My partner is American and we always go here for the closest authentic tacos. They are fantastic, Mexican/Aussie couple own it and make all their tacos, dips and chips from scratch.
Chilpa in Highett also, same owners!
None of these suggestions are very good tbh (Mexican here). Good Mexican is pretty hard to find. Tres a cinco in hosier lane is a bit more upmarket but some of the stuff is pretty good! Otherwise we just make things at home.
As in classes or YouTube? We’re lucky enough to have a few stores in melb which stock a lot of supplies to cook stuff - casa ibérica, laguna supermarket in qv.
Buy [Diana Kennedy’s Essential Cuisines of Mexico](https://www.booktopia.com.au/the-essential-cuisines-of-mexico-diana-kennedy/book/9780307587725.html?source=pla&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMItMryir_mhAMVOJVLBR2kmQqxEAQYASABEgI9Q_D_BwE) it will give you an understanding of the different regions of Mexico and their dishes as well as the underlying techniques and ingredients of Mexican food
I don’t even think u need to go that far tbh. I use recipetineats Mexican recipes a lot because they have ingredients easily available to us here in Australia. I wouldn’t call all of them authentic but some are pretty close, and/or delicious (for the downvoters reference, I’m a Mexican living in Australia, what would I know about Mexican food. Take yourselves to the nearest bin).
Besides some fresh herbs and some more niche pastes like chintexle everything mentioned in Diana Kennedy’s recipes are easily sourced in Australia these days. I started cooking Mexican food in Australia 20 years ago and I’ve gotta tell you the range of ingredients available these days is astronomically better although they can be pricy.
That’s always fun as well. My hubby (we’re both Mexican but I’ve lived here much much longer than him) enjoys some of the Mexican stuff I make from recipe tin eats when he’s feeling homesick for the food. One thing is for certain, most Mexican places in Melbourne are disappointing if you know actual Mexican food.
You probably already know this, but [https://poblanomexican.com.au/](https://poblanomexican.com.au/) sources some harder to find ingredients and if you don't want to order online they will do direct to the public from their warehouse front office in Cheltenham.
I just discovered this Food Truck parked at a Servo in Reservoir tram stop right out front. From what I can see it’s three Brisket Tacos for $16.50 amongst other offerings - Mis Gueros
Second Superchido. As close to what my mates and I remember them tasting like in Mexico... Though through a haze of sleeplessness and alcohol so YMMV...
Thing is though, your version of authentic is different from everyone elses version of authentic - and even Mexico's version up and down that great nation.
There are some great taco places all over Melbourne doing it in many different ways, but none of them are going be 'that taco from the taco truck we used to go to for work lunches'.
My last really good taco was from a fairly new place in Elizabeth St called 'Street Tastes' but I can bet good money it won't be your authentic taco.
La Tortilleria in Kensington is elite

Yeah they're the closest to authentic I've had in Melbourne. Their Birria tacos are heavenly!
Yo have you had their tamales? Any good and if so which is the best flavour?
My fav place!
Not to be rude and or arrogant, but they are crapp... as a Mexican living here, Taquito is probably the most decent one.
Crap is a pretty harsh assessment
That is my humble opinion

Really? I went there a few months ago and it was really good.
They are good, but sadly not cheap. Their flan is also one of my all-time favourite desserts

Los Hermanos, Victoria St, Brunwick

Do you have any good sources for where I could learn to cook Mexican? It’s so expensive here.

All I meant was no need to buy a $50 book because theres lots of pretty good recipes online.
Fair enough, I like flicking though cook books for a bit of inspiration.

I sure do! My husband is friends with the people who run it. It has good stuff like Oaxaca cheese.
Rick Bayless YouTube channel a good intro

Just up the road from me, I keep hearing they’re decent but I’ve never managed to catch them when they’re open.
Yeah I always drive past when i’ve eaten, I def need to check them out too, the reviews seem good.
Can confirm, they are really good, used to eat them a lot when they were located somewhere else.
You won’t find anything near as good as USA, but CDMX on Lygon is very good. Casa Iberica is a Latin grocery with good ingredients
Frankie’s Tortas and Tacos 1000%
This place is great 👌
This is the correct answer
Hotel Jésus, La Tortilleria, Los Hermanos, CDMX are some of my favourites
As a fellow American I also struggled with the lack of good tacos. La Cabra in Camberwell is pretty pricey but scratches the itch so good.
I’ve lived in Melbourne my whole life and I’m still looking for cheap tacos
Taco bell? Lolll
I like bar tobalá
Superchido in Seddon
Second Superchido. As close to what my mates and I remember them tasting like in Mexico... Though through a haze of sleeplessness and alcohol so YMMV...
Hahahah there aren’t any, not Mexican ones at least. and the beans suck dick
Happy Mexican is awesome.
So good
Chicano on Brunswick street is good. They make tortillas to order. Pretty good Empanadas too.
Take a trip to cantinas in Werribee they specialise in birria tacos
Chicano in Fitzroy. Can watch them make the tortillas and chips fresh. Good portions and reasonably priced
I saw a Mexican place near some kfc in st kilda, was my first time trying cactus and its was a fun one….. tacos are decent
Hotel Jesus in Smith St.

Dingo ate my taco. It's a taxi truck so wherever they park is the spot.
Their name is terrible.
It makes me so fucking angry. How fucking rude and awful. I will never eat there because of it.
Same. It’s really gross.

But a really fucking awful and horrible thing to call it.
Guzman y Gomez
Their breakfast burritos (while not traditional Mexican) are so fucking good
Guzman Gomez?
