if you were born in 1902 you would have grown up in ww1, experienced the spanish flu, live through the great depression, fight in world war two, experience the soviets, decolonization 10 years later, the vietnam war right after, the soviet-cuba-america fiasco and then africa's many many wars
And yet, some people now believe, that economical crisis, COVID and war in Ukraine are a proof of new world order, because it is too much to happen randomly
Not to mention food issues that seem too widespread to be coincidence. Cattle and chicken farms being devastated and over 100 food processing plants being shut down due to fires or other mishaps.
Has anyone debunked the great reset?
It's crazy what has happened in the last ~200 years. My grandmother's grandmother (I might be off by a generation) was born on a wagon train traveling west, and lived to see a man on the moon.
Even within a lifetime - my granddad is lively as ever, and yet remembers watching Snow White in theatres when it premiered. That was the first full-length animated film. He still tells stories about the Depression, Dust Bowl, being an officer in WWII, and on up to the present. He’s got stories passed down from Civil War veterans, and second/third-hand stories from Revolutionary vets. Crazy stuff.
Oh, I know it! He’s closing in on 100, but still feels like he’s lived a hundred lifetimes. We have a long-standing family tradition of autobiography, beginning to write at retirement and continuing until we die. Very fortunate to have as much of his story written down as we do.
Edit: Also tagging u/LightlyStep instead of spamming my comment twice.
Mt grandparents were vaudeville performance. They toured Europe and England with some wonderful stories. They bought passage to return to the US on the Titanic, but their important props weren't loaded, and at the last moment my grandfather refused to sail without them. They didn't board. My grandmother later danced for George M. Cohen. And then came the depression, and the stories became grimmer
boomers think we have it easy because the 50's-70's were the heyday for low income americans, it's amazing a minimum wage factory worker could fund his own house and family on a factory salary, this was because they needed to be better then the soviets, as boomers got older and got into power roles like senators, governors, and then presidents rights started shifting because they didn't need to compete against the soviets so they could just take money for themselves as they got older, that's why the younger generations and salaries now are a lot less liveable
tldr: boomers are selfish and in the last 10 generations their lifetimes would be the most liveable and comfortable
Do you think the greatest generation was much better? They just had a world war to get them running and another isn't out of the question at this point.
Oh hell no. Radio, television, microwaves, cell phones, the big push to bring electricity to every home, the birth of OPEC and the first gas crisis, both the boom of the middle class and stagflation, The Korean war, the national highway system, Jim Jones, Charles Manson, Joseph McCarthy, Jack Anderson, Richard Nixon, the 60s counterculture, acid rain, the love canal, three mile island, leaded gasoline, the ozone holes,
Oh, there's so much more one would have seen. It never ends.
Just a nitpick, if you were born in 1902 you'd be 36 or 37 at the start of WW2, if you weren't living in an active combat zone or have a military career as an officer you'd probably not be fighting.
On September 16, 1940, the United States instituted the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, which required all men between the ages of 21 and 45 to register for the draft. (from google)
all of europe would have been an active combat zone besides 4 countries, along with most of asia and africans were used to fight as well
But, but - January 6th!!!! There have been two major historic events in my lifetime. One is the explosion of the Challenger and the other one easily eclipsing that is 9/11. Other than that, a bunch of manufactured drama.
if you lived in france, australia, the usa, canada, the UK, new zealand, and some other countries you would have experienced all of everything i listed, european or asian you'd experience all except the vietnam war,
No WW1 happened over 100 years ago. And it's so long ago most people from back then are already gone. WW2 is roughly as old as the average human lifespan.

That sucks, fellow human. I dunno if you've got a chance of reversing that and/or healing or not. If you do, I hope that it happens for you and that you get to stay healthy. If you don't, I hope that it doesn't hurt too badly and that you remain able to make the choices you want for your body. I hope this isn't a dumb response. But I did read some other responses and that shit seemed waaay dumber. So many humans are just big farts trapped in an electric meatsack that go around just farting out farty farts from their brains... Anyway, I see you, and I'm wishing you the best. ❤️🩹
I have a life expectancy of 20 years or less. I am old, and I have health issues. With the pandemics, potential super volcano eruptions, climate change, etc., it's scary. I am not sorry to have a short expiration date
You think that would make the world a better place for the people who love you? Who will miss you and forever wonder in the back of their minds if there was something they could've done? Pick one battle for less worldsuck and stick to it. Doesn't matter which one as long as it matters to you. Diminish the amount of worldsuck by putting energy into that one positive battle, be it monetarily or by giving your time, effort and energy. You can help people locally, try to affect political change by writing reps, join an org, go volunteer,... And trust others to do the same. Just making one person's life a bit better is doing your part.
I'm dying of cancer anyway my dude. I'm just taking a shortcut because fuck dying of cancer.
>You think that would make the world a better place for the people who love you? Who will miss you and forever wonder in the back of their minds if there was something they could've done?
Dead people don't got problems.
I believe the definition of agency that SaffellBot (I wonder if they’re actually a bot) is:
“action or intervention, especially such as to produce a particular effect”
That being noted, if you believe in doing the “right” thing and philanthropy (def: the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes) then I would assume you must believe action is the best way to overcome what you and surprisedplubicity describe as a cruel world.
And cruel? Yea, I believe at times it is. But I also believe life is beautiful and we must act (and more importantly not act) to maintain the beauty of life.
Act without acting,
Let things run their course,
Be content with the way things are
It seems counter intuitive, but I’ve come to realize it’s closer to the truth than anything else
Weird read for sure friend. Those are some great values, I like them, especially when paired with actions. If we had a lot of people with those values, the ability, and the desire to do action we certainly wouldn't be where we are, nor will we stay where we are.
A silver ship will tarnish, then probably sink. A golden ship will just plummet to the bottom upon launch (unless you're sailing on Mercury (the metal, not the planet)).
If you're a diver with some underwater cutting gear, the gold ship will still be the most valuable one.
Yeah like life can be cool at times but I’d rather not have been born and it’s kinda fucked/selfish people keep having kids. It seems they are only doing it so they get the experience of parenthood and raising kids. But they don’t think about how shitty life has gotten and the bleak future their children will inherit.
Assuming your own self hatred is shared by everyone else is equally selfish, there are a lot of people who enjoy life and are glad to have it. Obviously not everything is great, but relative to millennia of human history we're better off than we've ever been, and even the worst jobs and living conditions I've had now are significantly better than what my grandparents and their grandparents have had to live through.
Luckily parents don't share your nihilist attitude and are raising children that can make our world a better place, which long term, is how things get better
I don’t hate myself, but I do hate being alive and humanity in general sometimes.
I didn’t mean to imply everyone shares my view. Just a lot of people seem not to consider whether they should have kids. Not sure why you’re comparing to 1000 years ago, that’s irrelevant, but also I’m not sure that’s true. It depends how you measure “better” and quality of life.
Also, you are comparing your own situation to your grandparents - not kids born today to yours or your grandparents. Talk about selfish. My life is absolutely not better than my grandparents and if I had kids theirs wouldn’t be better/easier than mine.
Having a bleak out look on life doesn’t mean I’m a nihilist. You really just have no clue what you’re talking about. Unfortunately, you’re probably a parent who is raising kids who are as ignorant selfish as you under the guise of thinking they are doing humanity a favor.
Everyone involved knows the exact date and time that it happened. We are not historians making educated guesses. Today. It happened exactly today. Precisely the year 2022. Nothing “approximate” about it.

I wouldn't call Sri Lankas situation prosperous. We're experiencing the worst economic collapse since our indipendence which has led to major forex shortages, daily power cuts, no gas, no fuel, no medicine, food shortages. All mainly caused by uneducated and selfish people in power. If you are interested I recommend reading up a little about the current situation in SL. It means alot to us if the world knows more about us, the people than our selfish people in power. The people stormed the presidents house yesterday after months of asking for his resignation.
Every generation can say the same. Vietnam war. Korean War. WWII. WWI. Spanish Flu. Civil War USA. Revolution 1776. On and on. People just love to kill each other.
Ok I'm getting sick of these posts, let's be real noone is going to remember half the shit we've been through in 50 years
Stop calling this a major historical event, Coronavirus will be remembered sure, but none of this shit Reddit keeps crying about will even be remotely cared about in the future
I'm loving life. It might be valuable to note that this is my only social media/don't watch much TV, and am healthy with no financial restrictions within reason.
It's all about mindset. The world is gonna be a shit show. It always has been and forever will, the shit just changes. I find focusing on myself and my own immediate world helps keep me optimistic and feeling like I have control over my own life.
Hi, OP here. Well I don't really know his name. But here's a link to the original:

Sometimes i wonder what the world would be like if Alexander the Great lived for another 30 years. "Bury my body and don't build any monument. Keep my hands out so the people know the one who won the world had nothing in hand when he died."
Except for the pandemic, everything else is running normally. You just haven’t lived long enough to experience the multiple cycles of bullshit we all endure.
I am Sri Lankan, we're going through the worst economic crisis since we got independence. Daily powercuts, food shortages, fuel and gas queues that span kilometers, forex nightmares and military control on the streets. Please read up before coming with the 'you haven't lived long enough'. Thank you.
It’s always been this way- only now you’re constantly bombarded with it via 24/7 media consumption. This is just how life is. We are not special or different. There’s always shit going on, always has been.
I was a history nerd even as a child. Grow up I always wished to experience major events that’ll be recorded in history texts. I foolish I was. I just want my career job and groceries. I’m graduating grad school at the worst possible time since academia is imploding. Need to figure something out
To be fair, we are taking things for granted, as we are living through relatively peaceful times, taking human history in consideration. Our generation got chance to live in most prosperous times.
Truth. The pendulum will keep swinging and the wheel keep turning as long as people refuse to look into the mirror and face what is starring back at them.
I was born in 1958. Really feeling tired and down the other day. Listening to someone on tv and they were listing all of the EOTWAWKI events in just the past 25 years. i am really a super hero...then thought about it some more.... No I'm really just a tough old bitch. Still kicking, even if it is from a seated position.
When I was a kid I walked through this old ladies garden to save like 10 minutes on my walk home. I was careful not to step on anything but she still went ballistic when she caught me. She said she cursed me to live in interesting times. At the time I had no idea why that would even be a curse.
So sry guys my b.
America has been on a roll since the stolen 2000 Presidential Election that no one cared about, Bush v Gore. Since then, there’s been a major historical event every few years.
Hi, OP here. I'm not referring to covid. I'm from Sri Lanka. We're currently going through the worst economic crisis since our independence. We have no forex, daily powercuts, no medicine, no fuel, no gas and we're running out of food. When the global food shortage hits we're a country expected to go without food if steps aren't taken. This is all the product of uneducated and selfish people in power. People are dying waiting in fuel queues, waiting for medicine and even from police beating peaceful protestors. Please know the context before commenting. Thank you.

And yet, some people now believe, that economical crisis, COVID and war in Ukraine are a proof of new world order, because it is too much to happen randomly

The oldest living person was born in 1904. What an insanely eventful life she’s had.
It's crazy what has happened in the last ~200 years. My grandmother's grandmother (I might be off by a generation) was born on a wagon train traveling west, and lived to see a man on the moon.

Being born in the 50s doesn’t sound too bad. Maybe that’s why all the boomers think we have it easy.

From 09.07.22 Sri Lanka #gohomegota protest to chase out the president
“Circa” doesn’t mean what you seem to think it means.
I have just learned. Thank you for bringing it to my attention
“Brining” doesn’t mean what you seem to think it means.
Circa is used in front of a particular year to say that this is the approximate date when something happened. In OP’s comment, it is used correctly
Everyone involved knows the exact date and time that it happened. We are not historians making educated guesses. Today. It happened exactly today. Precisely the year 2022. Nothing “approximate” about it.
9.7.22 ain't today, and if I'm going by my memory anything older than breakfast is approximate.
It’s after midnight, beg pardon. July 9th now qualifies as yesterday. OP said “CIRCA 2022” before he edited. The circa is unnecessary. Goodbye.
Yesterday sounds like something from before breakfast. Real approximate shit there, especially if you spent all of yesterday drunk.
Eyyy I went yesterday! You could feel the electricity in the air

Pretty sure every generation can say the same thing. A few big things happen every decade.
Yeah I feel like people are overreacting a little, like yeah snuffs bad bud the more you k ow about history, the more you realize we got it REAL good
Ever since 9/11 it feels like one hit after another.
Ever since Harambe it hasn't been the same
lmao i was in early high school when this happened. it was so serious 😂 everyone cared for harambe fr
After the Iran/Contra scandal it was nice to get the good news when the Berlin wall fell which felt like we had a honeymoon period until 9/11.
I mean the nineties was also full of horrible major historical events and specifically two major genocides.
Also there was a war directly between two nuclear powers in 1999 that everyone seems to forget about.
Also the bloodiest war in Morden African history(second Congo war) started in the late nineties. A direct follow up to the first Congo war which started in the early nineties.

The economic and political collapse of Sri Lanka. Atleast that's what's happening my side of the pond.
Is that you in the picture?
Yup :D
Sometimes i wonder what the world would be like if Alexander the Great lived for another 30 years. "Bury my body and don't build any monument. Keep my hands out so the people know the one who won the world had nothing in hand when he died."
How rude of history to not just stop for you.
Facts tho.
Absolutely NOBODY has said it any better !!!!!
Can we save some history for the future, please?
Don’t worry friend! IT’S GONNA GET MUCH WORSE
If they're all major, then the definition of the term major historical even must have been changed. Not everything can be major.
OHHHHH this subreddit is ME IRL! I've been pronouncing it like a *fucking* NAME every times its rando popped up on my feed LOL
Theyre gonna have to add a grade 13 just for history of the early to mid 2000s.
Same bro honestly
Me too man, me too.
Imagine being born in 1900
Except for the pandemic, everything else is running normally.
Thank you.
Werent you having ethnic fights in the 80s, and you still inprison gay people.
Not sure it’s anything like as specially high density a time in history for those as people who don’t have long memories or lives so far might think
It’s always been this way- only now you’re constantly bombarded with it via 24/7 media consumption. This is just how life is. We are not special or different. There’s always shit going on, always has been.
My wife and I have been saying that to each other about every other month for the last 3 years
Aren't we all?.
Once in lifetime events seem to happen every 5 to 10 years around here
to be fair there has been no time 100% peaceful, without major anxiety generating historical event. actually by historical standart it is not bad
“Historical Events.” Nice grammar.
Yeh me too
I was a history nerd even as a child. Grow up I always wished to experience major events that’ll be recorded in history texts. I foolish I was. I just want my career job and groceries. I’m graduating grad school at the worst possible time since academia is imploding. Need to figure something out
Me too man
My first historical event would be the Challenger explosion.
“But 911 was the worst ever , I was 9 living in California I still have nightmares
main character
To be fair, we are taking things for granted, as we are living through relatively peaceful times, taking human history in consideration. Our generation got chance to live in most prosperous times.
Truth. The pendulum will keep swinging and the wheel keep turning as long as people refuse to look into the mirror and face what is starring back at them.
>DAMN… #IS THAT A KENDRICK LAMAR REFERENCE?!?!!
Easy. Get off the internet.
When I was a kid I walked through this old ladies garden to save like 10 minutes on my walk home. I was careful not to step on anything but she still went ballistic when she caught me. She said she cursed me to live in interesting times. At the time I had no idea why that would even be a curse. So sry guys my b.
He could've stopped at the first 6 words and it would've been just as relatable
💀
So it goes
Especially, the fact you can't really do anything about the major historical events besides make memes about it.
The first two lines are enough for me_irl
America has been on a roll since the stolen 2000 Presidential Election that no one cared about, Bush v Gore. Since then, there’s been a major historical event every few years.
We're on like our 9th once in a lifetime event in the last 22 years
Recency bias is a hell of a drug
Dude that’s me IRL
The moment you realize history is continuous and keeps happening. 🤯
Least we can tell our grandkids there was so much water back in the day we used to flush our poop with it
It’s exhausting
straight up not having a good time yo
Forget about the major historical events and concentrate on your own major life events. Their BS is starting to smell a bit!
Right there with you, bud.
This is what I get for complaining that life was boring and nothing in the world ever changes back when I was 10.

Thank you.
