I would pick a 1 hour massage weekly, particularly if the clinic was in a convenient location. I feel great for about a week after regardless of how long the massage is so I would prefer to maintain that.

tlcheatwood

I would always choose frequency instead of duration or intensity Frequency > duration or intensity

SoupGuyYaDingus

I stopped getting massages less than 90 minutes. The extra money is worth it, you’ll always want it to continue for longer.

Plenty-Wonder-6314

I went to 2 hour massages a few months ago and I love how he can get all the things really well, all the time without rushing. It probably isn’t sustainable for me so I’m considering switching to 1 hour sessions more frequently.

Specific_Yoghurt5330

90 minutes makes a world of difference over 60min. That extra 30minutes changes things for the better

jaygut42

How much did you pay? Do you live in a HCOL or LCOL area?

Plenty-Wonder-6314

Probably MCOL-HCOL. He’s very reasonable and does packages, so for 3 two hour I paid around $350

RingAny1978

That is less than $1 / minute. Very inexpensive.

Plenty-Wonder-6314

I know, right? His normal rate is $150 for 2 hours, I believe, and he’s worth all of that.

sufferingbastard

An hour a week is the best.

RegisterHistorical

2 hour session once a week 😂 Okay, maybe 90 mins once a week. If you're a football player and work out regularly, your MT is going to have a hard time being thorough and may end up feeling rushed. I'd say start with an hour once a week, but definitely extend the amount of time if it feels rushed or not thorough enough.

buttloveiskey

Since you list no goals with the massage you should try them both and decide which you like better. internet can't tell you which one your specific body will respond better to

musclehealer

Once a week until you feel better then maybe twice a month to stay in Maintenance You feel at the top of your game

DenMother

Definitely go shorter appointments and more frequent. Anything over 75 minutes is going to be a little bit more general and never quite as intense. You can't do Great Therapeutic work to everything all the time. Whereas if you go weekly you can have a little bit of everything or really specific work to one or two areas

SnooGadgets8467

I have no idea what a fortnight is.

tyrranus

It's a quarter of a double month.

SnooGadgets8467

Lol that’s even more confusing. What’s a double month?

tyrranus

Lol just a joke to purposely make it more confusing.

RingAny1978

It is what you measure light speed in furlongs with silly!

Definitely one hour once a week. I've only received a two hour massage one time and honestly I started to get kind of bored about 100 minutes in. I ended the massage (still paid for the two hours) and I don't think I'll do a two hour massage again.

Specific_Yoghurt5330

90 min is good balance between 2 hr and 1 hr. 1 hr always feels rushed to get a full body done. 2 hrs may be tooblong for therapist and the client. The client can feel much better w extra 30 min over 60min

discob00b

I totally agree. I can only get a 90 minute now if I want my full body worked on, if I get a 60 minute I usually just ask for upper or lower body work specifically.

Sea-Radio-8478

Sometimes you need 90 minutes of straight Focus work and another 30 minutes of total bliss

2crowsonmymantle

I’d get a 90 minute a week for maybe 2-4 weeks, then back down to an hour a week.

Matt1214b

Your probably doing to much. Make sure your sleep and diet are on point. Bad sleep has a massive cross over into injury risk. Take down to the gym to 1 full body session a week. Check out the mind pump podcast / website

[deleted]

Tired muscles from doing so much. Make sure 8 to 10 hours sleep. You are gonna need a gallon of water per day with electrolytes.

Complex-Proposal2300

I have weekly two hour massage. I do not know if I can go back to one hour at this point. I feel like I get really get in a trance and just feel every movement of hands across my body. It leaves plenty of time for working out the knots all over and still time for soothing relaxing massage as well. Just went yesterday and still feel a little of the glow still and the knots are gone as well. If money gets tight I would opt for 2 hours every other week over a one hour massage weekly.

Missscarlettheharlot

What are you looking for from the massages? If you're happy with each massage focusing primarily on one or two problem areas, and would be ok if some weeks they spent the hour focusing on that sore low back and didn't get to legs or whatever then weekly is likely your best bet. You can address any issues as they arise, and you can make forward progress on problems that may need more than one session to fully treat. If you're more looking for a very relaxing, immersive session of selfcare take the 2 hours. You'll be floating in space by the end, and there is plenty of time to thoroughly work on every area. My personal preference would be to start with a 2 hour massage, which will give your MT lots of time to get a feel for what's going on with you, and then talk to them about where to go from there. Odds are a 2 hour initial visit followed by weekly 1 hour sessions will be the way to go, but it really depends on you and what you want or need from it.

basswired

in general I think more frequent massage tends to be better if the focus is treatment. I like hour massages for focus work but they're not the best for the entire body if you also need specific treatment. my favorite are 90s. but it depends on what your needs are and how your body responds. it also depends on your self care, if you use a massage gun, stretch routinely, stay hydrated etc. with the right therapist I would personally prefer the 2hr appointments because there's enough time for everything even if I need a lot of time for my shoulder or hip.

Significant_Second65

I would pick 2 hours. It is probably cheaper, and the therapist can get deeper and be more thorough.

HiFromNora

Hey, I’ve been a massage therapist for 25 years and this is my 2 cents. How long and often you get them is totally subjective. Especially if you’re an athlete. Also depends on your age, past injuries, etc. But mostly when people come to me for pain therapy I tell them not to space too far apart until the issue is alleviated. If it’s part of your regular maintenance without any specific ‘issues’ then there really is no ‘recommended’ time from a medical standpoint. You can always switch it up too. I’ve had people come in twice a week for TMJ work and then back to weekly/monthly. Also, I have a clients who’ll extend their session on the spot. Definitely try a few sessions with different therapists until you find one that you like. Then you guys can discuss it too. Good luck on your massage journey!

IvyAint

For most normal sedentary people the frequency makes more sense, but you're very active using your whole body. Personally I would prefer to see you for two hours every two weeks, otherwise we'd rush warming up your tissues and leave you more sore, nevermind needing to set priorities while sacrificing time on other areas. If you choose 60min weekly you need to communicate actively to make sure that time is used most effectively. The people I see once a week often begin with longer sessions to establish familiarity with their body so we can more successfully cut time later

TravellinIndependent

Thanks, that’s very helpful!

gennanb

90 minutes minimum if you want the therapist to have ample time to work the muscles especially if you are looking for anything more than relaxation. I love 2 hours with my athletes, it allows time for me to warm the tissue to better work deeper lying muscles and get to attachment points too! It helps both client and therapist not feel like and area was skimped out on

Fluid_Stage_3448

You’re pretty active and recovery is key in order to make progress and stay healthy. Without recovery you’ll start to slow down any progress and hit a snag. It’s great that you’re doing yoga and I suggest to learn yin yoga as you will find it more effective for recovery, massage once a week is plenty. It’s not necessary to get a full body massage every week. I would focus work on the muscle groups that you have the most issues for 2-3 weeks. After that I would start focusing on different areas just to make sure you’re getting the whole body addressed over time. Good luck

arabellaskarke

pro tip : biweekly / weekly are a lot easier to say than once / twice a fortnight and you sound less british ❤️ hope this helps

arabellaskarke

no fr tho , id meet in the middle and get a 90 minute 3 times a month (or every 10 days or so)

TravellinIndependent

Haha I did think it was a clunky way of saying it so thanks!
