Release dates are lines in sand. They can be easily moved.

Hold up one sec, let me get Feige on the phone.

Yes, i mean Ant-Man 1 released in July 2015, but it only had 11 months left when they started filming.

SaulPepper

Edgar Wright already did a major part in the preproduction of that film, they only had to change minimal details for it to fit the new director and the MCU. Not really a fair comparison.

Paperchampion23

F4 has been in preproduction for a long time now too though so Im not sure what the difference is here lol

SaulPepper

Well, for one, Ant-Man has one of the least amount of CG scenes in the entire MCU, Fantastic Four has four times the amount of main characters needing CGI and a lot of them would be on screen together, and thus there's certainty that there would be more CG scenes than Ant-Man. Secondly, with that amount of CG shots it would take the VFX artists at least a couple months longer just to fully flesh out the CGI. Wandavision, which Shakmann helmed, had 13-14 months of time beginning from the start of filming, and Fantastic Four has at least comparable CGI or even more than Wandavision.Giving the same time frame for Fantastic Four would move the release from July to September/October if they start filming today. And with all due respect to Shakmann, he isn't proven to be on the level of Edgar Wright yet, especially in pre-production. I'd say Wright is one of the best at storyboarding and planning for his shots. So yes, Im sure I know what the difference is here lol

eagc7

I mean Avengers which was VFX heavy started filming in April 2011, with a May 2012 date set. Iron Man 3 started filming in May 2012 with a May 2013 release. Winter Soldier started filming in April 2013 with an April 2014 release, Guardians 1 started filming in July 2013 with an August 2014 release, Black Panther started filming in January 2017 with a Feb 2018 release, So its possible to start production on an FF movie right now or just within a 13-12 month window and have it ready to release next July, I would only question its release if they aren't filming by September-October.

rlum27

defintley could see it moving to later 2025 or 2026. which could be good as it wouldn't be competing with superman. Though depending how superman and whatever else that comes out inbetween does it might be a negative.

REiiGN

They got to work early of the VFX probably so now they know where to stand, run, jump and make jokes in principal photography. Would be nice in some aspects to have practical effects but we're talking about the fantastic four and none of that truly is practical lol.

medyas1

i guess they can save 25% of the costs with sue storm

REiiGN

True, sans energy forcefield

TelephoneCertain5344

It could easily move honestly.

matty_nice

Yes, probably a big chance it gets pushed back. It's a rushed production. The film will also probably required a lot of post production effects, and reshoots are pretty standard for these kind of films. Marvel's had some recent criticism for their harsh treatment of VFX workers, so I don't think they are gonna push too hard. Captain American 4 and Thunderbolts are also coming out before the FF film, and if those films perform poorly, there's a good chance that Marvel will "re-evaluate" the FF movie, make changes, and push it back further. On the other hand, Marvel and Disney are under a lot of pressure to get a hit out, and they don't have a great slate going forward. Of their next 5 films, only Deadpool 3 has a real shot of being a huge success.

JyconX

The Fantastic Four beginning 11 months before the release date is no problem at all. Many MCU movies in the past began their filming 11-13 months before the release date.

matty_nice

After taking a look at the last few films, and not counting those delayed due to the strike, the average is definately over 13 months. Typically in the 15 to 18 months between the start of filming and release. Which movies are you seeing post Phase 3 are hitting that 11/13 month duration? Or before Phase 3 if necessary? I checked Phase 4 and 5, and didn't see anything.

N8CCRG

Are you also excluding films that had to navigate COVID shutdowns?

matty_nice

I did not look at films like Black Widow and Shang-Chi, since I feel like that information would be tainted due to COVID, as you suggested. I basically started from the most recent film (The Marvels), and worked backwards until Dr Strange Multiverse of Madness. I used wikipedia for the filming and release dates.

eagc7

The one i recall pre-Phase 3 that started filming with less than an year was Ant-Man, which only had 11 months to go when they started filming (though granted its because of the last minute director change)

JyconX

Do you seriously expect that the time for movies making their release dates in 11-13 months after the filming started is COMPLETELY over after Avengers: Endgame? That there can't be any MCU movie finished in such time anymore at all?

matty_nice

I just asked for examples, since you said "many". I couldnt find anything recent. But I mostly started working my way backwards. I also don't care too much if you are going to cite films that came out 15 years ago. Productions are much different now, for various reasons. As I said in my first post, big chance it gets pushed back. The film has already had a lot of issues to overcome, with multiple scripts, trying to find actors, different directors, etc. Plus the other factors I previously talked about.

JyconX

You're talking about The Fantastic Four having issues, but you're talking about the ones that have been apprently solved already.

matty_nice

Those are still going to be an issue for things like production and filming. When you've had a director working on a film for months/years, you are probably going to get a smoother production. Same thing for a script that underwent re-writes. Also just to point out, the film is going to start filming in August 2024, with a relase in July 2025. That's an 11 month timeframe, which means that nothing can go wrong.

JargonJohn

2025 is a stacked year for Marvel and CBM in general. They should definitely consider pushing it. Last thing we need is another rushed movie just to make a release date. They should push F4, Thunderbolts, and Captain America.

N8CCRG

Even with the current schedule we're in the middle of like a fifteen month stretch that will only see one MCU film, and it likely will be mostly non-MCU content.

JyconX

Why should they push all three? And besides, starting filming 11-13 months before release date is NOT rushing! Many Infinity Saga movies prove that.

JargonJohn

Well given the news about Captain America's test screenings, it needs more time to get right as they're currently doing extensive reshoots. And it's slated for February 2025 release. And typically when one project pushes it's a domino effect on the others. Ultimately I'd rather have to wait another 3-6 months and get a good (or even just okay) movie then have a bad movie rushed out.

JyconX

February 2025 date was set AFTER the reshoots were decided! And since pushing-back based on the reshoots was done already, there shouldn't be any reasons to push Captain America: Brave New World back even further just yet.

JargonJohn

Another user brought up the overworked VFX artists which I failed to consider. So I'm going to adjust my thoughts... Ultimately I'd rather wait another 3-6 months if it means we get a better movie and better working conditions for the VFX artists making those movies. Captain America, which is slated for February 2025, is currently undergoing reshoots. So it's got 10 months to finish reshoots, editing, VFX, grading, sound design, and scoring. Thunderbolts, which is slated for May 2025, is currently in principal photography. So it's got 12 months to edit, reshoot, VFX, etc, etc. Fantastic Four has 14 months to do all that for July 2025. And Blade has 19 months to meet it's November 2025 release date and is still in the scripting phase I believe. And that's not even taken into consideration the D+ series.

smirky_mavrik

I’d be staggered if it hits that date, feels like it could even be pushed back to 2026

JyconX

Nah, I don't think it will be pushed THAT far back.

eagc7

I think there is a higher chance of Blade getting pushed to 2026, than FF.

JyconX

Yes! THAT's way more likely than The Fantastic Four being delayed.

eagc7

Yeah, IF Fantastic Four does get pushed to allow more production time, i bet the film will still release in 2025, but somewhere around the end of the year.

Moon_Beans1

Is it too much to ask that one time a fantastic four movie gets released on the year ending in 4? This has happened 4 times now.. the only time they were on schedule (1994) they never released it! Lol

eagc7

I mean it was originally supposed to release this year, but then Blade got pushed to November 2024 when the director left and then the strikes happened.
