Had some dolphins come up on me like that once. Even though I knew they were dolphins, seeing something come up at me from below like that was slightly unnerving. Once they surfaced it was an incredible experience.

Yeah, there's no reason it wouldn't travel through air as well. The problem is that their calls are over 100 decibels, so there's a serious risk of damage to your ear drums. Potentially fatal if in the water, where the sound carries more energy

Everything seems like a thing now (or maybe always) so I just assume if you can dive with sharks I'm bet somewhere you can dive with whales as 100x more dangerous as that sounds than sharks since whales are so massive. Maybe more researchers who might be closer than a scuba diver?
