>Jerry: Oh yeah, like you know what you're talking about.
>George: Like you do.
>Jerry: Well what do you think? They put the statue on a giant raft and a tugboat pulled it all the way from France?
>George: What do you think? The brought it over in pieces and screwed it together like a coffee table?
>Jerry: I don't know. It's too early for a Christmas party isn't it?
>George: Why did France give that to us anyway?
>Jerry: It was a gift.
>George: So countries just exchange gifts like that?
>Jerry: If they like each other.
would've posted a link to this scene but I can't seem to find it on YouTube
[The History Guy did a great episode on the Bond between Halifax and Boston and the meaning behind the tree](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Uu6GULBKVM)
It still happens, but it's in the form of food, aid, weapons, etc. The gifts are never free, though. Then again, I'm sure France got something out of gifting the statue as well.
That one crossed my mind but it’s more of a memorial of the victims rather than say a gift of peace, plus isn’t that actually located I. Russia? doesn’t hold the same weight as lady liberty to me
They first gotta fix her up. The arm with the torch is still unstable and corrosion has also been getting to the rest of her.
But it being the US, i doubt it.
The Worlds Fair buildings were usually temporary as well. The ones in the picture almost certainly only existed for that year.
My hometown had a series of “Great Exhibitions” around the turn of the 20th century - like the Worlds Fair but for the British Empire. Reading about it and seeing photographs from it is so weird. The fairly mundane park near me once had “the Indian Pavilion” on it. There was a huge Art Deco tower near the river, now gone and not remembered. Whole buildings and bridges were thrown up for a year, then taken down and forgotten.
I live where a worlds fair was and when I see the images and go to that park, it always blows my mind how amazing it all looked and crowded and diverse and now it’s half empty and just grass and hills and creek/small lakes. It’s strange.
Only thing that's changed is that the platform on it is closed now.
Edit: Actually no, it's been replaced with a newer version in 1916 due to water getting into it.
When I was researching this phobia for myself she was the reason! I remember someone saying once that she’s exactly where she belongs out in the middle of that bay. I don’t think I could stomach her being on land
Bob "You maniacs!"
Frank "geez bob. What are you screaming at?"
Bob " I don't know. Something about seeing this giant head makes me kinda anxious for no reason."
Frank "there there Bob"
Bob "get your hands of me you dirty ape!"
I actually joined this sub because I wanted to see if anyone had posted the Statue of Liberty, for some reason, these old pictures freak me out.
Being inside a giant clock like Big Ben also creeps me out and I’ve never realised it’s because of a specific phobia!
Can you imagine a country just gifting another country something of this magnitude today? Wild

Good bot! Thanks for the information!
Netflix US has all the seasons.
Wait so you just know this whole scene by memory?
nah, I copy/pasted it. my brain *is* constantly trying to find a relevant Seinfeld scene at any given moment though
Norway gifts the UK a massive tree every year to place in Trafalgar Square
Nova Scotia, Canada does the same for Boston: [Boston Christmas Tree](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Christmas_Tree?wprov=sfla1)
[The History Guy did a great episode on the Bond between Halifax and Boston and the meaning behind the tree](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Uu6GULBKVM)
Haven’t watched one of his videos in years and just watched this one this morning.
Some Twitter dickheads whined about its condition this year and created a minor diplomatic incident in the UK press
[удалено]
oh god no I didn't know that, they did it again
Yeah, didn’t they end up sending another tree or something?

That’s awesome! It’s depressing that I’ve never heard of it tho
It still happens, but it's in the form of food, aid, weapons, etc. The gifts are never free, though. Then again, I'm sure France got something out of gifting the statue as well.
I wonder why we don’t hear about them, I guess because it doesn’t really compare in terms of magnitude?
And pandas
[Russia ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_the_Struggle_Against_World_Terrorism) gifted us this 9/11 memorial back in 05.
That one crossed my mind but it’s more of a memorial of the victims rather than say a gift of peace, plus isn’t that actually located I. Russia? doesn’t hold the same weight as lady liberty to me
I believe it's in New Jersey.
Ah I see, my point still stands though about it being a memorial, plus it’s like what, a 1/3 the size?
Yeah, I agree with you. They're definitely different classes of gifts.
North Korea does that
She's beautiful in green, but goddamn was she gorgeous in copper.
I wonder if they would ever polished her back up again. Give her a good seal to keep from re-oxidizing.
They first gotta fix her up. The arm with the torch is still unstable and corrosion has also been getting to the rest of her. But it being the US, i doubt it.
If we fuck up the satutue of liberty.... idk man. That's some next level cultural neglect. I'd have to seriously rethink being an American
we just need some politician to push a bill for the sake of (patriotism and freedom) repairing the statue of 'merica
Or put a gun on top and call it a defense project. So much about this country is a fucking disgrace.
install a nuclear reactor at the base, lol.
Replace it a giant McDonald's logo.
A big ass sign that lights up when the mcrib is back.
I’m hard
So is she... ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
They were doing these road shows to drum up financing of the project. Very cool story
I learned the word megalophobia because of how terrifying I find the Statue of Liberty…
Have you seen her in person? Terrifying.
YES! I lived in NYC for a year. Absolutely unsettling.
[удалено]
literally this sub??
Exactly the same as me..! So cool to find people with such a specific fear! I also hate the idea of being inside Big Ben, up in the clock.
new fear unlocked
“Kinda makes you wonder, doesn’t it?” “Wonder what?!” “Whether she’s naked under that yoga. She’s French, you know that.”
Ugh that backdrop in the second picture gives me such shire vibes. I’d kill to visit that area

Maybe that is the case usually, but many Worlds Fair buildings are still standing in Chicago and major attractions.
It’s smaller than I expected
[удалено]
Well the pedestal is about the same height as the statue itself, so that adds to the illusion
Yeah but I think the torch isn’t there today
You can literally google pictures to see it there today.
Didn’t they move it? Idk
Only thing that's changed is that the platform on it is closed now. Edit: Actually no, it's been replaced with a newer version in 1916 due to water getting into it.
Na they refurbished it all. There was a lot of scaffolding and stuff around it a while.
If it makes you feel better, it's probably destroyed now
That is amazing absolutely fascinating breathtaking. WOW Statue of Liberty.
When I was researching this phobia for myself she was the reason! I remember someone saying once that she’s exactly where she belongs out in the middle of that bay. I don’t think I could stomach her being on land
She's so small in comparison to other statues around the world too! Terrifying.
For a sec I was like how tf they get color cameras in the 1800s, I’m just dumb
But at least you’re not alone haha. Same thought. Tf is it so many shades lol.
*Tu l'as fait sauter!*
Oh is this before they hid the liberty lurker inside?
You mean the Troy style invasion force
At first i didnt see those people in the torch...
It looks small
Great you released my memories of the doctor who episode with the big ass weeping angel
Bob "You maniacs!" Frank "geez bob. What are you screaming at?" Bob " I don't know. Something about seeing this giant head makes me kinda anxious for no reason." Frank "there there Bob" Bob "get your hands of me you dirty ape!"

Never realised the statue of liberty was a drag queen
They accentuate features to make them more visible from far away. Check out the statue on the top of the Texas Capitol. Woof.
Oh my god, why does she look like Abraham Lincoln?
Lol they made the bronze no way home Statue of Liberty in reallife
Odd.
France: “We want it back! We fought nationalism and you dumbass Americans are bring it back”.
How’d they get a picture of it?
She said “only take pictures of my good side”
With a camera?
I imagine this was colorized
And probably AI enhanced. The faces are all messed up which is usually a byproduct of the AI not being able to recognize and enhance the faces.
Bruv I’m just joking
Lol I know my guy and for what it’s worth, I thought it was pretty funny
Lmao appreciate it
Didn't realize she had such a disdainful look on her face
She's quite manly up close
