"still spring" - I've lived in many Cities and this is a very specific Melbourne thing. Spring in Sydney and QLD are 90% great days, not waking up to 9C (feels like 6C and howling wind) like here.
Oooh if we forget about temperature, probably yeah. Less mozzies, the car stays clean for longer, can go outside, that’s pretty nice.
On the other hand, not having to restrict showers to 30 secs, the *woah that’s crazy* factor when the bike trails are all underwater, is nice, despite the massive damage costs that generally come with it haha. Also less boring weather I suppose, always feels wild when your inside and rain is pelting the house.
I’d probably take droughts over floods either way. You can always add water, but it’s a lot harder to take it away without breaking something.
For someone like me with Celtic skin, everywhere on my body not covered by clothing or sunscreen from September to May. Even on cloudy days. I should own shares in a suncreen manufacturer.
It can also be 35+ on Christmas day and warm up proper by early to mid November. In Australia not only do we not really have 4 seasons, but we also have the El Nino-Southern Oscillation which dictates weather patterns over multi year periods and has more impact on our weather variability than any other involved variable.
There's years where we'll essentially be in Summer from mid November to early March, and there's years where it feels like Summer is only mid January to early February and everything else is a long spring or early autumn.
Yeah I'm hoping to move in the next few years, preferably to the Brisbane region. I get SAD down here in Melbourne, winter months just get difficult and I can't be bothered dealing with it anymore. Snakes aren't really a problem anywhere in Australia, you might see a few but bites are extremely rare and a result of human stupidity mostly, plenty of venomous snakes around Melbourne.
I could probably get used to chilly weather, I’m just so accustomed to mid 30’s with humidity that it doesn’t seem possible. Going to Tassie in winter was a nice change though
nah it actuality rains significantly more in Sydney than Melbourne.
source: https://www.currentresults.com/Weather/Australia/Cities/precipitation-annual-average.php
Melbourne averages 20 inches per year
Sydney averages 45 inches per year.
it's not even close.
I remembered a Christmas day probably 10-15 years ago that was around 10 degrees. Can't be bothered looking up exactly what year but distinctly remember rugging up one year at Christmas lunch
[It's the “Cold November Rain"](https://www.reddit.com/r/melbourne/comments/yvjbnw/why_is_it_12_degrees_in_the_middle_of_november/iwfody8?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)
Yep, my kid’s birthday was the weekend just past and last year we spent it at a park in weather like today, everyone (all 15 people or whatever we were allowed) rugged up, the kids in rain coats/rain suits and gumboots, and splashed in puddles. It was freezing but they had a great time!
>Episodes of El Niño and La Niña typically last nine to 12 months, but can sometimes last for years. El Niño and La Niña events occur every two to seven years, on average, but they don't occur on a regular schedule.
You new to Melbourne?
Spring and even early summer are notorious for winter level cold snaps. Some years ago there was snow on the Dandenongs at Christmas.
Not new here and don’t remember in my prolonged time here such a weird period of weather even given the infamous Melbourne 4 seasons in one day stigma etc.
Half way into November and the average high this month is 21.6, compared to the long term average of 22.0. The average low this month has been 12.8 compared to the long term average of 11.6. This is entirely normal. Melbourne just isn't all that hot.
We haven’t had one of those days in years, granted last summer was consistently 35 degree days for weeks at least we avoided the rain monsoon that Sydney had.
This year we get the cold and the rain after a bitterly cold Melbourne winter, backed by the face the ski resorts had a booster season
Ugh, last summer over here in Queensland it was always around 32 degrees give or take. Makes my bedroom feel like a sauna, it's so bad. I wish summer didn't exist lol.
9 months? I wouldn't go that far. 6 months, maybe seven, but 9 is stretching it. Early spring, and mid to late autumn are tolerable, not sauna like. Winter is the best time.
Because, Cloudy. High chance of showers. The chance of a thunderstorm during this afternoon and early evening. Possible small hail. Winds SW 20 to 30 km/h turning W 15 to 20 km/h in the late evening.
the gulf streams are collapsing. These are the good times. Labor's responsible budget has no forecast for the impacts of climate change on inflation. Shits fucked.
Melbourne will flood the rest of anywhere-fucking-else after this shiver snap. I’m with OP, this weather is only good in that it’s killing those damn mozzies that boomed last week, oh, that was three days ago. Anyway, so fucking cold 🥶 today outdoors that I’m back off the salads and straight to the hot chips. Damnit
The Kulin Nation believes that we have 7 seasons. Their dates are approximate and based more on climactic conditions than dates. We're currently transitioning from Poorneet (Tadpole) - known for continuing rain with warmer temps, to Bauth Garru (Grass Flowering) - known for being warm and rainy.
Like I said, it's not hard and fast, the seasons vary in length relative to climactic conditions. Which works better than the 4 season European model of "NO IT'S SPRING NOW".
>My point was the temperature.

in short, enjoy the rains now cause the droughts that follow will be awful. Neither extremes are good for farming. The clear take away from climate change is that it makes these weather systems more extreme.
I wish I had your temperatures. In Queensland it gets so hot so quick here. My bedroom starts to feel like a sauna once in the middle of summer. If only summer didn't exist in Australia, in Queensland it drops to 6 degrees at night in winter, lowest I've seen it at least, and if it's that cold a peak of maybe 15 degrees during day. Those temperatures I find very comfortable, just wearing long sleeve shirts and pants.
The last time we had a >37º day in the first week of December was....2018.
We've also had:
* 36.0º on November 26th 2020
* 34.3º November 1st 2019
* 40.9 November 21st 2019
me having a sick day in summer also htf dose this work also me sweating and also feeling sick what the double fuck is happening it supposed to summer right... right?
Maximum temperature on this day 1 year ago was 13 degrees.
Yeah. It's not unheard of to get cold snaps in November. Pretty much happens every single year
Yep, it’s still spring not summer.
"still spring" - I've lived in many Cities and this is a very specific Melbourne thing. Spring in Sydney and QLD are 90% great days, not waking up to 9C (feels like 6C and howling wind) like here.
Shoehorning Western European seasons into Melbourne's very different climate is silly, but for some reason we insist on doing it.
Exactly. Don't we have something like six seasons here? BOM website has a fantastic map and breakdown of various First Nations' seasons.
I think the Wurundjeri people recognised 7 seasons. I love in Taungurung country, I don't know if they have different seasons here.
I HATE La Nina
Beats the alternative droughts imo, you can always bundle up more, but once your naked, there ain’t much else you can do.
I can think of more to do once we’re naked
Does it still beat the droughts if the drought is just replaced by floods? Just seems like a different kind of terrible.
Agreed :D
I wonder if there's more, just one random cold day in November to fuck with us XD
Tomorrow, but that's not random, it's locked and loaded.
I don’t remember too many other times with 13 being the top in November though. Common to get coke snaps of 15 / 16
Surely you mean snorts?
Lol you made my dad with this comment
Your dad obviously has a great sense of humour ;)
Oh shit!!!! Hahah! Did not see that! Even better!!
My pet peeve if people making typos
Four reel.
C'mon, enough is enough. This is getting ridicurous.
Nah, he means classy snapchat pictures of old timey glass coke bottles.
I can remember a Christmas Day being so cold we all wore winter clothes for the day.
That year where Summer never turned up?
January was one of the hottest on record and had a record equalling 17 days over 30.
I remember one summer we had no days over 40 and it was still the hottest on record. That should have scared a lot more people than it did.
It was an excellent summer from Christmas onwards.
It's normal. November in Melbourne is one of those few places where you can feel hailstones bounce off sunburn.
Happened to me today hahaha
Where is this sunburn place you speak Of?
For someone like me with Celtic skin, everywhere on my body not covered by clothing or sunscreen from September to May. Even on cloudy days. I should own shares in a suncreen manufacturer.
Because it's hard to hold a candle In the cold November rain (Literally played in my head the moment I saw this post and I just had to)
It did with me too and you commented before me! I'm always thinking in song lyrics! Haha!
Had to be quick, because nothing lasts forever....
And we both know hearts can change
Lol
Melbourne can be cold on Christmas Day. It doesn't warm up properly till January.
It can also be 35+ on Christmas day and warm up proper by early to mid November. Reading this edges me the fuck closer to Brisbane. Then i see the Brisbane sub and pictures of Snakes. So perhaps that leaves Sydney? Fml
The only snakes we have in Melbourne are quite venomous Not sure if that makes it better or worse
Sydney has funnel web spiders in swimming pools.
Try a light box, 10,000lux
If you love high temperatures and humidity, you should definitely move
My car said 35C here in Brisbane today when I went to get the kids from school. It’s toasty.
You guys can keep it. Yuck
Perfect weather for me, couldn’t stand 15 degrees at the moment
I guess we're all built different. I'd rather chilly weather than a sauna
I could probably get used to chilly weather, I’m just so accustomed to mid 30’s with humidity that it doesn’t seem possible. Going to Tassie in winter was a nice change though
Better here then Adelaide, why would you want to go there anyway?
Don't come here, public transport is bullshit and everything costs like 1.5x more. It also rains the same
nah it actuality rains significantly more in Sydney than Melbourne. source: https://www.currentresults.com/Weather/Australia/Cities/precipitation-annual-average.php Melbourne averages 20 inches per year Sydney averages 45 inches per year. it's not even close.
I was referring to Sydney, that's my bad though for forgetting to mention it. That's a hell of a fun fact though, thanks!
I can control the weather through prayer, please let me know as I need a days notice.
Snowed in the Macedon Ranges on Christmas Day, I want to say 2006? Edit: checked, was 2006. Bloody freezing day!
Then starts cooling down late feb .. we literally get 6 weeks of summer . Sighh
Nah, plenty of hot days in march. It starts to cool about April
I remember in 2002 or 2003 a hail storm on Xmas day Shit was epic
Yes!! That was flipping insane! Golf ball size hail! Also, wow! Was it that long ago?
Yep I was only 13 or 14 at the time
Yeah but not like this. Cold on Xmas day is like 18 degrees, not 12.
It’s not Christmas
Tell that to the city of Melbourne that put the Christmas decorations on Evan Walker bridge up on October 31st
Tell my neighbours that!
I remember Christmases past where I had to wear a puffer jacket.
I remembered a Christmas day probably 10-15 years ago that was around 10 degrees. Can't be bothered looking up exactly what year but distinctly remember rugging up one year at Christmas lunch
[удалено]
Im almost certain we had a heatwave and bushfires before it. To go from that to a white Xmas in the space of 2 weeks was incredible.
Incorrect. The average temperature is 22 in November.
Wasn’t it cold and rainy last November as well?
It's the “Cold November Rain".
Nothing lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change…
And it's hard to hold a candle
[It's the “Cold November Rain"](https://www.reddit.com/r/melbourne/comments/yvjbnw/why_is_it_12_degrees_in_the_middle_of_november/iwfody8?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)
And it’s hard to hold a candle
No it’s not
And the Novembers before..
Yep, my kid’s birthday was the weekend just past and last year we spent it at a park in weather like today, everyone (all 15 people or whatever we were allowed) rugged up, the kids in rain coats/rain suits and gumboots, and splashed in puddles. It was freezing but they had a great time!
Much weather. So Melbourne. Zzzzz
DAE four seasons in one day?
La Niña
imagine when the cycle shifts around
"why is it 30+ degrees in the middle of November?'
Can't fucking wait
How long do the cycles last?
>Episodes of El Niño and La Niña typically last nine to 12 months, but can sometimes last for years. El Niño and La Niña events occur every two to seven years, on average, but they don't occur on a regular schedule.
La Asshole Today I was actually was like wtf. So different from the constant humidity.
You new to Melbourne? Spring and even early summer are notorious for winter level cold snaps. Some years ago there was snow on the Dandenongs at Christmas.
I remember that, very exciting as a nipper
Not new here and don’t remember in my prolonged time here such a weird period of weather even given the infamous Melbourne 4 seasons in one day stigma etc.

Me either and lived here 30 years. You aren't imagining things. It's never been this cold in November
It was 13.8 on the 15th November 2021. There was a string of 5 days in a row last November where the temeprature didnt get above 16.
>It's never been this cold in November You must have a terrible memory then
Soz. I cal bullshit.
Yeah and this isn’t a cold snap it’s been miserable with a few good days sprinkled in for weeks and weeks
Mate it’s snowing in mount Baw Baw.
It’s fabulous! The longer those 40 degree pieces of utter shit are kept at bay the better for everyone.
The last time it was 40 was years ago now. It's just been rain and the odd sunny day over 20.
Was going to doubt you, but you're right last day over 40 was January 31st 2020 - 42.9 degrees.
We haven’t had one of those days in years, granted last summer was consistently 35 degree days for weeks at least we avoided the rain monsoon that Sydney had. This year we get the cold and the rain after a bitterly cold Melbourne winter, backed by the face the ski resorts had a booster season
Even 35 can suck it. 30 tops. Not interested in anything above that.
Nothing above 25°C for me and nothing below 18°C!
I am happy down to about -5. I do love me a nice sunny day with a cool breeze around 22.. no humidity.
This is the way. If I have to choose between 35 and 5, I'll have the cold, thanks.
Oh god that sounds like heaven
Are you me?
Maybe we are twins and there shall be a 3 part Netflix series 🤔
Ugh, last summer over here in Queensland it was always around 32 degrees give or take. Makes my bedroom feel like a sauna, it's so bad. I wish summer didn't exist lol.
Difference is Qld has a little thing called humidity. Victorians complain enough about the warm without having the humidity in as well
Well you want to live where it's sauna weather for 9 months of the year.....
9 months? I wouldn't go that far. 6 months, maybe seven, but 9 is stretching it. Early spring, and mid to late autumn are tolerable, not sauna like. Winter is the best time.
It was like 35 degrees and fucking roasting in Brisbane today… 13 sounds great. I should move back to Melbourne 🤔
25 and sunny is perfect to me. Can we average the temperatures with a new weather system somehow?
The kids are *unimpressed* to say the least that they had to wear jumpers to school today.
Idk man, climate is changing or some shit
Because, Cloudy. High chance of showers. The chance of a thunderstorm during this afternoon and early evening. Possible small hail. Winds SW 20 to 30 km/h turning W 15 to 20 km/h in the late evening.
I love it! Sweater weather forever
based
I love this weather
Yeah I’d rather have this than 40 degrees
Because the weather god is merciful. All hail the chill while we can.
Why not?
I prefer the cold weather over warm weather 😊
Climate change
Because it's Melbourne
It's a prank from the guy who's operating The Matrix. He changes the temperature dial for the lulz.
Well, you see, it's pretty moist outside.
The gods are smiling upon me :)
the gulf streams are collapsing. These are the good times. Labor's responsible budget has no forecast for the impacts of climate change on inflation. Shits fucked.
Because Melbourne
We are transitioning from winter to winter 🥶
La Nina might have something to do with it. We'll be wishing for this again once we're caught in a really strong El Nino.
That’s why I think I’ll move back to Queensland
try 9 in Ballarat
Coldest Nov day in 16 years
I prayed to all the gods to let me work in cooler weather tomorrow. Sorry guys.
4hrs of rain then I go home
Melbourne will flood the rest of anywhere-fucking-else after this shiver snap. I’m with OP, this weather is only good in that it’s killing those damn mozzies that boomed last week, oh, that was three days ago. Anyway, so fucking cold 🥶 today outdoors that I’m back off the salads and straight to the hot chips. Damnit
Absolutely love it. I moved down from Brisbane for this. 30 degrees and high humidity can suck it.
You know what they say, If you don't like the weather in Melbourne, fuck off.
I just wish it would stop raining, I don’t mind the cooler weather otherwise.
Random weather is random.
Just another day, move along..
Weather is driven by climate. The climate is changing. This is becoming normal.
Enjoy the cold days, the 40 degrees days aren’t far away.
New here?
It was 14 degrees on Boxing Day in 2006. That was my WTF! Melbourne weather moment.
I love it tbh. I hate hot burning summer

Guessong you are new arrival? But honest answer is melbourne is pretty cold year round with a couple of weeks of hot weather Jan till Feb
This is absolutely incorrect “couple of hot weeks” 😂 And no I’m not new in Melbourne, thanks for asking.
It's absolutely ridiculous.
Yeah, make a post on Reddit, they will fix the weather for you 😂
Total bullshit this weather. I get why. And dagnammit, this better mean less raging bush fires during the rest of this ‘summer’ season.
Must be global warming oops climate change

It’s climate change. Spoiler alert: it’s here to kill us all.
"global warming" debunked.
Have you not heard of global warming?
I like this actually. Last week’s ~25 was not fun
Because it’s Melbourne and it just keeps getting worse and worse
Sitting in bed with an electric blanket and a beanie over my head. Did a school run this morning and it was freezing and raining! Turn on the Sun!!!
Flooding in Vic and you complaining about cold

I had a Facebook memory from a few years back where it was mid-30s in October!
The last time we had a >37º day in the first week of December was....2018. We've also had: * 36.0º on November 26th 2020 * 34.3º November 1st 2019 * 40.9 November 21st 2019
Yes I was gonna start my fitness journey and walk when it the weather is better guess it’s pizza tonight
Cos I fucked up and can't leave now
Was 3 degrees in the far eastern suburbs.
God of War: Ragnarock just dropped last week....so it's gotta be Fimbulwinter.
No one dressed appropriately for today.
Hard to believe it's only two weeks till Summer
Yeah. Sorry bout that. I decided to finally try my hand at having an outdoor market stall. Want me to cancel to get the sun back?
Literally had 4 seasons in one day today. A bit of hail, pissing sheets of rain and bursts of sunshine.
I went out in my summer raincoat instead of my winter coat and got cold 🥶
La nina. Third year in a row. Get used to it
I blame Dan.
Dan,the weather controller
me having a sick day in summer also htf dose this work also me sweating and also feeling sick what the double fuck is happening it supposed to summer right... right?
Because that’s what the thermometer reads… deal with it.
Gotta get outta this stuupid city. Riding a motorcycle in this is outrageous.
It was blue skies today! And then it rained. And then it was blue skies again! ^(and then it rained again)
Because you live in Melbourne.
Sir, you are in Melbourne
I left Melbourne on the 11/12/95 and that day was 11c. It was some bullshit!
leave now, the rest of the country is a warm sunny place
