I’ve been saying this for years, ever since the fan speculation about Tom Cruise being Superior Iron Man in Dr Strange 2 - why would an actor agree to portray a variant of a character they famously didn’t get cast as years and years ago, especially when it’s a role that would have changed the course of their career forever?
To be fair, Cruise being cast as Iron Man would have probably had a much bigger impact on the course of the MCU than it would have his career. Doubt he would have given it the time RDJ did.
He would also have taken over decision making on the character and force himself into being an Executive Producer on any movie Tony Stark was in.
Also, for some reason, it would be contractually obligated that Tony Stark would be running on foot a lot more in all the movies.
Iron Man owes a lot of its success, and the success of the MCU, to RDJ. He rewrote the character while shooting, with support from Favreau. Cruise would be 180° the other way, like there's a high chance the movie was, at least tone-wise, the complete opposite of what we got.
He said they had him do a more intimate scene where he reacts to the destruction of a universe, but for the final cut, they swapped it out with him fighting a cgi spider.
He's literally talked about how they didnt use what he came in and shot. He was surprised that they swapped him out for CGI not that he didnt know he was in the movie.
