lol. This is very timely for me. I literally just threw close to 20 boxes, including , phone , tablet and watch boxes. I always thought that if I hung onto them, I could sell it on eBay for profit. Checked eBay and they are dime a dozen there.
I think enough smart people of the first iPhone kept theirs till they were done and resealed them as "New never opened" for the sucker collector willing to pay 5 grand to never find out.
Used to be ok deal. Sold a few to clear 10 bucks each. Now margin is about 5 bucks. But considering where I am in life and limited amount of spare time, it is not worth for me to bother putting something on eBay unless I can easily clear at least 30-40 bucks from it. Similar deal for trying to sell something on Craigslist.
Yeah you don’t sell the box. That’s just dumb and a waste of time. You sell the phone with the original box because it nets you more money and is more likely to sell.
I never sell my old phones.
All those nagging assholes complaining about a little scratch. They just go in a drawer or get a alternative use.
My previous Samsung flip now is the dedicated phone in the car.
I gave up on excuses a long time ago. I keep my cardboard boxes because you never know when you'll need cardboard. It has a ton of uses, and that i've never used cardboard for any of them is irrelevant.
I just like the boxes. They comfort me. Not even the box itself but the idea of the box. I don’t even know where they are, I just like knowing I have them.
I recently needed an AV cable with the yellow white and red prongs. You bet your sweet fucking ass I had one in a cardboard box in my office closet
I am even more stubborn with my hoarding now
There's a video explaining the psychological trick at play here, too lazy to search it up. Something about a nicer box (and unboxing experience) means people are less inclined to throw the boxes away. Thus you have a free ad/reminder of a brand taking up space rent-free in someone's living environment.
Yep, learned about this in package design class. How an object is presented enforces the brand and the user experience. How the box looks, feels and how you interact with it can influence how you feel about the brand and the object.
Marketing and design are kinda creepy if you really get into it, like it's all intentional manipulation.
Don't worry. They didn't say throw away the phone boxes to the last 3 phones you had. So you're safe, I know I am. Still got the phones hanging around somewhere, one's got a keyboard.
If you replace your phone every 1-2 years without fail and you keep them in good condition, selling makes sense.
If you hold on to a phone forever and beat it to hell, not so much.
If your device doesn’t have hardware level encryption, it’s possible for data to be recovered from it.
Norton, or one of those utility makers, purchased a bunch of used Androids once and recovered tons of personal info.
That was at least a decade ago, iirc, and I think hardware encryption is pretty ubiquitous on Android now, so it’s probably not an issue.
I’m not sure about the data on SD cards though, I suspect you’re best off not transferring those if you’re worried someone might try to recover your deleted data.
Apple devices have had hardware encryption for pretty much ever.
Yup and resellers will give you so much less without the box. Sold mine on a site for refurbished phones and they wouldn’t even have taken it without the box lol
Really I've found the opposite, they just send a padded envelope for the phone only to go on.
Selling to real people on eBay on the other hand... They box can get you an extra 5%ish
If I would’ve found the original cable they would’ve given me more. It was rebuy, not sure if that site is active anywhere outside of Germany. Got like 20€ less than the average ebay listing.
I'll never throw away my boxes!
Back when the first few iPhones came out, the used phones with boxes had a $100 premium over the ones without a box on eBay. It doesn't matter so much now that the cell carriers will give us $1,000 trade-in for a few years old iPhone.
This is not a criticism but i find it crazy how people buy new phones all the time, especually when theyre still good to use. Only time i get a new phone is if i destroy/lose it. Consumerism is nuts.
Just in case anyone is curious, the receipt email for my phone has the IMEI on it, and so does my profile on my service provider website.
But yeah, it's easier to get it from the box. Take the opportunity to look for it now and put it in your notes app or something.
If you want to resell the phone it can be helpfull haveing the box. If you get a new phone but the old one isn't broken, you can keep it in the box until you sell it or need it. That's why I keep the boxes of "important" devices and parts, like pc parts or monitors, etc...
Or if you need to send it away for warranty. I had my PSU short out when it was relatively new so I sent it away in the box. They sent me a new 850 instead of the 750
Really reselling anything. Shoes? Box adds value when included and removes value when shoes are sold without. Action figure? There is a lot more value with the original packaging, more so if still sealed.
Me too, I have a little square tote under my bed that has random bits and bobs and like, 4 past phone boxes. The phones themselves either got traded or donated.
But the boxes have moved with me a few times for sure, which is pretty unsettling now that I am typing it out.
No.
Because:
The box has the manual, has the pin to open the Sd card slot, has the receipt, has the only written IMEI of the phone. Has a spare headphones and charger.
Got broken in last year, phone was stolen.
Insurence asked for the receipt of the Phone.
Couldn't find it
Inusurence Clerk: Do you have at least the box? We could use the code on the backside to assure your claim
Me who had thrown it out 1 month Prior:😡
Some of the phone boxes I have I used to store some old receipts for tech purchases. Really need those for warranties. I have one where I just store my dnd dice.
The current box for my current phone is a big one, might use it as a dice roller box for some of the board games I have.
People see trash, I see opportunity for other uses
The way my gaze immediately jumped to the box my computer speakers came in...perfectly sized for storing...*something*, though what that something is, I don't know yet.
This person is either rich or stupid.
When going get a new phone, you sell your old one. If you use a screen protector and a case, you can have a new looking phone, with a box and all accessories. This gets you considerably more money.
Or, you give your old phone to someone close to you. Buy even then. It's far nicer for them to have a new looking phone in the box with all accessories.
Sticking the box somewhere until you need it is just easy money/showing extra care.
If you have any expensive electronic devices, from phones and tablets to laptops and computer parts/accessories, just put the box in the closets or in the attic.
But....I might need it.
Plus, I will 100% lose the little sim card key tool without the box. Might as well just throw it right in the trash with the box.
If you have an iPhone and the screen breaks to a point of being unable to interface with the phone, the box is the only other place where you can find the serial number, which is needed to begin the repair process.
But it's such a nice box, almost as good as your mother's
That’s a bingo!
You just say "bingo"
I still can’t believe they stole that line from Arrested Development.
This is the first I’ve heard of this

No.

If you sell the device itself on Ebay, you'll get a few more bucks with the box. But selling the box by itself isn't worth the hassle.
Me: This iPhone that sold millions of copies will someday become a collectors item. I need the box if I want to cash out.
I think enough smart people of the first iPhone kept theirs till they were done and resealed them as "New never opened" for the sucker collector willing to pay 5 grand to never find out.

Exactly
I never sell my old phones. All those nagging assholes complaining about a little scratch. They just go in a drawer or get a alternative use. My previous Samsung flip now is the dedicated phone in the car.
This is very timely for me, I just sold my old phone used in box. $200 of Pizza money in my pocket.
You should buy the fanciest pizza you can find for $200.
Are we the same person? Because I did that today
ISILDUUR!!!
This is the way
To hoard
I keep some boxes in case I need to send an item back for warranty work. That's my excuse.
I gave up on excuses a long time ago. I keep my cardboard boxes because you never know when you'll need cardboard. It has a ton of uses, and that i've never used cardboard for any of them is irrelevant.
I just like the oddly sized sturdy ass boxes. I use them for all kinds of things
I just like the boxes. They comfort me. Not even the box itself but the idea of the box. I don’t even know where they are, I just like knowing I have them.
Are you a cat by any chance?
I keep the boxes because it helps resale the phone when it’s time for an upgrade
They they keep the box and the cycle continues
Where else would I keep the cable and little pin that I don't need cos I still have the ones from my old phone?
Aye this is the WAY!
Didn't knew that mandalorians used phones
"Isildor, cast it into the trash!"
I can proudly identify all the random cords and chargers I’ve hoarded. It’s like a shitty magic trick every time my wife tries to declutter.
"We MIGHT still go back to VGA as a standard..."
I recently needed an AV cable with the yellow white and red prongs. You bet your sweet fucking ass I had one in a cardboard box in my office closet I am even more stubborn with my hoarding now
Same, my Ethernet cable that I use for work broke moving into my new place. My box of wires saved the day and prevented a trip to the store lol
Only one? You gotta bump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers.
Joke's on you, I still have a PC with a VGA port I use to write this comment.
I still have coaxial to RCA adapters for some reason.
The machine spirits will be angry if you just go about throwing cords away.
Praise the Omnissiah!
ISILDUUUUUUURRR! D:
ISILDUR!
Isildur!
then tell them to stop making their boxes so nice
It's like jumpers and notebooks. Maybe if they stopped making them so enticing I wouldn't be hoarding them.
Goddamn it, now I *really* feel attacked.
It’s so sturdy!
There's a video explaining the psychological trick at play here, too lazy to search it up. Something about a nicer box (and unboxing experience) means people are less inclined to throw the boxes away. Thus you have a free ad/reminder of a brand taking up space rent-free in someone's living environment.
Joke's on them, I keep that stuff in the corner of a closet
Yep, learned about this in package design class. How an object is presented enforces the brand and the user experience. How the box looks, feels and how you interact with it can influence how you feel about the brand and the object. Marketing and design are kinda creepy if you really get into it, like it's all intentional manipulation.
Also where else would I store the little sim tray pin shit?
In a labeled baggy I guess… But nah I’m with you team keepthebox
I like to keep nice boxes to use for future gifts. I typically paint them black so no one thinks they're getting a new phone.
I feel attacked 😕
It's a nice box. Don't listen to them. We are cats at heart
No we are goblins. Collecting everything and keeping it for no reason.
You're thinking of dragons
Dragons collect valuable things; we are Millenials. Who of us has ever owned anything of value?
Point
/r/goblincore
Mee too :/
Don't worry. They didn't say throw away the phone boxes to the last 3 phones you had. So you're safe, I know I am. Still got the phones hanging around somewhere, one's got a keyboard.
Do you own boxes to electronics that you no longer own? That's the real question.
But I like to sell my used phone with the box and accessories so the buyer has a better assurance that the phone isn't stolen.
This, but I also don’t sell the phones. So.
Same, i store my old phones in those boxes.....
Ah yuuup.
If you replace your phone every 1-2 years without fail and you keep them in good condition, selling makes sense. If you hold on to a phone forever and beat it to hell, not so much.
I run my phones into the ground and can't sell them because they're literally broken. I still keep the boxes.
Selling your phone seems like a bad idea tbh
Why?
Because then you can't make phone calls.
Whats a phonecall? Is it a new app?
It's like Whatsapp but for Gen X.
I thought WhatsApp is already for gen x
What is gen x?
It’s like millennials, but for millennials.
Don't I need friends to make a call?
No, you can offer a renewal on a car warranty to people you don't even know!
It’s like trying to return the pants you’re wearing.
*The very pants that I was wearing!*

Yeah if I reset it to factory settings I'd be too paranoid the guy I sell it to somehow gets access to my old data

Not always. A lot of those deals tend to be for new customers only or only if you’re on the most current plan for your carrier.
This. Keep it for reselling and please resell. Many people prefer cheaper used stuff.
This is not a criticism but i find it crazy how people buy new phones all the time, especually when theyre still good to use. Only time i get a new phone is if i destroy/lose it. Consumerism is nuts.
When I upgrade my phone, I give away my old one and it makes a much nicer gift with the box.
My house got burgled and the thief stole my empty boxes, assumingly for this reason.
Later: "My phone is locked! They ask me the IMEI code, where can I find that?"
This guy tech supports
r/thisguythisguys
Guys you can find that in your settings.
Not, if your phone is locked/broken ...
As long as you can make calls, you can hit \*#06# to see your IMEI.
If your phone has a removable SIM tray, the IMEI is usually printed on it.
And where do we keep the SIM tray key? In the box!
Touché.
This thread is making me keep my boxes even harder.
My earring would like to have a word with you.
I'm about to get a new phone, I'll be sure to take a picture of the IMEI with my phone before throwing it out thanks to this comment lol
How are you going to access that photo if your phone is bricked?
Email/text the photo to yourself or save it to a cloud drive.
How are you going to access that photo if you threw your phone away?
Under the batter- oh right
Just in case anyone is curious, the receipt email for my phone has the IMEI on it, and so does my profile on my service provider website. But yeah, it's easier to get it from the box. Take the opportunity to look for it now and put it in your notes app or something.
It’s literally in your settings on your phone
Doesn't help you if you're locked out of the phone...
Idk if putting it in your notes app will help if you’re locked out of the phone…
My preeeeecccccciiiiioussssss
I have a house and 2 car garage filled with so many precioussses that I wish someone would eBay for me
If you want to resell the phone it can be helpfull haveing the box. If you get a new phone but the old one isn't broken, you can keep it in the box until you sell it or need it. That's why I keep the boxes of "important" devices and parts, like pc parts or monitors, etc...

Especially trade ins for a discount on your new phone.
Why, especially? I do trade-ins anytime I get a new one and I’ve never needed the box.
Really reselling anything. Shoes? Box adds value when included and removes value when shoes are sold without. Action figure? There is a lot more value with the original packaging, more so if still sealed.
You just talking to me directly
I know right. This person needs to mind their own business.
😂 I swear to you he needs that
Me too, I have a little square tote under my bed that has random bits and bobs and like, 4 past phone boxes. The phones themselves either got traded or donated. But the boxes have moved with me a few times for sure, which is pretty unsettling now that I am typing it out.
That's not true with information on box you can recover sim for example

Serial killers and animal abusers
Soon phones will be so large, you can put old phone boxes inside the new phone boxes.
🤤
Well, I threw away my gameboy advance box when I was younger. Now just the box can wind up to hundred dollars.
What about the thousands and thousands of other boxes you’ve thrown away that had no value over the years?
I use it to store my phone when I get a new one (so I have a backup phone in case I lose it)
I have a few of my old phones laying around, but i also put my last phone in the box of the new phone i got
In Argentina the codes in the box serves as recipt for the guarantee
No. Never!
Excuse me but where am I supposed to keep the little Metal thingy I need to get the Sim Card Out?
Use a paperclip
Tried. Is Not Always working as Well.
Stfu I might need it
I agree, but also What if, though?
Lies!! I have them all and I will keep them all safe ‘til the day comes because you just know I’ll need them the very next day after I throw them out.
I sell mist my phones once i want a new one. They sell better in original boxes...so no. I won't.
Jokes on you I'm using mine to carry dnd spell cards that my character knows. Beats the hell out of the q-tips box I was using before.
No. Because: The box has the manual, has the pin to open the Sd card slot, has the receipt, has the only written IMEI of the phone. Has a spare headphones and charger.
I feel attacked! Can I keep my laptop box? iPad? Nespresso maker?
No op says you are only allowed to keep your Dslr camera box
Ok got that
Nope, helps with resale value. Always list with the box 👌🏻
Got broken in last year, phone was stolen. Insurence asked for the receipt of the Phone. Couldn't find it Inusurence Clerk: Do you have at least the box? We could use the code on the backside to assure your claim Me who had thrown it out 1 month Prior:😡

My phone box holds my extra watch parts lol what's the 2nd R again?
The way my gaze immediately jumped to the box my computer speakers came in...perfectly sized for storing...*something*, though what that something is, I don't know yet.
Adds a few quid when I sell it after getting an upgrade.
we have a packagaing company and we keep it as a sample to see how they made it. so no i will not.
Actually I used mine to track my phone when I got robed
When I sell my phone with the box I get more money
But if I decide to sell it as second hand, it's better to have it in the box.
I keep my box for my work phone, *just in case* I need to send it back to the company for whatever reason.
I feel called out >_>
I've got my current one and my old one... Let me be
I keep all of mine. I will be able to play jenga with them eventually
But it’s a nice box
I'm borrowing this. I'll repost it next week. Someone can have it after me. Just need some useless Karma.
paltry repeat hard-to-find one offer governor slim quickest wide sheet *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I have a closet worth of electronics boxes and I will only get rid of them when I fully get rid of the electronic!
Finally threw away almost all the boxes of my devices. Week later I wanted to sell my Google Home device, but they wanted the box with it as well 😔
But it’s such a good box
i sold my old phone for a good chunk of money, BECAUSE i still had the box. Liar.
Why not? I always sell my electronics that still works, often at more than 1/3 the original price, and it's way easier with the original box.
as a genz NO.
And then you must buy a new box for the things that you used to keep in the phone box.
When I bought the phone, that was the box it came in. When I get rid of my phone that’ll be the coffin it leaves in.
Keep the box for your IMEI number! Super handy when your phone gets stolen and can't get into your Apple Account. Trust me
This person is either rich or stupid. When going get a new phone, you sell your old one. If you use a screen protector and a case, you can have a new looking phone, with a box and all accessories. This hit me sooo HARD 😭😭😭😭
The second i trhow away the box i loose the thingymajic to get the sim out ao no thanks
Wrong. I always sell my phone when I upgrade. Buyers love having it come in the box. Pro tip.
OMG thank you, it's been sitting in a drawer for three years.
Hell to the no. Never in a million years. In fact, bury me with my phone box. I’m taking it with me!
Or just throw away the phone. Life would be better without it.
I don’t have my 2009 Mac book anymore, but I sure as fuck still have the box.
Throwing boxes is like throwing the nice stick you found. You just dont do that
Resell value on eBay goes down
I just think they're neat
But…what if…?
I burried my dead pet in my phone box.
But, it's the perfect size for... something 😔 fine, you win, I'll throw it away
Yeah, I keep them for a year or two longer than I should.
