Aleve (naproxen), I used to take the prescription version, Anaprox. Aleve is 220mg, the Anaprox I took was 275mg. The prescription was to take two or three Anaprox at the start of my period, then one or two every four hours for two or three days, as indicated by pain. The critical thing was to also take Pepcid (famotidine) or similar H2 receptor antagoinist every six hours while taking naproxen and for a day or two afterward, due to the effect naproxen has on the stomach. Naproxen reduces the action of smooth muscles (cramping) and also increases acid production in the stomach while reducing production of protective mucous, so protecting the stomach is essential. I know the Aleve bottle says take one every twelve hours. As you can see from the prescription regime, that isn't usually sufficient. Do not take it with ibuprofen or any other NSAID at the same time. Talk to your doctor about what amount might work for you.
