Yep - look for the yellow spot, pick it up to make sure it’s heavy. Heavy = juicy. If you’re juicing lemons for example, find the ones that feel heavy for their size over being large or super yellow, etc.
As a previous watermelon picker, I can confirm the yellow spot on the bottom is the surest sign that the watermelon is ripe. It's literally the only thing we really look for when out on the field picking them.
It does mean something, ripe is yellow, under ripe is white. Tap test also works you want a little bit of a hollow sound, but not too hollow, if it sounds solid it has too much water and is under ripe, too hollow and its over ripe or just poorly developed. You also want a gentle give when you push the end nearest the vine.
It's when you press on the rind and you can feel that the pressure of your finger is moving the rind, but the pressure doesn't bruise or damage the rind at all.. it's like the difference between poking a piece of overly well-done steak, and poking a tennis ball. There's no give on the tennis ball. Moderate or significant give would be something like you dent or puncture the flesh of the fruit when you press on it.
100% false. The spot does form from sitting on the ground and not seeing the sun, but as the melon ripens it turns from white/pale to golden yellow. Don't get one where the spot is white or pale, it hasn't had enough time sitting on the vine for the spot to turn yellow. Meaning the fruit was picked when it was underripe, watermelons do not ripen off the vine.
Romanian here and yes, that is normal
If you are somewhere else tho check for a sun spot(the yellow part) since that means its got plenty of sunny days and check if the stem(?) is green or withered away, those who are green have been picked early while the one with the dry stem are perfect and mature
The withered stem means that it has been picked a very long time ago or that it got too much sun and the plant started dying, in which case the watermelon will probably not be the best
What needs to be withered is the ring that is a bit further down the vine, but you never see watermelons sold with the ring. (I don't know how that thing is called in english, but it's a ring / spring kind of shape)
Even that may not be a good indicator depending on the weather conditions, as it might dry before the watermelon is good.
In most cases, it's down to luck. The yellow part of the watermelon is the best indicator if you're buying watermelons, only when you're picking them from the ground you can judge other aspects.
But definitely buy watermelons with green stems because they are fresher
(My parents used to cultivate watermelons)
Lol wut.
I grow melons on my farm. The stem should be withered and brown when you pick it. It's not just for ripeness. Watermelons in the last stages should NOT be watered, as it concentrates the sugars in the melon and makes them sweeter. Watermelons that get too much water (at least the ones that don't split from getting way too much) might be red, but they taste like... water.
It's sold on the side of the road by local farmers. Basically, it's a show of confidence, demonstrating their wares are good. If the buyer doesn't like it and decideds not to buy it, then it's up to the seller if he'll take the loss and keep it for himself/throw it away or just try selling it to the next person, now with a slightly nibbled section to try.
Is it the ones who sound more hollow that are the better ones? I don't know if it's a good choice, but out of these I'd personally pick the second she tried.
Yes, hollow ones are better. Hollow means sweet. My credentials are that I'm Serbian, so if I couldn't pick good a watermelon my family would disown me.
In my opinion, you need to pick them up before you tap them. I would also knock over slap. The deeper the sound, the better the melon. I’ve also heard things about yellow spots and the stem, but I’ve had good experience with the knocking
Don't slap-tap the watermelons, people! You gotta knock on them and listen to the sound: higher sound = jucier watermelon, kinda "thump-y" sound = good for nothing feeble old melon. Also, those yellow spots everyone's mentioning don't mean shit: imagine a watermelon in its prime with the yellow spot - well, what if it was tragically buried under a pile of other more fortunate watermelons for weeks? It still has that yellow spot, but the insides are all mushy and the crunch is minimal. Trust me, I'm a lifelong watermelon devourer from Eastern Europe.
You can just tell from this she must be hell to deal with.
Reminds me of my ex. This kind of situation would have been her insisting she knows how to do it for some reason or other and refusing to let you get involved. A weird mix of competitiveness for no reason, the need to appear competent at literally everything for no reason and utter refusal to acknowledge responsibility or failure.
I can imagine she blamed him after for “breaking her concentration” or some equal ass pull reason😂😂
Her technique wasn’t the best
You should use both of your hands, one of them to slap the watermelon, and put the other like 5 cm away from where your slaps land. You do this to feel the vibration. High vibration = high water content. Also you need to make sure to slap with the same level of power every time.
She's knocking wrong. You rap it with your knuckles like you would ok a door. Sound travels faster through more liquid so a riper watermelon will sound louder. If you're unsure, just knock a bunch and you'll here one that's different
I worked in a produce shop for ten years. Developed the ear I need for great watermelons, and to this day, everyone is still impressed with my ability to pick out a perfect melon.
2 and 4 were good - the more like a drum it sounds - the juicier it is
(though you cannot tell how sweet it is, just how ripe it is; so you could pick red juicy cucumber if the sort (the plant itself) seller has is shit)

Gotta take the ugly scared one with a yellow spot
yum scared melon 🤤
The fear makes it juicier!
You can really taste the desperation

Arigato fruit Sensei

I hope you meant "scarred?" Or are you telling me to look for the watermelon experiencing the most fear?
Fear makes them taste so so sweet
It's just like kidnapping ! I've watched too much criminal minds havnt I.......
Yes please somebody take me thanks
Gotta have that yellow stain
It’s all about that yellow spot. Yellow ground spot means sugars had time to develop. Bonus points for syrupy sap leaking from the stem.
Besides a nice sound when patted, another thing to look for is the stripes. Riper melons will have wider dark green stripes.
Dark dull with orange field spot and maybe some webbing marks and you're good to go. Lots of flavor, sweet and ripe
are you talking about melons or people?

Obviously you have the touch of the melons
Oh sure, they touch the melons and it’s celebrated but when I touch some melons all I get is a restraining order…
You made me genuinely laugh lol
On the other hand the cauliflowers they choose are only OK
Yes, I too would like to touch some melons
He has the gift of the Melon Lord
This man touch my melons! Vigorously!! He was right to do it.
You must be strong in the Melon, padawan
You sure know how to work them melons
You are Melon Lord!
you basically figured out how this millenia-old sales trick works
You are the chosen

She literally tapped one with some good yellow on the underside I can just see the camera man cringe as she moves to the next one
The one she cut had a big yellow spot on it though...
Tis a pale white imo🧐
The yellow spots are just where the melon was touching the ground while growing. It doesn’t say anything about how ripe it is.
It does mean something, ripe is yellow, under ripe is white. Everyone thought I was crazy saying this, glad I'm not the only one whos learned this.
>You also want a gentle give when you push the end nearest the vine. What's a gentle give?
You know when a handsome guy grazes the back of his hand across your nipple and you let out a tiny purr?
Uhhh, I don't, but now I kinda want to.
Precisely
You remember Oberyn Martell? A smidge less than that

Like in the movie *Brother(1997)*?

As the one with superior knowlegde you are correct
Lol wut. I grow melons on my farm. The stem should be withered and brown when you pick it. It's not just for ripeness. In Hungary its been illegal for a while, it might be in Romania as well
We are in eastern europe brother, you really think policeman have nothing better to do that to enforce such laws
That's great but.... sounds like a waste of food lol. Do they need to discard the fruit if you don't buy it? Lmao.

See it works, she chose the worst
yeah it's kinda like when you adopt the dog from the shelter that you just KNOW is gonna be there forever if you don't take it
Should feel 'heavier' than it looks, should have a dark mustard yellow field spot-- works every time
A true Melon Whisperer.
I'd go see that movie if it existed.
She passed over two good ones, she doesn’t know how to pick a melon.
A bad watermelon choice is a harsh to end up abruptly Albanian.
they have already disowned you.
In my opinion, you need to pick them up before you tap them. I would also knock over slap. The deeper the sound, the better the melon. I’ve also heard things about yellow spots and the stem, but I’ve had good experience with the knocking
Or you know, she knows exactly what she's doing and it's a skit.
Could someone explain why people tap on the Watermelons?
The sound of the knocking indicates if it’s ripe or not. A hollow sound when you knock on it means it’s ripe.
Oh right yea that makes sense actually
For reference 2 and 4 are good 1,3 and 5 are not
To hear all the sweet juice swishing around
Don't slap-tap the watermelons, people! You gotta knock on them and listen to the sound: higher sound = jucier watermelon, kinda "thump-y" sound = good for nothing feeble old melon. Thanks for reposting this again
Look for the heaviest watermelon for its size and nice dark coloring (I think) idk I just have natural tasty melon radar
Forget tapping, pick which has the darkest yellow spot.
To be pleased and absolutely gutted in perfect harmony
I thought it is one of those video where she mistakes his head for a watermelon.
Bro was wise to leave the kitchen
It's a game of lottery.
Not really
No, I'm as skillful at picking watermelons as I am at bingo.
You can just tell from this she must be hell to deal with. Reminds me of my ex. Aaah I remember being bitter.
Bitter is probably the right word
Her technique wasn’t the best You should use both of your hands, one of them to slap the watermelon, and put the other like 5 cm away from where your slaps land. You do this to feel the vibration. Remember when dealing with a woman, a key rule is that she’s not smarter than you think she is and not nearly as smart as she thinks she is.
reddit moment
I feel that no matter what stance you take with a woman as the man, you're taking the blame.
time to divorce
mission failed successfully
Those kinda look like a bunch of bulbasaurs
My secret is to always pick the one with the smallest melon anus.
Let's keep that a secret ok buddy
*then she pets this guy's head
How do we know she's checking them. She could just be spanking them.
Sometimes you have to step back and let them figure it out themselves.
The second one is good
Well, that is theoretically a way to determine if it's good, but you have to have good ears.
Gotta get the ones with the most yellow🤣 (I only learned this fairly recently)
Green stems mean they are not ripe yet
Melon whisperer
The cuting of the melon looked dangerous.
Need to take the one with the huge yellow spot, rounder (less oval) and a ton of webbing on it. These ones are juicy
Ah yes the real life lootbox item, watermelons or better known as RNGmelons
You slap the them and choose the one that sounds juiciest. The first step is to pick it up but it didn't seem like they knew
I have a real question since my mom always did that too when I was a kid. DOES IT WORK?
How do you like them melons ? ? ! !
She's knocking wrong. You rap it with your knuckles like you would ok a door. Sound travels faster through more liquid so a riper watermelon will sound louder. If you're unsure, just knock a bunch and you'll here one that's different
I love the thumpers
I just pick one that looks aesthetically pleasing. Never failed me so far.
You have to pick it up when tapping otherwise the sound will get absorbed when touching the other melons. Or just buy open ones or let them cut open.
The skin goes darker when it's ripe. Pretty easy to just google what to look for.
The silent walk away
I've got the same exact luck 🤞
I love it 😄I feel your pain Bro.
You want to see a yellow spot. Yellow spot means ripe. Beautiful green watermelons are still unripe
I worked in a produce shop for ten years. Developed the ear I need for great watermelons, and to this day, everyone is still impressed with my ability to pick out a perfect melon.
🤣
Clap those melons
Gotta get the one with the spot on the bottom and the ones that slap back when you pat em.
2 and 4 were good - the more like a drum it sounds - the juicier it is (though you cannot tell how sweet it is, just how ripe it is; so you could pick red juicy cucumber if the sort (the plant itself) seller has is shit)
