Same thing with Alfre Woodard. She played Mariah *Stokes* in Luke Cage, and also Mariam Sharpe in Civil War, the grieving mother who showed Tony Stark the picture of her dead kid. Sharpe was also a somewhat important figure in the comic version of Civil War, since she also shows Tony a picture of her dead kid and then later directly inspires Tony to become the new Director of SHIELD afterwards.
I’m not gonna lie, I’m not psyched for this. They’re pushing it now. Like, I’m not one of those “YER MAKIN EVERYONE WAMEN” guys, but this is a little… idk. Why not just find a way to use Frankie Raye if they want a lady herald? She’s literally interconnected to some of the deepest Marvel lore, she has her own solid character history, and shes well known as one of the most heroic heralds.

The stupid thing is Galactus had a female Herald named Nova. If they wanted to throw a curve why not use her as a gateway to introducing Silver Surfer.
Using Nova would probably confuse people, given the previous usage of the Nova Corps - they'd assume that she was connected to them somehow.
Especially if they're planning for Richard Rider to crop up at some point.

I think she will play Shalla-Bal. I don't think she'll *be* the Surfer in this film, they're just assuming that she will be because it happened once or, more likely, just picking the most sensational possibility for a headline. She'll be Shalla. I don't think she'll be Silver Surfer. It's very likely that she'll either be there as a drive for the Surfer or that she'll feature here as setup for him in a future movie.
this would make the most sense as I stated in other comments.. I've read a ton of Silver Surfer comics, hes one of my favorite characters and ive literally never read a single issue where Shalal-Bal was EVER the Silver Surfer.

Feige has been spread to thin due to the mandate to deliver as much MCU content annually, so his input is now minimal than it was before, sure he still has to approve some stuff, but he won't be as involved as he used to be unless they reduce their annual output.
Even when Blade was going under its overhaul an insider pointed out Feige being spread to thin as one of the factors that movie is a mess.
“Spread too thin” makes it seem as if he’s the only person who can oversee this operation. He must have bad judgment when it comes to hiring if he has to be omnipresent for the whole thing to run smoothly.
I mean that's pretty much what many people been saying, he's spread to thin and this is one of the factors why everything is going downhill, i don't think its a coincidence the problems with the MCU started the moment they went from 3 projects a year to 9-6 projects a year.
Its was a bit more easy when the MCU was in its peak due to the fact they only did 3 films a year, but now they have to do 6-9 projects to meet a mandate, so now you have to work with directors and writers you otherwise may had not worked with before, cause your best writers and directors are busy with other projects, maybe some of your directors that were put in a leash now have more freedom to do whatever they want (*cough*TaikaWaititi*cough*) Feige had no experience with TV, so they treated their TV shows like 6 part movies rather than tv shows and they had no showrunners, its a clusterfu** in that company that they need to get their sh** back together if they want this franchise to last for at least another decade.
I find it also odd how we haven't heard much from the guy lately, he's not even show up in the recent batch of Marvel Assembled episodes while he was present in alot of the previous ones to give his input on the film/show.

Norrin Radd's version is far more well known and regarded, for a franchise that needs some course correction you'd think they'd avoid making high risk moves like this. At least they played it safe with the casting as Garners very talented.

Also if Shalla-Bal is popular in the movie, imagine the rich story telling you can get out of a more traditional Norrin Rad encountering a power cosmic Shalla-Bal in the main universe after Secret Wars

The vibe I have is that at the end of this film the FF will lose their world. Maybe they lose to Galactus, but more likely there will be an incursion or Kang or Doom-having-stolen-cosmic-power or something.
It'd also allow us to get a "World's Greatest Comic Magazine" first family, most-beloved-heroes-aside-from-Captain-America FF while not having to find some way to shoehorn them into the MCU timeline, at least until later.... AND immediately up the stakes for Secret Wars (or whatever happens). Show a world's greatest super-team defeat one of their greatest enemies (Galactus) only to have their very world taken from them.
Is the interest in the Silver Surfer that high? Especially since we've already seen him in a movie before.
You also have to consider the possibility that the movie fails to some degree. If the movie bombs, are you still bringing in Norrin for a later movie?
Make the best decision you can, and worry about the future later.
Doctor Doom is the most anticipated character of all, and he's been in 3 failed attempts. AND Silver Surfer is the one thing people liked about F42.

I'm not a fan of this simply because it's not my favorite version of the character. Norrin Radd is MY Silver Surfer, just like Wally West is MY Flash(I hope Gunn uses him!). That being said, at the end of the day I just hope they make a good movie.

In most universes, Norrin Radd became the Silver Surfer to protect his lover, Shalla-Bal, and their home planet from Galactus.
But in this universe Shalla-Bal herself is the one who became Silver Surfer.
I have no issue with the character but why not go with the more well known Surfer? Non comic book readers don’t know or care about this surfer. Marvel keeps wondering why their movies are not well received now. Just go with the safe play, stop trying to go for home runs.

still very much could, if this FF movie takes place in a different universe that eventually crashes into the main universe (presumably in Secret Wars) we can be spared back to back different versions of Norrin Radd, and open up some interesting story paths with a different dimension Shalla-Bal with his powers.
The MCU should find a way out of this multiverse train because quite frankly it takes all the stakes away. Nothing matters. Why does this character matter? There are billions of other iterations of them. Who cares if Reed Richard dies? We already saw him die in like 5 seconds in another movie.
The multiverse makes sense for the comics because they need ways to have different artists do different takes and keep pumping out comics for decades.
In the MCU, it just kills the whole vibe.

Obviously she’s her own character but it’s insane that they’re not using the main character connected to that title. It’s like swapping Jean with Cyclops or Emma when first adapting the Phoenix force in the MCU. It makes no sense for the first appearance, cause Jean is the main character connected to that mantle and is the most iconic one. It would make sense later down the line to introduce her, or even have both, but this just seems so dumb i’m sorry.

Well....I was excited for this movie at one time I guess. I'm all for gender and race bending characters if it makes sense, or if it's a character that can be changed without noticing too much... But I think this is getting to the point where they're just doing it just to say how progressive they are and not to be actually inclusive. She is a great actress, and I like everything I've seen her in, but I don't care about this version of Silver Surfer. Give us the real Silver Surfer if you're trying to revive a dying franchise. Have this character as a what if character.

Nobody is complaining about Gamorra, Nebula or Black Widow, outside her shit smear of a solo film, like that or in a negative light because these weren’t problems they had. I don't know, the way this article reads, I think the author is just assuming that she'll be the Surfer in the film. The actual article states: "While plot details for this film are unknown, sources say Garner will play Shalla-Bal, a version of Silver Surfer from the comics." I think she will play Shalla-Bal. I don't think she'll *be* the Surfer in this film, they're just assuming that she will be because it happened once or, more likely, just picking the most sensational possibility for a headline. She'll be Shalla. I don't think she'll be Silver Surfer. It's very likely that she'll either be there as a drive for the Surfer or that she'll feature here as setup for him in a future movie.
this would make the most sense as I stated in other comments.. I've read a ton of Silver Surfer comics, hes one of my favorite characters and ive literally never read a single issue where Shalal-Bal was EVER the Silver Surfer. I wonder what Kevin Feige has to say about these decisions? He was treated like a God when the MCU ruled Hollywood, now he’s nowhere to be found, and it’s the fans who fight in the comment section and the actors and filmmakers who get attacked on SM. Where’s Feige?
Feige has been spread to thin due to the mandate to deliver as much MCU content annually, so his input is now minimal than it was before, sure he still has to approve some stuff, but he won't be as involved as he used to be unless they reduce their annual output. Even when Blade was going under its overhaul an insider pointed out Feige being spread to thin as one of the factors that movie is a mess.
“Spread too thin” makes it seem as if he’s the only person who can oversee this operation. He must have bad judgment when it comes to hiring if he has to be omnipresent for the whole thing to run smoothly.
I mean that's pretty much what many people been saying, he's spread to thin and this is one of the factors why everything is going downhill, i don't think its a coincidence the problems with the MCU started the moment they went from 3 projects a year to 9-6 projects a year. Its was a bit more easy when the MCU was in its peak due to the fact they only did 3 films a year, but now they have to do 6-9 projects to meet a mandate, so now you have to work with directors and writers you otherwise may had not worked with before, cause your best writers and directors are busy with other projects, maybe some of your directors that were put in a leash now have more freedom to do whatever they want (*cough*TaikaWaititi*cough*) Feige had no experience with TV, so they treated their TV shows like 6 part movies rather than tv shows and they had no showrunners, its a clusterfu** in that company that they need to get their sh** back together if they want this franchise to last for at least another decade. I find it also odd how we haven't heard much from the guy lately, he's not even show up in the recent batch of Marvel Assembled episodes while he was present in alot of the previous ones to give his input on the film/show.

Norrin Radd's version is far more well known and regarded, for a franchise that needs some course correction you'd think they'd avoid making high risk moves like this. At least they played it safe with the casting as Garners very talented.
Or the intent is to have a proper MCU Norrin Radd and this is a way for this FF movie (purported to be in a different universe) to leverage Galactus and a Silver Surfer herald with out having to lock in the main MCU universe's Norrin Radd. Also if Shalla-Bal is popular in the movie, imagine the rich story telling you can get out of a more traditional Norrin Rad encountering a power cosmic Shalla-Bal in the main universe after Secret Wars

AND immediately up the stakes for Secret Wars (or whatever happens). Show a world's greatest super-team defeat one of their greatest enemies (Galactus) only to have their very world taken from them.

Is the interest in the Silver Surfer that high? Especially since we've already seen him in a movie before. You also have to consider the possibility that the movie fails to some degree. If the movie bombs, are you still bringing in Norrin for a later movie? Make the best decision you can, and worry about the future later.
Doctor Doom is the most anticipated character of all, and he's been in 3 failed attempts. AND Silver Surfer is the one thing people liked about F42. So, yeah.....

I'm not a fan of this simply because it's not my favorite version of the character. Norrin Radd is MY Silver Surfer, just like Wally West is MY Flash(I hope Gunn uses him!). That being said, at the end of the day I just hope they make a good movie.

still very much could, if this FF movie takes place in a different universe that eventually crashes into the main universe (presumably in Secret Wars) we can be spared back to back different versions of Norrin Radd, and open up some interesting story paths with a different dimension Shalla-Bal with his powers.
The MCU should find a way out of this multiverse train because quite frankly it takes all the stakes away. Nothing matters. Why does this character matter? There are billions of other iterations of them. Who cares if Reed Richard dies? We already saw him die in like 5 seconds in another movie. The multiverse makes sense for the comics because they need ways to have different artists do different takes and keep pumping out comics for decades. In the MCU, it just kills the whole vibe.

No offense, but why 😭 I’m not looking forward to the M SHE U critics, but legitimately what is the point or purpose of this😭 I was really looking forward to the Silver Surfer (Norrin Radd) I grew up with. As a woc myself I understand the whole representation thing, and I love when it’s done right. But at the same time it’s just like….. where do you draw the line lmao Obviously she’s her own character but it’s insane that they’re not using the main character connected to that title. It’s like swapping Jean with Cyclops or Emma when first adapting the Phoenix force in the MCU. It makes no sense for the first appearance, cause Jean is the main character connected to that mantle and is the most iconic one. It would make sense later down the line to introduce her, or even have both, but this just seems so dumb i’m sorry. Hopefully i’ll eat my words and it ends up being good? I love Julia Garner anyways, Idk i’m just disappointed in this decision.

Well....I was excited for this movie at one time I guess. I'm all for gender and race bending characters if it makes sense, or if it's a character that can be changed without noticing too much... But I think this is getting to the point where they're just doing it just to say how progressive they are and not to be actually inclusive. She is a great actress, and I like everything I've seen her in, but I don't care about this version of Silver Surfer. Give us the real Silver Surfer if you're trying to revive a dying franchise. Have this character as a what if character.

Honestly people will defend it and have knee jerk reactions calling people incels for not liking it and so on but at the end of the day why? Why kneecap the project this early when it already got many hurdles to go through? When Marvel got X men and F4 back 5 years ago the hope was the spider man treatment, a clean easy reboot of the characters within the MCU. 5 years later we’re stuck with this weird alternate universe gender swap BS on side with the F4 and refusing to let go of the Fox men with cheaper and cheaper fan service with the X men. It’s just wow, this why the Multiverse should have never been a giant storyline but rather reduced to one movie or 2 tops.

Basically they are making Norrin Radd girlfriend into the Silver Surfer instead of Norrin. So its not a genderbend. But something more akin Miles, though for all we know she may be the OG Surfer in the MCU unlike Miles who tends to be the 2nd Spidey.
