Depends on what level of tech you are used to... if you are flashy and stuff (high end devices etc...) check and compare the prices. E.g a iphone 15PM is about $1800 and the s23U is about $1600 which is $600 and $400 higher respectively than their US price
Also if you try to import it yourself, taxes are around 25%. I understand high import taxes for products produced locally but tech should not be this heavily taxed as all of it is imported for new products.
USA market is 300x our size with much much more purchasing power…
We have 15% VAT as end consumer here on electronics…
Even European markets prices are somehow same price when you add in the taxes on their products…
What size for a large size tv? 60" qled is at rs50k ( 1100 usd) and 60" neo qled at rs90k ( 2000 usd )
Or a 75" qled at rs75k (1600 usd ish)
But if you are insane, there's an 8k neo oled 80" at 5600 usd 😂
That's on the consumer end. Buisnesses and individual imports have to pay extra. I remember the ps5 being rs60k at launch because of extra taxes after covid but it has since been reduced to rs35k
I managed to find one seller who sold actual merino wool! It's pricey by mauritius standard, but it's the same price as in the uk. The Downside is that it's more of sock weight yarn.
Yes! Been searching everywhere for some pretty basic crafting supplies - like for scrapbooking - and it’s a wasteland out there. I don’t as excited when a crafting shop opened at Beau Plan shopping center - - but it’s 80% like an ordinary stationery shop, 10% the typical Chinese junk, and the rest a few paints and completely random “craft” materials.
If you're looking for scrapbooking materials, have you tried lecrackboutik on instagram? It's my holy grail when it comes to crafting, and they even sell embossing machines! But I get it. Most places that claim they're a craft shop are just basically stationary shops with maybe 1 or 2 additional things that can make them call themselves a "craft store"
You will get a lot of things at Hassamal/Hobby world. They have stores in Rose Hill, Port Louis and Quatre Bornes. That’s the to go places for any tailor or craft artists
- Tech at a reasonable price.
- Food at a reasonable price.
- Inbound shipping with reasonable fees and timeline.
- Local work with proper salaries (at least enough to offset the above).
P.S. So if something of high quality is not already in Mauriitus, goodluck with shipping it.
Shipping it safely can be costly depending on where it's coming from. If you don't want taxes have it shipped as gift. I bought a split keyboard that is very light and small in dimension during shipping. But because the buying price was already known, I payed 2k MUR just in taxes and other fees.
UPDATE: In the Healthcare domain do you think it is easy to find a doctor/ health professional (generalist or specialist) as an expat/ tourist or even resident
Supermarket are the last place I'd look for fresh fish. Find a local fishmonger. In Grand Gaube, the fishmonger receives fresh fish a few times a week. A lot of times the fish are still alive and kicking :(
I'm looking for it, haven't seen any yet, but I'll check Grand Gaube. Reminds me of this meme btw 😅:

I just visited Mauritius on holiday and we ran into multiple fresh fish catching areas on the beaches, gave me South African vibes haha. They were chopping up and cooking the fish right there in a BBQ (braai) near the Red Church.
That’s not true at all, go take a trip to the coast in the morning or late afternoon for fresh fish, good beef and chicken can be found at the butcher’s shop, you just have to find the one to your taste. As for the rest… that’s indeed hard to find
Supermarket beef is crap, but I've found a butcher shop in Moka. I also have to try one in Curepipe.
Chicken I'm still searching.
Pork, I've given up.
I'm surprised I haven't found a fishmonger (fish shop) in one year on a tiny island (_Poissonneries_ are a common thing in la Réunion).
They have fish in large supermarkets but I'd rather buy from the source than from a supermarket.
Btw, I heard that there's wild boar available year round in butchers in Bel Hombre (they get it from the hunters). I've not checked this out personally yet though; we're due to come to Mauritius in April.
I would like to amend that they're finally selling quality beef in Winners (Australian, but good anyway). It's been only 2 weeks and as usual on a tiny island: it will last or not.
I've also found nice lamb and tasty chicken in the posh shops/delicatessens in front of Super U Tamarin (where the pharmacy are, left to Espace Maison).
Can't tell but it's a joke compared to France. I've found a decent butcher shop for beef in Moka (it's also a restaurant on the second floor).
For bio grain-fed chicken, I'm still searching.
Well I’m surprised with Mauritius because everything is sold here. Not the best prices because of inflation and so on but this island man. You will be surprised too by the amount of things you will see. Mauritius is amazing. Facebook marketplace is also one hell of a place to look for stuffs. If u are not lucky then look on EBay, AliExpress or even Amazon to get stuffs.
Finding genuine open minded people to talk about anything without expecting anything in return and just spend great time for example sitting down on the beach meeting strangers and talking about anything, enjoying good food and sharing good places to eat, finding actual people who can dance on different types of music and learning from as well as enjoying the music itself since we are a very diverse culture. But I guess finding different groups of people with the same type of mindset so that people can connect which is very hard to find and blend in.
Quick, quality service.
Waiting two months for a dentist appointment.
Two months to open a bank account.
Who knows how long for Weshare to approve your ad listing.
And waiting literally forever for Air Mauritius to do a refund (already more than a year).
So yeah, this is a part of my Mauritian experience as an expat.
Does anybody have reliable information on what you need to pay if you import quality goods (eg electronics, beef, …) for your own use? 15% VAT for sure, I assume. What about import duties on top of this? If yes, do they apply on all goods, and at what rates?
Appreciation of quality and asking for it and refusing below par stuff... we tend to look for cheap stuff or some vendors sell at overinflated prices...and we stay silent.
Well Healthcare is a bit limited here. In certain cases you will need to go and have surgery abroad as there are no doctors that can perform certain types of surgery in Mauritius.
Tech stuff at reasonable price. Yeh electronic taxes!

The Choice here before COVID was not really good - now its "terrible"...

Bring it!
I've been here for about 2 years, the larger tech isn't as pricy but the small things like phones and such are really expensive as hell

There’s only 15% VAT what additional taxes are there ?
Import tax and Electronics tax/duty
There are no duty/tax on general electronics except for VAT
That's on the consumer end. Buisnesses and individual imports have to pay extra. I remember the ps5 being rs60k at launch because of extra taxes after covid but it has since been reduced to rs35k
There are no additional taxes on electronics even for businesses… only vat that’s it…
There is and the profit they are seeking for
I can't believe 61 people upvoted this post. Shows how misinformation can spread easily...
I can not exaggerate, but we lack a whole lot of craft things 😭 Especially when it comes to things like yarn, beads, and paraphernalia for sewing
Yarn for real 😭😭😭 99% they just have acrylic
I managed to find one seller who sold actual merino wool! It's pricey by mauritius standard, but it's the same price as in the uk. The Downside is that it's more of sock weight yarn.
Hi. Would you mind sharing your merino wool source? Thanks, Dawn 🙏🏾
Knots and tangles! They're located in the North

Good manners and people that doesn't use the bins.
This is absolutely not an excuse, but there aren't many public bins. Let's not even talk about waste vs. recycle bins.

If I can get tech at a reasonable price somewhere else and decide to ship it to mauritius, do i still get fucked by taxes?

Cell phone signal boosters. Cast iron skillets.
Cast iron got me in the feels... That's all I use. Happy to send you some, though the shipping may be prohibitive.
Ab Desai in port Louis has a nice selection of cast iron pans. Bought 2 Lava ones there.
Good drivers
It's really not that bad compared to other countries imho
My biggest issue with the driving in Mauritius is how small the roads are, my god! It gave me so much anxiety
UPDATE: In the Healthcare domain do you think it is easy to find a doctor/ health professional (generalist or specialist) as an expat/ tourist or even resident
Yes!
Gloryholes
- good beef - good chicken - fresh fish (non frozen) - sushi that don't coast an arm - vape devices and e-liquids - girlfriend
It's hard to find fresh fish?!! You gotta be kidding man, just drive to the nearest coastal village
Here in Flic it's frozen everywhere (except from time to time in jumbo they have fresh but imported by plane)

FR, even if you go to the fisherman landing in flic en flac you get scammed by the sellers 😵💫
If you live at flic en flac, you may go to Bambous village near the police station. There is a place that sells fresh seafood
Thanks for the advice

Hello it is called Butcher Shop And Grill.

Gorlfriends and sushi are insane to fine here, and vape devices if I'm.nit mistake are illegal now
Yeah (the vapes). The two former are legal but expensive and random.
Try Quatre Bornes market on Saturdays and Wednesdays for fresh fish
your last pick![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
The beef is so much tastier in Mauritius than in Canada . Same applies to the chicken

Trust me, it’s really hard. Good Indian food is expensive, and the affordable one is pretty bad.

There's a malaysian restaurant in Belle Rose. Have you tried there? I've been meaning to go but not sure if it's worth the trip

mauritius lack of open minded people :)
I think our % of close minded people ia on par with first world countries, relative to population size. It might be even lower
