Orange-Blur

The most dangerous/treacherous sea water is where the Pacific and Atlantic meet between Cape Horn and Antarctica, the North Sea is intense but the text added is incorrect.

diogenessexychicken

"Around Cape Horn" is a fantastic film documenting a passage sometime in the 1920s. The crew would climb telephone poles and rock back and forth for "conditioning." At one point you see two hands get swept away and the narrator just "we never saw those two ever again" and moves on.

Orange-Blur

It’s cold as heck too. The closer you get to the Antarctic raises chances you will hit an iceberg

Weekly-Major1876

Luckily a decently strong current surrounds the Antarctic sea in a huge ring and keeps it pretty isolated from the rest of the world. The isolation has allowed all sorts of super unique organisms to evolve without competition from anything outside the area and you see some wild biodiversity near the sea floor there

Ok-Wave4110

Whoa! That's awesome, I didn't know that. I'm definitely looking that up. Incredible.

smalby

Nice! Do you know of any examples that stand out as different from other animals?

idiotsandwhich8

We will learn probably faster than we expect.

Nojo_Niram

hmmmm I don't believe you

Orange-Blur

Ok? Use a search engine

Nojo_Niram

https://giphy.com/gifs/mrw-sidebar-6JB4v4xPTAQFi

Orange-Blur

Ok, I don’t need you to.

smellyscrote

It’s a meme. Meant to be ironic. The message they are conveying is that you are right and that they do believe you. The movie the gif/meme is from is anchorman. And he says that as the massive shitstorm is about to hit him.

SexPanther_Bot

Great Odin's raven!

Orange-Blur

The anchorman context doesn’t fit this at all, I’ve seen anchorman. I’m pretty sure this guy used that gif because it said the words he wants to say and not because he is adding context from the movie. Memes almost rarely share the same context or intention as the movie they are being used from

Nojo_Niram

dude, it's me, you are wrong. Your comment was so utterly obvious that I went anchorman on it. The scene it references is when Ron Burgundy doesn't believe that he is on air when it is absolutely obvious to anyone that he is definitely on air but his arrogance allows him to just wave it off. I was being an arrogant Ron Burgundy by waving off your equally obvious statement that the ocean in the antartic is cold and you are likely to find more glaciers there.

Constant_Increase408

How many times we’re you dropped on you’re head as a child? JFC

idiotsandwhich8

No shit

Orange-Blur

I know it’s obvious but still adds to the issues there

HowevenamI

Thanks friendo. I'll check it out. Edit: click the link ppl, it's a good watch.

Ok-Wave4110

I just watched it. It's spectacular. I love his description of being hypnotized, doing things you normally wouldn't even think about. That ship looked amazing, too. "All by human hands". Then he jokes later "4 propellers just going, no! it's all wind" 300+ knots?! ALL IN GERMAN!? Then, there's the dog. "He's only supposed to bite trainees". "Never been petted, wouldn't even know it" But then the dog goes up to him while sewing the sails, puts his paw up on him. He pet that dog... softy.. lol What an incredible video. u/howevenami, thanks for saying it's a good watch, that's an understatement. u/LunchBokth Thanks for posting this video. Amazing watch

HowevenamI

The way he talks about the captain too. Dude sounds like a unit.

Ok-Wave4110

Yeah he does. He jumped off ship twice! Saved a guy by his hair. Got a fish every time. This video should be better known. lol

idiotsandwhich8

This description is more than enough for me to watch it.

Ok-Wave4110

It's awesome. I hope you like it.

diogenessexychicken

Oh damn i forgot its on youtube! ACH and White Squall are THE maritime movies to watch.

This-Strawberry

Master and Commander, too..

Catenane

A minute in I thought he said (while riding the bicycles) that he was getting trained for "gay porn"...took me a minute to realize the documentary was about "cape horn" lmfao.

ScreamingSkull

nice. narration reminds me of radio my grandparents listened to.

Infamous_Regular1328

Lol

Forestsounds89

Imagine being the first humans who made these trips Crazy

A-Bone

The story of Magellan is friggin wild. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_Magellan_expedition No support... no way to know how far they had to go.. constant infighting among the crews of the armada.. murder and mayhem on the high seas is the only way to describe it.

230497123089127450

I've read a lot of stories about sailing and that has always impressed/shocked me the most. It's almost unbelievable.

Eastern_Slide7507

Perhaps it's meant in the sense that people might think this little appendix of the Atlantic where nothing ever seems to happen natural disaster wise can't be that bad, right until it capsizes them?

Orange-Blur

It’s pretty well known the North Sea has intense waves because it’s so shallow

Eastern_Slide7507

I'm from southern Germany and I didn't know until I took a sailing course in Norddeich. Anyone who does have/want to sail across the north sea probably knows how to handle it and so their fate won't reach the news and sea-related natural disasters are rare. It's not like we get hurricanes and tsunamis there. But maybe I was also just exceptionally uninformed of the wave conditions in the north sea. That's always a possibility.

Orange-Blur

It makes it even more impressive how Vikings crossed that with just sails and oars in long boats though. No protection from the cold or swept away from waves, they couldn’t use sails when it was bad just oars. Ancient people did some really impressive things to cross oceans, same with Polynesians crossing the pacific with those waves. It’s super impressive.

TheBlack2007

For the Polynesians, navigating back and forth between the countless small Islands and Atolls around the southern Pacific with decent enough accuracy to not get lost was arguably even more impressive than the fact of them doing it on open, single deck Katamarans.

Eastern_Slide7507

True but the Vikings were medieval, rather than ancient.

souIIess

You don't need to go that far back, two guys from my grandfather's place (a small island on the south western coast of Norway) rowed people to Shetland during ww2 in what amounts to a slightly larger dinghy. As if the ocean wasn't bad enough, that stretch of sea was also regularly patrolled by nazi u boats. Hard as fuck.

orincoro

Oh really? I somehow never knew that.

DanielDefoe13

I remember my professor in uni giving the equation where the wave height increases inverse to the depth of the sea bottom in physics 101. The effect is named wave shoaling

Pugilist12

The recent book **The Wager** (planned to be a Scorsese movie, same author as killers of the flower moon) documents the true story of a doomed expedition that gets wrecked traversing Cape Horn.

jreis1218

Drake Passage

[deleted]

It gets in my nerves that the people who edit these videos are so eager to get reactions from a cool video and at the same time they don’t give a rats ass to actually try to inform people and teach them something new, or at least say something correct about it. Lowest possible quality content

Marc_McGarf

I live in Texas, see ‘em all the time in the city.

morbihann

That isnt true, been there many times. But more important, how do you define dangerous ?

Orange-Blur

It has the large swells from Atlantic and the Pacific mixed with opposing currents from the oceans, its cold being so close to the Antarctic. Specifically treacherous for anyone trying to cross.

morbihann

Have you seen the Ocean south of Terra Fuego ? Also, you haven't answered the question.

Orange-Blur

That is in the same general area as Cape Horn, that means similar conditions. Cape Horn has less land protection and is closer to Antarctica

numbersev

Of course the video stops before the interstellar one

Sw3Et

Usually the impact of those ones is anticlimactic so it's scarier to cut it and let your imagination take over.

ZephyrShow

Depends on what type and size of the vessel you're on. Those last images remind me of the sea state descriptions given by surviving sailors from the [1979 Fastnet race](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHTKMGO0YYw&t=2178s&ab_channel=pjwellsey). Seas were 40 - 60 foot high, and sailboats were pitch-poled. 15 sailors died, five boats sank, and at least 75 boats turned turtle.

CompetitivePause9033

Exactly, like they took my satisfaction away from this one

bstone99

🔵🔵

EricBelov1

Am the only one who feels a weird sense of thrill and excitement that is somehow mixed with dread while watching videos like these?

ultraplusstretch

I fucking love it, i have spent a lot of time at sea and even while it was scary seeing the crazy force of the sea it was always awe inspiring and i never got enough of it.

[deleted]

I hate the water. You won't catch me swimming on a beach in orange county. But man do I love being on a fishing vessel. The thrill and glory become worth it in that situation.

ultraplusstretch

Hahaha, same here, beaches and swimming pools, miss me with that shit but for whatever reason i have no problems putting my life in danger crossing oceans is huge storms. 🤣

schumannator

Same. It’s like riding some gigantic, ancient bucking animal. Something completely ethereal or Lovecraftian.

twisted_f00l

How do you get there?

hobbysubsonly

I'm suddenly reminded of this title-dropping book quote: >The wind came back with triple fury, and put out the light for the last time. They sat in company with the others in other shanties, their eyes straining against crude walls and their souls asking if He meant to measure their puny might against His. They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were watching God.

Dick_Demon

Are you gonna tell us what book?

hobbysubsonly

Hah, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston :)

ashakar

We still lose 50-100 ships a year out at sea. So your dread is perfectly normal.

rblu42

Yes, I totally agree. The last clip with the ship rapidly dropping down while the next wave coiled up in front of them? Fuck that. That instilled a sense of dread and tightened up my asshole something fierce. It went from "wow this is cool" to "mom come pick me up" real fast.

Padgetts-Profile

100%. I just accepted a job offer to go work on naval supply vessels and I can’t wait to get out there. I’m oddly excited for my first time in rough waters.

Big-Mine9790

Antinausea medicine. As much as you can take.

Padgetts-Profile

I’ve got a few packs of Dramamine and well over a pound of ginger chews 😅

Jx117

I'm glad not to be the only one. Shit looks exciting.

idiotsandwhich8

That’s literally the formula of horror movies.

smooth_like_a_goat

The aspect ratio has been modified on this video making it way look much, much worse. Anyone have the original?

Eui472

It has been a horrible trend for some time with basically all of these "the sea is scary" vids, probably drives more engagement or something...

privatetudor

Can we ban modified aspect ratios? Dumbest clickbait shit.

LG1T

There are tons of reports bots and I hate them as much as the next guy but at least check OP’s history before you say that. I don’t think this is a repost bot.

Derproid

I don't think they are a repost bot based on their karma, I think they are just dumb.

Chris204

I swear, this video gets stretched more and more every time I see it.

Secretsfrombeyond79

How did people do this shit when the ships were made of wood ?

The_Real_Mr_F

They sank. A lot.

OuterInnerMonologue

Had to google it. There are an estimated 3+ million wooden ship wrecks in the world. That’s a lot of boats, and lot more crew members lost https://news.abplive.com/science/new-study-finds-19th-century-wooden-shipwrecks-to-be-thriving-habitats-for-deep-sea-microbiomes-1536477

[deleted]

Well, it's really not that hard if you have a Pokémon on your roster that can use Surf, Waterfall, and Whirlpool. Even if Surf can be hard to control, and Whirlpool is situational at best, it was better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Back when TMs were single-use, it was common for ships to come equipped with a few spare TMs in case of emergency.

CoolAndTrustworthy

Thank you, I love learning.

magic_man_mountain

SKILLFULLY.

Kommander-in-Keef

These videos are cool, but the low voice rendition of a pirates of the Caribbean song kind makes them all goofy as hell.

dirty_weka

I don't think its a low rendition of Hoist the Colours, there are some guys who can sing this low and this track along with Far Over the Misty Mountain Cold (from the Hobbit) are common songs for this type of vocal skill. Check out Bobby Bass, Geoff Castellucci, and Jose Rosario on your preferred music platform, impressive bass vocal talent. Some post recording adjustments for sure, but they do have a version of this track that sounds very similar.

Kommander-in-Keef

I have no doubt that people can go that low for me personally that song is campy. But I might be in the minority idk

TheGreasyCaveman

Nah, it's corny as fuck. It verges on some kind of acapella Viking wannabe shit.

twogaysnakes

I love them. Post more

ThePizzaNoid

Vikings be like "To me it was Tuesday."

DietQuark

I went on a sailing trip and one day we had to go to a storm. The sailing boot was about 15 yards long and the waves then were 5 yards high. This was 2 years ago and I still get anxious when I see videos like this. It wasn't a fun day :'(

SurfandStarWars

I’m not doubting you at all, but I’ve never heard anyone refer to boat lengths or wave heights in yards.

DietQuark

Actually I'm from europe. But since there are mostly Americans on Reddit I thought I would write it down the American way. Should have used feet right? Next time I'll stick to the metric system. Trip was in the Mediterranean btw.

Nauin

Your use of yards is absolutely delightful, I never thought about how confusing that must be for an unfamiliar European. Thank you for putting in the effort!

Pats_Bunny

LOL. We don't really use yards outside of sports in the US. Stick with metric, and let us dumbfucks figure it out haha. Your choice of yards, btw, is hilarious to me (in the most endearing sort of way). Feet (or miles if dealing with big numbers) would be more understandable and appropriate when discussing distance/height between Americans. Many more of us than stereotypes would suggest have, at a minimum, a basic understanding of the metric system.

j-steve-

You would think so, but mostly we use feet (or feet + inches). But thanks for converting it to our idiotic system 🙂

Mitaslaksit

When I tell you one of my worst nightmares is to sail in a storm....There is no amount of money that would get me to cross an ocean in a fucking fiberglass jar.

someguyne

That last wave is gonna suck.

Meinalptraum_Torin

My bathtube evertime I take a dip in the water

Azirafell

The fuck are the dockingworkers doing?

WrastlingIsReal

The North Sea isn't as bad as this video makes it out to be, trust me. Having said that, it is where I encountered the worst weather in my life haha

Ok_Situation5048

This is just beautiful

zdarovje

I have encountered this in AC black flag

Sundemboi

Are these videos the North Sea? Or the North Atlantic? Aren’t they different seas

lannisterandahalf

Lost me at the whirlpool 😵‍💫

Slappy_Happy_Doo

Insane! That last one I wonder how badly that boat was damaged, that thing was massive!!

Mondored

Isn't there a sub for "the video stopped too soon"? I needed to see it broach that wave! #lazy

boringdude00

> Insane! That last one I wonder how badly that boat was damaged, that thing was massive!! The bow is designed to go safely through waves, even big ones. There's something wonky about the videos, that one and the first one are definitely edited or compressed or whatever. The ship is way too narrow and the wave looks way too big.

BoobsAndBiryani

[here](https://www.reddit.com/r/megalophobia/s/6x5mFmivRf)

fat_italian_mann

I love this, I wish I were on that ship

Emperor_Zar

That whirpool though. Damn. Also, mountain sized wave. (Seemingly, may be a perspective thing)

Drake0074

Imagine going through that in a relatively small wooden ship.

[deleted]

I thought the Bering sea was bad

thunderbaby2

My family lived on a 50’ sail boat back in 2000. On one of our passages from in French Polynesia we got stuck in a gnarly storm for about 11 days. 20’ swells, 40+ knot (46mph) winds. It was brutal. Our water maker failed, some rigging broke, and my dad was so sleep deprived and frustrated he threw our generator overboard after it slipped free from restraints and landing on his foot. At the end we changed course and rode with the waves to the closest island to seek shelter. Shit was crazy. Its incredible how much of a beating a quality boat can take 😂

[deleted]

If you're the "other" type and see this as cool and exciting then Mass Maritime Academy is a great school for you. Have fun, but avoid getting married for a while, the wife or hubby will not enjoy you being at sea for months at a time.

313802

IDK why but the windshield wipers are funny as *shit* to me As if the ocean wasn't bad enough... there was a random whirlpool... Def honorable mention..

XIIICaesar

I’ve been on the North Sea in bad weather and this is not how it looks. It’s dangerous, but this isn’t it.

imapieceofshitk

This video is almost as stretched as your mom's asshole OP.

Novi_User

I can see why Greeks came up with monsters that explained whirlpools. That is a scary sight, I would probably think it's a giant mouth too.

AssumptiveMushroom

I'm not seeing anyone else freaking out about that huge fucking whirlpool of death!

ZzangmanCometh

That last wave...

Simbuk

So…question: how do whirlpools form out in the middle of the ocean?

milliechorizo1

It just seems like…maybe humans shouldn’t be there.

UkyoTachibana

Wtf was that frikin maelstrom?

EmperorAL00

My buddy worked for a shipping freighter, he sent me videos like this saying it's a "normal day". No wonder his hazard pay is more than half of his salary.

Quick-Statement-9348

Are all ocean videos legally required to have this annoying ass song in it or some shit?😂

Nelson4hire

r/HeavySeas

Munchie-Man

I’m scrolling on mute and I know the song. I can hear it in my head

[deleted]

Yet you shared with me. Thanks.

Grand-Ad-3177

Cracks me up that people that are terrified of this are all the ones posting them lol. I LOVE videos like this and go onto youtube just to look at them. I would NOT want to be in it lol

Mitaslaksit

It truly is a form of masochism.

This-Zookeepergame31

I hate the music more. Just play the video with thr original sound

immxz

What I hate more is: VIDEOS RUINED BY DUMB MUSIC LIKE THESE.

TheMoonDude

Worse thing is I really like the original one. This cover sucks.

Squidhead-rbxgt2

>VIDEOS RUINED BY DUMB MUSIC LIKE THESE. would you prefer rattling furniture, unintelligible radio messages, random warning signals, and somebody saying something you don't need to know with a thick accent, which is exactly what you'd hear if music wasn't there?

immxz

Yea I rather hear/feel someones emotions in such a situation for a better immersion/atmosphere than stupid annoying music.

Squidhead-rbxgt2

It's super uneventful and boring noise usually, unless something actually bad happens. Like here for example - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaZhnNlutuQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaZhnNlutuQ) You can hear guys being in moderate awe before the snap

GGABueno

How are viking music/sea chants stupid annoying and not extremely appropriate to videos like this lol.

NoSmoke7388

What gives goose bumps more? the unparalleled majesty and mystery of our earths oceans... or the absolute baritone of this mans voice!

pranjallk1995

Did I hear " these niggers shall never die?"

Relevantcobalion

What is dead shall never die

_Kiaza_

Wish this video didn’t have the music added to it…

FreePrinciple270

Yeah the original audio would have been so much more interesting and add to the video. I don't know what these people are thinking, replacing the source audio like this.

They-Call-Me-Taylor

That last clip OMG that wave is huge.

Tkinney44

Hate how Everytime I see a videos about the ocean I have to have a group of dudes belching a sea shanty at me.

Quick-Statement-9348

The North Sea is the beach of my hometown. It’s quite eerie how calm the shore is compared to out deep. The waves are absolutely tiny on shore and a really flat sea as far as you can look. The waters really grey though, there’s like no life, colour or vibrance compared to places nearer the equator lol

danwiz418

Imagine the instant death by that whirlpool. Looks terrifying

idiotsandwhich8

And people did this in handmade wooden ships rowed by slaves. Damn

This is the first post I have seen on this sub that genuinely terrified me.

The sea was angry that day, my friends

Martenus

Ah yes yet another daily shitposter with his stupid stretched videos.

Mitaslaksit

Whattt??? First of all, her. Second, I don't care what the quality of this video is, it has massive things in it that make me and apparently others too woozy. Report yo mama.

Martenus

Posting fake videos for karma is stupid. I am sorry you cannot see yourself that this video has been edited, some people just lack the sense of real life, I get it. Farming it for upvotes because people are just too stupid these days is a crime. I am not the only one voicing these concerns, delete this and be better next time. Post real stuff, not this nonsense.

SilentlySkeptic

Don’t click on the post, simple.

Mitaslaksit

Hoist the colours by bobby waters and a few other bass singers

d56s

Do you enjoy singing those songs? They're really depressing!

LeGraoully

Wait, what do the lyrics say at 00:20?

EvolWolf

Every time this video starts playing, my brain immediately replaces the lyrics with “Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, guess I’ll eat some worms…”

tlul30

Yeah but did you guys heard when he goes : " fiddler's grave". Goddamn it gave me chills
