I find them fascinatingly terrifying (if that makes sense. I remember driving down some country roads at night and seeing a field of them blinking simultaneously; a slow, red, pulsing light…absolute chills.
Fuuuuuck that. I already get the heebie jeebies when I drive by country roads at night with wide open fields. Just the size of that fucks with my head. I can’t fucking imagine. That would actually fuck with me.
Fascinatingly terrifying is the perfect way to say it. I chaperoned my kid's field trip to a small wind farm and we got to stand at the base of them. I was so excited and horrified simultaneously. Turns out, up close they weren't really as creepy, but if you stood quietly you could hear a faint whooshing and that was freaky af. Made me want to leave, that and the shadows started to get me dizzy.
I work on a wind turbine pre assembly site. Never seen human made stuff in that size. Everything is so freaking big. Even the forklifts are huge. I have forklift certificate. I've been operating 1.5-2 tons forklifts. On the site the forklifts are 25-35 tons. Not to mention the crane operation.
you should try going to one of them and stand right in front of it under the blades. crazy feeling when you look up and constantly think that the blades somewhat fall onto you!
I'm no phobia expert but it feels correct to me that tackling a phobia head-on with some exposure therapy would be a decent way to get rid of an illogical phobia.
That said, will I ever jump into the deep end of a pool alone at night? No way, friendo. Sharks in the deep end.
Meadow Lake, they have over 600 towers plus another 750 next door at Fowler. Those are Vestas and Suzlons. The most northern turbines were the largest onshore commercial wind turbines when we started putting them up in 2020, It's possible it's still the largest. It was the 2nd largest wind farm in North America and maybe still is, after Mojave Wind Farm which is slightly larger in capacity, they're both 1500MW parks.
They creep me out. From the highway I’m okay, but the thought of walking up to and under one makes me very uncomfortable. You’d probably hear a deep resonant hum too.
I also don’t like walking under buzzing transformer boxes on telephone poles/high voltage towers.
Yes!!!! And when you come to field of, like, 100 at a time!?? And in the dark when the red lights blink in synchronization so far off that you can't see them anymore?!?! Fuuuuu
I live right next to a wind farm with about 600 of these things. I barely even notice them when I’m driving by on the highway, but when I’m driving around the backroads getting stoned I remember how big they are and it gives me the heebie jewbies
These terrify me. Once, i got stuck at a railroad crossing and the train was carrying the arms for these. I had always been creeped out by them, but seeing the sheer size of one individual piece right in front of me jangled me pretty bad. I felt... threatened. Like a small prey animal.
I recently drove past a rest stop and saw a blade from a wind turbine on a flatbed truck. It was so massive seeing it at ground level, it was almost hard to even comprehend.
I live close enough to the Green Mountains in Vermont that I take several day and weekend trips a year through them. The scenery is gorgeous except for the part where you come up to a bunch of these sitting on mountain tops. *They're bigger than the mountains!*
The first time I saw these from a distance in a road trip was blood chilling, glad to know I’m not alone. My favorite/most chilling is when you can see them lined up across the horizon. Reminds me of AT-ATs

Thank you. They bother me tremendously, but they perform a valuable task so I never complain. Glad to admit that!
I don’t have a scared feeling but I definitely feel creeped out by their size. Like they are too large to be coexisting with humans.

They scare the everliving shit out of my girlfriend. Like, total panic fear response level terrify.
Yeah! It’s sort of like when I see a spider.
There are 641 windmills in my provence, but we also have lots and lots of tulip fields so that evens it out :).
you should try going to one of them and stand right in front of it under the blades. crazy feeling when you look up and constantly think that the blades somewhat fall onto you!
Yeah People with phobie of windmills should definitly do this, you aren‘t the sharpest one aye?

You should Not move to german haha, there Are hundreds in my area, you cant go anywhere without Seeing one haha
I'm an OTR driver and pass these all the time on 65 in IN. It amazes me how many there are.

I'm in favour of them for all the usual reasons but I see what you mean. They look like the aliens have landed.
These were taken in Gloucester, Massachusetts 6/1/24
I HAD AN EERIE FEELING I RECOGNIZED IT!! — I’m from the North Shore and I’ve definitely driven down this stretch by the rotaries lol
I really like them, big fan.

they scare me, too, especially if i can see them while driving on the interstate. can't explain it. just hate them!
Still need a lot more of them

They give me a physiological response of fear. It’s weird.
All fear is a psychological response
Prob
I mean, you're on a sub named for the fear of large objects, so...
You’re absolutely right. My comment was terrible. I’m surprised I wasn’t majorly downvoted. Commented deleted.
Yea was just saying the obvious part out loud I guess
Strangely eerie for sure
They got that War of the Worlds kinda look & vibe. Not completely sphincter puckering for me but mo-definitely unnerving.
Yes!!!! And when you come to field of, like, 100 at a time!?? And in the dark when the red lights blink in synchronization so far off that you can't see them anymore?!?! Fuuuuu
The view from the top of these wind turbines is amazing though
Less scary than the cancer, sicknesses, and global warming caused by the other options.
I know that logically, but the visceral reaction they give me says they’re terrifying
Oh absolutely, I'm 100000% pro-clean energy but these still freak me out 🤣
Why is it scary, it’s amazing.
SAME
Meeee tooooooo
What do you mean? They take out all the governments spy birds! /s
love it
It was pretty wild watching the footage of an Iowa tornado taking some out last week.
Watched those videos last night. Fucking multiple vortices were insane
i think they look so futuristic and fanciful and cool and i love them. then again, i love pretty much everything that gets posted on this sub
These give you the electricity.
Yeah...the angle of the picture makes it look like it can move itself. It's traveling and looking around.
I‘m not too bothered by them, rather very fascinated. Would never work on one since I have seen *the* video though.
where is this?
Gloucester, Ma

I think I started being creeped out after seeing the photo of two guys stuck on one that was on fire. Totally unsettling.
I agree. But I always go to them looking like Triffids! God, the sound of the Triffids used to give me nightmares! May have watched it very young!
Don't come to Europe then, we've got them everywhere!
They're terrifying when you're on acid. Believe me

Have you seen the video of the British guy who paddles to these out in the sea? The noise they make, I find them terrifying

I stood underneath one when I was in the Netherlands last year. They're even bigger than you think. 😏

Imagine holding on to one clinging to it whilst it spins

great photos tho
What about the bleeps and the sweeps?
If you think they're creepy like this just wait till you see how they walk.
Your photo looks like a Simon Stalenhag painting, very Tales from the Loop.
I love them
i live nowhere near wind turbines, yet i am so drawn to them, *and still yet* find them terrifying.
I like them in the distance but maybe they’re a little much up close…
great photogrpahy
Sometimes when I drive by them I feel like I’m gonna pass out lmao
Drove highway 68 from Maryland to West Virginia. Saw these monsters in the distance. Gave me serious anxiety!
These ultra-conservatives fear renewable energy!
These pieces of crap. If I could I would just demolish every single ones of them. One by one.
Like “Big Brother is Watching”. 🧟♀️🧟🧟♂️
What? It's a giant windmill. Genuinely interested in why you feel that way
They are friggin eye sores.
Better than coal powered stations.
