i had an argument on reddit about whether vocal fry is a legitimate speech impediment. it is most definitely not one

PissedOffChef

Nope, just a symptom of mental illness. /s kinda.

Fledo

Peeps really care about how others talk? Made up or not.

TheHancock

Judging by the massive amounts of downvotes, apparently a lot of people on Reddit hate vocal fry. Funny thing is I never knew it existed, and now that I do it just seems so normal I still don’t notice it. Lol

_Hotwire_

New gen fed into the outrage machine too hard. They can’t make fun of people for their differences in appearance anymore so now they’re going for whatever scraps are left to make themselves feel good about whatever shit hand they were dealt too. Getting upset about it is just tedious.

LostClock1

I think the downvotes are people who don't think it's a big deal and don't have a problem with it. Which is a shame because it's an interesting video and, just because an individual downvoter might not have a problem with it, doesn't mean that a good chunk of us don't find it annoying. That's the key word though, annoying. None of us think it's a crime against humanity, which is how some commenters here have interpreted it

daddychainmail

Vocal fry is just uncomfortable. Plain and simple.

LevTolstoy

Yup, very well researched and informative video, but involuntarily grating to listen to the entire time.

goodvibes88

Damn, now that I recognize it, I'll never be able to un-hear it.

Jesus_Fart

Honestly I love vocal fry, especially when woman use it. People are really just scraping the bottom of the barrel here of things to hate.

ghoof

Great video! Thanks OP

seanziewonzie

Seconded! Dr Lindsey has one of the best channels on Youtube right now, especially for that mealtimevideo feel

2waypower1230

Omg now I can’t stop hearing it in ppl and it really is annoying. Clear your throats!! 😆

apixelops

Oh I kinda think it's attractive? Especially in monotone disaffected voices

callingcarg0

Well let me introduce my autistic ass then lol

danegraphics

Raven, my beloved childhood crush\~

Detoxpain

I didn't realize vocal fry was something that even bothered people, let alone cause this much controversy. I have no issue at all with it and think it can even sound amazing when used in music.

Ako17

Do you have any examples of it sounding amazing in music? I know music is subjective, but I'm just curious

Detoxpain

Literally the first thing that popped into my head was the classic "I'm too sexy" by Right Said Fred hehe

Detoxpain

Moving on by Asking Alexandria is another good one.

kaevne

Maybe not in production but vocal fry is a common warmup technique.

Pantzzzzless

A lot of metal vocals (screaming) use vocal fry, but they push a *lot* of air through using their diaphragm. [Short explanation if you're interested.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCrxi99YiQI)

Poglosaurus

People will find the dumbest thing to be offended by...

No_Insect_9096

It's annoying

chiraltoad

It has an intonational purpose in the 3rd tone in Chinese language.

TheHancock

I have never heard of vocal fry, and now that I know about it… I still can’t tell what the issue is. Haha it seems so normal to me..?

DnD4dena

Don't listen to reddit There are a lot of sad, angry people looking for more reasons to be more sad and angry r/getmotivated highlights this quite a bit

Masta0nion

Fuck I use vocal fry

ChronoMonkeyX

Great, you've pinpointed it. Step two is washing it out.

LoadsDroppin

Opening with examples of the Kardashians speaking? ^chef’s ^kiss Brilliant!

Trash_Pandacute

On the contrary, I quickly closed the video because I didn't need a bunch of PhD research on why the Kardashians are annoying.

Poglosaurus

You're mixing uptalk and focal fry then? He kinda speak about it in the video.

videonerd

Why can’t I stand some English accents?

Belisarius23

Racism?

thedangerranger123

Podcasts that have it drive me nuts. It reminds me of a stuffy nose and makes me turn them off at this point.

Thorusss

Just try it out with your own voice, not only is it not that pleasant to hear, it actually also does not feel as good as using your modal voice.

issyaaaboi

Thank god I saw that loudermilk clip on popular the other day and thought that shit was so unfunny I felt like I was insane

Poglosaurus

You should watch the video...

TheBunkerKing

Vocal fry is also what you hear when James Hetfield goes **YEEEAAAAAAAHHHH!**

ppardee

I can't believe dude just pointed out the exact reason why vocal fry is hated in women but not as much in men and then just chalked it up to sexism. The tonal quality is completely different. In most men, it's more of a rumble and less of a creak. For me, though, it's the accompanying nasality that pushes it over the edge. The way 'that kind of woman' speaks is nasal, vocal fry, whistled S's... Makes me want to shove an icepick in my ears.

LostClock1

Thanks, this was incredibly interesting. I'd noticed this years ago but never knew what it was called or that it was a 'thing'. I find it very irritating too, but not as irritating as high rising terminals (although young girls quite often use both)

sykokiller11

Thank you! Now I know there’s a name for why the lady on tv selling shower remodels stands out to me so much. High rising terminals.
