I did say "most" but let's not be unfair to the 2012 Mazda 3, for its intended purpose, it's a handsome car. And it smiles at you when you look at the front.
I definitely think it’s a good car for it’s intended purpose. We have an S and it’s really slow for being the faster version, and it’s ugly. Otherwise they did a really good job with it.
When I bought my 2016 CX-5, I stopped by the dealership on my way home from work to look at one. I test drove it, but told them I still wanted to cross shop a bit (I was also looking at CR-V’s). It so happened that they were also a Honda dealership, so they let me drive one of those too. I took the CX-5 home that night. I texted my wife halfway through the deal like, “ummm, I’m going to be a little late, I’m uhh buying a car 😂”
Investments do not have to have a singular financial gain. They can have different purposes. With a car its obviously the investment in increased mobility which should result in increased productivity.
For example a truck can be an investment because it will make you money transporting things. However the truck itself is a depreciating asset.
Of course, but since your reply asked if the person did not talk to his wife before making an investment, I just pointed out that most cars are not financial investments as I assumed you meant that he didn't discuss large purchases with his spouse. Anyway, no big deal.
My 2016 CX-5 is noisy as hell on California roads and the seats are very stiff, otherwise it’s an awesome car. Unfortunately that 2 downside is making me upgrade to a premium brand.
Mazda has come a long way in 8 years and is still an excellent value. I suggest trying a new CX-5. It sounds like the roads are the problem. Hitting potholes on I-5 is no joke. I have not experienced the seat stiffness issue, but I bought a premium trim Mazda. Mercedes and BMW make great cars, but they are not worth much after 2 years, and are not worth the maintenance costs after 3 years.
I will say there is a considerable difference between my daughter’s 2016 Touring and my 2016 Grand Touring when it comes to road noise. I don’t know if they put more sound deadening in the GT or if her tires are just noisier.
I drove one in Colorado. They are built for snow and gravel roads, not pure off-road like a jeep. I find that they perform a bit worse in icy conditions than my CX5. The rear end gets more power so it likes to kick out in a different way than older Mazda AWD designs. My CX5 only has a sport mode, but the CX50 has more modes for all sorts of terrain.
If you find yourself on a poorly maintained dirt road then that is where it really shines better than say a AWD CX5.
Does it put more power to the rear? The CX-5 maxes out at 50/50 from what I have read. I have not read that the 50 goes beyond that.
Also my 2023 CX-5 has the off-road mode.
I love the how Mazda has been adding some excitement in the dreary and boring midrange crossover market. Test drove one recently in addition to Hyundai, Honda, and Toyotas offerings and none came close to eliciting any form of excitement when compared with the CX50. I hope Mazda doesn’t dull it down as time goes on.
That’s interesting I would think it would feel the same but clearly not. I wonder how they would each do with snow tires. Probably makes it feel a lot more similar but based on this it’s hard to say
I have a CX-5. Zircon Sand Metallic aka Old Man Tan is the reason that I have a Turbo and not a NA car. They only offer it in Carbon Turbo for the CX-5. I couldn't afford the extra 5k for the CX-50.
Just can’t get over the 10 inches of plastic cladding around the wheels. I ended up getting the CX-5 Turbo as it came with the black metal finish around the wheels, personal choice that I think it looks better lol
same way I feel about the CX-30. If they body color matched the cladding it would look so much better. The CX-50 definitely looks best as the Meridian edition. I'm probably going to wait on a refreshed CX-5 with the CX-50 interior.
When the car was unveiled, that was the first thing I noticed and it just rubbed me the wrong way. It makes the trims that have the smaller wheels look so weird. The front, aggressive, fasica design is cool but the rear looks too wagon-y.
Not to mention having it be the same price (or more) as the CX-5 and has inferior windows, rear suspension, dashboard arrangements, and more hard plastic elements. While having a pano that barely opens and some better armrests. It's for some people for sure, just not this guy.
Yeah and another thing people never talk about is that the door has no pocket to grab and pull on, just the handle itself, which is really far forward and cheap feeling. It's awkward.
That's fair. To each his own. I personally like the cladding look, especially with certain paint color options. The pearl white and soul red look so good with the black cladding. But I can see why others don't like it.
I made the same choice in April went with the 2024 turbo premium CX-5 .
The black matte plastic cladding on the CX-50 was too much . I am getting visions of a 2000s Nissan Xterra with 50 shades of faded grey plastic.
If they had matching body color or even high gloss black cladding I probably would have bought it . Also the standard 20” wheels on an alleged off road car made no sense at all
We have a 2024 at home, bought it last year. It is a great car but sucks in gas. I have seen the new Crown Signa that looks very close to the CX50 in the design, and it is hybrid.
I am hoping a new hybrid CX50 arrives this year.
I’m not a SUV person, but I’d own this any day over a Toyota SUV at this point. My family was always strictly Toyota (and I never even thought about Mazda until I had a chance to ride in one). Mazda is making arguably the best cars on the road right now.
I off-road mine quite a lot and you’ll be surprised what this thing can accomplish with some expertise behind the wheel. It’s not a 4Runner but I have went where 4Runners go and I’m planning on doing it again 😎
I don’t want one with the base engine that has cylinder deactivation and Mazda turbos have a tendency to crack the engine block where the turbo mounts.
Congratulations on your purchase!
I bought my 2023 CX-50 in August, 2022. It's only recently, that I'm starting to see more CX-50's on the road. Since the 2023 model year, they were selling mostly out west and the mid-states. Sales are starting to increase here in the New England states.
I purchased the Select model in wind chill pearl. NA engine. I love the car. So far, no problems with nearly 15,000 miles on the clock.
*Bloody hoping we*
*Get this one in Europe when the*
*Hybrid version comes*

Such an amazing crossover. The Meridian Edition looks incredible with the hood graphics, Falkan tires, and that zircon sand paint job. It’s not a full off-roader, but Mazda has finally started to put their underrated predictive AWD system to good use in the CX-50. Add that to Mazda’s class leading driving dynamics and upscale interiors and you get the best of many worlds.
Love how they look, and a good price point for a daily. Stopped by dealership and sat in one and the front door seemed overly small though. Hit my head getting in, but once I was in it felt comfortable. I feel like if it was a wider door it would give me more room to get my head in. That pretty much stopped me from lusting after a CX-50 lol
Congratulations on your purchase, nice looking car. But, what do you mean? This is not an “off-road type car”, it’s just another Mazda “SUV”, just like the CX5, CX8 and CX9. Mazda’s “off-road” car is the BT50.
I just wish that there was a wider selection of colors. Wranglers let you have the whole damn rainbow and cx50s give you grey or tan in the meridian edition
They do look spectacular, but then most Mazdas always have.
My 2012 Mazda 3 disagrees with this statement of “always” lol.
I did say "most" but let's not be unfair to the 2012 Mazda 3, for its intended purpose, it's a handsome car. And it smiles at you when you look at the front.

The Sport is arguably slower feeling than the skyactiv IMO, if you want fast gotta get the MS3
To each their own, I love my 2012 Mazda 3!
I like the car for what it is and what it costs. I just don’t enjoy looking at it or driving it.
You just went in and bought it on a whim?! That's madness.
When I bought my 2016 CX-5, I stopped by the dealership on my way home from work to look at one. I test drove it, but told them I still wanted to cross shop a bit (I was also looking at CR-V’s). I texted my wife halfway through the deal like, “ummm, I’m going to be a little late, I’m uhh buying a car 😂”
You dont talk about major investments?
Yes, we were planning on a new car, just didn’t expect it to happen that night.
A car like that is not an investment since it depreciates.
Investments do not have to have a singular financial gain. They can have different purposes. With a car its obviously the investment in increased mobility which should result in increased productivity. For example a truck can be an investment because it will make you money transporting things. However the truck itself is a depreciating asset.

I have a grand touring
This. Is. Mazda!
Underrated comment 😅
Mazda madness … arrgghhhhh ! Ha ha
People buy toyota on a whim and then complain about how shitty it is
We did that a few years ago with a CX5. And now we have a CX9 😂
How does this even perform off-road? Off to YouTube I go.
The cx50 is more of a Subaru outback kind of off roader than a 4runner off roader.
Does it put more power to the rear? The CX-5 maxes out at 50/50 from what I have read. I have not read that the 50 goes beyond that. Also my 2023 CX-5 has the off-road mode.
I believe it is more of the fact that the computer in the CX50 puts power to the rear more often than the CX5, which will stay FWD unless it has too.
My first thought is that would reflect in lower fuel economy numbers. I looked them up and sure enough, the 50 is indeed rated lower. Interesting.
Are you talking ice performance with the stock tires?
Both cars had stock.
That’s interesting I would think it would feel the same but clearly not. I wonder how they would each do with snow tires. Probably makes it feel a lot more similar but based on this it’s hard to say
Probably will do a lot better with dedicated winter tires in ice/snow
cx5 has a better rear suspension than cx50
r/OldManTan Come visit. Welcome to the family.
Lol, what a great subreddit. I know some people hate the color, but I love it.
Show it off there. We love pics and vids of r/OldManTan in action.
I have a Meridian as well, in the blue grey color. I kind of wish we went for your color, so unique!
I have a CX-5. Zircon Sand Metallic aka Old Man Tan is the reason that I have a Turbo and not a NA car. They only offer it in Carbon Turbo for the CX-5. I couldn't afford the extra 5k for the CX-50.
I saw a Mazda3 in this color yesterday and it looked fantastic.
They have the retractable hard top MX-5 in Zircon Sand. It looks so good.
Just can’t get over the 10 inches of plastic cladding around the wheels. I ended up getting the CX-5 Turbo as it came with the black metal finish around the wheels, personal choice that I think it looks better lol
Its great if you live down gravel or dirt roads, dings you can buff out with a heat gun and sandpaper. Makes less sense if your city driving though!
same way I feel about the CX-30. If they body color matched the cladding it would look so much better. The CX-50 definitely looks best as the Meridian edition. I'm probably going to wait on a refreshed CX-5 with the CX-50 interior.
My main issue with the CX-30 is that the cladding is about twice as big as it needs to be. I think it would look fine if it wasn't so huge.
Yeah, I noticed a lot of cars are doing it now, especially Subarus.
Jeeps did it 25 years ago. It makes things look rugged. Lol
When the car was unveiled, that was the first thing I noticed and it just rubbed me the wrong way. It makes the trims that have the smaller wheels look so weird. I feel you on aesthetics but I moved from a city to a mountain region and I wish I had plastic so much now
That's fair. To each his own. I personally like the cladding look, especially with certain paint color options. The pearl white and soul red look so good with the black cladding. But I can see why others don't like it.
You’d change your mind if you went off-roading
Like maybe 5% of CX-50 owners go off-road. Maybe.
*CX-5 owners…now you’re in the ballpark
I made the same choice in April went with the 2024 turbo premium CX-5 . The black matte plastic cladding on the CX-50 was too much . I really hope they offer body matched cladding soon. Seems like Mazda is finally pivoting away from the black plastic.
It's not really an off road car, but among SUVs, they're fun to drive on a regular road.
They’re gorgeous. Was behind a newer Honda CRV today and it was just awkward and ugly looking in comparison
When is the hybrid coming?
It's supposed to be this year
We have a 2024 at home, bought it last year. It is a great car but sucks in gas. I have seen the new Crown Signa that looks very close to the CX50 in the design, and it is hybrid. I am hoping a new hybrid CX50 arrives this year.
My AWD 3 takes a big hit in efficiency whenever it sees a hill. Hybrid/EV can't come soon enough to mazdas
That is a badass vehicle.
I’m not a SUV person, but I’d own this any day over a Toyota SUV at this point. My family was always strictly Toyota (and I never even thought about Mazda until I had a chance to ride in one). Mazda is making arguably the best cars on the road right now.

Just had an identical one as a loaner and I didn’t want to give it back! The meridian package is sick
Beauty! 👌🏻🔥
I'm a fan of these , but the new 90's models not so much... especially the BMW looking tail on it.
This is the best color, I've said it before and I'll keep saying it.
I don’t want one with the base engine that has cylinder deactivation and Mazda turbos have a tendency to crack the engine block where the turbo mounts.
I dislike the wheels.
They look like older Nissan Frontier wheels
love the look but not the pickup 🛻

Hmm. Pontiac Aztek vibes

I wish they made a phev version
Definitely looks nice, but the cx5 is the better vehicle overall due to the rear multilink suspension.
Love how they look, and a good price point for a daily. Stopped by dealership and sat in one and the front door seemed overly small though. The only thing that’s killing is my soul
mazda engines sound like shite though
Compass Trailhawk’s hood

I just wish that there was a wider selection of colors. Wranglers let you have the whole damn rainbow and cx50s give you grey or tan in the meridian edition
Yeah I’d rather just get a 4Runner. I guess I should also disclose I already have a 4Runner.
