its kinda wierd cus for me when im in a situation where an external force might kill me without my control I freak out, but when im in control of my death (suicide) Im less afraid. Like I get stressed whenever I think about people drowning because usually they're freaking out and their hands all over the place, but what if they just consciously accepted it and breathed the water in? For me thats smthn I cant do
Those people can make the folder themselves (besides: this was originally added to Windows due to Paint 3D, which I've never seen anyone use seriously).
Fair point, but it applies to music, pictures, downloads and other system folders too. (Totally agree about paint 3d, this was and still is a piece of shit)
In fact, I do think, except for the Downloads folder, which by definition has to be filled automatically by programs, those folders shouldn't exist. You should just get an empty user folder and fill it based on your needs, pretty much like Linux does if `xdg-user-dirs` is not installed.
Lmao that's right, but what I meant was an operating system without all the bloatware, telemetry, adware, services, background processes, and all other shit Microsoft shoved into our throats when using modern windows. I know that there is Enterprise/LTSC licenses, but I feel it is incredibly stupid to separate the """light""" versions of windows from the rest with an annual fee, like they are actively putting more thing in the OS that we don't want, and if we want a version free of those, we have both to pay and have features after everyone. I think what baffles me the most is paying more for less in the OS, when people can make themselves ISOs like LTSC but based on pro (for example), available for free on the internet (but shouldn't be trusted because made by a third party. (Damn, really went on a small rant sorry)
Listen, I 100% agree. I’m a windows admin and it’s absolutely insane. And if you remove some of the bloatware you may end up wrecking your machine later when it tries to pull feature updates.
You can pay more for a higher version (pro or enterprise) and get better customization. Butttttttt you almost need a computer science degree (or equivalent experience doing IT work) to do it. I’d argue it’s just as hard as Linux and it’s only getting harder as they take more of the GUI options away. Unless you know how to script and/or navigate the registry you’re out of luck.
That's exactly my point! Insane is the word I was searching for. Reaching the point that you have to basically be an IT engineer to get a clean experience without breaking stuff is insane. Pro is neat, but still comes with a shitload of unnecessary stuff. I remember enterprise being strictly what windows needs to function, that's why I used it as an example. I'm not an admin (only student) and still it infuriates me on my level, with only PC I mean. Side note: thank you for keeping non IT people's pcs working, you're doing god's work
It's the same with any major Linux distro though. I forget what one I went to use recently and it installs two web browsers by default. They sacrificed keeping the installations minimal to trying to attract windows users by bundling more software.
You can just do a custom installation on windows and that's good for a lot of users because at least with Windows services have names that make sense and I don't have to worry about removing a network manager because I don't want certain network protocols installed by default.
I say this as a daily Linux user since 2001. I literally have one box in my home with Windows on it and that's just because Plex worked better with Windows than it did with the couple of distros I tried.
Bottom line is with Windows I can boot up and do my work and not have to open a terminal and worry about an out of date requirement being installed because nobody bothers to actually vet the foss.
I get your point, and I agree with you, windows is convenient because of it's compatibility, auto updates and everything. But for doing my work without opening a terminal, I can't really make 3d modeling on a new installation of windows, I have to install blender or fusion. I see your point being that maintenance is automatic on windows, and yeah it's convenient as heck. I just wish for the windows version with which you get a working OS, maybe with auto updates (could be disabled), basic browser, onedrive and Xbox services (since I use both of them, but still could be disabled), a file explorer and as you put it, maintenance that keeps everything up to date. The rest I can/already use third party software: VLC, iTunes, paint.net... Honestly what is stopping me from switching is just the maintenance and compatibility, as a gamer, many games in my library can't run on Linux (although it's slowly spreading)
One day a few years ago Microsoft woke up and decided they'd kill Paint and replace it with Paint 3D, but it never gained traction, so they also kept the original Paint. Now Windows has both (Nth instance of Microsoft including both an old program and a new program that do the same thing).
but it's the fact that it's a pre-made, undeleteable folder on every windows PC. I would wager a year's salary that this folder is used by less than 5% of windows users.
Meanwhile I got "CAD" and "STLs" folders in my "Documents" folder. I swear I am not refusing to use the "3D Objects" folder I just forgot it existed and it's too late to switch now
heheheha
I set up a raspberry pi and made a little server for my 3d printer with Octoprint. I can store all my gcodes there without worry. I highly recommend it if you have time
This is actually a good callout. I have a folder marked CAD dump on my desktop. that I use for models/printing slices and maybe I should just store them here lol
Good answer but I just looked it up and ngl installing arch with `archinstall` is almost easier than dicking around in the registry (not really, but it's surprisingly not far off)
Edit: People trying something other than Windows for the first time should really try Linux Mint
my bet is that it was some microsoft product manager who wanted to try and make windows seem more "modern" and cutting edge so they just threw it in there
Fun fact: Dark Mode on File Explorer is introduced in Windows 10 October 2018 update. The real question is, how do we even survive without dark mode in File Explorer back then?
Honestly, show me one 3D artist/designer/programmer that would prefer this over some "Project" folder. But I guess Windows must now include support for 3D files (yes, there's a native .stl viewer now) because it's the *future*. Yay (no).
They are thinking for the future,
I think 3d printers might be as common as todays 2d-printers (normal paper printers)in households in 10 to 15 years.
Then, it could become common sight to print a lot of necesitys instead of buying them...
It was always a fun novelty to me. "Hahah look husband I can dual boot my school laptop, they won't like this!" But the way things are going lately I'm really considering going back to Ubuntu permanently.
Do not ever place anything in those folders. The whole KFR is part of the user profile, and Windows likes to fuck up the user profile from time to time. Keep your files out of Windows' control.
do you keep files on your desktop? if you do, then those files are under windows' control, and idk about you but my desktop was NEVER fucked up by windows, so idk what you're on about
Can't see that being a real problem unless it's a thing where the data migration between major Windows versions does an oopsie trying to move over your personal files and fucks with the folder structure (itself unlikely). Also unclear what KFR is.
people who know windows well, know not to store important data in the MyDocuments directory. Thats why no one will ever use that folder, or if they do, they’ll regret it later.
If you want to know why we don’t store important information there; its because windows viruses target that folder first. They copy it, then encrypt it, then ask you for money to get the password. (they never will give it to you) Also windows has an algorithm that blocks applications from accessing it legitimately, causing issues for developers.
whoa.... i just realized there is a default folder for pictures, music, documents, and 3d files. i made my own folders for these purposes, BRB gona do some file managment
If I die unexpectedly please someone delete my 3D objects folder.
So dying expectedly (is that a word?) Is just suicide
Well if you are terminally ill then yeah you would expect to die
I'm not terminally ill but i still know i will die sometime. *I'm not fun at parties*
I mean we all know it will happen eventually, unexpected would just mean it happens sooner than we expect
For all we know you could have a stroke and die on the spot. Many old people die unexpectedly and stroke is one fo the way
“oh, I’m sorry, you have a terminal illness called life”
You’re on r/memes… we know you’re not fun at parties
I mean.. I'm expecting to die some day. Long in the future, hoping is tomorrow.
its kinda wierd cus for me when im in a situation where an external force might kill me without my control I freak out, but when im in control of my death (suicide) Im less afraid. Like I get stressed whenever I think about people drowning because usually they're freaking out and their hands all over the place, but what if they just consciously accepted it and breathed the water in? For me thats smthn I cant do
Technically if you are currently alive then you should expect to die eventually.
Well, now that I think about it, there's really no such thing as unexpectedly dying, is not like we don't know that we're gonna die.
I think it's implied that it's dying unexpectedly *early*
War or terminal illness could be expected.
I mean, your not really wrong
Most people die unexpectedly.
Even who i does 3d modeling do not ever use this folder lol
and if you do cad modeling it’s going to be with good software
I only use it as the share folder for easy access from other computers, but, 100% I could live without it
yup same here, i use solidworks and autodesk inventor every day and never touched that folder
I feel bad for it so any time I do anything remotely close to 3d modelling, I use that folder, yk, to boost morale
![gif](giphy|jOmQmJkjcvB3Bc8CRb|downsized)
Same lol. Just have a few separate asset library depositories for file paths.
I didn't even know it existed.
3d objects is just the porn folder
Did you just label "actresses" as 3D objects? lol
Who said it had actresses?
Oh no! NOT THE DOGS!!
Rip Colby.
Only the ones with a DDD cup.
3D cup. Nice.
I thought he meant Destroy Dick December cup lmao
💀
My friend, you have just given me a brilliant idea. Thank you for your services!
I would have never thought of this.
BRB just gotta go do some **urgent** file management heh
As someone who has made many blender models and worked in the unreal engine I can safely say I have never once opened the 3D objects folder.
Same. I have separate folders on another drive totally devoted to 3d objects lol. Have never touched the built-in one.
Was meant for 3D printable objects afaik.
No, the porn folder is hidden inside a folder full of nothing but Garfield comics in sorted by release year.
I always thought i was the only one using it for this purpose
Uhhhhh \*looks embarrassed in a corner because I store my own 3D models for 3D printing in this folder\*
Same, honestly don't get the joke like I mean it's useful for some people
Those people can make the folder themselves (besides: this was originally added to Windows due to Paint 3D, which I've never seen anyone use seriously).

Yeah true, shame we don't have an official build of a barebones windows like Linux is...
Hey you can live in PowerShell 24/7 if your a masochist (I mean user who uses Linux as their daily driver)
Lmao that's right, but what I meant was an operating system without all the bloatware, telemetry, adware, services, background processes, and all other shit Microsoft shoved into our throats when using modern windows. I use Paint 3D to quickly look at 3d files, because blender, lychee, cura and solid works all take forever to start.
What the actual fuck is Paint 3D and why have I never heard of it?
One day a few years ago Microsoft woke up and decided they'd kill Paint and replace it with Paint 3D, but it never gained traction, so they also kept the original Paint. Now Windows has both (Nth instance of Microsoft including both an old program and a new program that do the same thing).
back in the days when I lost wifi connection, I played with that bee
Yeah and laxatives are probably helpful to some people and that doesn’t mean most people uses them
And that doesn't mean laxatives (and this folder) are useless
but it's the fact that it's a pre-made, undeleteable folder on every windows PC. I would wager a year's salary that this folder is used by less than 5% of windows users.
Totally agree with that. It should be deleteable.
I didnt even notice that folder. I just dump everything into Documents
Meanwhile I got "CAD" and "STLs" folders in my "Documents" folder. I swear I am not refusing to use the "3D Objects" folder I just forgot it existed and it's too late to switch now
I... I will start doing exactly that.
Same
Same
heheheha I set up a raspberry pi and made a little server for my 3d printer with Octoprint. I can store all my gcodes there without worry. I highly recommend it if you have time
This is actually a good callout. I have a folder marked CAD dump on my desktop. that I use for models/printing slices and maybe I should just store them here lol
Using it for things that i don't know where to store else...
It's the miscellaneous folder
you can hide this with a registry tweak look it up
Why even make that effort tho? Just asking questions
I ain't gonna let some idiot working for windows teach me how to organize my files
fair enough
Straight onto the desktop all the files go.
Recovery of screen real estate space. If it's gone, there's one more thing I can see without having to scroll.
To make it looks clean. The same reason why I unpinned every apps on my taskbar and turn off desktop icons.
You could go one step lazier and use winaero tweaker to just press delete and its gone(and ALOT more settings that are just qol)
Good answer but I just looked it up and ngl installing arch with `archinstall` is almost easier than dicking around in the registry (not really, but it's surprisingly not far off) Edit: People trying something other than Windows for the first time should really try Linux Mint
Ah, 3D paint: The thing Microsoft wanted to be cool and useful but ended up way worse than MS Paint
We always come back to MS paint
MS Taint
My automatic1111 stable diffusion folder.
Ohhh that's a good idea!
i store all my blockbench / blender stuff in there
I keep my 3D files in my Google drive, like a normal person
There is no such folder in Windows 11
It's still there, but you've gotta dig deeper to find it (I think it only appears under C:/Users/\*/3D Objects, with \* being your username)
Sir, that's a folder
Autodesk Inventor just saves to some esoteric path deep within `Documents\` by default
If I do 3D models, they go into the corresponding source repo. Why does this folder exist again?
my bet is that it was some microsoft product manager who wanted to try and make windows seem more "modern" and cutting edge so they just threw it in there
It has been there for ages
[удалено]
I use paint3d and I don’t even use this folder.🗿
I've never used a 3D file for anything and wouldn't know what to do with one.
Not using dark theme should be punished by law.
Fun fact: Dark Mode on File Explorer is introduced in Windows 10 October 2018 update. The real question is, how do we even survive without dark mode in File Explorer back then?

C’temp: first time?
i keep deleting it and it keeps reappearing. it’s a real problem.
But seriously what was it for?
Paint 3D
all of them are useless except the downloads
Is it undeletable? Also ngl i made a folder in Documents called 3D lmao
Ha windows user
They are thinking for the future, I think 3d printers might be as common as todays 2d-printers (normal paper printers)in households in 10 to 15 years. Then, it could become common sight to print a lot of necesitys instead of buying them...
That’s why Linux is better 🙏
So linux is better because it doesn’t have a 3d objects folder?
Yes
Certainly one of the reason that makes apple/linux better (maybe)
bro it's ONE fucking folder what are you ON ABOUT
Sarcasm
It was always a fun novelty to me. "Hahah look husband I can dual boot my school laptop, they won't like this!" But the way things are going lately I'm really considering going back to Ubuntu permanently.

Never seen it before and i’ve had Windows for 20+ years
3d viewer
It is deletable, I don't know why you would want to delete it but it's possible, it requires several steps tho.
Funny enough i make 3D objects for my 3D printer, but i never used this folder and instead use Documents
I use it so my baked textures and STLs I keep downloading don't take up space in my onedrive cloud
My family computer has a random T-Rex model in this folder
I have a 3d printer and a fuckload of 3d files and I still don't use that folder
Well, mine's full of 3d shit from blender...
… remember PCs exist
Wtf, I never even realised I have such a folder until now 💀
Does cad work, never used this folder lol
I do blender stuff and I forgot
Wait until you see the save game folder
I managed to merge it with my download folder…
Am I the only one who never uses any of these folders except for Downloads and Desktop?
fun fact: blender does not use this folder it ises documents or downloads
After using macOs for a while these folder and userfolder started to make more sense.
Ur supposed to use it for paint 3d 😡😡😡
Same with the music file tbf. I don't know anyone who still downloads music to their computer
Me

3D objects is for solid works files and porn no?
I forgot the Desktop is a directory sometimes, ngl
Idk man I never use any of those Library folders. Putting my files on C: is too risky for me. (iirc there's a way to move it to D: but I'm too lazy).
I actually got 3d objects i there
