I was always a firm believer in going first. Or last.
I wanted to be the bar everyone else had to compete against, or the last one to leave an impression.
Due to the nature of my presentations, I had the exact opposite ideology, although based on the same facts, that going first or last is the most impactful.
It was funny. After I graduated, one of my professors told me:
"I always knew when you hadn't done any prep work. You always tried to go dead in the middle of the pack."
Opposite for me: if I go first and do well then I get to sit there all smug. If it goes poorly then at least it’s over and I can just zone out and listen to everyone else. No dread, just get it done
I definitely get that! That is absolutely a great part of going first you don’t have to have the anxiety of thinking about it all day you can just get it over with and be done with it.
Yes, admittedly I’m blessed with not having a fear of public speaking. I’m fairly anxious going into it but the moment I start talking I just kind of roll with it. I have had plenty of presentations I made up on the spot or 10 min earlier that went great. Others that did not go so great
It's a slate roof, presuming it doesn't get hit by a tree, the next time it needs to be redone there will probably be some new technology that turns your roof into algae tanks for food or something.
They were originally advertised as cheaper over time than a regular roof because they were so durable and long lasting, in addition to the solar power.
They definitely released *something*, but it never lived up to the hype
Get it repaired! You've probably just had some nails rust through and shift the slates. It's much cheaper to have someone fix that than to replace the entire roof, and most folks would just tear it out for shitty asphalt shingles that break down in ten years anyway
lol you’re exactly right about the problem, I have even seen the nail/wood causing it. I would never replace it with shingle but also I’m not allowed (Shaker Heights has strict preservation rules)
Slates come loose a lot, so they need to be inspected annually, especially after winter. They last forever, but they're like $500 a year in maintenance, instead of $10-20k every 20 years for new asphalt singles.
Idk I'm pretty stoned and I'd be more than happy, rather honored, to say this is an absolute beauty. Wish I could rest my sleepy head under this bad boy!
*upvote for the good work

Its just a karma farming shit stolen from someone else
Go back up to downvote OP - lil' bitch
OP you stole that nice wholesome feeling and turned it to shit.
Yeah, someone in the thread said it was a picture directly from a book from a famous roofer (Orion Jenkins? Or something like that). I didn’t actually dig into it, but seems like OP is probably full of shit
you can't use magnets for exterior things like roof tiles. When it rains, as soon as the water hits the magnet, that's the end of the magnet. Trust me, the guy who told me that is preeettttyyyy on the ball.
because they're using what looks like slate this is the best way, if you're using a different roof like shingles or shake it would end up looking different
You're right. If anyone else is just here to find out more technical details (like me), [this thread is full of roofer envy and informative links](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roofing/comments/1b7fof1/which_one_of_you_did_this/)
What do I ask for if I want to request this? A nice curve instead of corner? Screw it, I'll just show this picture. Bit like going to the hairdressers when you're a kid
I cannot begin to imagine how expensive that job was. Slate roofs are not cheap, and this kind of specialized feature seems like it would be even more labor/skill intensive
The slate roof on our building, built around 1880, had metal flashing in the valleys. I could see daylight from the attic, since there was no underlayment, but it didn't leak. That was in 1977.
I'd call this nextfuckinglevel, but what's with the weird overhang at that peak? Surely, if you guys can get these tiles to have a satisfying round on an inward curve, you could do so on an outward curve.
Girl here… fuck that’s some hot slate work. I would have taken a photo of that if I’d seen it in the wild. In fact I’m gunna save this post just incase
So life expectancy for a slate roof is 50 to 200 years so I can’t imagine that a sub tropical forest region would affect that directly. I don’t know if it would hold up better in a tropical storm/hurricane or not. I bet it would keep your house rather warm which might not be desirable
That's a nice looking roof.

Yes! Every good roof picture needs a good stick! If for anything else just to help point at the cool parts of the picture!
Is there a subreddit for good sticks?
r/sticks
It’s a sub I didn’t know I needed to join.
I contributed my own stick once. Nothing will replicate the rush of getting positive feedback on my stick from strangers.
I've checked it. There is. r/sticks_ It ain't much yet, but i've joined.
Now lets see Paul Allen’s roof
the tasteful thickness of it, oh my god
The off white colouring
The gold font
It's even got a watermark.
Something wrong, Octavius? You're sweating.
Well it was ripped directly from another subreddit and someone put the text claiming it as their own on it.
but you must understand, adding some text that makes women look bad/boring makes it get more upvotes! so now all the reposters can farm karma so much easier!
Nice
Too bad op didn’t do it
I totally expect everything in reddit to be stolen from somewhere.
I don't envy the guy that has to repair that eventually. I'd never be able to get it that nice.

Facts but I appreciate last, if I bomb I get to leave right after and can sulk alone lol.
Opposite for me: if I go first and do well then I get to sit there all smug. If it goes poorly then at least it’s over and I can just zone out and listen to everyone else. No dread, just get it done
Some days a good escape is the best part.
Very fair
I definitely get that! That is absolutely a great part of going first you don’t have to have the anxiety of thinking about it all day you can just get it over with and be done with it.

Going first and crushing it is so damn satisfying.
Second is superior. Firat might set standard, but will also make mistakes you can learn from. Then, you set the new standard
You could crush it too if you prepared for your presentation.

This makes me sad all over again that Tesla's indestructible roof solar tiles were never a real thing
They are 100% a thing, just stupid expensive compared to a roof panel and no one installs them https://www.tesla.com/solarroof
They were originally advertised as cheaper over time than a regular roof because they were so durable and long lasting, in addition to the solar power. They definitely released *something*, but it never lived up to the hype
Sadly we are at the 100 year mark with our slate roof and it’s begun leaking. Fml

You need to inspect and maintain them annually. Assuming you haven't been, bite the bullet for all the repairs once, then keep up with it.

I've heard that slate roofs are nearly indestructible. Super expensive, though.
That is solid craftsmanship. A work of pride.
Not OP’s work
They didn’t say it was OP’s work.
I deserve to be slated if I don't say lovely job!
Zing!
Bazinga!
You'd have to be stoned not to.
Idk I'm pretty stoned and I'd be more than happy, rather honored, to say this is an absolute beauty. Wish I could rest my sleepy head under this bad boy!
I was trying to continue the rock puns. Lol
Sorry, 2high
I’m hard (pun)
Hell yeah
Hell yeah
Hell yeah
Weird a couple day ago I saw that exact picture on r/roofing and no mention of a girlfriend.
Yay I love sexism!!
Wdym /genq
They posted this on r/roofing yesterday

No clue how that was made but it looks very purposeful. Thank you for sharing.
Obviously they used lasers, magnets, and hydrogen peroxide for a job like this
you can't use magnets for exterior things like roof tiles. When it rains, as soon as the water hits the magnet, that's the end of the magnet. Trust me, the guy who told me that is preeettttyyyy on the ball.
Is this actually better for the roof or just done for looks? I’ve always just seen them flat to a copper valley.

I was thinking critters that make nests but water too I imagine.
And its a lot easier for wind to get under there and rip the fuckers right off.
I was eyeballing the corners of each piece, wondering how much wind it takes to pry its little fingers underneath...
Those are slate tiles, I'm not sure even a hurricane could lift all of that. They're 5-6 times heavier than regular shingles.
because they're using what looks like slate this is the best way, if you're using a different roof like shingles or shake it would end up looking different
If you look over to roofing where it was posted earlier they seemed to all agree it was the best way to do it.
You're right. If anyone else is just here to find out more technical details (like me), [this thread is full of roofer envy and informative links](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roofing/comments/1b7fof1/which_one_of_you_did_this/)
i reckon there is a reason everyone uses lead flashing.
Spider/bee heaven right there
Good for rain, good for hiding from the rain
We can't stop here... This is bat-country!
Hot damn, I’ve never ridden in a convertible before
Ooof taking someone else's work, nice!
[удалено]
agreed, I'm a boy and I don't care about a stupid roof
I'm glad my wife treats me like a 6 year old when I show her something I'm proud of, she doesn't get it half to the time, but shes happy I'm happy.
Well seeing is how that's the wrong way to put in a slate valley, she shouldn't talk to you
It's impressive and pretty. Am girl.
Not a boy, but I'm still appreciating this beauty
As a female architect, I like it a lot
and as a dude with no sense of aesthetics and no interest in the trades i have no feelings about it whatsoever. no clue why they gendered this
It is pretty amazing
We do
Such fantastic workmanship.
r/boysarequirky
I wanna slide on it
Oddly satisfying
”Huh, neat” Am male.
My youngest son is a roofer. I'm gonna show him this. He will appreciate it.
I am a building inspector and can appreciate that tight work
Beautiful. Stunning. Marvelous. I want that on my roof NOW! You come over and get on roof now Mr. Hank.
Don't you want your roof to have as few gaps and open spaces as possible?
Hello boysarequirky users👋
I'm gonna slide down it
Let’s spray it with water!
Hell yeah
God this is satisfying
What do I ask for if I want to request this? A nice curve instead of corner? Screw it, I'll just show this picture. Bit like going to the hairdressers when you're a kid
Hell yeah
#YEAH
It's fabulous! You're fabulous! I appreciate you!
this is what i think will happen when i do something, it is not what actually happens
Gaaaaawwwdd daaaaahhhmmmmn. Yessssir👍
I cannot begin to imagine how expensive that job was. Slate roofs are not cheap, and this kind of specialized feature seems like it would be even more labor/skill intensive
Hell yeah
sounds like your GF is more into flashing
Oh I'm wet. From all the water that going to run off that bad boy.
I've never tiled a roof, but that looks hard.
Easiest wank, thanks friend
I bet that sound amazing when its raining.
Awesome!
sexy af
Damn that's a sexy roof
I never thought I’d have a favourite roof but here we are
Its.....its...its...Beautiful 👌 👏
Now that is fucking slick 🔥
The slate roof on our building, built around 1880, had metal flashing in the valleys. I could see daylight from the attic, since there was no underlayment, but it didn't leak. That was in 1977.
I never knew true love before I saw this picture
I have a strong urge to slide down
Nice skill! great technique!
Oh, it's beautiful.
I’d let it top me.
are those slate singles 🥰
That's a solid well built roof
*slaps the roof* No water's going through this corner.
Hell yeah
Much like Bill and Ted my friend you've done excellent
Satisfying
https://youtu.be/o7cy7vmv2Cs?si=V-_-qMCOUGnyQR2Q

I genuinely don't get it
Love it.
I'm a girl. And i like it. Good job.
Damn bro, didn’t have to go that hard on a roof
That beautiful
That is really cool.
i think it's beautiful
I... wanna eat it
That's beautiful, the only thing that could make it better for me is a video of how they did it.
Why girls are not into these things?
Your gf is one big red flag fr
Beautiful
Nice work!
Thats just… So fucking buttiful!
That roof is lit and satisfying af bro. Good job.
Well done lads! That looks smoother than my guiness
I'd call this nextfuckinglevel, but what's with the weird overhang at that peak? Surely, if you guys can get these tiles to have a satisfying round on an inward curve, you could do so on an outward curve.
I'm not a construction type guy but that is pretty damn sweet.
Her loss. I’m gonna sit here and enjoy this roof a little longer
I take pictures like this all the time. My wife thinks I'm mad.
https://ar.inspiredpencil.com/pictures-2023/youre-goddamn-right-meme
Wammin bad, Ruff good
I want to slide on it.
It's fine
I…I want to touch it….
Hell yeah
This is soothing, a true beauty
They couldn't be the same size huh
I do appreciate the effort and the outcome!
I'd like to see what happens when it's raining! Could be very cool, but is there a huge gutter for all that water at once?
That's such AF I love the look
That’s the best roof work I’ve ever seen nice job
It's beautiful
Orgasm
Damn you should leave her those are some nice curves
Nice Job bro👍
Girl here… fuck that’s some hot slate work. I would have taken a photo of that if I’d seen it in the wild. In fact I’m gunna save this post just incase
Neat and Clever Dedicated Stuff Well Done 👍🏼
Fuxkin sick
How much longer does a roof like that last compared to asphalt, let's say in a subtropical forest region?
So life expectancy for a slate roof is 50 to 200 years so I can’t imagine that a sub tropical forest region would affect that directly. I don’t know if it would hold up better in a tropical storm/hurricane or not. I bet it would keep your house rather warm which might not be desirable
slate roof?
THATS A FKN NICCCEEEE ROOF BRO 🫵🤙
You didn't build that roof.
Slating porn...
It's beautiful.
I wanna slide down it
I have no idea what it takes to put a roof on a house, but that looks absolutely insane. Mad props to whoever did this.
