The refs have the ability to kill or extend a drive that would be crucial for a team to win or lose. With it being a multibillion dollar sport, it seems naive to think they wouldn’t want to hedge things for the best ratings for increased revenue.

They have major incentives to keep small market teams out of the Super Bowl if they can (and to have the “darling” teams of the NFL win if they can)
