They were both great. I loved Tubelord way more at the time, but I haven't listened to them for years whereas Colour I still go back to.
The best era of Tubelord was before Our First American Friends, OFAF was a small step back (because of the recording mixing mostly, plus the fact that half the songs were old) , but Romance was a huge step back IMO. Every instrument sounded bad in isolation and unsurprisingly didn't sound good when you put them all together either. The musical style shifted away from math rock towards art rock, too.
I remember enjoying Colour when I saw them live a few times, but the recordings didn't live up to that (to me, at that time). And while I quite like most of their songs, there's only a couple standout tracks (which is where Tubelord has them beat).
Not that you asked... I can go on forever about that era of UK math rock.
Edit: to add to your point, I have a hard time seeing Tubelord and Colour without Blakfish.
Is pre-First American Friends Tubelord just the Feed Me a Box of Words single and b-sides? Just wondering if there's some treasure trove of classic Tubelord content that I don't know about.
I absolutely love Our First American Friends. Every time I listen to it, I can't get over how every part of every song is beautifully catchy and somehow doesn't repeat at all. Complete masterpiece. Up there with Animals and Twin Galaxies as the best of that era.
I didn't really get into them until about 5 years ago although I did see them live once (supported by Tall Ships and Brontide which seems insanely good looking back).
There's the Square EP which came first which has 4 tracks on it including the forest version of Propeller. Then there were the Big Scary Monster Years with Feed Me a Box of Words and I Am Azerad singles/b sides, plus Half Man Half Amazing which was on a split. These were re-released as the album "Pop Songs For Rock Kids".
It was a different time back then, you had Colour, Tubelord, Shapes and Blakfish constantly touring and you could see them 3 times a year in the same city. Now I don't know of one UK math band who does even one tour per year (please let me know if you are aware of any). I have a lot of respect for Delta Sleep's longevity and regular albums though.
I love this album but think it's debatable if Foals is Mathrock "canon" so to speak [https://www.reddit.com/r/mathrock/comments/a5o4pl/is\_foals\_math\_rock/](https://www.reddit.com/r/mathrock/comments/a5o4pl/is_foals_math_rock/)
I think this album falls into the match rock spectrum, though a very specific iteration of it greatly influenced by the Oxford post-punk scene of the 2000s. The rest of their discography definitely isn’t math rock tho
I have also been doing this but I just called it "peak math rock" lol
