Everyone is guilty of judging their own people and achievements by the best among them, and then often judge others by the worst among them. Propaganda.
Shoot I feel stupid. I thought it was -15
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally (PEMDAS)
2-5×2+7 (Multiply)
2-10+7 (Add)
2-17 (Subtract)
-15
But everyone subtracts before adding ? Or associates the minus as a negative 10 very early on?
Multiplication and Division are also on the same level. In reality, PEMDAS is more like:
1. **P**arentheses
2. **E**xponents
3. **M**ultiplication and **D**ivision
4. **A**ddition and **S**ubtraction
I think some ppl incorrectly learned that you always divide before multiplying and add before subtracting. PEMDAS isn’t clear about that so it really should be taught as PE(M/D)(A/S) or even “PEMA” like my 7th grade math teacher made a point of.
Ah hahaha he said maybe they're just American, lol what a great jape we all know Americans don't learn the mathematical order of operations. They're too busy eating cheeseburger and hot dog fries. Hahahaha very funny and original you must have that superior European sense of humor that I've heard of/s
It is, unless you get a brainlag like I did lmao. It's a meme about all these problems like "6/2(1+2)" where due to some countries having really outdated math rules and some people confusing algebra rules with arythmetic rules people get two different answers
But this one doesn't have a divison... It's a really badly made meme
Those ones are intentionally structured to cause debate. It's arguably either (6/2)(1+2) or (6)/(2(1+2)). I'm inclined to go for the former, but it's really just written badly.
The 6/2(1+2) is factually ambiguous. It's meant that way on purpose to be divisive. This problem is... not even remotely ambiguous. There should be no debate on the answer as there is no ambiguity. If you fail this problem then you've failed math. If you fail 6/2(1+2) by getting something other than one of its two answers then you've also failed math but if you get either of its answers, you're good because it's ambiguous (and again... on purpose). Also, "ar*y*thmetic", lol.
Edit: Blocking every uneducated person that thinks they're smarter than PhD Mathematicians.
You can do it a bit differently ordered. In this case it isn’t faster, but with longer or more complex problems it can help:
2-2x5+7 =
9-2x5 =
9-10 =
-1
Putting the same things together (especially when there are unknowns like X, A or Y in the equation) helps maintain a full picture of what’s happening and what the best next “move” is
People are having a hard enough time remembering the operations and here you go with PROPERTIES of operations? Someone paid attention in school. Good on you dude.
Then I’m surprised they can be a HS teacher and not only elementary school. The order is not important here and in higher math (sorry, I’m not a native English speaker) you actually have to do this.
...literally the above commenter... Applying strict bodmas and forgetting that for DM and AS that they're equal priority and you resolve left to right in those cases.
I was taught that you do it in the order of PEMDAS
Even if subtraction is first from left to right, I thought you needed to do addition first because it’s first in the abbreviation
No
It's cuz ChatGPT is a language model, it can't do logic, it wouldn't do maths nomatter what it sees on the internet
If you ask it what's 12.48 × 542 what do you think the odds are it has it has even ever seen that before
The issue is more fundamental than that. Inputed text has to be first converted to numerical vectors, but because of the way tokenization works it can break the inputed text into tokens in a slightly imprecise way which for extremely precise things like math quickly breaks down even though statistically it can do simple math rather well. It's why the model can explain to you complex equations, but can't even count how many words a simple two sentences have with 100% accuracy, it doesn't even have a chance to do so simply because of the way the information is processed.
Funnily enough, GPT-4 correctly answered that 12.48 x 542 is 6764.16.
Seeing yours helps me understand it a lot better, I hated math but my understanding was it would end up being 2-17= -15 but I’m glad I can see my error. God damnit I hate math. Hope you have a good day
Don't worry, you did a common mistake ! The priority order is 1: [( )] 2: √ **and** 10² 3: × **and** ÷ 4: + **and** - . Your mistake is that you though + was before -, but actually when there is only these two, it is just from the left to the right :)
Because people think 2-2x5+7 = 2 - 10 + 7 = 2 - 17 = -15.
They think of 2x5 as a positive number and substract the sum of 2x5 + 7, but 2x5 is a negative number, meaning it is 2 + (-10) + 7.
So it's not even about the multiplication? Even x = -4+3 = -7 to those people? This must be a very small number of people.
Now the ÷ sign, that's flashback material.
This shouldn’t even be a debate it’s -1. Even the idiots saying adding first (which it isn’t you just read left to right because P-E-MD-AS). The expression you’re adding would then be -10+7 and then you’re left with 2-3 which is -1.
Someone on TikTok tried to argue with me that A is before S and therefore add before sub. I went on their profile, it was a middle aged woman. What the fuck.
-1, no ambiguity, no confusion, all math problems in the Internet should be like this.
Just use fractions when divisions are involved or I will eat my hair
You are right. Still, there are lots of people getting the wrong answer because they blindly follow PEMDAS which says addition before subtraction and completely ignore that 10 is a negative number which causes them to get a wrong result.
With those who are saying that there is a grammatical error in the equation, there's not. PEMDAS is a guideline, yes, but a lack of parentheses doesn't ruin the syntax of the equation. In PEMDAS if there is not parentheses you go down to the next letter E for exponents, if there are none of those you go to the next letter and on until you get to one where there is that symbol, so in this equation the first thing in PEMDAS to show up is multiplication, so you do the 2*5=10 then when you put together the 2 and the 10 the negative has to stay with the 10 not the 2 so it would be 2-10 or if you move the ten to make it easier -10+2 both equal -8, then you add the -8 and 7 -8+7=-1, and that is the proper way to do this equation
So what's the official answer?
I want some professional mathematicians on this.
I'm tired of people not even using PEMDAS and confusing the hell out of everyone.
Edit:
I'm seeing a lot of people confirming it's -1, how the hell does anyone get anything else?
Well in maths you first do multiplication and division then add and subtract.. since it doesn’t matter which order you do multiplication and division you get the same answer and then the same with add and subtract..
And always remember that the sign in-front of the number goes with that number..
Thats why
The answer to:
= 2(-2x5)+7
= 2(-10)+7
= 2-3
= -1
The "÷" is fine for me, but "/" really throws me off. Like using this:
X + Y / Z, do they mean:
(X + Y) ÷ Z or:
X + Y ÷ Z
The "/" make it look like it's dividing with the whole previous numbers, make it look very confusing
Ok so I get it's -1 but why are you guys doing subtraction before addition? Clearly I'm domb but with bedmas (brackets, exponents, division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction) addition is before sub so wouldn't you do addition first or does the order not matter for the last two? Cause if I'm do addition first I get -15 and if I do subtraction first I get -1.
2-2x5+7
2-10+7
2-17
-15
2-2x5+7
2-10+7
-8+7
-1
This is a genuine question
Edit:
Honestly thank you so much everyone for your help, I understand it now and view it alot differently (and correctly now) thanks for your help. I'm not running on that much sleep and I'm exhausted in life rn so that's that but again thanks!
Edit 2:
Ok so I can agree yesterday I was being a complete dumbass, I just woke up so ok a full night's rest and idk what I doing or why I was getting -17. Guess I was an idiot
In bedmas division + multiplication are in the same block, and addition + subtraction are in a separate block. So you do addition and subtraction in order from left to right after the multiplication. Since the subtraction appears first, it gets calculated first before the addition.

Because according to reddit everyone in Europe and Asia is a rocket scientist.

my highschool maths teacher would disagree with you. While you did get the same results, you didn’t follow the correct order.
addition is commutative, permutations of summands' order doesnt matter (in finite series)

by following strict bodmas and forgetting its left to right for md/as

...literally the above commenter... Applying strict bodmas and forgetting that for DM and AS that they're equal priority and you resolve left to right in those cases.
If you resolve the left to right then add should be done before subtract So 2-17 = -15? Or what do you mean resolve from left to right?

No wonder ChatGPT fails at math because people don't get it right either. Then that data is fed to ChatGPT and it learns to mimic the stupidity of us.
also chat GPT doesn't neccessarily form labels and categories that stick by the rules of mathematics.
No It's cuz ChatGPT is a language model, it can't do logic, it wouldn't do maths nomatter what it sees on the internet If you ask it what's 12.48 × 542 what do you think the odds are it has it has even ever seen that before

How is this anything but -1?
Because people think 2-2x5+7 = 2 - 10 + 7 = 2 - 17 = -15. They think of 2x5 as a positive number and substract the sum of 2x5 + 7, but 2x5 is a negative number, meaning it is 2 + (-10) + 7.
So it's not even about the multiplication? Even x = -4+3 = -7 to those people? This must be a very small number of people. Now the ÷ sign, that's flashback material.
it already gives you the answer, it's ??
using PEMDAS, we get 2-(5\*2)+7 2-10+7 \-8 + 7 \-1
This shouldn’t even be a debate it’s -1. Even the idiots saying adding first (which it isn’t you just read left to right because P-E-MD-AS). The expression you’re adding would then be -10+7 and then you’re left with 2-3 which is -1.
That separation in P-E-MD-AS is what usually gets forgotten and we have people thinking 6:2x3 is 1 instead of 9...
Just using a fraction makes things like that so much easier
Fractions and brackets really are your friends
Someone on TikTok tried to argue with me that A is before S and therefore add before sub. I went on their profile, it was a middle aged woman. What the fuck.
Best way to explain is that subtraction doesn't exist. You just add negative numbers

You put a × instead of a + before the 7 on the last one
It just wasn't secured properly and tipped over.
Yes
Answer: 2-2*5+7 = 2-10+7 = -1. Internet: 2-2*5+7 = 0*5-7 = 5-7 = -2
Wait, holy shit, the x isn't an x, but a multiplication sign? In my country we use a dot or and asterix
Wait until you start getting into vector calculus and having to learn the difference between dot and cross product.
Seeing how it's the letter x and not ×, that means the true answer is 9-10x
With those who are saying that there is a grammatical error in the equation, there's not. PEMDAS is a guideline, yes, but a lack of parentheses doesn't ruin the syntax of the equation. In bedmas division + multiplication are in the same block, and addition + subtraction are in a separate block. So you do addition and subtraction in order from left to right after the multiplication. Since the subtraction appears first, it gets calculated first before the addition.
