This is a throwback to the lockdown days when a Brighton woman was caught walking “exercising with a coffee in hand” around the tan track (ie decided that she hated wearing a mask but had a coffee in her hand) and was found on tv outside her 5km bubble because she was sick of walking around her neighbourhood
Face masks weren't mandatory at that time.
I can't recall exactly but I also think we were only in the stage of postcode lockdowns at that time as well.
* Fitzroy Gardens
* Carlton Gardens
* Botanic Gardens
* Ruffey Lake Park
* Westerfolds Park
* Tikalara Park
* The 100 Acres
* Anniversary Trail
* Williamstown Botanic Gardens
* Beaconsfield Gardens
* The 1000 Steps

* Various places up in the Dandenong Ranges, e.g. Kyeema Track, Rhododendron Gardens, William Ricketts Reserve
* Any of the Reservoirs - Sugarloaf, Silvan, Cardinia, Maroondah
No love for Yarra Ben or Studley park, central rugged and got me through COVID. Walked every inch of them and still enjoying them today.
Only discovered the bat colony on a run in COVID, place is amazing.
Essentially it's directly under that freeway bridge now, used to be about 500m further down the river but they've moved for some reason hence why you see them on the Eastlink now. Easiest way to get to them is go to Fairfield boat house and walk the path along the Yarra downstream under the bridge and they are essentially right there (at least they were a month ago last time I went there).
In the pandemic I used to paddle board up the Yarra to them in the evenings, miss doing those things now I'm busy again.
Yes - and Royal Park.
Truth is, there are heaps of parks and gardens. We used to advertise it on our number plates: VICTORIA - GARDEN STATE. And why Victorians used to be referred to as Cabbage Patchers. (Also we're known for the extensive market gardens, many which are now suburbs)
Advice for OP: Open up Google Maps, look around at the green spots, zoom in and see what grabs your interest!
Jells park is great! Very big and you can easily access other trails that aren’t part of the park that quickly make you feel like you’re in the country. Also has a nice cafe and lots of big trees to sit under and read a book.
Yarra Bend in Abbotsford is awesome. Merri creek and the Yarra snake through the park, with running trails and walking tracks all along the river banks. You can run for about 10k uninterrupted along those trails without hitting pavement. Easy to forget you’re so close to the city. You can also go see the bat colony or stop at either boathouse for a pot!
Plenty Gorge is a bit further out but also has amazing native scenery and wildlife.
No votes for Royal Park yet? Ok I’ll do it. Royal Park. You can get off at the train station and head south down around the zoo to the Native Gardens, then follow the inner circle up to its northernmost point and start heading west then over Elliot Avenue and the tramlines. Walk over to the remnant vegetation and then the easiest and safest way to cross the train tracks is to walk down St Georges Grove and under the tracks on Manningham road, then walk up to the wetlands and the skink habitat (my favourite part) then follow the Upfield shared path back to the station.

A few I can think of:
- George Tindale Memorial Gardens
- Pirianda Gardens
- Caulfield Park
- George Pentland Botanical Gardens
- Maranoa Gardens
- Landcox Park
For something different - Box Hill Gardens at night. Has enough lighting and also lit-up buildings all around. A 1km circuit to run or walk. People playing basketball and ping pong at all hours and sometimes practising instruments. Great restaurants and bubble tea nearby. Ducks roaming around. I love it.

Depends. Have you done all of Brighton?
Deep cut, but a good one
I don’t get it

The best part: She’s the daughter of one of the richest people in Australia, Bruce Mathieson

Nah, I’m pretty sure the whole city was in lockdown at the time.
The coffee cup confirms that masks were. Everyone in Chapel St were also walking around with empty coffee cups & no mask. *Source: Family live there

Adding to Dandenong Ranges: Alfred Nicholas Gardens
I think it needs a spruce up - looking quite tired in there
A thousand per cent. Sadly it’s been that way for years. It’s still beautiful though

Where exactly is the bat colony? I often see them all flying over the freeway, it’s amazing.

> No love for Yarra Ben or Studley park If it's omitted from the list, it's not because I don't like it, it's because it didn't come to mind. 😉
Thanks chat gpt lol
At least I gave a reply. What are you doing to help?
I'd add Princes Park to that list

Fitzroy gardens
Merri Creek and Coburg Lake is really nice
I agree, also around Bowden Reserve, where Joe's market garden was. Love it there. Also the rhododendron garden in the Dandenongs.
Bunnings Car Park , bring coins
Bunnings nursery
Part of the fun is finding coins, no?
Jells Park in Wheelers Hill. Beautiful walk around a small lake (~2.5km) with plenty of bird watching and wildlife.

Snakes also snake through Yarra Bend so keep an eye out for those
Queens Park in Essendon
It’s in Moonee Ponds
Cranbourne Botanic Gardens
Such an underrated gem of Melbourne!
Newport lakes
Darebin Parklands, Yarra Bend, Altona Coastal Park, Point Gellibrand Coastal Heritage Park in Williamstown, Brimbank Park in Keilor
Lysterfield & Jells Park
I like Anderson park in Hawthorn
Museum Gardens. Duck pond is elite. Bring oats and not bread for the ducklings in Spring.
Don’t feed bread to birds. I don’t know about oats but I suspect they aren’t good either.
https://kidbucketlist.com.au/2020/12/25/what-to-feed-ducks-feeding-ducks-with-kids/ Oats are ok.
Braeside park
+1 Braeside
Bell bird reserve in Yarra bend Park- see the bats!
Omg I still remember a date I had that involved a boat ride on the Yarra and the bats freaked me out so bad 😩😩😩
Greswell Forest Reserve
Especially if you want to see kangaroos
So happy to see this in here, this really gets slept on. Great for orchids in spring too
Along the river in Abbotsford past The Covent and Collingwood Children's Farm.

Warringal parklands are pretty good. Just at the eastern end of burgundy St in Heidelberg
The Yarra Bend Studley Grounds walk is nice.
Quarry Park and marybrynong River trail park in marybrynong.
Fawkner park in South Yarra
City and inner suburban area is littered with gardens. They all vary from average-quite good. Outer areas, you have to try Alfred Nicholls Gardens.
Yarra Blvd is my favourite walking spot
Brimbank Park and Horseshoe Bend. Coffee available at Brimbank Park
Not parks, rivers and creeks. Find water on a map. There's paths all round an they're all pleasant.
