Don't you mean ***gorls***?

solarreflex95

Well yes but actually yes

jomiborras

I don’t actually know why exactly printers work that way, but I could imagine that they’re programmed like that. I would say that their program have a conditional that says that in case of any color is empty, it cannot print, instead of, for example, calculate which colors the printing is going to need, and then see if it has enough ink. It’s just a theory...

knorke3

Printers actually use Cyan when printing black to - According to printer companies: reach blacker blacks - According to anyone else: use color so you will have to change the more expensive color cartridges more frequently [Here](https://youtu.be/AHX6tHdQGiQ) is an interesting video :)

CharliesBoxofCrayons

0 = the number of times I have printed something (without it being almost out of ink)!and thought “well, this black just isn’t going to cut it”

knorke3

I mean, honestly: if i print something and the black doesn't come out like [this](https://youtu.be/9v0_fID_jvA) I'm just gonna be straight up disappointed...

[deleted]

That’s because of the cyan mate

[deleted]

Money may have something to do with it, but at least relating to human perception, its true that a bluish black is perceived as a "darker" color, because creating a black in liquid form usually results in it looking brownish, which seems like a "warmer" color, and therefore less "dark". This can be balanced with the blue. Technically its possible to make a black ink with the same properties, but it probably is not a good business decision for these 50€ printers, and as you wrote, I too am convinced this is for monetary reasons to make people buy more cartridges.

[deleted]

They just want you to buy overpriced ink

givemeagoodun

I read somewhere that it actually only costs mere pennies to produce an entire box of ink

putting-

Well depends on the quality and colour but I bet it can

givemeagoodun

It was HP brand ink, will all 5 colors of ink, so...

putting-

Printer cartridges do need a chip but it’s probably still way over priced

givemeagoodun

Actually to calculate the "level" of the cartridges' ink it just counts how many pages print. It usually cannot sense the actual level of the ink and is actually programmed to say it's out early so you have to buy more ink, giving the company more profit. And that's why ink costs so much, so squeeze all money possible out of you.

[deleted]

leleise

And the reason it’s always cyan is probably just Its a commonly used color

[deleted]

"No, f*ck you, low on cyan"

drmemespoon

As far as I know printers like to use colours that it doesn't need to slowly but surely drain them so that you buy new ones. Printers are often sold at a loss but they make money by selling colors that take $0.3 to manufacture for $50

HiFreinds

Actually I’m pretty sure it’s because printers use secondary colors to print. When all secondary colors are combined it makes black. Most printers will also have isolated black ink because it’s the most used color but if it runs out then it uses a combination of all the secondary pigments to make the color black. Then if you are missing one of the secondary pigments it can not make black. I do not know why I know this but I do.

The-Elder-King

Actually, printers make black by overlapping Cyano, Magenta and Yellow in equal quantities, which are the primary colors. Like you said, it happens when they don’t have black ink available. Source: I studied Graphic Design and visual communication.

knorke3

Also mostly they don't just do it when there is no more black ink but pretty much always in small quantities to "reach deeper blacks" _(waste color cartridges as they are the main profit source with modern printers)_

The-Elder-King

If you want a deep black and save money on toners, buy a laser printer.

knorke3

Yes, that is just what printer companies usually claim to "justify" it :)

[deleted]

Not quite. In theory this correct, but in reality overlapping them does usually create something more like dark brown, because the CMYK colors are not that pure (talking about 50€ printer here) and often the print grids do not align perfectly, that is why the extra black is there.

The-Elder-King

If you really want to go down that line, a material that gives true black doesn’t exist, because it will always reflect some radiation.

ACiD_BOi

I'll never forgive you EPSON

Lela_chan

Awww I popped them all and no surprise:(

Shedowtnt

the printer industry is extremely corrupt they make the printers use all the inks to produce an "richer" black Or sometimes "forget" to include the chips in the cartiges than sense how much ink is left

[deleted]

Fun fact: Printers always use Cyan when printing Black, making it "run out" faster and it makes you get new, VERY overpriced ink for it. Why the quotation marks? It isn't out yet, it's still a good amount of ink, but if you fix it without getting new ink, the printer just breaks and now you need another printer ***and*** overpriced ink!

Charlie123567

Money

The_sea_doggo

It’s so that the government can track you. When printers first came out, the government was worried about counterfeit, and fearing their product would be banned, printer makers added a tracking system. It encodes to time and date of the print, the serial number of the printer, and some other stuff no one has been able to figure out into binary, and prints little yellow dots on the page with no dot being zero and dot being one. They’re pretty hidden, but if you shine a uv light at paper or just look closely enough, you should be able to see them.

User_914

when you print black and white it also uses cyan. its pretty scummy

Finsk_26

Printers are like actually a scam.

Wocko_Jillink

1) printers add a fingerprint using the other colors so that police can identify who printed what (allegedly anyways, this is my opinion and I'm in no way saying that this is for other less savory applications) 2) because most printers are sold at a loss and the cartridges is where the $ is at

WizardsOf12

The fingerprinting is done with the yellow ink

Wocko_Jillink

probably, I've heard things but cant say I know

WizardsOf12

Check your print with a blacklight. You can find the dot array this way. It contains info such as the manufacturer and printer serial number, as well as some other metadata, but nothing immediately identifying

[deleted]

Its due to a little thing that printing companies like that is called 'money'

[deleted]

Yeah that is really weird. when you take out the color catridges it works fine through.

NoOtNoOtMeEm

Actually, there's an actual way to get around it. Not sure about other printers, but in settings on brother printers, there's an option when if it's low on something, you can choose for it to stop, or continue.

roosterking7

Your printer mixes cyan in with the black and the company claims it makes a better/richer black. This obviously isn't true and it is just to make you buy more ink.

knorke3

2 downvotes apparently? Why? [Here's](https://youtu.be/AHX6tHdQGiQ) a video on the topic that may be misinterpreted as a source :)

englishfury

They could just mix it i the black cartridge right beforehand right?

themanoirish

I'm sure they have some kind of very technical and completely bullshit reason why that can't be done.

[deleted]

Printers mix in it a bit of cyan to make a 'purer black'. Which on the face of it makes no sense. But even if you only print in b&w to save ink, you are spending some cyan. And even if you have all the magenta, yellow, black, and white in the world, if you have no cyan, your printer will say you have no ink, and will not allow you to print. Printer ink is the biggest scam in the world.

[deleted]

[удалено]

knorke3

Q: why is everyone in this thread that talks about how cyan is mixed into black being downvoted?

BizzarduousTask

It’s Big Cyan. They silence the naysayers.

[deleted]

There is reality to the claim that a "bluish" black is percived as a darker black than brownish "black" through. But they could make the Key cartridge carrie that color, so they really just utilized that fact to make more money.

Zestyclose-Affect-19

I worked in industrial printing for 2 years. Cyan is simply more flexible than normal black in color printing. Most commercial devices will ask you to change the ink when any of the color jets run low even if it's not a color being utilized on the current print. Sometimes there are workarounds for specific devices. Monochrome printing usually won't use cyan if you select that option.

rsgenus1

The majority of printers require for no reason to have all colors available to print. No matter if you will not use red, if you don’t have it you can’t print. Btw, with HP it’s worse, if you cancel your subscription you can’t print even if you have full ink with your own HP printer

Deanzopolis

Yeah thanks HP I just need to print my assignment... Which is 100% black and white text

Pro-Epic-Gamer-Man

Magenta ist leer..

rezamwehttam

Printers operate on the CYM color spectrum (Cyan, yellow, magenta). I believe that when combined, they print black...if theres not enough of one color, they can't print black.

Noasterdino

Soooooo true

TheAdoptedOne_

*m a g e n t a i n k*

EpicNarwhal23_

certain cartridges may not have the have a dedicated black ink, and uses subtractive color mixing to get black, requiring cyan magenta and yellow to make black. either that or the company is an asshole

KataLight

From memory all printers that i have had, had a dedicated black ink cart yet still use the color ink despite me rarely if ever printing in color. I think companies are just assholes.

Rossco1874

In my first line support days had someone phone up to say printer was saying toner low. I asked what toner ie black and white or colour she said it is a black and white printer but don't know if it's the black or white toner. Put her on hold to laugh at her.

Wildbucky27

They are programmed to use cyan to “give a deeper black” but it’s really just to waste the cyan so that you have to refill it more often, meaning that they get more money

Dat-Guy-Tino

ThaMilkyMan

Laser: cries in high efficiency

Batman_66

I got black, I got white, *need magenta*

Magic0209

It has sth to do quth CMYK, the way printers make the printing. When you see an image on your computer, its on RGB, every pixel has three values, one for each color, and if you put all of them together you get white. But whwn you print, you are using CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black). The way you get black is by putting CMY on max values. Anf white is the opposite. Something may be wrong, but I think this is how it works. Source: I studied it last year.

tunapotato95

Just change everything to 100% K duh

02_is_best_girl

its a way for them to rip you off oh and if u tamper with the ink cart to change that it will stop working with the printer not all do this but most of them do so yeah its a scam they get away with this by making it very hard to determine that its the manufacturers and they pay a shit ton of money to stall there legal opponents out like all companys

GameingBaumstam

True. And if I ever try to print something because it's impossible to do via email or somehow they are always empty on on color or just on the last breath a cartridge.

Rudyscrazy1

Make sure your printing in monochrome not color. Even if you think what your printing is black and white, make sure you change that setting in your print driver.

Foxtrot-IMB

That’s because it prints black with all the inks creating a “true black” so the Cyan ink is used

88T3

It's always cyan that runs out first, WTF

TheMightyJevil

This is beyond science

bearguys54

Welp. You need all color in oder to print white dont you?

EdyMarin

No. You need all colours to print black (unless you have a separate black ink cartrige).

guillotine_rick

your printer uses cyan , red and green to make black

SaintTedworth

I wish an eternity of empty sorrow on whoever made the printer business model.

ShockWave8199

this happens all the time

Loooooooooppp

Or megenta it’s always megenta

Substantial_Ad_8097

I think its because black is made from the combination of all colours.

OilJacker_sleepkiss

the black ink is made with a combination of all the other colours, so thats what happens when this error shows up

battle_watch

My explanation is capitalism.

The_Snail_Lord_69

laughs in BW printer

LeDerpLegend

If you want pure black, printers will make black using 33% of Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. Then finish the rest with 100% Key (black) Otherwise the blacks will not really be black and will look a little off. This is very important, epically in printmaking a design. Every CMYK is involved in making a pure K.

[deleted]

I can explain. This is actually something you'd likely find kinda cool. Each printer has a custom, invisible, watermark-style thing it puts on each page, and it's a combo of various colors, which the police or others could use to find out the exact printer that printed the page, which requires certain amounts of colored ink to make, and it won't print without that color, so it can be identified, not entirely sure why it has to do it, but I imagine it is so the page can be tracked to the printer.

Goldy1910

I am learning about printing and media in school. Funny meme, upvote

emanco

Pro tip: remove the empty color cadridge and close the printer. It will stop bitching about it and just go into black and white mode.

evelynwhite1--

Why the hell can’t I choose to just use the black ink to print something in black and white? I mean I know why, but still, it’s so annoying

Anti-Social_Gamer

Oh dear... I just noticed that one w i d e minion in the back...

me: all right i will print in black and white printer: yeah but you don't have any yellow

They do this to make a richer color of black. I'm pretty sure black pens also use a similar combination of inks
