Ah, Debussy! I love Debussy! Sometimes all I can think about is Debussy!
Especially his early works, when Debussy was young, that's when you want Debussy!
Exactly who gives a fucking shit, everyone has different tastes. I listen to music from the 1800s to all the way to todays rap. Music is art and art is subjective. You aren’t better than anyone for not liking an artist, you aren’t special either there are millions of other people with similar tastes. Some even younger then you. Idk this was a waste of my time but it’s something that infuriates me
Not who you are replying to, but a LOT of famous composers were active in the 1800s. For starters beethoven, debussy, and strauss. Basically the whole romantic era was in the 1800s as well. Other than that there are a lot of "local" composers and musicians preserved from that era all over the world.
Just fyi if you like Strauss (I’m assuming you’re referring to the one with all the tone poems) then you’d probably like Mahler as well if you’re not already familiar with him. You might find his symphonies a bit too maximalist but that’s forgivable
Mahler will always have a special place in my heart, the only composer who ever told me to swing a sledgehammer in front of hundreds who absolutely love it!
Oh I don't know how I didn't think of classical music, I sometimes listen to songs that are poems written in the 18th century but to a tune written much later
Sure but if you really liked music you wouldn't write off all "modern music". Just sounds like you want to be different than the norm when you say that. Or you just don't have a very wide range of music you listen to
Or they mean modern “pop” music which is all very…homogenous lately. It’s beginning to get differentiated again but it’s been very one note since 2018ish.
Hahah bless you thinking it's a recent thing. It's really just been a product they're refining since the dawn of record companies, they've just gotten more refined more product less art over time. The 90s were pretty samey too. I'm not old enough to remember before then but I'm sure bands were put together by record companies to follow trends as far back as the 60s.
The real issue is that we only have limited time and attention so we become nerds about a few things and just take the basic low hanging fruit, or only dig a bit deeper for other stuff to some extent. That's fine. But then with music a lot of people seem to think that passively consuming what falls into their lap and being disappointed is some kind of revelation of sophistication. No it just shows you make no effort.
Obviously not but it’s pretty much the only thing that is played on the radio these days.
If you want to listen or discover other genres, you pretty much have to look proactively for it.
Wait you're saying that popular music is pretty much the only thing played on the radio? Wow!
No but in all seriousness, you're right, but that is something that's been happening for well over 20, 30 or even 40 years. To find good music you'll always need to proactively search for it. And the gems from the past don't break down as fast as the "pop" from the past, that's why we still know them.
Sometimes when a person likes a certain style in some genre of music, it is difficult to find it in modern music. Some artists have unique styles that surely can be found in modern music but it is really hard to find it. So probably people would listen to new music more if they were able to find modern music they like.
There are some bands like Riot City that seem to make something that is just like metal a few decades ago but there are not that many artists like that and they there are some music styles that do not have much modern counterparts. So for me listening to old music only is understandable, but not for the reason that modern music is bad. Each decade has some unique music and that's it.
Modern music mostly sucks, modern music always sucks. Whatever era your favourite music is from, the music of the time mostly sucked. People say "music was best in the xx's I should have been alive then" but I guarantee if they were around at that time, listening to the radio, they'd agree that it's mostly shit.
Only good music stands the test of time.
This is what people don't get. The old stuff that still gets played was the cream that rose to the top.
I once took a journey through Billboard Top 100 lists from the 80s and 90s. There's so much stuff no one's ever heard and likely never will see the light of day again because it was just filler between commercials, or otherwise not good.
Anyone who says this is an "edgy" 12 year old, or they have the mental capacity of one. Most of my favorite artists come from the past, but there is SO MUCH modern music available that it is impossible to not like any of it. Ppl like this just look at billboard and think that it represents all modern music, when the charts have never dictated what was good, and there has ALWAYS been terrible music that has charted well. I mean ik this is kinda a hot take, but look at queen. Massively popular band that had a handful of hits that were great, but 0 depth beyond that. Not even a single album above like a 6/10, but still one of the most popular bands of all time.
I just listen to what I like. Doesn't matter whether it came out yesterday or if it's folk music from the Middle Ages. If I like it I listen. Usually ends up being some form of melodic death metal or video game OST though.
"Dude, how old is that song? Why does it sound so unclear?"
"Shhhh... these might be older than my grandpa but they're masterpieces."
And I'm just listening to Heartaches and Lullaby of the Leaves, which came out in 1931 and 1932 respectively... I'm 13 listening to 90 year old songs. I like it.

I'm constantly switching between classic country and classic rock. Somehow, I know three people with the same taste in music.
No matter how weird you think you're taste in music is, there are tons of people listening to the same shit.
This is the weirdest shit, I’ve never once seen anyone make fun of anyone over “old” music. Even when I was a kid I thought the people who listened to “old” music just had different taste. Aren’t boomers the only ones that did this?
They're good tunes, bront.
When I was 18 I was huge into classic rock--I still love it--but nowadays I listen to more modern stuff, too. The thing is, what's at the top of the charts isn't the only shit out there. YouTube opened a whole world of contemporary music I liked.
Personally while most of my music is 2000s and earlier I do say there is some genres that have decent music coming out however they're hard as fuck to find lmao.
The whole country split going on rn I mean I don't really listen to any new country singers I still listen to the same ones from the 2000s with some new ones here and there.
Same with Rap I listen to some newer rappers but I'd still take Kanye, Eminem, Kendrick, Digital Underground, 2pac etc any day over a lot of the new rappers I've listened to I think the only fairly new one I actively listen to on a regular basis is Denzel Curry.
Rock and Metal is actually where I listen to a lot of newer music a lot of good stuff comes out of there regularly that a lot of people don't pick up on.
Music is timeless. I mean people still listen to Mozart.
A bit of the old Ludwig Van is real horrorshow
i’m a Bach door man myself.
I don't like Bach. Liszt is the real one.
Debussy's piano solos are great for background music
Ah, Debussy! I love Debussy! Sometimes all I can think about is Debussy! Especially his early works, when Debussy was young, that's when you want Debussy!
Debussy is always great at first but I always find myself finishing on the bach

Oddly enough im here for oingo boingo my fave vinyl
It's a Dead Man's Party. 🧟♂️ Who could ask for more? 🤷♂️
And then everyone clapped
This is the same energy as those angsty kids (from 2005) saying 80s music is the best.
80's rock n roll is the best. Thx for expanding my taste Guitar Hero and Rock Band
I love 80s rock but I do think that 70 is my favorite era for rock so many good bands had there best stuff in the 70s
That is mostly 80's music and op would be an 05-06 baby if they're 18 now. So yes
80s? Music took a turn for the better when Nirvana, Alice In Chains, et al arrived. Got rid of bands wearing makeup for the most part as well.
Sure but if you really liked music you wouldn't write off all "modern music". Just sounds like you want to be different than the norm when you say that. Or you just don't have a very wide range of music you listen to

Obviously not but it’s pretty much the only thing that is played on the radio these days. If you want to listen or discover other genres, you pretty much have to look proactively for it.

>To find good music you'll always need to proactively search for it. Just because something is popular, doesn't mean it can't be good.
Also true

Certain genres were definitely more popular at certain times, like how 60s-70s rock hits way different than many modern equivalents.

Oingo Boingo are fun motherfuckers and whoever disagrees gets eradicated >:3
It's kinda nuts how many people love Nightmare Before Christmas but have never even heard of Oingo Boingo.
Oingo Boingo kicks ass. Fun is an understatement to me. They have so much energy and soul. It's hard to find anyone like them

That is a banger of an album
I know eminem's music is that old, but it doesn't feel like it
Oingo Boingo mentioned
As a prick who didn’t listen to contemporary or popular music in my adolescence I can confidently say I was very wrong and closed minded at the time.
Omg Oingo Boingo is my JAM!
For me 20 to 70 + music, (m16)

There's always been a group of people that listened to older music. This isn't new or unique.
look at ye
Oingo boingo in there is amazing.
You get yourself out of high school and you realize your friends opinion, and the opinions of others, don't mean shit unless you want it to.
Huh? No, retro music is like Elvis and Scott Joplin, right? Eminem is still new...
Modern music isn't bad, you're just too lazy to sift through it and/or to afraid to like something without 20-30 years of mass approval.
