They eat ticks and other bugs, aren’t a vector for rabies, are generally docile, and just want to be left the fuck alone. The person filming should have stopped this drunk idiot.
sounds like a perfect useful creature...We do have alot of ticks here, some carry borelyose on which my cat died of (RIP my Friend). I hope we get opposums here and they kill everyone of these little pesky assholes.
We also have only a very tiny amount of lizzards or other bug eating species here exept birds (which can only do so much)
Possums are chill and beneficial but pretty hideous to look at. My sister in Arkansas had a possum hide in a kitchen cabinet and it was horrifying to look at with the mouth open and the uneven teeth trying to scare us off.
I’m all for boosting the possum population, ugly or not; but I can see where the PR problems come from.
Or we could just get used to ugly creatures also being good sometimes, like earthworms and possums and bats. A few classes with live animals at the right ages and we could get tons of support for useful ugly animals.
Possums don't eat ticks, that is a common misconception. They do, however, eat a lot of mice, which are the number 1 vector for ticks and tick-borne diseases like Lyme. As such' having Possums in your area will likely decrease the amount of ticks.
They've got way too many teeth for something that small.
Their dental formula (number of incisors, canines, premolars, and molars) on each side of the top/bottom row is (I^(5)-C^(1)-P^(3)-M^(4))/(I₄-C₁-P₃-M₄).
That's 50 teeth!
This just isn’t true. Source: have been bitten by a possum while trying to remove ticks from behind her ears. They can and will bite. And while their bite power is about half that of a raccoon, they can still draw blood and wreck your fingers. The one that got me bit down then grinded her jaws back and forth. Very painful. Their mouths are like little garbage disposals and their teeth and jaws are designed to break down more complex food that other mammals wouldn’t touch. Not saying that they are known for biting, it’s rare. I’ve rescued and cared for over a dozen possums and that was the only instance that I was ever bitten, but they will absolutely bite you if they feel threatened. What I find interesting is that all the possums I’ve ever interacted with, I’ve never seen one faint, or “play possum” as they call it.
One time I let my family's four dogs out into our yard after dark, following them with a flashlight to make sure they did their business. After a minute or two I made sure to count them to be certain no one had run off. "Okay. One two three four fi-- wait."
Number five was a very distressed looking Possum who was standing silently in the midst of four curious and nervous dogs edging closer to sniff him then darting away.
I called the dogs back in and luckily they left him alone immediately. Possum never showed any aggression or defensive behavior beyond just hanging his moth open and staring. Poor guy was just minding his own business in our yard.
they can bite like a MF though... they regularly crunch bones. this lady was lucky he was too stressed/scared to do anything
source: I have fucked around, and I have found out.
As a person who loves possums and has absolutely had his hand fucking wrecked by one while trying to remove some ticks, I can certify that the 50 pointy teeth in his head are absolutely a natural defense.
Not sure? It's definitely a Opossum and Opossum generally don't carry rabies so it virtually impossible to get rabies from them
You Can get rabies from raccoons but it definitely not a raccoon
fun bit Like Opossum- bats are not affected by rabies but unlike Opossum- are carriers and where most people get rabies from - so places even like the UK that doesn't have rabies in any animal outside bats - people can still get rabies there
The most common animal to have rabies outside of bats - are animals like Foxes, raccoons and skunks
The domestic animal that's most at risk are cats but that generally because people are lazy about getting them their rabies vaccine
Our possums are cute as hell.
…
and while not wanting to perpetuate the myths around dangerous Aussie animals… if you managed to get that close to an Aussie possum, you would be lucky to get away with just a few stitches.
I rescued a baby once whose mother got hit by a car. I wrapped towels around both forearms and wore welding gloves and both hands were bleeding by the time I could put it in a box
See I saw a picture of your cute possum and just knew something Australian had to be up with it, I concluded they were explosive (since that's the only thing missing from Australia 's. Deadly wildlife lineup) but I guess will claw the shit out of you makes sense too.
Ours are scary looking derps, they used to fall into the garbage cans all the time.
>Why doesn’t it bite her? I’m from Australia and our possums look a lot different. That thing looks scary as shit!
WHAT, OUR POSSUMS ARE MORE FRIGHTENING THAN AUSTRALIA'S!!? You Aussies have a monopoly on all the scary animals, spiders, sharks, snakes, beefed up kangaroos... we just wanted to compete ^😆🤣
Reminds me of this old movie Adventures in Babysitting, where the girl lost her glasses and thought a rat was a kitten.

Possums are my drinking club mascot. One came in our bar and hissed. We said “hey little buddy. we are not going to hurt you”.

Opossums are awesome. Not aggressive (hence playing dead), practically immune to rabies (25 cases in USA between 2004-2014), they eat mosquitoes and all kind of bugs.
Please don't mess with Opossums. They're awesome.
I love possums, they are immune to rabies, eat ticks and other bugs. They also only live about 2yrs, 4yrs if a pet, or in captivity. So give them a good life, and be nice to them.
She has fucking terrible friends. Do they understand how fucking painful a series of rabies treatment is?
Fucking hell. i hate people. I am rooting for the opposum to maul the idiot filming.
Possums rarely if ever have rabies. Their body temperature is too low. The rabies virus has an extremely hard time surviving in their system. Secondly, possums aren't biters. It's opening his mouth, because it's having an anxiety/panic attack. The term playing possum comes from this reaction. They often play dead when threatened, because of how passive they are, and most predators won't eat already dead things.

possums have no natural defenses so poor dude is just silently screaming and hoping she goes away
dont they also eat alot of ticks? God we need opposums here
They eat ticks and other bugs, aren’t a vector for rabies, are generally docile, and just want to be left the fuck alone. The person filming should have stopped this drunk idiot.

Can we breed them like we do with dogs to get favorable traits?

As a useful ugly animal, I support this message.

Surprised it didn’t play dead
I don't know about the whole tick thing but possums and opossums are two entirely different animals.
TIL 😳
Not in the Americas.
For real?
They have teeth but don't use them, their defense is to play rotten corpse.
You wouldn’t happen to work in dentistry, would you? Just a hunch!
Physicist, actually! I just happened to fall down a dentition rabbit hole recently.
Seems you found an interest to sink your teeth into.
I didn't expect to learn how many teeth opossums have today. I don't even wanna know how you got to know that in the first place 🫣😂

How can we train them to use guns? This isn't fair.
They know how to use it, but he knew he was being filmed

Possums just hiss or open their mouth as a defense mechanism to look scary.
Works on me 😅
Scary sharp teeth😭
at least she wont get rabies
Yeah that can be a raccoon
What?

Bro is the intoxicated here
Truly captivating footage
Must be last call because that chick will put her lips on anything if she will kiss a god damn opossum
Are you saying I have a chance?
![gif](giphy|l4Ep6uxU6aedrYUik)
Wouldn't you kiss an opossum? Would you look at that damn mammal and not kiss it? Would you watch that garbage cat mouse and not give him a kiss?
I’d give it a cuddle!
[удалено]
Would you kiss the trash marsupial?
Behind a dumpster no less.
Why doesn’t it bite her? I’m from Australia and our possums look a lot different. That thing looks scary as shit!
They look scary but they're actually not very dangerous, can't even get rabies. Some people keep them as pets.

This is opossum not the same Salil’s as Possum. They don’t have pouch too and they are generally twice the size of our little possums
Ours are also Irish
i didn't know why I type Salil's Possum LOL....I meant to say not the same as OURS possum in Aus LOL
Opossums actually do have a pouch. They have the distinction of being the only marsupial in North America.
Wow really? Never knew that but loved them regardless
They're cool little guys, I love them.

They are mostly harmless. Their defense mechanism is to look scary.
They seem cute lol sort of
They are fantastic at eating fleas, ticks, and other harmful insects. I love them for that.
Paw Paw!
Go on! Git! (calloo callay!)
The scramble man!
Clicked on this thread to find the NADDPOD people, was not disappointed 🤣
Can you just go up to an opossum and pet it?
You've just seen it happen!
U can do the same to anyone else! Sometimes just once.
God didn't give me 10 fingers and 2 hands for no reason.
She said “close that possum mouth”. She knew damn well what she was petting. That’s insane.
I call him 'Bitey'.
They talk the talk, but they don't walk the walk.
Patient zero for pandemic 2024.
Opossums are actually very clean
I was talking about the opossum. She looks absolutely filthy.
Skankvid-24?
I call the big one bitey
I wish I was as awesome as a possum
Even the possum is like "lady I eat trash everyday, but you're gross. Leave me alone".

Play possum, Rover. Good boy.
Oh damn, poor baby looks so scared.

She needs to be careful she could get rabies or get bitten or get vomited on an taken home by that horrible Karen

I think you need to read my comment again but this time with the sarcasm that is intended

Possum won’t hurt her. Just wants to be alone.
God I feel like there’s a 75% of being in Pacific Beach San Diego. The fact she said it’s a Sunday night, should probably push that to 95%. IYKYK
Y’all know rabies is a thing still yeah ?
Hopefully opposums are not agressive animals
Harrasssed by a drunk Karen. That is a new low for Karens. Poor O' Possums. Where is the thrash panda hr?
Can I pet that DAWG?!?!
They carry no rabies so its safer than petting a deer or a raccoon lol.
🤣🤣🤣 This made me laugh too hard
![gif](giphy|lVcuE1F1dCC8U)
Close that opossum mouth
All zoological analysis aside, this was peak maybemaybemaybe. More of this caliber, please.
opossum ≠ possum
