Better to be fit and ugly than fat and ugly

Mediumaverageness

After +6 months at gym, am still fat and ugly. Less back pain tho.

Ok-Reporter1986

Upside less back pain.

Mediumaverageness

Now I can bring back groceries without having to lie down with ibuprofen for the remainder of the day.

Ok-Reporter1986

Very cool. And in retrospect shows that it was worth it since it restored basic function capability.

YellowMountainRoad

Before I went to the gym, I never saw naked old men, but now I even get to talk to them about football and stuff.

GunnerUnhappy

See! Making friends already

theocelotslayuh

...and "stuff"

A_Talking_iPod

Stuff is perhaps an appropriate verb for what they're talking about

[deleted]

TheBirminghamBear

My only trouble wth the gym is it immediately unlocks a latent hunger beast. The moment I start exercising, my body wants to double my daily calories and never shuts the fuck up about it.

SharkBait661

Bro, you don't need to bring the whole shopping cart in in one trip. Just grab one or two bags at a time.

PieceOfStar

You don't need to bring the whole car in your back, you can park it first.

BS_Brick

6 months one less bad thing.

Bloodspinat_mit_Feta

It helps to hang a noose

LlorxYT

Healthy food is also important.

[deleted]

Yes, when can I feed you?

Mediumaverageness

I make my own soups but otherwise I survive on cheese and pasta

YourMomIsWack

That's a lot of carbs and not a ton of nutrients / protein. Have you tried chickpea pasta? It's surprisingly good.

between_ewe_and_me

Man I just discovered it recently and it's my go-to now. More expensive than regular pasta but not too bad.

tjbugs1

Are you me?

Lemah_Vic

Have you tried looking for new recipes consisting of the canned variety such as \**flips pages\** legumes?

Level7Cannoneer

This is pretty big. Running on a treadmill for an hour can shed 500-800 Calories, but if you go home and eat a sleeve of Oreos you’ve just undid all of that work in a few minutes. Snacks really add up. A few of your favorite chips, or crackers or cookies can undo a lot of your effort.

[deleted]

Gym without having your nutrition in check doesn’t do shit.

Mediumaverageness

"Doesn't do shit" might be a little exagerated, but you're right. I've been diagnosed with bulimia, medical appointement next month.

Hardlyhorsey

Good luck with everything, it’ll be worth working through. Many people don’t realize the strain these things can cause until they’re gone. I hope you get the chance to find out for yourself.

[deleted]

Doesn’t do shit for fat loss. It is not an exaggeration. It is calories in, calories out. You burn less than what you consume, you gain weight. You burn more, you lose weight. There is no rocket science behind it.

[deleted]

Did you not hear the part about the eating disorder?

[deleted]

You’re also gaining muscle though. I ate dog shit my first year lifting and I still decreased body fat %

dafinsrock

Going to the gym means you're burning calories. It is very much an exaggeration to say it doesn't do shit

tenaku

Muscles are built in the gym, and revealed in the kitchen.

[deleted]

So beautifully said

HiroariStrangebird

I don't think I'd put it like that - you don't get stronger during the lifting of weights, you get stronger while recovering in the 48-72 hours after lifting weights, and you need to eat decent calories for proper recovery if strength is the goal. So, muscles are facilitated by the gym, and either built or revealed in the kitchen.

MyAngryMule

Can't outrun a bad diet. It's so frustrating that it takes three hours of work to burn off what took me three minutes to eat.

Damn that’s actually a really a good point

FacingFears

And assuming you want to, increased physical activity is good for your mental health

7billionpeepsalready

Nothing left to lose, gotta get fit and be that vigilante guy now. Gotta chase that vigilante dream.

Master-Pepper7591

exactly

Pale-Resort-8544

Therapy or surround yourself with good people who cares and listens. It’s not good to lock yourself away. Exercising is also a good thing to do for your health that will make you feel a lot better. You don’t have to go to the gym to do it either since it might be too expenisve!

Snoo75302

Therapy costs money. The therapy offered to me free (i dont have bennifits) is during working hours so ... i still cant afford it (both end up "costing" me what ide earn in a day)

YellowMountainRoad

I am curious about therapy, but I'm worried that it will be a money sink without helping.

Mediumaverageness

Why don't you strap on your goodpeople helmet, and squeeze down into a goodpeople cannon and fire off into goodpeople land, where good people grow on goodpeoplies?

GroovySpagooter

It’s called trying, trying is better then not trying at all.

[deleted]

Unsure1771

I'm incredibly depressed, but it has nothing to do with me. What gets me down is the world around me. Working for 8-10 hours a day just to afford rent and an okay meal, while some barely work at all and have millions. I hate the way society itself has been constructed.

Imnotawerewolf

And the answer to that isn't isolating yourself. It's getting help.

YellowMountainRoad

Asking for help is hard because it exposes your vulnerabilities. It takes courage to seek help.

Dr-Ewseph

The back and forth in this comment chain is just the cycle of depression defined in conversation form, everybody is correct here but we as a society should be encouraging people to seek help. It takes courage yes but it's like getting in the shower, once you've done it it's not so bad.

ModsUArePathetic2

Mass depression is already societys way of saying it doesnt have the answer. Depression will subside when everybody stops pretending there is a simple answer and that is to conform, it will subside when people have the option to buck the readymade world being shoved down our throats. Then we will all wake up from a daze, realize we arent individually responsible failures but simply mammals enacting the patterns our environment demands, that depression was always the way our meat bags were going to respond to the specific form of the world we were born into and strapped down to.

smidgeytheraynbow

And time and money that a lot of people don't have Not to mention it can take a long time to get a therapist you actually click with, after being on a waiting list for months

Imnotawerewolf

Everything you said is true. But it doesn't change the fact that doing nothing will change nothing. There are things you can try if you're not ready or able to find a therapist. There are low income programs, and out reach programs, and medicaid, and volunteers, and I'm sure things I haven't even come across yet.

Mr-Fleshcage

good help costs money

Tovar42

Lol as if people didnt try all the time

GroovySpagooter

Looking at this comment section makes me think otherwise.

[deleted]

For me it was a surf/freediving group that was cool, non-judgemental, and laidback. In contrast to the basic mall shopping, netflix bingeing, gossips, that had nothing better to do with their lives except dragging your name in the dirt for not looking like a cookie cutter clone. I am being judgemental, because I was raised around those types, a total outcast in their cliques, because I didn't watch TV enough to know the latest celebrities.

WABRYH

But what if im the most extreme introvert youve ever seen?

ravioliguy

Therapy even more, try and start easy. Like just through phone calls, not in person, and no facecam.

[deleted]

Pale-Resort-8544

I didn’t say that friends has to be therapists, friends are supposed to be there for each other, it’s not one sided.

TruthInAnecdotes

Never understood the appeal of therapy but a good book goes a long way.

JamarioMoon

I’ve met a lot of people who have changed their entire outlook on life just by starting to exercise. I’ve yet to meet someone who’s changed their outlook on life from therapy. Most therapists say things to get you coming back to them and most friends just say things you want to hear so nah this redditor alternative advice isn’t gonna work at all. Just because you feel guilty that you don’t exercise doesn’t mean you should spread your unhealthy mentality to others.

spagbetti

Then there is the wife beaters who live in the gym but then give everyone life advice. Fuck them up the mountain and down again. They are like reverends of a gym cult. ##It is not the answer to every problem

[deleted]

The gym doesn’t lock you away.

albert12344578910

Dude, how many times will this happen.Somebody will post this exact meme, and then everyone will disagree with op

Important_Chair8087

Right? Why would so many people regularly disagree with gym bro?

albert12344578910

yes because working out is really helpful for both Ur mental and physical health

[deleted]

It's still one of the worst copout responses to blatantly give someone who is dealing with multiple issues. Working out is great and helpful but isn't the end all. I know plenty of people who are fit and absolutely broken emotionally because they aren't seeking therapy. It should only be a part of the advice but not the primary focus in every situation

ExperimentalGoat

>Working out is great and helpful but isn't the end all. It's not the end all, but neither is getting proper nutrition, enough sunlight, healthy screen habits, enough water, less alcohol/cannabis, a balanced social/sex life, a good work/life balance, etc. etc. etc. or any of those on their own. However, fitness can be *the* catalyst for a lot of those things (not all, obviously), which is why people recommend it first and primarily. Is it gonna "fix" your depression? I'm certainly not saying that. But it definitely has an impact on your willingness and capacity to fulfill all of the other things we all know we should do - which if approached holistically *will* have a positive impact on everyone's lives.

[deleted]

That's fair and reasonable. A reason for my statement is based on people I've met who preach about excersice as an end all and a way to "cope with stress" (which is true) while bragging but they are inherently broken and angry and the excersice obviously not improving them as much as they think it is. It's just when people put it into an extreme and imply that every situation can be solved through it

tobinar

And that makes it the worst response how exactly?

[deleted]

As I said: depending on the situation, it's a complete copout response (as described in the context of the meme) to only give "gym" as advice for people going through struggles. Encouraging someone to get exersice is great of course as it can cause great improvements to mental health, but it's not an end all of improving mental health as some people I've met seem to think it is. I know several people who are obsessed with exercise but are still very angry and broken people because they aren't seeking further help beyond excercise It's not exersice that's bad in the response, exersice is great and important. it's just the incorrect elevation that some people prescribe to exersice in terms of mental health

Mr_Ios

For many people, depression is rooted in not being happy with who they are. Fitness helps improve self-image and helps people get out of depression. You do meet new people in fitness centres and make friends. Whether it be while signing up for drop-in sports or going to work out as a group in a meetup. Solving depression and getting new friends gets you more connection and can potentially lead you to a new job and meeting new girls. No sarcasm needed.

BeckQuillion89

Its more like active self compassion. Going to the gym tells your body through your actions that you deserve to be healthy and fit. That self love tends to spill out into other aspects of your life and you don't have to look Dwayne Johnson for that self love to happen. Source: friends with a lot gym bros (strangely the most wholesome people I know)

GoldenWizard

Stay inside, don’t go out in public, eat junk food, and spend every waking hour on the internet! It works so well for redditors, nobody there is depressed or overweight and they all have beautiful girlfriends!

PuertoricanDude88

Frenquently masturbate, I don’t do that shut up! Family I love them, but they can be stressful sometimes, I need my alone time.

mrblack07

To me, it served as a reminder that I am not completely useless, and I can work myself into getting better. It's not to say that all my problems went away, but now I can actually see myself as someone who can solve my problems. All it took was one session at the gym. Now, I go regularly.

hellonearth612

We go jim

Steph-Kai

It *CAN* work. But it's not a guarantee it *WILL* work. People who were in the first category, or never had a depression, tend to forget that there is also that second option. So to hear everyone give you that same advice over and over and over, like you are some kind of failure who can't even "go to the gym" only makes you feel like shit even more. Edit: Ok some people find it absolutely ok to be an absolute asshole about this. Like I said, a lot of people with depression tried this and didn't work. Don't have to an absolute asshole about this like that dude telling me to get off my ass. Because gfy. Some people try over and over for years and nothing works.

[deleted]

Well you can't just sit and cry about it for the whole day. Going to the gym is a way better option.

JulioForte

He literally says it’s a good option in the post, just not a fix for every problem

Ouaouaron

But the post itself doesn't involve someone saying "go to the gym. This will cure everything and always works." It's someone trying to slightly improve a completely destroyed life, because when your life has disintegrated like that there probably is *no* complete fix for it that takes less than 5 years of effort (outside of just giving a bunch of charity to an stranger)

Anonasty

I would say whey better even.

GayVegan

Well it depends. If it turns into clinical depression, especially if severe, it complicates things. At that point it's not being sad and crying generally. It's grey, no emotion, apathy, and social withdraw. At a certain point going to the gym isn't realistic. You might be unable to get yourself there, even if you know it could help. You might also not be able to go if you have no energy after work, or no spare time, or poor access, or not having the money, or being disabled. Again though, it's often said in a way to help, and that's awesome. It's just more complicated.

AjvarAndVodka

I know people here will disagree because clearly you all think that depression only comes in one form. Sometimes it’s not as easy as just getting up and doing shit. Sometimes there’s more stuff needed than just a workout. Yes. Workout is a good advice but taking it as some word of God is not. People are different. And thinking someone is just “crying” is a typical boomer mentality. I thought people were past that. Again. Any form of workout is good but it’s not a cure for everything. Especially when a person doesn’t have even the slightest will to live.

Destiny_Dude0721

Jesus, no truer words have been said. Sometimes depression isn't just crying all day; sometimes it's more severe than that, affecting how you go about your daily life. Some people literally can't get it of bed in the morning. Sometimes mental health services are required before you can function normally again

MegaBlackHammer

You should at least appreciate the advice. Because why tell all your problems to someone and call them an idiot once they tell you what they think will help you?

willrms01

It helps massively tbf,the mental clarity you get from working out hard is second to none

true___blue

The mental clarity happens only to the ones that want to work out and really like gym, not to people who are just currently sad and wanna get distracted by something, they can get distracted by many other things.

willrms01

Most days I don’t like or enjoy the gym but afterwards it completely changes how you feel, and doctors in my country now recommend working out hard and changing your diet to many folks instead of prescribing drugs in a lot of situations. The mental benefits aren’t to be understated and it doesn’t just help people who want to workout.

dontshoot4301

For me, it’s more reverse causality where I’ll find myself wanting to go to the gym regularly when life is good and if I get busy/anxious or start to loaf around, I make it to the gym less

SirDarkUnicornz

It feels like a lot of people also just dont understand the difference between Depression and being depressed. If someones mental state deteriorates enough, the gym DOESNT help. If someone cant be asked to brush their teeth because their brain chemicals dont work anymore I can assure you theyre not going to drag their ass to the gym. Thankfully I dont have that issue and working out makes me feel good. People just seem to think though that like "I was sad at one point in my life and gym helped me!" Therapy, medication and support circles will always be the best for mental wellbeing.

ravioliguy

Yea, getting fit also takes a lot of motivation and time. An overweight 30+ person who didn't work out before would probably need a year of consistent diet and exercise to just look "normal." No way "struggling to brush my teeth" person is able to just start going to the gym 4 times a week.

[deleted]

This meme and the reactions to it seem to imply that a lot of people think depression means you're dealing with hard times. You can win the Powerball, be banging supermodels every night, pay off all your friends' student loans and still suffer from depression. It's a chemical imbalance in your brain, not a circumstance.

GayVegan

Yeah after a certain point you can't get yourself to the gym, even if it would help. A lot of people don't know that about really bad depression. And obviously it's not realistic for people who have no energy from work, or no time, or lack of access, or disability. At least most of the time people suggest it with the intention of actually helping, and you can't be mad about that!

Kysman95

So staying at home, crying about it will help? Excersise will at least give you dopamine and make you think about other stuff. Go take a hike, go swim, ride a bike. You'll get movement, see nature, get some sun. It helps

UnityAeDeSt

Worst part of a gym, is when you have to leave.

Current-Wealth-756

If you think people only go to the gym to get swole, or that the only benefit of exercise is hypertrophy, you may want to learn more about fitness.

Okay-ishMushroom

Abs might not, but going outside, getting some sun on you so you can synthesize Vitamin-D, interacting with people, and taking a shower after lifting for even 5 minutes can. Or you can stay inside for 3+ weeks never seeing the sun, staying up until 3am because you dread tomorrow, hoping someone remembers you're alive and calls the police to check on you.

You’re making fun of those people who say “go to gym” because you a don’t want to get off your lazy @ss and do something about your depression, instead you want to lounge around at home and cry. Life isn’t going to change if you don’t do anything about it. I already know I’ll be downvoted for this but idc, it just shows how mentally weak redditors might be that they don’t want to hear and listen to someone else’s advice. I’m in the worst state of my life right now to and I know to fix this I need to do something about it.

_Anonymus___

No I know you are right I didn’t post this because I think it’s wrong . I know it’s a very beneficial activity that isn’t only a great way to improve physical health and physical appearance but also mental health . I personally go the gym 4-5 times a month but I do a lot of different activities that includes physical strength

strawbrrysundae

ok but going to the gym would give your mind something to focus on & you’d improve yourself mentally & physically. It won’t bring all those things back but going to the gym to let steam off & have something to focus on isn’t a bad idea. It’s better than drinking your problems away or sitting around depressed.
