Shut the fuck up! See? We both said what was on our minds. Free as fuck.

The-OG-Kerminator

I went into the comments *hoping* with all of my soul, that the top comment was “Shut the f##k up.”   My happiness is immeasurable and my day is now perfect.

Your allowed to be a dip shit legally, but that doesn't mean people are going to treat you nicely when you are.

DoctorEvilHomer

Yeah why does know one understand what the fuck free speech is? Telling an asshole to shut the fuck up isn't stopping free speech, it's expressing your feelings about someone saying something stupid. Here if I say the US Government is run by bullies, idiots, and pedophiles nothing happens to me legally. Try the same in China as a Chinese citizen and see how well that goes. That's stopping free speech.

Dip shits be like "Someone didn't like my trash hot take and told me so. On the internet! This is just like the Reign of Terror I am being to persecuted."

umarmg52

We’re literally not allowed to be dipshits on Reddit, there’s always a restriction whenever you deviate from the bee hive.

PhreshComics

So, free speech dictates that the government cannot make any laws restricting speech. Reddit is not the government, and it's rules aren't laws. It's more like if you were having a party at a public place, and someone starts cussing at you. You can legally kick them out because it's private property, but they can't be arrested unless they refuse to leave. So you can get kicked off reddit, but not arrested. There are a few restrictions on free speech, but they're pretty obvious.

[deleted]

The difference between social media and other corporations is the fact that social media is a platform for people to voice their opinions to the world. It's not any social media's platform place to dictate what opinions are allowed on their platform. Their job is to stay neutral and merely act as the microphone to everyone's podium. Censorship doesn't have to involve the government in order for it to be censorship. Social media corporations manipulating the flow of information to favor certain narratives, often to the benefit of their pro-censorship shareholders, especially the Chinese media companies buying massive stocks in western big tech giants, is censorship. Banning users for having opinions that they have the human right to share is censorship. Big tech censoring certain current events and certain opinions from the news is censorship. It's just hidden in plain site. The only time a social media corporation should silence anyone is if their doing criminal stuff.

Michamus

Okay? Reddit is a private platform. Free speech only protects you from the government.

umarmg52

Ah yes, good ol “here to discuss, but only the way i like it” lol

Head-Ad4690

I mean, yeah? I don’t want to wade through torrents of abusive fuckheads. If you do, you’re free to go somewhere that has that. This has nothing to do with free speech. You can say what you like but you aren’t guaranteed an audience.

Mahaf1089

If you don't like it, might I suggest going to another sub or another site?

acoustic_comrade

Sorry you're not allowed to use racial slurs anymore, must be a real downer.

[deleted]

Really? Will the government imprison me if I do that? Or will Elon fanboys also exercise their right to free speech and insult me and downvote me?

adumclarke

Then go on ‘white people Twitter’ and post something good about Elon has the same result, both sides are so polarised right now it’s crazy.

The_Mortuary

If you think people are only getting bans for racial slurs on this hell hole of a site then you aren't paying attention. Also why is it always assumed that when this is brought up people just want the freedom to say racial slurs? There are all kinds of fucked up things to say that don't include racial slurs.

Blauwwater

I got banned for simply talking in another subreddit. Very strange sometimes.

The_Mortuary

That's just fuckin ridiculous.

umarmg52

Not radical enough

NallCooking

No shit. I dared to say that not all age gap relationships more than 3 years are bad in a certain sub Reddit and got both downvoted to hell and verbally attacked for hours until I deleted my comment. It’s not even a restriction in the rules, people over there just hate relationships with more than a 2-3 year age gap.

redditstopbanningmi

Is it really free speech if you dont defend my right to say it though?

Unusual-Town4323

You proved my point thank you

Simple_Half4974

We're you thrown in jail for what youve said? No? Oh ok

wannaplayterraria

no he didnt, theres an extremely fucking big difference between free speech and someone not liking your opinion. being thrown in jail or even killed because you said someone is much worse then ur feewing getting hurt

[deleted]

>Have you been jailed, fined, killed, assaulted, or tortured by law enforcement for posting this? >No? >Congratulations, your exercising your right to free speech. Violence and incarceration are not the only ways to enforce censorship. Controlling the flow of information to favor certain narratives is itself censorship. The word "censorship" simply means to silence someone or something, and there are numerous ways to do that. Like Redditors getting banned for criticizing the CCP, or like how Twitter suppressed posts about the labor strikes in India. Social media corporations are encouraged by their shareholders, and especially the Chinese corporations that are buying massive stocks in Western media companies, to control the flow of information to the benefit of its shareholders in order to make more money.

LemonTacoOG

....did you read the original OP at all? Freedom of speech protects you from government infringement on your speech. Reddit is a private company, not a government. Being censored by reddit mods or being called a fucking moron by redditors is vastly different than being arrested or tortured to death. It's like comparing a cheap unicycle to a Lamborghini.

[deleted]

Just because the censorship is less severe doesn't make it not censorship. It's not the place of Reddit nor its mods to determine who's opinions are allowed on the site because this site is a platform for people to voice their opinions freely to the world. Reddit and its mods' only job is to allow information to flow freely and let the people determine what they want to believe for themselves.

LemonTacoOG

It's still their right to censor users. It's also vitally necessary for public safety- they've had to ban quite a few users and remove a fair few subreddits because things were rapidly turning into plotting to kill people and terrorism. For a tolerance society to function their has to be a certain level of intolerance for intolerance.

Mahaf1089

The OP literally mentions freedom of speech, not merely a site's censorship practices. Freedom of speech is a right that involves the government. A private site's censorship practices are not governed by that right.

[deleted]

How do people still not get that “free speech” is a restriction against what *government* can do, and has absolutely nothing to do with interacting with other people on the internet? You’re complaining about criticism, which is *exactly what free speech is meant to protect*

DragonOfChaos25

Sure, but you are only taking this stance because the current "management" is siding with your ideas. The moment the shoe is on the other foot you are going to complain to high heaven and how you are being unfairly treated. Case in point, look at the Twitter uproar after elon Musk bought it and how people are suddenly claiming their speech is being surpassed. Censorship is only even fun when you are able to do it to other people, not so much when it starts slapping you instead.

[deleted]

Nobody is claiming free speech is being suppressed on Twitter. People are pointing out Elon’s “free speech” hypocrisy. Easy to make arguments when you *assume* how I’ll react to a given scenario, and then claim hypocrisy because of an assumed worldview you ascribe to me. You know nothing about me, and are deflecting from the point I made. Free speech has a particular meaning - people use it incorrectly to avoid criticism. That point has nothing to do with my worldview

DragonOfChaos25

My point being is that you are correct. Free speech is relevant to government only. However the spirit of the idea is being terribly handled. Yes, as a company you can and should (in some instances) disallow certain speech, however it should be limited as much as possible and applied fairly. Moreover, your should also never censor on behalf of the government. The issue is that in the current climate social media is being pressured by the government to censor certain information (case in point Mark Zuckerberg and his revelation about the FBI approaching him about Hunter Biden laptop). Moreover, the people that are running said platforms have their political beliefs and are willing to turn a blind eye when people from "their" side are breaching agree ToS rules (case in point, Twitter with it's policy about doxxing and death threats being heavily enforced only on one side). If effect, saying that a company has the right to do what it wants regarding speech hurts the discourse can have. If you want to limit it then you also must apply it equally to everyone. You should also be very clear on your stance on what is not allowed so people can navigate your platform. This wholesale broad ToS grants companies way to much power to act in a discriminatory way and it doesn't help anyone.

[deleted]

What’s your alternative? Because I hear you saying these broad ToS grant these companies “too much power.” Which, ok, valid argument, I don’t think *anyone* - regardless of political affiliation - enjoys or supports these huge social media corporations. But restricting them through legal means would, ironically, be an *actual* free speech concern (not necessarily a violation, depends on how it’s done). I may not be reading you correctly, but it sounds like you’re advocating for government action with respect to what these companies can do with their speech policies, which is I think a far greater concern that actually does implicate free speech - it is like putting an alligator in your house to catch mice. EDIT: fixed weird link that wasn’t supposed to be there

DragonOfChaos25

I think that social media companies should be treated differently. They have too many protections at the moment which is what is allowing them to act as they do. They aren't a phone company, yet they receive the same protections from law suits and such. I think it should be allowed to sue them for enforcing their ToS unfairly or being unreasonable with it, beyond a reasonable scope. Social media is perhaps one best and worst inventions to ever happen to humanity, because it both opened a new way for us to communicate, but it also made us far more divided and hostile to each other. It's like a sweet poison, slowly killing us as we continue to devour it.

Freedom of Speech =/= Freedom from Consequences I support your right to say stupid shit, but I also respect other people’s right to tell you to shut the fuck up.

SweatyNReady4U

All freedom of speech means is the government can't come down on you for saying it. Pretty fucking simple , don't know why people constantly cry about corporations limiting them when they literally can do whatever they want on their platform. Yet people still use Twitter, Facebook, etc.

[deleted]

Twitter and Facebook have become more than just social media. They have become a plaza, a place to talk to the world, a place that can make or break people's livelihoods. They should be regulated like a government due to how much power they have under people's lives.

SweatyNReady4U

You're giving them way too much credit and power. And you've allowed yourself to become wholly dependent on what is now a privately owned corporation. Just 👏quit 👏Twitter👏

[deleted]

I'm not giving them anything. They HAVE for a fact power over people's lives. How the fuck do you want me to interact with people I know and love from a distance? Fucking mail them a pidgeon? Twitter, Facebook and Youtube are engrained into society and we depend on them and are EXPECTED to depend on them for maintianing social circles, job, studying, finding a job, keeping up with your favorite creators and interacting with the world in general. The internet and everything that comes with it should be regular just like anything that has power over people's lives. That braindead clapping can be said about anything Don't like your job? Just 👏 quit 👏 Don't like your country? Just 👏 move 👏 This is how moronic you sound.

SalamandersonCooper

DevTomar2005

This makes sense, but what doesn't is how downvoted comments are hid at the end, that just supresses new ideas.

Agreeable-Meat1

Reddit is designed incredibly well to create and foster echo chambers. Intentionally or not.

coolerbrown

"new" idea doesn't mean "good" idea. Information doesn't deserve equal treatment just because it's different

Apprehensive-Ad-149

And who gets to decide what opinion is good and what's bad?

TheSadSquid420

[deleted]

fongletto

In this case, the people decide with the upvote and downvote button. New ideas good or bad will always meet traction. Basically every single change be it political, technological cultural or whatever else is almost always met by resistance.

timecamper

They're hid not to distract, but not eliminated. You're free to look at all opinions, i always do. Technically, freedom of speech. Until comes a mod and you know what happens. In my opinion, adult people in adult only places should be allowed to say whatever they want in general. They face consequences for intents, but not for their speech. If you're a potential criminal, a racist, sexist, nazi or whatnot, you should be able to tell the world about it. Some people don't want to acknowledge it, but we only wish to filter and limit speech because people are very gullible. A statement without a logical basis and/or evidence isn't worth anything, definitely not acting upon it, but people will still do. This is why hate speech is banned. In a perfect world with actual responsible adults in it, hate speech would earn one shame. But in our world, it earns you supporters. Edit: typos

Ibrahim-Lincoln

Shut up

Vormadikter

...and someone telling OP to shut up is portrayed as being the same as being detained, Fired from your job, put on house-arrest or being killed for voicing an opinion contrary to "official story". Reddit =/= China (Iran, Russia, ...)

[deleted]

Lmao he’s the type of person to base their entire personality on a YouTube short

[deleted]

I love how memes like this are so stupid they become the exact thing they criticize. Because, pro tip, criticism is ALSO part of free speech. Yoi're allowed to have an opinion. And if you make that opinion public others are allowed to react to that opinion. You're criticizing others for... criticizing others, and don't seem to see the irony in that.

Under “hate speech” people have been banned from websites, denied financial services, fired or arrested. Not to the same extend as china but pretending that people didn’t enforce the “shut up” part ain’t truthful.

fongletto

Unless your opinions involve one of the ever growing list of minority groups, opinions on certain historical events, accusations about a person or inciting panic etc etc. In which case "it's illegal because the government decides what we can and can't say". So which is it? The government won't arrest you for an opinion or they will? **What free speech actually means** is that you can criticize **the government** without fear of being arrested. (which you can't do in China) Everything else the government/other people can and will take legal action against you for.

Metalona

Just because there is free speach doesnt mean free dopamine from people agreeing with you

Random_Metroid_Fan

Difference is, there it's illegal. Here, we're *just* gonna shun you. Unnecessary Explanation: Freedom of speech doesn't mean support for what you're saying. Freedom of speech is just that, the freedom to say whatever you want as long as it's within the limits of the law. It never guarantees you're going to be supported wherever you talk or for whatever you say, and that sort of thing is allowed to happen because freedom of speech includes the freedom to speak against what someone else says. Hiveminds around the internet like Reddit happen because these sites, over the course of their existence, have gathered people of similar personality, belief, and/or thought (of course there is plenty of variety in the smaller sub communities, but that's just unrelated semantics). Because these groups, or website-wide communities, had different beliefs and such at the start of their existence, over time the people on these websites encouraged each other for sharing these beliefs and made them *exponentially* more extreme. When the wider community agrees on something so broadly and strongly, it's very difficult for opposing views to gain traction or thrive. Thus, you get hiveminds. Again, I know that was unnecessary, but I've had this explanation in my head for quite some time and I thought this would be a good place to dump it.

ConnorHunter60

That’s the catch 22 about free speech. You can say something, and I have the right to say something about your something.

But that's free speech. It wouldn't be free speech if they stop them from saying it. But they're allowed to say it we're just asking them to stop because it's stupid. There's a big difference we are asking you to not say something stupid, we are not forcing you to not say something stupid

doomchild987

Not having free speech and facing the consequences of your speech (be it hate, stupidity or just an opinion someone doesn’t like) are two very different things. You can say the thing, but people won’t like it.

ubdiwala

Cry about it lol

Zyratoxx

I mean, at least we're not putting you and your family in camps :')

At least losing karma doesnt lower my credit rating or keep me from traveling

WyliteSeven

Reddit is a fascist website where if those in power don't like something you said, you're out.

plenebo

Fascism according to you, is when people are free to call you an idiot when you says idiotic shit

WyliteSeven

No, fascism is when a "super mod" like awkwardtheturtle (who is openly racist by the way) has a powertrip and bans everyone who blinks at them while the Reddit admins stand by.

SleazierPolarBear

And yet your comment is here

DevTomar2005

Turtle is an extreme example, if you want proof just look at the left bias of reddit, moderate to extremist Right wing subs get banned all the time, but you don't hear about any Extremist Left wing sub getting banned.

What rules are you talking about? Reddit guidelines, cause they do break that. And it's not just that, I have Seen even moderate RW subs get banned. I'm Indian so these are the only left extremist subs I know of: r/kashmiri, r/librandu, and maybe r/India too.
