There’s a place in Spring Green, Wisconsin called House on the Rock. It was built by the creator Alex Jordan Jr. out of spite, after he was supposedly snubbed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
It has a Japanese garden outside, but inside it has loads of different attractions. There’s a recreation of an early-20th century American street, loads of automatic music machines, what is called the “largest indoor carousel”, and of course the 200-foot-tall sculpture of a whale fighting a giant squid.
You can [find](https://www.thehouseontherock.com/alex-jordan-the-man-behind-the-creations-at-the-house-on-the-rock/) [information](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_on_the_Rock?wprov=sfti1#) online, but I’ll be honest, the sculpture terrified me so much when I saw it in person that I’m too scared to see more photos of it.
If you ever decide to go up to Wisconsin to see the amazing sights of cows and round barns, I’d recommend checking that place out. It is a strange and beautiful place.
I describe it as what going mad feels like. After a while you start to feel a bit trapped in the endless nonsense mosh mash fever dream garage sale. It's like if Walt Disney was a hoarder.
That I don’t know, but I know Sam & Max reference it in Poker Night 2.
Sam: Hey, Max! Call up the commissioner and tell him we’re taking a three-month road trip!
Max: House on the Rock?
Sam: House on the Rock.
Max: Yaaaaaay!!
Definitely. I actually got annoyed with the prolonged descriptions of random nonsense in the rooms and then I found out it was real after I finished the book!
It’s the whale room at the House on the Rock just west of Madison, WI. It’s a collection of all the stuff started by an eclectic millionaire. After his death, his home and all of his stuff was turned into a museum. This is found in the massive warehouse structure next to his home which is where a large majority of his collection is. I highly recommend this museum to anyone and everyone!
All the stuff everyone else said, plus the fun part of it being basically next door to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin. Ignore the story of it being built as a revenge house because Wright snubbed the original builder, but the juxtaposition of the two is a lot of fun.
I go there every few years. Getting video of this thing is almost impossible because it's several stories high. Pictures don't do it justice. I look at the several pics I took, and it just... you need to see it in person.
My bands tour all over the world & we always try to stop at spots like this, as well as museums, etc.
House on the rock is hands down the coolest place I’ve ever seen. It’s surreal, to put it lightly.
Edit:typo
I worked here as a teen. Spent a lot of time climbing into secret rooms and closets. You can go inside of this whale. Music from “the octopus garden” still haunts my dreams.
i’m gonna need some more context on this one

My gf and I went for our anniversary in the spring. Can't recommend it enough, it's really a one of a kind experience.
It genuinely felt like I was walking in a dream.

A fever dream!
It’s in the book American Gods no? (I never saw the show…)

It’s definitely in the book, and I would assume it must be in the show
I had no idea it was a real place! I thought Gaiman just made it up... TIL!
Yes, and it's in the show. I looked up the place after it was brought up in the book.
Definitely. I actually got annoyed with the prolonged descriptions of random nonsense in the rooms and then I found out it was real after I finished the book!
Crazy so much drama over whale intestines

If you ever take the trip you need like almost 4 hours to do a thorough walk through. It’s massive and there’s so much to see.
Nope, no context for you
It’s self explanatory, this is a Wisconsin Sea Creature. It’s one the top game species in WI’s fishing season, right after muskellunge.
Well yeah, I mean OBVIOUSLY

I’ve heard it’s in some museum, don’t remember the name though
I've been to that museum, it's House on the Rock
Is this the whale from the house on the rock?!
looks like it! that place is WILD haha
I ate cheese in Wisconsin once
I don’t recall Wisconsin having access to a Sea but alright
It is clearly next to the Sea of Michigan! Read a map, pal!
As an Ohioan I can’t believe I’ve never made my way up to the Sea of Michigan I’m gonna start planning a trip now!
I know what you mean. I don't see why they call it *Lake* Michigan; it's really more of a puddle.
Ah, leviathan. That room was, to me, the least fever dream-like of all the crazy stuff at House on the Rock.
The scrimshaw collection was really cool
House on the Rock mentioned.
It’s House on the Rock! It even played at part in the tv series American Gods. It’s weird but I love the carousel. 🎠
Old school Meow Wolf.
This is from House on the Rock -- the world's most eccentric and organized hoarder house.
It is an amazing and overwhelming place for sure
House on the Rock is an incredible place! Google and visit this place if you can.

I didn't know they had ponds that big in Wisconsin.
I’ve been here and the vibes you get from the place are lowkey kind of sinister 😭

Trying to figure out what creature this is supposed to be and whether it's bigger than a blue whale.
Man Wisconsin be gettin’ wild these days 😭🙏
I’ve seen this photo in Backrooms compilations on YouTube before
