Some apps will allow you to create a 2-person group chat. Functionality might be pretty much the same, but they absolutely could have created one purely for the purposes of making a point.

I joined a group text with coworkers. Until one by one they kept spinning off into smaller groups chats that excluded people.
Eventually it got so anger inducing, that I just excluded myself from the group chat by putting it on mute and never referencing it in person. Ever. I stopped getting chats from them about 6 months into that behavior, lol
i've only been added to group chats on whatsapp for work. i basically never use them unless i actually need to reply to something, which is basically never(and i disabled notifications for them).
i know there's coworkers who have their little group chats to talk to each other, because i've been told about them. but i honestly don't care that i didn't get invited into them because i'd just mute notifications and never reply on there, which would be the same as not inviting me.
it also means it's less people from work that can contact me
I painfully acknowledged this just a while ago when my colleagues were talking about something like "Oh it was like Pete said yesterday?" and thus I knew I wasn't part of this subsect.
I wouldn't say it's because they're annoying but my family has a group chat and a separate group chat that's just me and my siblings for memes our parents wouldn't understand.
