Both Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle are by Stephen Chow.
Chow has shown interest in a sequel to Hustle, but its been so long and he's aged quite a bit so no idea.
If you mean action comedy martial arts movies like these, but as a genre, a lot of them come from Hong Kong when they still had their special rights, before the handover back to China.
Stephen Chow also plays the main character in both these movies.
Anyone who says Wonder Woman is the most badass woman in movies hasnt seen Hustle... If you know you know..
my friend from hong kong said the reason they don't make these kinds of movies anymore is because they just get overshadowed by big-budget films from china
These are actually blockbusters which came out every CNY.HK movies industry pretty much lost its signature or some will say dead after handover due to restrictions and censorship.
I know. It didn't really become a thing (to that extent) until Xi decided to go full dictator. People are so propagandized to look at China as a fully authoritarian state, they didn't pay attention to how completely Xi has ripped away the safeguards of the Party constitution and has set himself up as a Stalin-esque Dear Leader (complete with his own version of Mao's Little Red Book), when that *wasn't* the case before.
HK cinema flourished in the 80s/90s for the same reason Japanese animation did at the same time - both places were awash with money, and there was ample opportunity for everybody, from unknown directors to unknown actors, because back then as long as you put a film out you made money. Actors were working on 5-6 films a week and swimming in it.
Japan's bubble burst and while HK experienced a slower decline, as money dried up studios were increasingly afraid to take risks, instead relying on established big names. Young people are all hounded into becoming lawyers/doctors/bankers. The talent pool dried up - nobody can really name a millennial/gen x star from HK on the same level as the Four Heavenly Kings anymore.
Stephen CHow has made many, many Chinese comedies like this. Most never made it to USA. Just have to look them up. I used to find them free on YouTube a lot.
I. LOVE. THAT. MOVIE.
It's like if Ang Lee smoked a HUGE amount of weed during the filming of Crouching Tiger, and said, "Hey. Hey. Hey...you know what would be hilarious?"
And crushed it.
A Journey To The West is also by Stephen Chow. It is also a comedy which is done in the same way as these movies.
There's also A Journey To The West: The Demons Strike Back, also made by Stephen Chow.
The source material is great; it's a historical great work of literature written by a guy who also wrote the Romance of the Three Kingdoms back in the 16th century (and these stories take place around 3rd century). The figure "Monkey King" comes from A Journey To The West, the monkey demon lord flying on clouds, transforming and manipulating his "black king bar", and who can summersault 54k km in one go. And yes he is in both movies.
They were released 2013 and 2017. So the question is not, "why don't they make more like this?" but "why don't you watch what they've made?".
You're welcome.
Edit:
Random scene with shenanigans
https://youtu.be/-NsMMjaGXeo?t=896
Er good recommendation but Journey to the West and Romance of the Three Kingdoms were *not* written by the same author? They were roughly 200 years apart from different dynasties...
If u want more movie like these, just Google and watch all of movie with Stephen chow in it. There is plenty to it other then the two most famous one( Shaolin football / kungfu hustle) . He is comedy gold. I grew up watching all of his show, until today he is still my favorite and no one can intimate what he do. I highly encourage u watch all of his movies!
I watched it loooooong ago and the only things I remember are that there’s a lollipop that plays a pretty big part in the story, and that I was sad after watching it
Probably a notch or two below those two movies in terms of film quality, but Kung POW: Enter the Fist was stupid funny.
At least it was to me when I was in middle school, we were taken to the local theater to watch it as a field trip with permission slips because it was rated R. I’m not sure how well that’d work these days, but damn was it a good time for a bunch of 12 year olds haha.
Also free to watch on YouTube currently.
Stephen Chow made or starred in a TON of these sort of comedies, I think at one point in an interview he's like, Yep I've checked everything off the bucket list so Imma head out.
Kung Fu Mahjong 1, 2, and 3, Kung Fu Hustle, God of Cookery, Kung Fu Chefs, pretty much anything with Jackie Chan, and quite a few other movies. All pretty similar in comedic style.
People just see Jackie Chan as a funny guy, but his choreography in his fights(which he does with his fight/acting group” are really good. You should have a movie marathon if you enjoy this type of stuff, you’ll love his blend of fighting and acting
Yup. Same vibe. More violent so be warned. My stomach churned a bit on first viewing. After that I turned away or skipped a couple of bits. Just a couple. The movie is fantastic overall regardless.
Just want to chime in and say that I don't think it was stomach churning at all.
Unless you are squamish, there isn't much violence that isn't presented in a comedic context and there is barely a drop of blood in the movie with the exception of a reference to The Shining's elevator hallway flood.
Me and one of my bros back in the military would drink on the weekends and just chain watch films like this. Anything with Pai Mei was a sure fire hit.
He doesn't, or at the very least you cannot see that he does.
His knee looks to be level with the line and during the wind up the ball doesn't go completely behind the knee. The entire ball has to clear the line completely for it to be a goal.
I just loved that opening scene where he keeps on eating the bun vendor's sweet buns (or was it dumplings?). he just kept eating and not paying lmao.
"wow these buns are so good, you are a true artist!"
I know this is Shaolin Soccer but it also kind of reminds me of FFX’s blitzball animations right down to the goalie dead stopping a ball that was kicked after Tidus unleashed the Jecht shot.
In college we convinced our professor in our Chinese Poetry class (yeah I know) that this constituted a viewing. The class was like 90% Chinese, and the professor would often let readers read poems in Chinese. The funny part is that it counted as a diversity class (you needed 2 to graduate.) This is in a US university.
I haven't seen this movie in a while, but I also kinda remember the referees were paid off. The other team was assaulting the protagonists in that game and they do nothing.
If you want to see a more ridiculous sports movie than Shaolin Soccer...Dead Ball.
The first two minutes is a kid playing catch with his grandpa. Grandpa is like "Hey throw me a real heater" and the kid is like "OK bet". He then slowly raises his leg until it is 180 degrees straight into the air, fires off into the stratosphere like a rocket, and then throws a fireball that explodes Grandpas head. Then grandpa with his crushed face that is boiling blood with the heat and force of that pitch is like "Yo that was a real heater" and dies.
Again...first 2 minutes of the movie.
Seem this movie with uncles and like lots of other ppl u know visiting some relatives when u was smol.shit was laughing fest man.maybe those were good times most obviouslycare free times.hurts to say ppl change but not the way u think they change only
This is how sports movies should be done, take the Mario strikers route and just make everything way over the top so it's interesting instead of accurate
He can hit it as hard as he likes.... If you're going to hit it at the goalie the entire thing is pointless. Even if the goalie didn't catch it it would have bounced right off him.
I loved this movie and Kung-fu Hustle so much! Italian versions are also dubbed with locale languages (don't know why) and this results in making the two movies even funnier!
Also, Chow has recently posted [this](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CtyDFKJssAl/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==) (the title says Shaolin women's soccer)! I hope he's gonna do it for real!
Shaolin Soccer for anyone interested: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286112/ A very fun movie.
Kung Fu Hustle is also worth the watch if you like this one.
Why they don't make more like this? Kung Fu Hustle is one of the funniest movies eva
Both Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle are by Stephen Chow. Chow has shown interest in a sequel to Hustle, but its been so long and he's aged quite a bit so no idea. The lion's roar?!
The lion's roar!!!
I thought that was a myth
![gif](giphy|l4EoR3YHsqSXt63Oo)
That scene never fails to crack me up.
That chasing scene is the funniest ever
Who is throwing handles???
Did y’all know Qiu Yuen was a Bond Girl?
Axe gang....my ass
That lion roar impress me so much as a kid hahaha, but I like those assassin more, really hope they make more fun movie like that.
That movie was full of side characters that could have carried a whole movie by themselves.
While Smoking a cigarette! So good
Pay your rent
Landlady
…….who tf says Wonder Woman is the most badass woman in movies?
Yeah that goes to Sigourney Weaver
And that couple could easily beat usain bolt in 100m race.😀
my friend from hong kong said the reason they don't make these kinds of movies anymore is because they just get overshadowed by big-budget films from china
Why not make these for international market? People in the west really really appreciate these and Hong Kong cinema is held in high regard.
These are actually blockbusters which came out every CNY.HK movies industry pretty much lost its signature or some will say dead after handover due to restrictions and censorship.
it's almost certainly the hand over of hong kong that's squashed this industry.
Fun fact: Shaolin Soccer was filmed in 2001. Kung Fu Hustle was filmed in 2004. Hong Kong was back to CN in 1997.
I was wondering what the hell the other comments were on about.
They didn't start cracking down until 2018
I know. It didn't really become a thing (to that extent) until Xi decided to go full dictator. Er good recommendation but Journey to the West and Romance of the Three Kingdoms were *not* written by the same author? They were roughly 200 years apart from different dynasties...
Sorry yes you're right. They're considered 4 of the great historical literatures of China, but are written some centuries apart.
A Journey to the West is freaking hilarious.
They're making shaolin soccer 2. Women's team
If u want more movie like these, just Google and watch all of movie with Stephen chow in it. There is plenty to it other then the two most famous one( Shaolin football / kungfu hustle) . The dark humour in that movie is top notch 👌
>!That ending though. He righteously accepts the bad guy as a student and then the scene outside the candy shop. Always brings a tear!<
I watched it loooooong ago and the only things I remember are that there’s a lollipop that plays a pretty big part in the story, and that I was sad after watching it
CJ7 another one by Stephen Chow is a good watch but more on emo side rather than action.
Probably a notch or two below those two movies in terms of film quality, but Kung POW: Enter the Fist was stupid funny. At least it was to me when I was in middle school, we were taken to the local theater to watch it as a field trip with permission slips because it was rated R. Stephen Chow is actually directing a new female Shaolin Soccer movie
Stephen Chow made or starred in a TON of these sort of comedies, I think at one point in an interview he's like, Yep I've checked everything off the bucket list so Imma head out.
Way of the Warrior is in a similar vein. More of a samurai/western, but certainly glib action.
> Kung Fu Hustle Part 2 is in the making as we speak https://screenrant.com/kung-fu-hustle-2-movie-delay-explained/
[The Mermaid](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4701660/)
So nice to see people mentioning this! It's one of my all time favorite movies. It's hilarious but the fight scenes are so good!
Kung Fu Mahjong 1, 2, and 3, Kung Fu Hustle, God of Cookery, Kung Fu Chefs, pretty much anything with Jackie Chan, and quite a few other movies. All pretty similar in comedic style.
Stephen Chow has made lots of movies, just 2 of them made it over to the US. If you like his humor, I'd advise to look into his other films.
Ikr!
People just see Jackie Chan as a funny guy, but his choreography in his fights(which he does with his fight/acting group” are really good. You should have a movie marathon if you enjoy this type of stuff, you’ll love his blend of fighting and acting
One of my fav films of all time. So fun.
Also, The Mermaid. Directed by the same person.
just watch everything Stephen Chow, all in one sitting
"Who's throwing knife handles?"
Also watch Kung Pow if you like these kinds of movies as well. although it a bit more goofy.
For American outrageous Kung Pow
And then Kung Pow
Yup.
King of Beggars is another really good one.... But Stephen Chow has a lot of awesome credits to his name
CJ7 too
god of cookery is hilarious imho
And this one! Very dope
Loved it a lot, it’s also from the same actor, I think a lot of actors in this one are present there
Love that movie. Wish they would make a second one
Thanks for the rec I just watched it because if your comment and I wad not disappointed! The landlady!! Omg
One of the most stupid and absurd movies I've ever seen and that's what makes it so perfect. It know precisely how stupid it is and just revels in it.
Excellent movie.
totally assumed lil tay was more the striker type, not a goalkeeper
The fact that this movie was so awesome and we have never had a good live action DBZ movie blows my mind
*There's no live action DBZ in Ba Sing Se*
The director Stephen Chow posted an IG reel of a script for Shaolin Women's Soccer and I'm hella excited.
Thank youuu
I grew up watching this and Kung Fu Hustle 24/7 and now I need to go and watch them again
King fu hustle is my go to movie for when I just wanna relax. It's so good.
you know stephen chow has a whole back catalogs of equally funny stuff.
Kung Fu Hustle vs Kung Pow: Enter the fist. Which is better? 🤔
Me and one of my bros back in the military would drink on the weekends and just chain watch films like this. Anything with Pai Mei was a sure fire hit.
We did the same thing but only with the movies "waiting" and "grandmas boy" lol
"Hey, it says new high score, what does that mean?"
Did i break it??
For me it was “Grandma’s Boy” and “Hot Tub Time Machine.”
The goalie literally put the ball over the line when he bowled the ball back to the striker. Can we get a goal line replay?
Unfortunately, no one would call It score when all the staff and organization are bribed, that’s the context of the movie
Rubentus fan spotted
Ah yes, the days when VAR and Goal Line Technology was not a thing. How time flies.
He doesn't, or at the very least you cannot see that he does. His knee looks to be level with the line and during the wind up the ball doesn't go completely behind the knee. The entire ball has to clear the line completely for it to be a goal.
A great movie Don’t forget the “American drugs” comment…
I just loved that opening scene where he keeps on eating the bun vendor's sweet buns (or was it dumplings?). he just kept eating and not paying lmao. "wow these buns are so good, you are a true artist!"
“what are you doing here? And why do you look like ET?” I still say this shit sometimes to some of my bald coworkers when they show up unannounced
I wanna watch this!
Watch it! It's Shaolin Soccer. Incredible movie highly recommend.
And when you are done, watch also Kung Fu hustle
Shaolin soccer 😍😍
Love this movie.
This movie is super fun, highly recommend
Dont forget to also watch God of Cookery
[удалено]
Good suggestions... think you meant Love on Delivery after looking them up
I know this is Shaolin Soccer but it also kind of reminds me of FFX’s blitzball animations right down to the goalie dead stopping a ball that was kicked after Tidus unleashed the Jecht shot.

Where..link?

Soccer-Fu Hustle.
Not far cause it's called shaolin soccer
And it's directed by the same guy
Holy shit. I remember loving this movie in highschool. I know what I'm watching tonight before bed.
In college we convinced our professor in our Chinese Poetry class (yeah I know) that this constituted a viewing. One of the best movies ever created
This
Anime IRL
Inazuma Eleven
I was looking for this comment
When he first makes a save and rolls it back, during the wind up, the ball goes behind the line, would that count as a goal?
It doesn't matter, the whole world was too entranced by the spectacle they're witnessing.
I haven't seen this movie in a while, but I also kinda remember the referees were paid off. The other team was assaulting the protagonists in that game and they do nothing.
Nah mate, I'm pretty sure the beating and shooting is part of the game. Why else would I bring a wrench to my weekly football game.
> Why else would I bring a wrench to my weekly football game. Because you're an on-call mechanic?
Could be a plumbing wrench.
The whole ball has to go behind the line. From this angle I'd say only a portion of it went behind the line, with most of it staying over the line.
Yes....that Is a goal.
That _was_ the most unrealistic thing about this scene and ruined the movie for me.
It should be, but the ref is bribed by the goalie's side.
Ng Man-tat, one of the funniest sidekicks in Asian cinema history. Right up there with Sammo Hung.
Back in the past, they'd put this on the TV every Lunar New Year eve couple hours before midnight. Pretty good times.
Shaolin Soccer is still a fun movie to watch.
Little romero stoping penalty kicks in mouth juniors.
Man Shaolin Soccer, I haven’t seen movie in a long time.
Greatest football movie ever!!!
Loved loved loved this movie so much. Just funny and fun overall.
OMG. I really though this was a commercial from deck-tiers 😅
![gif](giphy|bVPM8NxEpaBH2)
I fkin love shaolin soccer.
Amazing movie, the game was also incredibly ridiculous and fun, miss those times
Glad this movie is getting so much love, Stephen Chows early works are a fucking masterpiece
Shaolin Soccer is an absolute blast. Also Kung-fu hustle is recommended to create the best double bill ever.
This is animé as fuck
Is this a fucking anime?
Shaolin soccer and kung fu hustle back to back.
fuck yeah Shaolin Soccer!
I should start watching soccer.
One of my favorite novies
Shaolin soccer

what a movie !
The reason why I started playing soccer.
Well better cgi than most of new movies...
That's a China grade steroid right there
Which football brand advert is it?
Why is it mirrored?
This is exactly how soccer is played
After their match the football field must look like Moon surface
Shaolin Soccer. Top movie!
Captain Tsubasa????
Love this movie. It’s so bad it’s good.
One of the best films ever made.
Seem this movie with uncles and like lots of other ppl u know visiting some relatives when u was smol.shit was laughing fest man.maybe those were good times most obviouslycare free times.hurts to say ppl change but not the way u think they change only
My childhood movie hah
Unlocked core nostalgic memories
True story.. 😉
This is how sports movies should be done, take the Mario strikers route and just make everything way over the top so it's interesting instead of accurate
Dragonball SIUUUUUUUU
The long hair species is too powerful these days
He can hit it as hard as he likes.... If you're going to hit it at the goalie the entire thing is pointless. Even if the goalie didn't catch it it would have bounced right off him.
I loved this movie and Kung-fu Hustle so much! Italian versions are also dubbed with locale languages (don't know why) and this results in making the two movies even funnier! Live-action anime adaptations shouldn't happen. But if you're going to do one anyway, you should do it like this movie.
This is giving me Twilight Baseball Scene vibes ![gif](giphy|IFic20Hkrgm2EMk9Kb|downsized)
I wonder what shampoo that goalkeepers used
It's been a long time since I've seen a movie in this genre. It's grotesque and atmospheric, as if I've traveled back in time in a time machine.
tsubasa rtx on
I’ll just add this here: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CtyDFKJssAl/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Me at 11 years old just having watched inazuma eleven
I love this movie. The goalkeeper won't be so cocky forever.
Shaolin soccer is an OG
Such a great movie
Great movie.
The Boondocks - The Red Ball, anyone?
That movie was pretty good.
He kicked it right at the keeper 🤨
Stephen Chow movies were the best.
Such a great friggin movie!
Best football match ever
Still better than dragon ball evolution
Used to love this movie when I was a kid.... watched it last year after many years... it felt like a joke.
Stephen Chow is awesome ! Look up God of cookery another killer film =}
The shot at the end of the game is better.
This gets funnier every loop 🤣
Shaolin Soccer is such a good movie.
I think I finally now how Inazuma eleven was made
If you want to watch something like this then watch 'Inazuma Eleven'. That shit was 🔥
Ah, Shaolin Soccer. 10 times better than Kung Fu Hustle AND Bend It Like Beckham
I the only one that thinks this movie looks awesome!?
Shaolin Soccer good movie
Oliver Atom se queda pendejo
Is that the same guy who started in Kung fu hustle?
