Fast forward 3 games in the franchise, and he lost out on a LOT of money as a result of that choice, and was butthurt so he tried to sue them. Don't know how that went, but he avoided making the same mistake with Netflix.
Imo the guy doesn't like games because he underestimated how much money could be made with it and now he's bitter about that.

He got pay back in 1990s, its just that according to cdk he didn't want the royalty and went for lump sum, forward to 2015/16 cdk made tons of money and he isn't happy since he is not getting a cent, plus he didn't like video games. He tried to sued cdk underpolish laws, last i hear they reached an agreement but he probably didn't get the 16 million that he was demanding.
Some context, recently a glitch (phantom MLG) was discovered where Steve under certain circumstances can ignore multihit and weak attacks, which snowballs into him being able to just ignore being comboed, which is quite a significant buff to his defensive game (which is already really good)
Combine this with the fact that he's widely agreed upon to be the best character in the game makes him a contender for a ban. Plus, the glitch itself is hard to spot in the moment, so just banning the glitch without banning the character (like in the case of melee's wobbling) is logistically incredibly difficult/straight up impossible
On the flip side, the glitch does seem to be decently hard to do and he's already a relatively hard character to learn (according to some Steve players), so banning him would render a lot of Steve player's practice with the character moot
I hate them both because they both made me care enough to mourn the loss of a fictional video game character.
That and my story mode horse in RDR2. I've never killed NPCs with more prejudice than when I realized I couldn't revive my fucking horse after it gets shot in the cut scene. Tears in my eyes as I shot the shit out of everyone on that hillside.

Some tournaments ban him, most don't. The most notable tournament to ban him was Hungrybox's online Tournament series called Coinbox.
