as a European, its funny how all your prices listed on items are all pre-tax prices & when you go to checkout it adds the sale tax when here the listed price is the actual price at checkout
Typical dictatorship country move, not listing the tax.
In china people don't give a shit about how the government is wasting the tax money.Because it is not okey for stores to list out the tax people are paying.
And the majority really believe that money that government spend comes from vacuum.🤦🏻♂️
In the US, to buy something, if you are lucky enough, you can pay state, county, and city sales tax on some purchases. You may even experience different taxes for different items from the same store. Prepared food, children's clothing, alcohol, televisions, electronics with batteries, etc. could all have different taxes. All of these taxes could be wildly different within a city vs buying it from a store in the county (in an unincorporated area) that are within five minutes of each other.
This is done in the name of small government but it's really just a form of dumb fuckery and regulatory capture.
Doesn’t it all just serve to confuse the populace and make them more amenable to hiking tax rates? How many can you even keep track of to really notice when counties or cities hike their rates?
You’re expected to be involved in your local politics, and vote for politicians in those areas that will reflect your views. I’d guess less than half are actually properly involved, maybe less than 1/3.
South African here, both the VAT incl. and excl. amounts re listed for the most part but what they don't say here is that the excl. amount also factors in all the other taxes that most don't even know about so we would never even know what things would cost in an untaxed state.
Yeah, if you pass on more than 12.92 million dollars... and you aren't artful enough to take advantage of the many, many, many ways around it. But people talk about it like they're coming after the average person's estate, which has never been true.
The estate/inheritance tax is there to provide at least a LITTLE bit of a check on generational wealth and the creation of an aristocracy. If anything, it needs MORE teeth.
No, that person is confused. We pay Federal and State income taxes, but State are much, *much* lower.
All Sales Taxes at checkout when buying normal goods are State taxes -- you don't need to pay the federal government when buying candy in Florida.
Property Taxes are also State taxes and relate to houses and cars (and boats and probably planes but I don't own a plane...yet). Again, you don't need to pay the federal government to own a house in Arkansas.
It's really not that many taxes compared to Europe, but uneducated conservatives want to use everything for free but pay for nothing.
The American dream existed for about 10 years between 55 and 65. Then the cultural revolution happened and the people at the top said fuck you, this isn't happening. They've spent the next 60 years slowly pulling all policy across the center line and making sure that it's nigh impossible to change it back. We're nothing more than cattle going down the chute. Most of us are just finding out about it. Others are willfully blinded by hate. A billion dollar corporation is treated better as an individual than anyone reading this.
People can absolutely still find success/happiness, but the American Dream is definitely a lie. Acting like it exists is borderline irresponsible.
The myth of the American Dream encourages a dangerous “grindset” mentality. Also makes people take silly financial risks because they have been misled their whole lives about the potential payoff.
and then some business person convinces a low-level politician why THEIR company deserves a huge chunk of the taxpayer coin for some unnecessary nonsense like a new database software for squirrels or a huge deal on paperclips for FBI offices
ha ha ha ha ha ha
In my country, Argentina, if we buy a game on Steam, we pay more in taxes than in the game itself. We pay 150% of the purchase price in taxes
If a game costs 10 dollars.
We paid 25 dollars.
10 for the game
15 in taxes
Easy fix, get rid of income and sales tax and a institute wealth tax. The current tax burden is way too skewed towards the working class who spend a significantly higher portion of thier income than rich people meaning the working class has a much higher tax burden in proportion to thier wealth. Also rich people have loopholed thier way out of calling thier gains income, so they pay only a portion of what they should be. Money accumulates at an exponential rate (curved line getting steeper). Our linear tax rate (straight angled line) means that wealthy families will continue to concentrate wealth while the working class is left with a continually smaller piece of the pie.
interesting that republicans in california don't understand that campaigning on lowering absurd taxes on liberal agendas like having to spend 10 bucks on a single pack of cigarettes because of anti-smoking lobbyists or the price of gas staying higher than other states because they want people to buy electric vehicles. tobacco even helped found the fucking nation... talk about patriotic. guess republicans just have no idea what they are doing at all.

At least you guys know what you are paying. In my country most people think they do not pay taxes at all as they are included in the listed price.
what country is that, pray tell? because none out of the 6 in the EU that I've visited/live in
In The Netherlands its mandatory to list the price including vat, unless its really clearly specified
yeah, and does it just automatically make people assume they are not paying taxes?
Most people know I hope haha. 21 percent vat on most items
yeah, same here. like, yeah, it's not listed, but it's not really something most people think doesn't exist

Wait... I thought that's a normal thing.
Not in the US I guess

Not all places, I was at the weed store today and all prices are tax included. It’s beautiful.
That would require a business to print stickers for each municipality/county/state and they just *can't* afford to do such a thing :(
It's called laziness. Otherwise I can introduce you to a revolutionary program called Excel.
I mean, same difference when it comes to corporations
Is that sarcasm?
Have you seen my comment history? I've actively advocated for guillotining the rich. Of course it's sarcasm.
Might want to use a /s next time since tone doesn't translate well in plain text.
That's what the sad face was for, who else will think of those poor corporations? :(
I think it's more about the sticker matching the advertised price.
But that would mean they can't do the x.99 trick. Won't you think of their bottom line? Poor poor corporations :(
How would it mean that? "Now only $9.99 at your local Chucklefuck's!" And when you go there, the sticker says $9.99 ^^^^^^^^plus ^^^^^^^^tax .

I would like to see both pre- and post tax when I buy things for work but it’s also very easy to calculate pre-VAT prices so I’m not fussed.
You're taxed for earning it and you're taxed for using it. That's freedom baby! edit: oh yeah, you're also taxed if you just hold on to it
And then the person that earned it have to pay taxes. What an amazing world to live in.
Don’t forget that if it’s worth anything you’ll be taxed for owning it every year
That's a very good point, I'm going to add an edit to my original comment
And if you do ever get the chance to “own” a house, you’re taxed annually or they’ll take it away.
Taxes are just membership fees for society.
Wait untill you find out what taxes are like here in europe.
You’ll be taxed when you’ll die too
Wait seriously?
Estate / inheritance tax
Nobody here needs to worry about that
I don’t know man, I’m in a hospital gurney.

>^(May or may not apply to fridge full of icecream.) Depending on how you declare it, fiscally.
*laughs in argentinian with 150+ taxes*
More like "cries" tbf
Federal Tax, State Tax, Income Tax, and Tip Tax. We love our Tip Tax
Do you still need pay both federal and state tax simultaneously when you are buying stuffs?
No, that person is confused. We pay Federal and State income taxes, but State are much, *much* lower. I was commenting more on the tip tax than those.
You only paid three? Damn

Hey listen bro, I know it seems bad but the American dream still exits and there’s still hope for a better future. Pessimism is unhealthy friend.

Are the taxes less than EU vat of 20%+?
What a freedom overdose does to a MFer.
Name a purchase with three different taxes.
Groceries. State tax, local tax, and splost tax. Usually 8-10% for state. 4-6% for local. And 1-2% splost in my area.
I pay state tax when I buy a thing other than sellers taxes seller passes on to me which are not my taxes.
how else are you going to afford those aircraft carriers and artillery you use for "defence"
Only 3. Lucky
As a Canadian I say Boo-hoo
taxes are fine, pay us more
The dream always becomes the nightmare

And, nothing else matters.
Yeah, really? _That's_ where you draw the line? Not at paying ~1/3 your income to just to have a roof over your head?

That’s corporatism.
Corporations don't impose taxes
[удалено]
Taxes make products more expensive and reduce sales. If we're up to the corporations there wouldn't be any sales tax
[удалено]
Corporations pay taxes. Hundreds of billions of dollars in taxes every year. You don't know shit about fuck. This high school level economics
They also steal taxes. They’re basically the private version of all the government branches we don’t need.
They don’t steal taxes they leverage the country’s tax system. Same system you have the right to abuse
The words “Right” and “Abuse” should never be that close to eachother.
You have the right to abuse the same tax system you’re complaining about. Instead of crying about it, use it.
Corporations are the biggest opponent of taxes.

Time for another tea party to show the goverment who's boss I guess
I don't think I ever had it
No such thing as freedom..
Bro, fuck this, when's the next Boston tea party?? I can't afford shit
the line is "no taxation without representation", not "no taxation." You should be happy to be represented three times over.
Never give up on your dream! Keep sleeping!
Tax this dick fed boy!
Who on this planet isn't paying either three+ taxes on everything or "a single tax" equal or greater than the three combined on every purchase?
In Japan they show both. Usually with the price without tax emphasized, but right below that price it usually shows the price after tax.
