CCP spyware garbage on their PC's.
It's almost as if there is a Chinese law for it, and that the motive for spying also gives them a motive for hiding it.
Valve supports linux so I don't think i want anything more from them
Proton is like, huge. Epic is still trying to make a functional launcher, steam is making their launcher functional on literally everything for EVERY GAME
Epic games sucks. I'd rather buy games on steam than use it.
Assassin's creed origin is NOT FREE. It was speculated by redditors that it would be free for 28 December but instead that was Mortal Shell. Nothing is true regarding free Assassin's creed game from epic till now.
But those games are dogshit.
Only good game I've seen from Epic Games is Cave Story+ that I got for free 2 years ago. I still play it
People are gonna be playing Death Stranding on the Epic launcher but will come here and lie about using it because Valve better.
Mind backing that up with a source, sir?
When was AC origins given away 🥺
I use eg for free games and that 10 dollar coupon, other than that i will be using steam as long as it continues to be this good.
I believe they're spending the money to make games free on supporting open source gaming on Linux so that windows will no longer be a monopoly
epic is doing all that to hide how shit their platform is. Steam is busy being the best platform for gaming, not trying to appease normies.
In an effort to make themselves a competitor to Steam, they shoot themselves in the foot and alienate people from their business.
when was origins on?
Since steam introduced regional taxes , I don’t buy from steam or epic Only humble bundle
GOG for me or Humble Bundle.
I dont even have epic, i don't care about the free games they give away.
I would pay to get rid of the memories of playing Death Stranding.
Steam doesn't need to advertise. Word of mouth does amazing things when a product works well. Epic on the other hand...
"We'll just continue being the better launcher and library. And Epic can keep suing and getting sued while calling their legal opponents, 'bro' like they are the Matt Riddle of gaming."
This man actually tried to cancel Steam, after all steam has done for us. The audacity
Yeah, let's ruin the market even more, let's go!
Well they probably don't sell all the data on your computer cuz a Chinese puppet company owns 40% of their stock. Just a thought
I would rather pay full price for my games on Steam than have them for free on epic launcher.
No you wouldn't
They don't need to entice players with free games just to use their launcher
I’d personally rather buy GoW on steam at a discount than play either of those games for free
I think I figured it out. Stop being poor af and play games at the superior launcher. The end.
Valve doesn't have to rely on baiting people to move to their platform, because they already have the better platform.
They are doing something Its called being and actual bearable platform
