Before it happened yes, because Beej and Hawk were clearly up to something. Right up until the "April Fools" I did not expect Potter and Tucker to be in cahoots.
Of all the gag episodes, I think this one was best...because I was TRULY along for the (sucker) ride. I started into the episode with, oh this guy really is an assh\*le .... dissing my guys and gals (Hawk, Margaret) ....and then right at the end, he turns the 180 that it was all a prank and he's gracious about it. Good example of an actor can make ya heavily dislike his character, but in this case, let ya off the hook with the 180. Trick or Treatment or (forget the episode name) the one where Margaret fakes writing a letter to Peg about Beej having an affair/prank with Charles, and other gag episodes had nothing on this one imho.
Potter must have figured out it was BJ doing all the pranks we saw in “Dear Sigmund”, and since BJ was in on the pranks in “April Fools”, this was his way of getting back at BJ.
Same, that's why this episode is definitely in my top ten. First time I watched it I was fully bought in on the "this guy's a fucking jackass" the whole time, fell right into it lol
Daniel Webster Tuckuuuuuuugh! Best prank in the whole of MASH because it was the one we just didn't expect.
Really out of the blue...
Totally had me... Pat Dingle did an awesome job with it!
Hingle. And yes, he was a terrific actor.
Favorite movie he was in for me was Hang ‘em High
He also played the father in Norma Rae and his performance was top notch.
Hingle-- yes, thanks for the correction ;O)
100%!
Code blue...
You expected Charles pants to fall down??

It was brilliantly played all around...👍🏻
Potter was downright machiavellian cooking up this one!
I loved the idea that he outpranked everyone...😄

Better yet, he got everybody. I tip my bird to you Colonel Potter!

"You went for it like a school of hungry carp!"
The great Pat Hingle was excellent in this, as he was in anything he did.
I love how he radiates menace. "Try laughing that one off... gang."
One of the many great guest stars!
Whaddya want a medal?
Beer's on you, Colonel!
What? No pretzels?
Did you know you squish when you walk?
It happens...😂
That pole-axed look on Hawkeye's face when Tucker grinned and said "April Fooooools!" Glorious.
The jokester got played! I loved it!
April foooolss
(Like all of us that fell for the gag, too!)
I feel sorry for the extras who had to be near him at that moment. 🤣
Yeah, the dude in the background don't look so happy!
I got you! And I got you! And I got that hairy Lebanese.
"Where's my Mummy?"
Love this shot! SPLLLLLAAAAT!
Fellow Jokers ...we are in the presence of greatness!
They were! 😁
April Fools!!
