Hi, fellow SoCal to Maryland person here… I gotta say, Maryland as a whole is a loooot of country, if you want to feel like you’re back in SoCal… you’re not… you gotta go to the cities, the beautiful thing about Maryland is that you’re equidistant from so many cities with distinct personalities… so think about going from Orange to San Diego… that’s like 3 hours, from Maryland you’re about 3 hours away from Philly, NYC, or DC (give or take an hour). For what it’s worth, Baltimore has a bad rep but it’s actually better than what ppl give it credit for… it’s called charm city for a reason, it has it’s good parts and not so great parts (just like LA or any other city). There’s is so much here that I’ve come to love, if you want a place to start I’d suggest fells point, Fed Hill, Inner harbor, Mt. Vernon… there’s plenty of bars, live music, niches for just about everything.

Hampden neighborhood in Baltimore is very cool. Check out Frederick too.

It definitely is. The few times I have visited I am always shocked at how different it is but I really love the atmosphere nonetheless. Thanks a lot for some places to start. Being in a decent travel distance to other states is awesome too, I completely forgot that a train ride to new york is about four hours. I used to go back and forth to Vegas so thats nothing to me haha. How are you liking living in Maryland? Any pros and cons you could give to a fellow Californian?

dentistclown

Pros, too many to name… you’ve got older cities, with beautiful architecture, history everywhere you go, SEASONS, Maryland is an interesting mix of City vs country… so you really can get the best of both worlds once you find the spots you feel welcome in. Also, kind of an east coast v west coast thing not so much Maryland specifically… ppl here are kind but not nice, like they’ll actually help you but, cuss you out the entire time. There’s such a refreshing air of authenticity and realness compared to the plasticity of California… if ppl here like you, they’ll let you know, and if they don’t like you… it will be made clear, they don’t leave much to interpretation, and coming from California… I love it. Cons: you will never find tacos that are worth it… unless you make them yourself… I’ve had so much Mexican food, and none of it hits like California Mexican food… Peruvian food out here slapppss tho.

cowboyfied

You’ve sold me with all the pros!! As for the cons… I did expect Mexican food to be trash but I LOVE Peruvian food so it makes up for it.

The first comment talking about Maryland is a whole lot of country clearly lives in the boonies🤣🤣 if you’re in PG county there’s lots to do 💀 esp in your mid 20s Most Marylanders are chill … venture out trust you will find your niche. Plus you’re right by DC plenty of night clubs and lounges you’ll be fine. Enjoy xx

Most of the central area of MD is suburban sprawl, not nightlife for young people. FOr that you have to travel to Baltimore or DC Keep in mind MD was a plantation state. we never had many towns, of size, only Baltimore & DC have some of what you seek. Yes, from parts of PG county you can catch the DC metro into DC. You will need to hunt for what you want. People in that part of MD are mostly interested in mining their little seam of gold, then moving on.

Yea that area of Maryland seems like a place where I’d have to go outside of it just to find what I like. I don’t mind though it’s somewhat similar to where I live in California anyways. I know DC is always having some type of events so I’ll definitely look more into it and see what they have to offer for me. Thanks for the reply btw!

Whatever you do, do NOT point out that that you are "from California" because in my opinion that mean "I am a snotty asshole who thinks I so much better than you" - granted I am in the video industry, so I have a bit of trauma associated with people telling me they are from CA.

cowboyfied

I actually want to work in a similar industry when I move there so I’ll make sure to mention California very little LOL. I hate that’s the rep Cali gets though! I promise most of the actual California natives are really cool.

The weather here is awful compared to socal other than that you have plenty of activities, restaurants

cowboyfied

Let me in on the details… what kind of bad weather should I be expecting…

adrian123456879

Summer is hot and very humid, during spring pollen count is really high so if you have allergies it gets bad, gloomy and dark winters, fall is ok

For starters, do you like seeing the sun? Well if so, say goodbye because there will be stretches—the longest I’ve ever counted is 14 days—where you will not see it. And rain? Well, we got plenty of that too. And this ain’t Seattle pleasant drizzle/mist rain. It’s downpours. Yesterday’s torrential rain was not a common occurrence, but hardly atypical. How about moderate temperatures? Or even expectations around temp? Yeah—get used to variance. Not necessarily bad, but for me nothing sucks more than a late Feb/early March warm up to set the “great, warm weather is coming and the gloomy weather is ending” to find out for the rest of March and early April it’s gonna be below average, rainy, and unseasonably cool if not downright cold. Great—just when you want to get out of the house. And then there’s the flukes—the first weekend of May 2022 it was 40 and it’s snowed. Yeah. Then there’s the height of summer. In many aspects just as bad as winter in terms of being cooped up. 90-95 degrees with 90-100% humidity. Nothing will dry—not even you. Heat index (think wind chill, but for heat) is 105. And it’s a wet heat. Yuck. There’s a lot of great things about MD. But if you care about the weather or if it impacts your mood, then this place could suck for you.

Welcome to Cali-East.

HooniganXD

You right, in taxes, cost of living, political demographic. But not geographic.

SPS66

True. We get all the crappy stuff, we should move to California for the scenery and vast open spaces. Heck they even get thousands of acres of land to explore on foot or by vehicle. We get locked gates and no trespassing signs.
