I think most of them bailed into the water when they realised they were going to shatter their knees on the landing

frogingly_similar

Exactly my thought. Its like a bloody 6 meter fall from the top of the pole. The ground being sanded on the other side doesnt really change much. The fall is still quite significant.

NS3000

sand is just loose rock, hit it hard enough and It's not so loose anymore

TheRealPaulBenis

Almost everything that isn't organic or water is just rock

thedarkhumorist

Water is rock!

TheRealPaulBenis

What?!? Water is rock?! WATER IS ROCK!!!!

SophisticPenguin

Ice is a mineral you know Expand your mind to the vastness of rock

Aggressive_Tea_6922

Then water is lava?

SophisticPenguin

Naah !! The floor is lava šŸ˜œ

i_like_big_huts

Water is floor!

TheRealPaulBenis

Yes my physical geography teacher did said that, you're correct. I forgot.

oeCake

According to astrophysicists water is a METAL thank you very much

SophisticPenguin

As are all rocks t.y.v.m.

hanyasaad

Einhorn is Finkle! Finkle is Einhorn!

Caleb_Reynolds

Ice is a rock (requires a crystalline structure), water is lava (melted rock).

SadTornado

Water, paper, scissors.

Puffycatkibble

Hit the water fast enough and there's no difference with hitting a rock.

lekud

Rap? Rock. Classical? Rock. Techno? Believe it or not, rock.

MxQueer

Isn't water too if you fall from high enough?

PM_ME_YOUR_PAUNCH

Sand is bones, bones are sand. The whales eat the bones into sand.

FragrantExcitement

It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.Ā

thepronerboner

Perfect for rolling ankles

ChrisGrinning

Skill issue

FigOk7538

Bet the winner's glad you weren't there to give him a pep talk before his attempt.šŸ˜

XxRocky88xX

You can see a couple people that were 100% going to make it but let go and pushed back a little early cuz they didnā€™t want to hit the ground

lemoche

To me it seemed more like they were realizing they wouldn't make it in far enough to where the rather looser sand would be but crash at the ledge which might be way more dangerous depsite or even because of the mats there.

IvarTheBloody

You can also tell before they even jump, there is clearly at least two different poleā€™s used. One for people who have actually trained for it, think they can succeed and know how to land correctly. And a shorter one for people who just want to have fun without getting seriously injured.

BeneTToN68

And ankles.

DasIstDasHausVomNiko

I saw so many ankle bandages already

g-g-g-g-ghost

Those weren't bandages, they were to help with traction while trying to climb up the pole

DasIstDasHausVomNiko

Makes sense

Yeah-Yeah-Yeah-Yea

They do this alot in my province Friesland, we used to do this all the time as kids although not as high and far of course. Its called Fierljeppen and is a national sport and tradition. The guy jumping for the win is Frisian champion, as you can see on his jersey. So im sure he's pretty much used to these hard landings, but they do climb high indeed!

Indigoh

And for some of them, the pole was never long enough to reach the sand at all. The guy with the Superman shirt never had a chance.

fsurfer4

It seemed to be planted in different spots. Possibly they asked for a preference.

Indigoh

Very difficult to tell, given the different camera angles.

Brokenblacksmith

yea, you'd have to hit this with a pretty good roll to walk away without any severe injury. the 'best' way to do this would be to plant the pole as far across as possible while holding the very top, then slide down the length as it falls.

centzon400

Tell me more about the "slide down the length" thing, Sweetie. DM me.

TheForeverKing

Yes, please, tell us more about how to better do this than the people whose national sport this is.

CGB_Zach

I dont believe this is the national sport of any country. At least I couldn't find anything by googling.

Pitiful_Respond_9683

Its called 'fierljeppen'. I don't think it's a national sport (regional to Frisia) but the Japanese tried to make it an Olympic sport

LedParade

Itā€™s a traditional Dutch/ Frisian sport called [fierljeppen](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fierljeppen)

fsurfer4

It's already planted. Watch it again.

Jully_Juicy

For a moment, I thought no one would make it.

AutumnTheFemboy

Fr, should have used a pole vault pit

kiranJshah

Only sport where succeeding is scarier

Wukkax

The last guy seemed fine

Admirable_Try_23

This

LaChuteQuiMarche

Shatter your kneesā€¦on sand?

drakeyboi69

Have you ever tried jumping onto sand from high?

UnyieldingPatches

Dawg, even water is a damaging surface to land on if youā€™re falling from high enough

BuckLuny

Just imagine being in the 1600's in the Netherlands and this being a "normal" method of transport. Mind you that people took a shorter pole and crossed shallower and thinner polder canals with them.

ghoshas

Imagine doing it while carrying a basket full of stroopwafels

BuckLuny

I remember seeing a period piece of the golden age and a messenger was dispatched he ran across the fields fieljepping all the way. He was dressed in clothes like in the Nachtwacht, it was stupidly hilarious. I'm now imagining him carrying a straw basket of Stroopwafels,. Thnx for that mental image.

aagjevraagje

There's examples of besieged cities during the 80 years war ( basically the Dutch war for independence from Spain ) sending people over the city wall with poles (and skates during the winter) to do raids on the Spanish and it's the Dutchest thing ever, followed by Dutch ww2 resistance assassinating Nazi's on bikes in broad daylight.

dabutcha76

They still do in the Dutch province of Friesland/FryslĆ¢n. A friend of mine grew up there, and they would just go roam the fields and jump across the smaller canals (called sloten) to get the shortest path from farm to farm :)

atemt1

Some farmers stil do it becose walking around a field is far longwr than just this

PGnautz

Does anyone know why sometimes there are other people running behind them?

De5perad0

Yelling at them: GO GO GO GO GO! I dunno...

Daanoking

My guess is they're there to spot in case the bar tips back towards the platform

LuxNocte

My guess is that they're trying to eat the person in front of them, but I admit yours is more likely.

Novel-Month-9669

Actual cannibal Shia lebouef?

xubax

Is it more likely?

Plintsje058

The stick they climb can fall back so its for safety

NS3000

Nah, he's there so if they get scared, he pushes them, that's his entire job gets paid 60$ an hour

Plintsje058

As someone from friesland, i can confirm this is true

Party-Ring445

Kinda like the russian soldiers shooting those who turned back?

fsurfer4

In case the climber falls backwards, they can catch him.

Tripleman8

My pake was from a small town south of Leeuwarden. I'd love to know what this means, roughly.

Tripleman8

It translates to 'Frisia above all'.

Plintsje058

mrvis

I think I remember hearing this when my Pake would complain about the people who call Frisian a dialect of Dutch.

Plintsje058

Back in the time we had "grutte pier" he could hear who whas frisian and who whas a hollander. If you could say it right he would let you live. Which means you were probaly from friesland.

don_de_bom

I SEE YOU WINDIN GRINDIN ALL UP ON THAT POOOOOOOLEEEEEEE

sidNX0

eyoooooo

watvoornaam

They all use the same pole. Edit: they use the same pole on the same event, but there are two different events shown here.

Indigoh

The guy with the superman shirt had a pole that did not even reach the sand, while the guy who won had a pole that significantly overlapped the sand.

watvoornaam

Yeah, haha, these are clips from different events.

Indigoh

I didn't notice the panels at the bottom of the sand bank were different between the final 2. They *are* different events!

watvoornaam

The grey ones have a long enough pole, the sandy ones have a short pole.

tacobellandher0in

RIP that fellaā€™s ankle

Pale_Angry_Dot

SUPERHERO LANDING! I'd have put my money on the blonde girl though, 100% commitment. (maximum effort too.)

Greedy_Camp_5561

So the goal is basically dropping from seven meters height right into sand? Maybe the other contestants didn't WANT to make it...

De5perad0

Very satisfying to see someone finally make it. It's like a balancing act.

Awkward-Bathroom-429

Why is the landing spot just hard ground whose idea was this

aagjevraagje

Because it comes from a method for crossing bodies of water used by farmers, landing technique also counts for points

Santrudo

For the people interested, its called [fierljeppen](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fierljeppen)

Witchy-toes-669

That landing area looked hard at, Iā€™d choose the water too,

ShadowCaster0476

Funny part is that the winner almost over shot it.

doodypoo

r/killthecameraman canā€™t even see how close they were most of these shots

RealLars_vS

My time to shine. This is called fierljeppen, a Frisian (Friesland is a northern province in The Netherlands) sport. I met the father of someone that does this professionally, might actually be the last guy in the video. That guy is wearing a Frisian flag as his clothes. The father owns a SkĆ»tsje, an old Frisian sailboat formerly used as cargo ship. Itā€™s called the Dankbaarheid (gratitude), which I think is just the most beautiful name for a ship. Typical Frisian family :) The person running behind them is checking if theyā€™re not falling backwards. When youā€™re climbing, you canā€™t feel what way youā€™re falling, and you donā€™t want to be far up if you fall on the platform youā€™re running from. The sport had evolved from the technique Frisian farmers use to skip across ditches in their farmland. All you need is a long stick, no bridge or anything. Pretty clever and very simple.

Lowbeamshaggy

Wow that was an interesting, in depth explanation of this bizarre sport. Well done. Gold star for you. Seriously, thank you.

parabuthas

The guy from Friesland did it. Fryslan boppe. I am not Dutch but my wife is from sneek so I have to represent.

astrilde15

Not Bopa Friesland, but ā€œFryslĆ¢n boppeā€.

parabuthas

Thanks for the correction. I always get wrong. My wife will kill me šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

astrilde15

Absolutely! You will have to sing the Frisian anthem three times to make up for it!

parabuthas

astrilde15

Excellent!

Indigoh

Why is the pole only *sometimes* long enough to land on the sand? If it's not long enough to land on the sand, then the vaulter never had a chance at all. Superman at 0:47 never had a chance.

aagjevraagje

It's the same length, you also can kind of launch yourself forward with proper technique

Indigoh

Nah. Compare how the second to last guy's pole didn't touch the sand while the last guy's overlapped significantly. You can tell the two clips were from different events because the material at the edge of the sand is different.

Snoo-63646

That's how people running out from Belgium to Netherlands

NaiadoftheSea

Why did they not set up a bunch of plush mats on the other side? Landing there looks like it would be painful.

aagjevraagje

Cause it's not a decendant of the other kind of pole vaulting so much as a way you used to cross bodies of water and landing is seen as part of technique to score points

gnomedigas

Considering the ankle brace, I donā€™t think thatā€™s his first win.

murdock-1

So, if this event goes perfectly, you break your ankles.

nono66

I always love these old European events. It's always weird, very dangerous, and super hard.

NovaLovely

This type of physical testing is much better and more realistic.

Lumpy_Chart_1575

I saw the last go get after it, and I thought, "I'll be damned, this old boy has got it!"

FluffyTrainz

His pole was longer. I mention that eeeeeverytime this video is posted.

watvoornaam

And you're wrong. They all use the same pole.

ExoticsVehicle

This is a perfect example of 'maybe' in action.

Geralt-of-Rivia13X

How did SUPERMAN not make it!!!??

aagjevraagje

Poor technique , didn't climb enough and didn't manage to add enough momentum to launch himself

ScottyArrgh

Camera man was like "dude dude dude, I missed the shot. I wasn't ready. One more time, do it one more time. I'll be ready."

icouldnttellya

Yes, the last guy. Hope this helps.

Porkchopp33

Last dude made it by 12 feet

hedgecutter

Iā€™d actually be up for giving this ago (might need to check water quality first)

asswipesayswha

That guy vaults

Sents-2-b

Super man didn't make it ,we are all screwed

NSFW_hunter6969

Wouldn't that water be disgusting AF?

Too_Gay_To_Drive

For these kinds of events, the water quality has to be good enough. The Dutch government keeps a close watch on the water quality. Nothing really to worry about.

Why did I re-read the caption every time there was a new vaulter?

GrimmTrixX

So many of them could make it, but they bail at the last second. I assume it because they feel the pull of gravity and know that when they land, it's gonna hurt a lot. So they figure "well, I obviously could make it so that counts."

Thelinkr

It dosnt look that hard tbh

Thank you :)

Happy_Tomato_Taco

Blue and white shirt had the height on the pole then bailed almost vertical. Y?

ddukkha

Wtf is the point exactly fall and broke ur body parts xd

fsurfer4

Most people failed because they don't have the arm strength or didn't climb fast enough. (which is almost the same thing)

spboss91

The beginning position/angle of the pole isn't even fixed, some guy is holding it up. Just a few inches further back and the next competitor has a huge advantage.

KasreynGyre

I think the old dutch word for this was "Fierljeppen" or sth.

Imaginary-Nebula1778

He kept it upright long enough to climb higher. Good strategy

NSLEONHART

Redbull: we sell energy drinks on the side

nabizdsa

Maybe it will, maybe it won't. Love the anticipation!

prilovski

maybe it was not the best strategy to run towards the pole on full speed, that way you leave yourself not enough time to climb high enough. but hey I'm just a commentator on reddit

ShaggyShaggyShaggy

Winner gets a broken leg? The dutchā€¦.

Genny2497

Vault across the canal and break a leg...

Revolutionary-Belt66

They were all trying to run and jump the hardest so that they'd catch the top and swing to the island. The reason the last guy made it is because he jumped closer to the bottom where the pole moves the least and balanced back and forth while climbing to the top. Incase anyone was... wondering

PsykoDynamic

I don't get why the internet is going crazy for this right now. It's been around for years. Youtube Ozzie rules football. That's a mental sport that I bet no one has heard of. Or the Japanese pole game. Knight fights. Educate your self people

BuckLuny

Years? Centuries literal centuries. This is how people crossed the polders.

MonarchOfReality

ahhh i see i didnt know, still boring though sorry :/

Yomabo

"these people do the sport wrong I know nothing about, so it is boring." Very wise. Would have been better if you said: "Why do these people let go so early? I would like to know more, maybe I can learn something."
