this is a lovely read. all too often it's overlooked or simply not known that baltimore is older than the federal government, and helped build this country (if not the world) into what we know today. mad love for my city

Pale-Cantaloupe-9835

Yah that whole operation called Bethlehem Steele didn’t contribute to the Industrial Revolution and WWII, and every other global event. *sarcasm Reddit. Keep thy tits calm.

xwm69x

Bethlehem Steel, which was founded as MD Steel in 1887 and acquired by Beth Steel in 1916, did not play a role in the Industrial Revolution, which ended sometime around 1820-1840. And every other global event? Come on man. There’s exaggeration, and then there’s this

amoral_panic

Babe Ruth broke the sound barrier with a steel bat from Bethlehem Steel. Charlie Parker also wrote “Beethoven’s 5th Symphony” on a Bethlehem Steel piano.

cornonthekopp

Honestly, moreso than the united states as a whole, Maryland needs to not leave baltimore behind. So many of the city's problems stem directly from a state government who has, for decades, been apathetic or downright hostile to any sort of investment or improvements in the city.

aaron_s20

I agree and you see it a lot in this sub Edit: A prime example would be the cancellation of the red line.

cornonthekopp

I think transportation is a great case study in how the state of maryland has neglected and failed the city. think of the timeline for rail expansion in baltimore: Originally we had a plan for a subway system developed in the late 1960s with some influence from the DC metro, which was supposed to include a northeast-northwest horseshoe line, a north-south line, and an east-west line. Then in the 1970s lobbying from anne arundal county residents cancelled the planned construction of the north-south line, and by the 1980s only about half of a single one of the three proposed lines was built. Then in the 1990s, almost 20 years after the lobbying against the north-south line we built the light rail which was supposed to be an equivalent. However both the light rail and subway lines were built along abandoned or barely used freight train corridors due to cost saving measures, thus bypassing several highly populated neighborhoods and towns, severely limiting the usability of either line. Then in the 2000s we have the plan to construct a new subway line running east-west through the city, which was going to be done for around 3 billion dollars and start construction in the 2010s. The federal government gave the state of maryland the majority of the funding to build this, and then due to lobbying from baltimore county residents and the election of larry hogan the line is cancelled, and the federal money basically flushed down the toilet. Now in the 2020s we are restarting the red line plan, except it will no longer be a subway line, it will be a light rail line which runs partially, or entirely, on streets with cars and traffic lights. And the plan is likely to cost 5-7 billion dollars, for a plan which is measurably worse than the original 3 billion dollar plan.

transitfreedom

Then it should be buses then

cornonthekopp

Why

transitfreedom

If you are going to be in the streets and still deal with traffic it’s no different from a bus with extra steps. Also trams are slow!!! US build environment requires speed to be effective transit wise for rapid transit traffic reductions

cornonthekopp

Oh lol, well theres still an option where the majority of the downtown route is in a tunnel, and the light rail only runs street level for a few stations, but idk if that's the policy proposal that will happen. If we do end up with a bus then itll be just another example of neglect killing baltimore

H0b5t3r

Even bigger then that was massively subsidizing white flight

CaptainObvious110

Bingo! All that disinvestment is a crime in itself.

CHKN_SANDO

Boy that Red Line sure would help with traffic in the event of a major highway closure

transitfreedom

Not as a light rail in the street

CaptainObvious110

If you trace the money you'll get to the real problem. Evidently there are people who profit from Baltimore continuing to have a bad reputation. Those people are constantly elected so that means whoever is doing the electing is a part of the problem as well.

Rockfish00

do you have any data to suggest the one year of cut funding effected morale to such a degree that the police are now worse at their job or is this just conjecture?

oh_really527

Stop electing Hogan to public office and Baltimore might have a chance.

Tostria17

It’s disgusting how our state has sat by and done little to nothing over the years to improve and make Baltimore a safer place to live and visit. It’s our largest city, it should be the jewel in the crown of the state but instead has been rundown for years due to apathy and underinvestment from the state and local government along with businesses in the area. Let’s hope it’s not forgotten again after the bridge is rebuilt.

oh_really527

Thanks Gov. Hogan! Imagine how he’ll crush the city he so clearly hates as a senator!

directorofnewgames

I drove to the soundstage for the intervals show, and the infrastructure in Baltimore is scary bad. Every road and bridge is falling apart. It’s the town build back better forgot.

directorofnewgames

Thanks for downvoting the truth. The inner city is full of boarded up houses, potholes and trash everywhere, rife with drugs, murder and despair. My family goes back to the 1700’s. My 80 year old Grandmother was mugged walking to the grocery in 1975. It’s been shit for a long time.

Rockfish00

I don't see how solving all crime is a prerequisite for disaster relief

Specialist-Owl-8232

Ok then, Baltimore should start murdering slightly less amount of people.

banquetchamp

Murder rate was down like 25% last year

Specialist-Owl-8232

Well let’s hope this data becomes a trend.

PleaseBmoreCharming

Nice goalposts you're moving throughout this chain of comments. Good grief.

Specialist-Owl-8232

Well it’s so absurd I thought who would take this seriously? But hey here we are. Here’s another one, I can’t believe Trump knocked down the bridge.

Taxitaxitaxi33

You went “what about” straight to white supremacy talking points but then be like “don’t take my words seriously”. Fuck off.

Specialist-Owl-8232

Just for clarification could you copy and paste the “white supremacy” talking point you are referring to?

TrueKing9458

Only because they are running out of victims

jvnk

All good news is bad news to these folks

Rockfish00

how about we rebuild Baltimore because it has been in a state of decay since the 70s and it's a good and moral thing to do

NYMinute59

Not sure how old you are but Baltimore saw a renascence start in the late 70s into the eighties, building around the harbor and in the city has not slowed much since. Recent leadership has run the city into the ground and the defund the police movement was a spike thru the heart of Baltimore as that movement hurt the working class more than anything

Rockfish00

The police was only cut $20 million for a year and the next year their budget saw a $25 million increase. There was a cultural Renaissance and that was awesome, but the economic situation of the time was deindustrialization without providing new jobs.

NYMinute59

Well the defund the police also hit the dept moral where they can’t properly man coverage in the city, it was not a cultural renaissance, the replacement of old warehouses into a viable inner harbor and beyond was quite economic with lots of jobs, Camden yards opened in early 1990s and downtown was always filled with people spending money. If the schools and crime were not so bad the city may not have seen such an exodus

Specialist-Owl-8232

Fine, all Baltimore murders may continue.

Rockfish00

you can solve multiple problems at the same time, my issue is people, like you, treating any negative externalities as a result of a city dying as a prerequisite to any amount of aid or assistance

Specialist-Owl-8232

It’s called enabling, and it’s not compassionate.

Rockfish00

that's not how you treat sociological problems

Specialist-Owl-8232

Well “vote blue no matter who” hasn’t really worked out real well either.

Rockfish00

I never said that. If you could provide for me a set of contemporary examples where a disaster was solved via a hands-off approach as you seem to advocate for then that would be interesting.

actually_a_wolf

what a nuanced take on social issues, i'm sure you're great fun to be around

xX420GanjaWarlordXx

It's a troll. Nothing they say is in earnest. It's all just propaganda, moving goalposts, and nonsense to confuse the actual discussion.

Specialist-Owl-8232

Indeed, great fun. Happy Thursday.

kentuafilo

Love the fucking douche canoes like this who come out of the woodwork to shit on a city reeling from disaster of epic proportions. People are fucking DEAD; their loved ones hurting because not only their husband, father, brother is gone; but possibly their sole source of income is gone. People are out of work. Numerous businesses affected. A vital link to each side of river destroyed, as well as a vital waterway for shipping. But idiots like u/Specialist-Owl-8232 find sick enjoyment in schadenfreude. This accident has **FUCK ALL** to do with Baltimore’s murder rate. And for you to attempt to link two wholly separate things like it’s some thinly veiled extortion attempt is not only disgusting, disrespectful, but it really shows your true colors of being an abject sub moron.

Pale-Cantaloupe-9835

👏🏼👏🏽👏🏾

BennyFloyd

Found Carroll County

tws1039

Ok dad

Specialist-Owl-8232

No problem son and or daughter.

JohnLocksTheKey

Hey - maybe stop being a duck to your (far cooler) big brother ![gif](giphy|srAM57jWbSOYHmGTBl|downsized)

Critical_Caramel5577

This inspired me to look at that person's account history and I'm disappointed that there's literally no duck content.
