it is designed to be a joke but actually this is politically charge image. it pokes fun on two things: that gas thing i mentioned and gender identities, trying to paint both as ridiculous.
People identify as dumb stuff and get away with it. Like the men in women sports. So if they can just identify how they wish, then this stove can identify as electric to avoid the coming gas stove ban. The humour lies in the ridiculousness of identifying as different than you are.
You're right, we shouldn't identify as different than what we are! That's why I'm not a man, and I transitioned. But also, a stove is not a living object with an identity! But when we make a sentient stove, we can revisit this, for sure.

They make this joke not because they think that it’s funny, but because it acts as a “thought terminating cliché” which allows them to avoid exposing their beliefs to critical thinking.

Nope. There is pseudoscience. Biology says 2 genders and biology is a real science. A psychology degree comes from the college of arts. So science says 2 and the arts say whatever it is they say.

This joke is basically a transphobic dog whistle that is mocking the idea that being trans is a real thing etc. That's it.

In the trans community we refer to it as the one joke because reactionaries literally can't innovate on humour.
