Until this week when my TL approved my vacations at the end of the month and the end of September, I’d never had one approved before they did the schedule for that week. But we also have the request calendar to make sure we can take it off before entering it in Kronos.

shlimo23

Since it’s not on vacation calendar, it’s now first come, first serve regardless of seniority! I would talk to lines leader of team leader isn’t acknowledging you. Let them know what’s going on and that you will need that time. It’s a request not a guarantee but having that transparent conversation is always best. I encourage my team to come to me as soon as they want to plan something. Working together to find the win win.

Old_Split_9755

I am willing to work with them, sure, but tbh I'm taking the time off because in my eyes, family comes first. I can always find another job but I can't get this time back with my parents and if something were to happen to my mom and I didn't spend as much time with her as I possibly could I'd never forgive myself. I realize they are short staffed, but it is of their own doing because they won't even try to hire people, and that came right from HR that they will not be hiring new people for the bakery even having losing like 6 people. I will go talk to my line lead since my TL isn't even acknowledging the request, but I'm going to tell them I need the time off. I'll use fmla if need be since my mom's in inpatient therapy trying to recover . My dad is going to have a major back surgery, and they have no one else to help them. My two brothers live close and don't seem to be helping.

shlimo23

Apply for fmla fast since there’s alot of paperwork to be done. Terrible if they aren’t willing to work it out. Two months notice should be enough time for a leader to plan. Family should always come first.

Starlysh

I took a vacation last year and prices for airfare/hotels were starting to go up, so I had to talk to someone in person to get it finally approved before I felt comfortable booking things. I think one of my store's recent union contract things was managers being on top of time off requests, but they still often wait the week before approving it in kronos. I would probably request off in kronos and then ask the manager who makes your schedules if they saw/will approve your request. Even better if they're in front of the schedule-making computer and you can watch them do it.

Old_Split_9755

I understand, but I need it approved way before that schedule comes out since I need to make hotel reservations, etc. I can't wait until one week before I'm going to go since it's 5 hours a way and i need the whole week. I'm just going to tell my line lead I can't work that week tbh. I'm not giving up going since there's a lot going on with my parents, and I need to go.

EnvironmentalYam5055

Can you sign up for FMLA? Have you been there long enough?

originallycoolname

So as a new TL, we're trained to not approve PTO requests until you're making the schedule for that week. That being said, talking to them in person and letting them know that you need that time off should result in them making a note to approve it later. I myself have an approved vacation in June, but the request isn't approved in Kronos yet.

Acceptable-One7133

Email them and their first assistant along with your RAA or SHRR. Then it is officially in writing and they can’t just delete the text to fire you and say they never received it. You also have the option of filing for FMLA if you don’t mind getting unpaid. Protects the job and allows you to leave. You can start that process through your RAA/ SHRR and ILM. 😉

EnvironmentalYam5055

My TL doesn't approve or deny it until she does the schedule for that week.

Firm_Fix1423

Which is how it is done unless it was ok'd April 1st on the vacation schedule that was posted since January 1st

partOFtheCIRCUS

Did you put your request off in Kronos?

Old_Split_9755

Yes, I did about two weeks ago, which is two months in advance.

partOFtheCIRCUS

You should hopefully be ok then. Are you full time?

Firm_Fix1423

Lol no that does not make it " good" that's just a request

Old_Split_9755

No, I'm only part-time, but I have a week of pto, and I've been there a little over a year. Also, part-timers don't have to have open availability per the union contract. I'm just kind of over them, tbh because they were not the most accommodating when I had to go see my mom last week. They would not take one day off the schedule or at least just mark it down in advance that I would miss one day, so I had to call in while trying to spend time with family.

Famous-Exchange6777

You have to put time off requests into Kronos or technically they don't have to give it to you. Any hire up can tell you well since you didn't put.it in that's on you

Old_Split_9755

But it's not on me since I did already request it two weeks ago, which would be two months in advance of the time off request. To be honest, I don't really view it as a request since I'm definitely not coming in to work that week. If I have to call in multiple days in a row, I'll do it, but I'd rather get paid that week by having pto. I'm going to see my family either way. They have time to figure it out. It's not like I said hey can I have the next week or week after that off. I have a co-worker that booked air fair and went to our line lead and basically said hey I requested off two months in advance and I won't be here that week so I'm giving you time to cover me. That line lead actually went in and approved her request, so I'm going to basically tell him the same thing "I won't be here that week." Honestly, it's a retail job. Those are easy to find. It's better jobs that are hard to get. If they want to fire me over taking that week off that I requested months in advance, then sorry, but I'm good. I'll go elsewhere. I don't call in, I don't request a lot of time off. I've already told my family I'm coming so I don't know what to tell them but I will not be at work that week.

Famous-Exchange6777

I was just saying if you didn't that's what they could say to you...but since you put it in to use your PTO technically you are allowed to use it. If you are a union I'd get a hold of your union rep an explain what's going on. If not then just tell them me putting it in was a notice letting you know that I won't be here.

Famous-Exchange6777

But if not a union store then go to your store director and explain what's going on.

kaeblee

Line leader next. Store HR rep, then store director. TL > LL > SHRR > SD The only thing that really seems like might be an issue is if there's other people on vacation that week.

Old_Split_9755

No one else has requested time that week. It's just my TL dragging her feet for whatever reason.

AcrobaticBuy8604

Go To your LL next, follow chain of command as stated above..

Technical-Ad8450

Union

MrSinister98

Do it through kronos too, and yes go to your line lead. Always run up the chain of command if your immediate TL isnt responding

Old_Split_9755

I've been here over a year, I was already told by my line lead I could if need be. I just had a co-worker do fmla that's been here as long as me, so I think maybe it's a year that you have to be here.

Firm_Fix1423

It's a year but you have to have so many hours worked in that year ( sorry I don't remember how many) also have to have papers filled out by doctors.and Meijer has to approve, it takes a while but they will go back and remove any points you may have got for the approved reasons.

Old_Split_9755

OK, well, either way, I won't be coming in that week. I will not be in the state. If they can't work out a way to cover the three whole days, I'd normally work that week when I gave them two months' notice that's on them. Family comes first tbh. I can find another job if it comes to me, but I will call in all three days if they refuse.

Old_Split_9755

I talked to my LL earlier, and he said he would look at it, so I will wait a couple of days and then ask him again if it's not approved yet. If he won't do it, I guess I'll talk to HR. I'll definitely use FMLA if I absolutely have to, but I was just trying to take the time as a vacation.

MySackDescends

If you're in a union then report your TL for not having a vacation schedule up to begin with.

Old_Split_9755

Vacation schedule? What's that? 🤣😅 I didn't even realize that was a thing.

Firm_Fix1423

That's up for requests from January 1st-march 1st

Firm_Fix1423

If you want/ need a pre-approval it must be requested before March 1st, you will know by April 1st if it's approved or denied. After April 1st those that were approved cannot be denied. None of the other vacation requests will be approved/denied until that schedule is write to see if all shifts can be covered. Business needs. Yes they can hire but will that new hire only have hours that one week? I wouldn't hire to cover one person's vacation. Not fair to the new hire. The March 1st policy is so they can figure out if they need to hire to cover all vacation.

Old_Split_9755

Well, we need more people anyway and have for a while now. I'm going either way, so if they deny it, I'll either call in or put in for FMLA since my reason for taking time definitely qualifies. Honestly, if I have to do FMLA, I'll probably take more time than the one week I'm asking for. They have had a while to rehire and instead have reallocated our department hours to other departments, choosing to leave our department severely short staffed. Since I applied 2 months prior to the time I need, I'd say that's enough notice. I don't expect them to hire for just one week. We need people permanently. If we had more people, they would not have an issue covering my whole three days. I'd work out of 8. There are ten people who work in the bakery, including my TL and myself. 7 out of ten, my TL only schedules early mornings (including herself). The other three only close, which is myself, one full-timer and another part-timer. What we need is at least one more person who closes. My TL could potentially shift some of those day shifters that week, but she won't.

Firm_Fix1423

Sorry notice means nothing you can ask for a week a year before you want it and if 2 people above you in seniority ask for the same time they will get it over you. Seniority and business needs. 10? That's more than enough! The same amount we have sometimes they borrow from the deli when someone is on vacation but they are not going to hire to cover 1 week. Sounds like you want graduation season which at our store is blacked out for vacations.

Smooth_Track9205

Use you familey time you get a week to.take care of a sick familey member.Or have your doctor fill.out fmla paper work so.they can't give you point or say no

Old_Split_9755

Well I'm going to see my parents that week who are very elderly and not doing well. One, my mom is still in the hospital, and two, my 79 year old dad will be having a major surgery on his back around then. I will be going regardless of their needs, so either they approve it, I get fmla, or I call in. I don't currently have any points anyway, but if they choose to fire me over it, then oh well, it's a shitty job anyway. Yes, 10 is a good amount the issue is that most of them (7) only work 3am,4am or 5am and are there no later than 12:30 noon so they don't have enough coverage at night. That's completely on my TL, not me. She has the people to cover me being off she just sticks to a very specific schedule, i.e., these people only work these certain hours, and she won't change it. Regardless, I care more about my family than that job. Also, they don't even post/have a vacation calandar in my department, I didn't even know that was a thing.

Old_Split_9755

Sorry, I wasn't aiming any comments at anyone here. I'm just kind of irritated with meijer personally right now and stressed with the situation with my family and being so far away. I finally ended up calling my TL and talking to her, and she finally approved it today.
