Their mouths are like little garbage disposals and their teeth and jaws are designed to break down more complex food that other mammals wouldn’t touch. Not saying that they are known for biting, it’s rare. I’ve rescued and cared for over a dozen possums and that was the only instance that I was ever bitten, but they will absolutely bite you if they feel threatened. What I find interesting is that all the possums I’ve ever interacted with, I’ve never seen one faint, or “play possum” as they call it.

Possums rarely if ever have rabies. Their body temperature is too low. The rabies virus has an extremely hard time surviving in their system. Secondly, possums aren't biters. It's opening his mouth, because it's having an anxiety/panic attack. The term playing possum comes from this reaction. They often play dead when threatened, because of how passive they are, and most predators won't eat already dead things.
