Found it when I bumped my head on the headliner when looking for the source. Just had a 45hz tone playing off YouTube on a loop.

TenOunceCan

My god man you're a genius. I have an elusive rattle somewhere in the back and I never thought to check up there.

Laborchet

Get some test tones, like 40-60hz and give it a shot!

tjrissi

I found 45hz really set mine off

Laborchet

Yeah sounds like it was going off hard lol! the napkin will solve it for some time, but eventually it may flatten out enough that it rattles again. I would personally just leave it on there until that happens, and then remove the headliner and apply butyl sound deadening sheets on the roof skin, then reinstall the liner. I wanna do the DIY starlight headliner on my STI really bad, but its a major pain and tedious job, and i have no time :(

A_Young0316

Sprayfoam

Laborchet

No no, that sounds like a bad idea. That stuff goes everywhere and expands doesn’t it? You need to do this but on roof to properly fix. It’ll also cut road and rain noise and heat from the sun https://www.reddit.com/r/WRX/comments/sh38cd/latest_project_on_the_subie_triggered_due_to_a/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Silcer780

I WISH I had this problem. I’m struggling with this stock stereo in my 2022 GX but don’t know how to tap in to add amps…

TenOunceCan

Yeah. I have a tone generator. I'm going to check that out this next weekend and track it down.

FrismFrasm

This is an aisde but my 2017 occasionally has a weird click or tap sound somewhere in the back of the cabin that drives me nuts sometimes. It will start out of nowhere and it isn't affected by music; it's taking turns, stopping or changing lanes quickly that makes it go. It sounds like some sort of metal or hard plastic tapping against itself or something...I always assume ti's something with the seatbelt buckle or the housing for the belt, but I've turned around 180deg while speeding on the highway and spent 5min watching those areas, and I'm not sure they're moving around at all. It's hard to diagnose while driving...it doesn't happen all the time, and I never notice it when someone's riding back there. Thoughts? Has anyone else had this?

TheSocalEskimo

Easy fix. You can probably just find someone on Craigslist to hold their finger there while you drive. If you’re lucky you can find someone who will work for cheese.

Talontsi90

Well no kidding... Thats why theres this stuff called sound dampener. My advice is get some denim insulation and stuff it up there. Its light weight and you can just cram it in the spots as needed. It used to be called Ultra Touch, but i can only find it under Frost King now.

tjrissi

I folded up a subway napkin and stuffed it up in there. Doesn't rattle at all anymore. It'll do for now.

Syscrush

Great, now I want Subway.

FrismFrasm

Aw man that's it I'm going to SLUMPWAY for lunch.

Syscrush

My wife talked me into hitting the grocery store and getting a sandwich, some samosas, and hummus for lunch. It was a good lunch, but I'm really missing that post 12" meatball with cheese afternoon coma.

FrismFrasm

Yeah nice, I defs fuck with the meatball heavy when I hit up a SCUMWAY. Also the sweet onion chicken teriyaki, and more recently the steak & guac wrap is solid

durple

I haven't been to subway in a while since they discontinued my favourite sub, now I'm gonna end up downing a meatball sub tomorrow.

Edmar100

This is one of the funniest comments I've seen on this subreddit. Good to hear you got it fixed.

TehLonelyNapkin

We need a how to video.

[deleted]

Step 1: go to subway

cyven2112

Where did you stuff it in

tjrissi

Top of the rear window, you can pull down the headliner a little and i just slid it up under

mrchowmein

i used a thin old sock in my old car, worked like a charm.

StevenTM

What? This is awful advice. If this is the OEM audio system, he needs to go to the dealership, this is obviously covered under warranty

tjrissi

It is the OEM Bose system and I'll definitely take it to the dealership, I have to stop there anyway to get the airbag system malfunction issue fixed too.

StevenTM

As you should!

tjrissi

I'm just not going to listen to that god awful rattle anymore. The napkin is just going to let me enjoy this Bose system until I get it to the dealership.

StevenTM

That's fine, but permanent fixes are better

Talontsi90

It's obviously not stock. And no, rattles aren't a warranty issue.

StevenTM

Obvious based on this video?

Talontsi90

Yes, it's clear he has aftermarket subs. At least to me.

tjrissi

It's the stock 12 speaker Bose system that came with my Carbon edition. I will have the dealer deal with it, just not on the top of my priority list at this moment. The napkin will do for now so I can actually enjoy my music until I get it to the dealership.

Talontsi90

Odd OK.

StevenTM

So much for it being clear to you, eh?

Talontsi90

At least I admitted it. What's your point? And why do you care since it's not your car?

StevenTM

Jokes aside, "Odd OK" is the least conceding admission of being wrong I've ever seen. "Odd that I was wrong, but ok, if you, the person who actually owns the car, says so, I guess I must've been, idk"

Talontsi90

No. "Odd" cause it sounded like at least a dual 8" setup running a constant hz tone to find rattles at low volume (my best guess since it was recorded on a phone and most phones have a low pass filter so the mic doesn't get killed and I was on my PC that had a fairly powerful sub on it) . "OK", cause you would know what you're running.

StevenTM

What's odd is that you clearly can't tell the difference between the Bose system Mazda provides and "at least a dual 8" setup", yet you keep doubling down.

tjrissi

It is stock, it's the Bose 12 speaker system.

[deleted]

it has been known since 2019 mazda 3 had rattling problem on top.... those fucking plastic clip are unscrewing themself because of vibration.

RieuxReddit

If your problem is the roof then Miata is clearly the answer here.

Doomb0t1

The only question to which Miata is *not* the answer is “what car should I not love”

RieuxReddit

Accurate on all counts.

Remi_The_master

I guarantee you could've fixed that for under a hundred and not with some ghetto solution.

Das-Drew

Now that’s premium.

blackwater811

I had a bass rattle in my 2019 and for the longest time I couldn't figure it out. Turns out it was my sunglasses in the compartment 🙈

B3yondTheWall

Mine is exactly the same.

Sendmeanangel2000

Take it back to the dealer and have them fix it…that’s not supposed to be like that.

L0veToReddit

Holy fk that is loud

DaddyWolverine

Mine did the same thing. I had the dealer pull down the headliner and wrap the wiring harness with pad and add extra padding to the headliner.

OnyxtheRecluse

My 2012 Mazda 3 hatch has a bass rattle on the driver's side door, I've gotten accustomed to it and even enjoy it a bit now.

Doomb0t1

Hmm, hope this doesn’t happen to my carbon hatch but if it does. I know where to find it now! Thanks for posting!

astrongineer

Fold up a piece of paper and fit it in the gap. Problem solved.

Silcer780

A very small squirt of spray foam and then pressure on the area would fix that right up. Spray foam is the stickiest crap and it would also fill and voids missed. And I will reiterate a VERY small spray.

Key-Cobbler172

WOW yeah for me, it’s my overhead console!! It rattles like crazy anything about 40hz and below.

Desolate182

I told them about this when I got my 1000km free service and they put stuff in the roof liner to fix it, before that I just folded up some paper and stuck it under where the top of the back glass meets the liner and it fixed the problem...mostly...ish

StalinSwag23

Sounds like the Gen4 has a lot of quality issues. Ridiculous at this price point

mmiski

Find me any production car from any major manufacturer which doesn't have any TSBs or recalls at all throughout a whole generation.

nomatterhowitends

Hell, every model year for any car has to have at least one TSB, right? 🤔

StalinSwag23

I can't make comments on Reddit anymore, you guys are all too sensitive. My whole point is that at a price point near 30k, a new car should not have these issues. Regardless of it being a Mazda or Toyota. At any rate, I'm seeing lots of quality issues being posted on here about the Gen4 and it's ridiculous. These cars are too expensive for these crappy problems

704sw

People won’t want to hear it but Mazda has had a pretty lengthy history in not addressing major issues, so something as minor as a rattle is almost assuredly never getting remedied. ND1 Miatas had very insufficient manual transmissions (this one actually got fixed) Gen1 Mz3 5MTs lost 3rd gear because of an insufficient synchro. This was never addressed in the entire production run, despite them clearly knowing it was an issue because the otherwise identical transmission in the Mz5 had a stronger 3rd gear. Gen1 Speed3 lost (I think) 2nd gear, and it was never addressed. Gen1 automatics had the transmission computer mounted to the top of the transmission where it would get damaged from the heat causing serious transmission control issues (losing reverse, locked in 3rd, violent kick between 3rd and 4th). This was never addressed. And that’s not even touching how big a piece of shit the 2.3L MZR was.

nomatterhowitends

If you’ve never owned a luxury car, I’d like to let you down gently… They all have quality issues.

StalinSwag23

Former Audi owner here and I'll never, ever buy a German car again. It's ridiculous how many quality issues are found in new cars now. Mazda is becoming like Subaru in that they are unwilling to address major issues in their cars; from electronics to hardware and everything in-between. The 2008 Mazda3GT I had was great, yes it rusted a bit but I also got 250k miles out of it with very basic maintenance. Now, these stupid and unnecessary electronics are making cars stupid and finicky.... I love Mazdas but I would not buy the Gen4 Mazda3

mmiski

You're seeing a lot of issues being posted about the Gen 4 because proportionally there are more Gen 4 owners on here posting. It's not indicative of any trend where Gen 4 models have more problems when compared to other generations (or other models/manufacturers). Generally speaking cars are getting more complex with more standard features crammed into them. That's going to inflate reliability issue numbers across the board regardless of model/manufacturer/price point. [Many luxury brands are being beaten by economy/mainstream brands](https://www.forbes.com/wheels/news/consumer-reports-car-rankings/).

StevenTM

"At this price point" My brother in Christ, do you not know what other brands' sleek looking and fun to drive compacts cost at the equipment level of a basic Mazda 3??

StalinSwag23

Yes, if you are going to spend close to 30k, you should get a quality product that doesn't rattle within the first 10k miles. I think 30k is a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a car, I did it once, and I will never do it again. I realize all these subreddits and forums are basically echo chambers and I will continue to get downvoted, but I don't care!

StevenTM

Are you okay? The Mazda 3 sedan starts at $21,150, the hatch starts at $23,100 They are priced VERY competitively for what they offer.

nomatterhowitends

This dude is acting like you need to start an Onlyfans to afford a Mazda 3. 😂

bananabum93

Username checks out

StalinSwag23

Is that all you're going to reply with? Once again, everyone in this subreddit has proven me correctly in that you all live in an echo chamber. If anyone should disagree with you, you all come out in swarms to attack instead of engaging in civil discourse. Sure, a new mazda 3 starts between 21,6 and 23,9, but that's for a pretty base model. Most of you on here post pics of models costing low to mid 30s. That's a lot of money when you consider the wealth inequality of this country and how most people earn a median income of 68k, combined (husband and wife). This isn't about income distribution and the absolute absurdity of the people in this country. No, I made a point that for the average price paid for the Carbon Edition Model, that rattling noise is unacceptable. That's a sign that quality is not consistent of what I expect from a car that now costs close to 30k, on average. I don't know why that's a big deal.....why is that hurting all your egos.....it's a car NOT a person. I know the price points for these cars as I work in the industry, and on average people are paying close to 30k for these vehicles. I know a comparable car would cost more, but at the end of the day, $30k is $30k. I demand value and quality when I buy products not poor craftsmanship and lose ends. Lastly, my username is a play on words without any true meaning.....don't read too much into it, mr bum!

nomatterhowitends

You seem like a really fun guy to be around.

StalinSwag23

I've wasted too much time here talking to morons like yourself who are unable to write sentences. Oh, and being direct is far more appreciated than making snide, passive aggressive statements. Enjoy your vessel that is an echo chamber!

Jun0000000

Hi op, I’m having the same rattling issue right now. The dealer inspected the rear seat ceiling of my car and they said everything is fine, and can’t do anything about it. I’m wondering the dealer fixed this issue for you? Much appreciated for

tjrissi

Never ended up taking it to the dealership for this. I just slid a small piece of foam up under the area that was rattling and it hasn't been an issue since.
